DiskWarrior won't boot holding down C key

I have one of the first Minis (with the single core). Last week while doing routine maintenance I found out something is wrong with the volume (a node or something). I tried using Disk Utility to fix it, which didn't work, so I purchased DiskWarrior. It finally got here today, but when I hold down the C key to restart with DiskWarrior it doesn't work. It restarts with the regular finder. The DiskWarrior instructions say not to use it as my startup disk. Can anyone help me? My computer is getting sicker all the time. Thanks!

You'll need a wired usb keyboard for the C key to work at restart. And the Apple Aluminum keyboard won't work either. But most PC usb keyboards will work.
Alternatively, you can hold down the menu button of the Apple remote at startup and it will give you a screen to choose the startup disk.
Keep in mind, too, that the version of DiskWarrior will have to be newer than your Mini.

    Hi artdiva28
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
First go to *System Preferences > Startup Disk* > select the *Mac OS X 10.5. on Macintosh HD* > click the Lock > hit the Restart button.
Then if the iMac is still having trouble starting up, insert your Install Disk and restart holding the Option key. In Startup Manager select the Install Disk and boot into it, choose your language, skip the Installer and go up on the menu bar to Utilities and open Disk Utility. In Disk Utility select your Macintosh HD and hit the Repair button. Once finished note any errors and what was repaired for future reference. Quit Disk Utility and restart once again holding the Option key boot back into the Macintosh HD and eject the Install Disk.

Sorry ... I read but was unfortunately distracted from your original post.  You have a system that came with Lion.  The Lion that is on your system is only for your computer and cannot be downloaded from the app store again because you never purchased it officially through the App Store.
Try this for making an external USB/DVD copy of Recovery on an external disk.  internet is still required for reinstall, though, I believe: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4848.  But at least you have a separate Recovery Partition if you ever need a fully new and empty internal disk.
Your assumption is incorrect. Although he may not be able to download it from the App store he can download it directly for the Apple servers using the recovery partition on his original drive.
All you have to do is start the install routine and then point the install to an external hard drive. Once the download is finished the computer will reboot to start the install. At that reboot disconnect the external drive so the install can not start. Boot the computer back into the OS on the internal hard drive, which is what will happen automatically once the external drive is disconnected. Then connect the external and copy the files from it that were downloaded. Right click on that downloaded package file and select Show contents. In the contents of that package is a file called InstallESD.DMG. Copy that file out of the package and burn it down to a DVD or USB thumb drive and you now have the Full Lion Installer. I have several of them laying around on different hard drives and 2 USB thumb drives which I have used to reinstall Lion on my 15" MBP.
Sorry OP I should of just typed this out in my first post.

  • HELP!  Is there a way to change column information in iTunes such as name of artist, genre etc, other than deleting them one at a time? Such as the way you delete an entire group of songs by holding down control keys or selecting the Select All command.

HELP!  Is there a way to change column information in iTunes such as name of artist, genre etc, other than deleting them one at a time? Such as the way you delete an entire group of songs by holding down control keys or selecting the Select All command. Thanks.

If you select all the songs you want to change, Be it one song or an akbum, or an Artist, Or Genre, or playlist. Then Right mouse click  and Get Info. You then get a slightly different from normal Get Info box as this is the One for Multiple items.
In there have a look at the tags and see if the one you want to changes is in there. There are a few tabs so if for example you wanted to change the Media Type from Home Movie to Movie go to the Options tab and select Movie and OK and it will change the whole selection.

  • I have multiple iPhoto libraries and when I selecting which library to view (hold down 'option' key and launch iPhoto from the dock) it automatically closes another open apps window eg. Chome, Word. 1 app closes every time I launch iPhoto this way.

I have multiple iPhoto libraries on my Macbook Air 10.7.5 and when I am selecting which library to view (hold down 'option' key and launch iPhoto from the dock) it automatically closes another open application window eg. Chome, Word. 1 app closes every time I launch iPhoto this way.

If you're pushing Option at the exact moment you're clicking the Dock icon, it's supposed to do that. Wait until just after clicking it.

  • How can you insert foreign letters into pages in Maverick? The old option of holding down the key has disappeared.

After downloading Mavericks on the MacBook Air, the ability to hold down a key and insert a foreign language symbol or letter disappeared. How can foreign language alphabet symbols/letters be inserted into Pages?

Are you still using the US keyboard layout?
Pending a solution to restore the Character Picker, you can use the traditional option key shortcuts for many characters, e.g. option + e, then e produces é.
Plus you can use Edit > Special Characters to bring up the Character Viewer.

Back up all data before proceeding.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled NO
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered. You can then quit Terminal. Log out or restart the computer.

  • When I boot, holding down Option, my hard disk appears twice

When I boot, holding down Option, and the hard drive picker appears, my internal drive appears twice.  Is that normal, and does it matter which one I click?

It's normal if you have a Fusion Drive, and it doesn't matter which one you click.

