DiskUtility cannot repair Permission difference: applications/Safari and freezes.
The message I receive is:
"Permissions differ on "Applications/Safari.app/contents/Resources....sources/index-html"
should be: lrwxr-xr-x
They are: -rwxr-xr-x.
This is a brand new computer.
DiskUtility keeps running for hours and then just freezes the PC

Although it’s immensely popular, repairing permissions is a waste of time unless you have a specific indication of a permission error involving system files, which is rare, or a startup failure. It is not a universal rite of healing for computers. It has traditionally spewed bogus warning messages that mean absolutely nothing.
The built-in help for Disk Utility reads in part:
If you see an alert or a message that says your permissions are set incorrectly, you can correct the disk’s permissions by clicking Repair Disk Permissions.
It’s justifiable, though rarely necessary, to repair permissions after running a third-party software installer, as defective installers have been known to damage the permissions of system files.

Repair Permissions differences between Onyx and Disk Utility
If I repair permissions, there are a large number of 'repaired permissions' if I switch between using Onyx (10.6) and Disk Utility. Most of them are in
System / Library / CoreServices
System / Library / Java
System / Library / Frameworks
Why should this be? It makes me think that either Onyx or Disk Utility is doing it wrong. If I had to back which one it is, I'd have to say Onyx is the likeliest suspect. Probably, but some permission results are always and repetitively wrong:
As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:

Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard onwards changed the location of a number of system components. -
Web Gallery-Surprising Differences between Safari and Firefox
I discovered some surprising differences using Web Gallery in Safari vs. Firefox:
1. When you first view an album the gallery, the thumbnail photos take quite a bit longer to be visible in Safari than in Firefox.
2. When rolling the mouse over the Subscribe icon in Safari, a message states, "Add this album to iPhoto." In Firefox, the message states, "Subscribe to an RSS feed of this album."
3. When a movie is selected in Safari, you can download it immediately, though the movie is not playable from the Safari page until it fully loads. In Firefox, if you click the download icon before the movie has fully loaded, a message appears that states, "QuickTime is unable to play this movie. Please try again. Then, a window opens asking what to do with the file you are trying to download -- Save it, or Launch QuickTime. If you wait until the movie is fully loaded, it plays within the Firefox page. If, after it's loaded, you leave the page and then go back to that page, the movie won't load again and play within Firefox, but it can be downloaded.

I use HttpWatch tool to measure the loading times. Reports are mostly the same for IE and FF. I can see from the report, there is three times shown error 404 Not Found for the items below.

The last action which caused 404 error started 2 seconds after the page was asked to refresh. The next action http://......../i/libraries/jquery-ui/1.8.22/ui/i18n/oracle/jquery.ui.datepicker-cs.js started after 38 seconds (hanging in the same place for 36 seconds). Does it mean that the problem is caused by http://......./images/sReportBG-Standard.png action which returns 404 error?
How can I add the missing images?

Hey,
my MacBook pro recently froze on the spinning wheel while I was using the Internet, I had to hold down the power button to shut down
Once I restarted the machine I was left on a grey screen with a flashing folder sign..I read all the articles on this that I could find online and followed the procedures until the only option left was to use disk utility from the install dvd and try to diagnose and repair the problem.
I used disk utility and found it could not repar the disk named. Disk0s2 ..which I have also read is a bad sign to start with...the log said this..

Checking journaled HFS plus volume
Invalid b-tree node size
The volume. Could not be verified completely
Disk utility could not repair this disk..backup files, reformat disk and restore backed up files
I need some advice as to that's what I should do and if there's a way for me to save my files on the mac....and more importantly how to reformat the disk properly..I've tried the YouTube tutorials and couldn't get what I was after.

Application crashes and freezing????
today my iphone keeps crashes when try to do anything on it!!! I have the updated ios 6 update on my phone for a couple of days now!! HELP it's driving me crazy!!

ITunes Quit Unexpectedly (as does Safari and Mail)
I have been having trouble recently with iTunes quitting unexpectedly when opening or shortly after opening. I've tried recreating the library as detailed in the FAQ in this forum, but it crashed again when trying to import the iTunes Library.xml file.
Other applications (Safari and Apple Mail) are both crashing more frequently. I've tried totally reinstalling Safari and iTunes, and then repairing permissions, but still get these crashes. All three programs error logs all contain the line

Message was edited by: craighay1I repaired permissions after reinstalling iTunes and Safari in an attempt to fix the problem. It didn't fix the problem.
I tried rebooting in safe mode, and both applications seemed to be working. Now after booting normally the problem seems to have cleared. So fingers crossed it stays this way.
I didn't think safe mode could actually fix anything. I thought it was only used to diagnose problems or if you couldn't boot normally. Or is this only the case on Windows?
I'm still getting to grips with the steps for fixing problems on my Mac, but that's been almost a year since I switched and this is the first big one I've had the displeasure of coming across. Let's hope it stays that way.

Application Safari not installed
The standard application safari and itunes is not installed.
These default apps cannot be deleted from an iPhone. Either you have Restrictions turned on to hide them or you have inadvertently dropped them into a folder or onto another app to create a folder. Start checking those apps are there somewhere.

Difference between Insert and Insert all
Hi,
I tried to understand what INSERT ALL syntax is doing, but I cannot find any difference between INSERT and INSERT ALL.
I replicated the test scenario using the data from the below mentioned URL:

Please advice if both are same as I have planned to use INSERT statement with a WHEN clause if INSERT ALL is same as INSERT.

The key difference is that INSERT ALL will allow you to insert into multiple different tables in a single statement whereas INSERT will only insert into 1 table. Each of the WHEN clauses allows a different table to be specified.