  • Troubles with remote installation on older macbook- problem arises when I restart computer while holding down option key

I've got remote disk sharing set up so I can upgrade my operating system from my desktop using snow leopard CD. My Macbook is able to read disk remotely and all goes well following directions for installation until I am supposed to hold down option key while restarting computer. When I do this, only my hard drive is an option for start up, not the hard drive and the disk as it shows in the instructions and pop up menu for start up. Why? What am I doing wrong with the start up? Also, it says I should be able to choose the Airport network, but my computer automatically connects and anyways, that is also not an option from the pop up menu (to choose a network and enter password), that pop up menu section doesn't show up at all, it goes right to choosing disc icon where only mac hard drive, not mac os x install, is an option. Does this make sense? I'm giving up for now.
    Thanks.

The only known way to make it work on an external drive is by first installing Windows onto an internal drive, then cloning the install to an external Thunderbolt drive. Thunderbolt is seen as an extension of the internal bus, so Windows doesn't see it as an external device.

  • Won't boot; shuts down

My very reliable Mac mini (bought in 2006) failed last night. Circumstances: I was installing a new software package (scan snap manager) via CD and the computer hung during the install. The pointer was a spinning beachball but it would move around screen. The keyboard had no effect. I had to shutdown the computer via the power button. After that the computer would shutdown shortly after a restart. I tried pressing the shift button, the control button, the option button and the command button during the restart. Finally, after web searches I did a SMC reset. Nothing happened and the CD remained in the computer.
Full disclosure, the superdrive had failed about a year ago with a disc inside and I took it to the Genius bar. They decided that the superdrive was flaky but managed to recover my disc after turning the computer on its side. They said that the drive needed to be replaced but that the computer wasn't worth the work. After several months I tried the drive again and it worked and has continued to do so. It's been used lightly. When I installed the software disc last night the drive immediately sounded very noisy so I suspect that the drive failed. I was unable to get the disc to eject using any technique I could find on the web so I opened the computer and physically removed the drive by unscrewing the superdrive cover. After doing that I replaced the screws and reassembled the computer. I was unable to start it and I eventually removed the superdrive. It's now not in the computer.
Since opening the computer, removing the disc and reassembling the computer I've had similar symptoms with or without the superdrive installed. They are as follows:
    Start the computer
    The LED comes on
    The boot chime sounds
    The screen stays dark
The LED goes off about 7 seconds after the boot chime and the computer is apparently shut down.
I can change the behavior by holding down the shift or control keys (perhaps other keys as well). In this case shortly after the boot chime sounds the grey screen comes on and the circle begins to spin. Then the LED goes off and the computer shuts down. The total time between the chime and the LED going off is still about 7 seconds.
    Any thoughts?

OK. The PRAM battery's replaced and the computer reassembled but the behavior is the same. Any further thoughts?

  • Holding down Shift key gives me "no" symbol and gear

I'm trying to start my Mac up in "safe" mode where all startup kernels and apps don't launch.
I thought this was traditionally done by holding down the Shift key at startup.
When a Mac is normally booted, a gray screen with Apple logo and rotating gear appear. But with the Shift key held down, the Apple logo is replaced with an international "No" icon (circle with diagonal line)... and the gear just rotates infinitely.

You have a hosed OS if restarting holding down the SHIFT key (safe mode) brings up the prohibitory sign. Zap the Pram and try again. If that doesn't fix it, reinstall the 10.6.4 COMBO update, repair permissions, and restart.

  • Netinstall images not showing up when holding down option key at startup

    Hi,
I have setup two Netinstall images on my 10.5.5 server. On the clients I can see the two images via the 'Startup Disk' tab in System Preferences. But the images are not showing up when holding down the option key at startup. As I am getting ready to deploy to two labs of new iMacs, I would like to be able to get the Option key at Startup method to work as per the documentation.
Any ideas why these images are not showing up as they should?

I am having this problem on a 10.5.5 NetBoot server too. I can NetBoot clients by selecting a network volume in System Preferences > Startup Disk, but I can not see the network volumes when option-booting. I am having problems NetBooting while holding down the N-key too. The funny thing is that it works on new Intel iMacs, but not on Mac Pro1.1 (even with the latest firmware updates). NetBooting the Mac Pro works fine when selecting a NetBoot volume in System Preferences > Startup Disk.
Does anybody have a solution? Is this a problem with Leopard Server 10.5.5?
I am running DeployStudio Server v1.0rc9, and the NetInstall set is made with DeployStudio Assistant.
Everything looks right with my bootpd.plist and log file.

  • Won't allow hold down delete (Mtn Lion)

For whatever reason, I can't press and hold down my delete key. It stops after deleting one character, rather than continuing on. The same goes for my arrow keys. If I hit shift twice, a white arrow appears locking everything into an "alt" key stage where all words are caplocks and all secondary characters become main. If I press command, a white command symbol appears and I don't even know what happens.
How do I make this stop?

There's a couple of possibilities. If the apps you're trying to delete were preinstalled apps, they can't be deleted.
If they're not preinstalled ones, then perhaps the ability to delete apps could be locked out via restrictions.