MacBook looses WIFI and freezes frequently

Since a few days, my MacBookPro Mid 2009 frequently looses the WIFI connection and freezes (not both at the same time).
Both problems started to occur at about the same time, so I think there may be a connection.
The WIFI just looses connection from time to time. The WIFI symbol in the menubar stays on "connected", but when I click on the menubar icon, it doesn't show any networks and isn't connected to anyone, although the icon stays as already mentioned in the "connected" state. Turning off the WIFI from within the menubar changes to the menubar icon to the "off" state. Turning it back on again doesn't work and in the system settings it says that my WIFI is still on. The only way to get it working again is rebooting.
I guess that the freezing occurs less often than the WIFI loss. When my MacBook freezes, it freezes completely. I can't move the mouse anymore and can't change anything with the function keys (e.g. display brightness). The only way to turn it off is holding the power button for a few seconds.
I first tried reseting the DHCP-Lease, SMC and PRAM. I also checked the access rights and my SSD using the Disk Utility. My SSD seemed to be okay and the disconnects and freezes still occurred (The Disk Utility isn't able to repair to repair the file "Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html" but that doesn't seem to be a problem, right?).
I also did the basic Apple Hardware Test, no problems were found.
After restarting my Mac after another freeze, my WIFI hardware wasn't recognized anymore (cross in the menubar icon). I did the basic Hardware Test again and it still didn't find any problems. I also think my Airport Card wasn't recognized in the Mavericks System Report and the Hardware Test, but I'm not a pro, so doubts on that.
I then decide to repair my system installation because the WIFI still worked in the Recovery Partition.
After reinstalling the OS (without deleting all my personal files and apps) the WIFI worked again, but my Mac still froze and lost connection frequently.
A few hours ago I rebooted after a WIFI connection loss and my Mac instantly froze when it finished booting up.
Just about one hour ago this happened again.
I'm out of solutions now and can't find help using google. There aren't any Apple stores near my location and I also can't give away my Mac in the next few weeks. It's currently essential in my daily work and those freezes make working with it very difficult. Just buying a new one isn't a possible solution too.
I'm using 10.9.2 and didn't change anything recently. No system changing apps or anything like that and no hardware changes in the last few months.
I replaced the cd drive with a Samsung SSD a few months ago (I enabled TRIM with "Trim Enabler" by Cindori Software just yesterday) and migrated my data to the SSD. The original hard-drive is still in its place, but almost empty. I also upgraded the RAM to 8GB, but the problems still occurred when I changed it back to the original 4GB. My fan works fine and all the wires are in place. Here's an link to the system logs from a few minutes before the last freeze. I uploaded it to my webspace, because I don't want to fill the whole threat with it, hope thats fine.

I really appreciate your work on the forums.I did have exactly that same wifi behavior and it ended up being the cable that connects the wifi card to the motherboard in my machine. I didn't experience the freezing with that problem though. The wifi disconnects were seemingly random, other than they also occurred when I moved the machine. One thing you might try is to shut the wifi card off altogether and use one of these.

Trying to repair permission and I always get this:
Permissions differ on “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .
I even fresh install the system and every time I do repair the permission I always end up with this even though it said repaired.
I figure this is the problem my laptop, sometime it wont save files or documents and it goes in limbo and had to force shutdown and have to restart on the
booth drive to have it permission repair. I just updated to 10.9.3 and will see if this stop the crashing but repair permission notice is still the same.

I had a safari window open, I went to drag it up on to the destop more but my finger slipped and it dropped into the icon on side bar iWeb that I had been working on. now My iWeb app says "cannot open /application/safari.app" . Ihave already tryed to drag the iWeb to trash and reinstall the applications cd. also, since tryng to figure it out via posts oon apple support that seemed similar ( finding in library and under listing etc )

First (force) quit Safari, iWeb and all other open applications.
Drag iWeb to the Trash, empty the trash. Restart mac. Recover iWeb from Time Mache backup before you made the mistake. -

Most of the time this works, however some of the time we get blank PDF files (<10KB), and sometimes we get filled PDF files that we cannot open in Adobe Reader X 10.1.4 - we get the "file is damaged and could not be repaired" error. However, I can view this "damaged" pdf just fine in the Chrome built-in PDF viewer, and I can open it using Foxit Reader and Nitro Reader. And if I open it in one of those programs and then save it under a new name, I can open the newly saved file in Adobe Reader. So why is it that everything except Adobe Reader can open this file?

from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again. -
Cannot use the application "Safari" with Leopard
When I try to open Safari in my non-admin account I get an error message reading 'You cannot use the application "Safari" with this version of Mac OS X'.
Bizarrely, if I logon as the admin account it works perfectly.
I have repaired permissions, run software update, repaired permissions again, logged in as SU and fscked and still the same thing. I discovered that Omni Outliner would open the plist but I don't have the knowledge to interpret that.
I think I have used Safari on this laptop since upgrading to Leopard. Most of the time I use Firefox so it hasn't been an issue anyway. The really bizarre thing is it works normally in the admin account.

I have found out what has gone wrong but I have no idea how.
I keep all my browsers in a subfolder of the applications folder. I trashed Safari with the intention of downloading a clean version from the Apple website. When I got there I couldn't find a version for OS X (there may be one, it just isn't obvious). So I thought I'd just try Safari one more time from my admin account. Of course the app wasn't in the browser folder. So I went to put it back in the applications folder with the intention of moving it from there to the browsers subfolder.
But no. There was already a newer version in the applications folder. How did it get there? I have no idea. But it opens. So I've moved it to the browsers subfolder and it still works.
So problem solved. I don't understand how it happened. And especially why it worked all along in the admin account.
