Disparity in Free Space Reported

I don't know if I am the only one who is experiencing this, but there is a big disparity in the available free space on my hard drive being reported by the Get Info window and Disk Utility.
I took a screenshot and attached it to make what I am saying clearer, essentially, it appears that the used space and available free space is either incorrectly being reported or is swapped in either Disk Utility. I have already repaired both the permissions and the disk and rebooted multiple times. The only thing I can think of is that I did have a Boot Camp partition for a little while, but it was removed by the Boot Camp Assistant. I am going to report this to Apple, but I am curious if this is something other people have found.

The "Local Snapshots" that Time Machine makes on laptops aren't counted by the Finder or Get Info, because they'll be deleted if necessary in most circumstances.   See #30 in  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questionsfor details.

  • Difference between free space reported by my iPod Touch and iTunes

Why is so different the free space reported by my iPod Touch and iTunes?, which of both devices is reporting the correct free space?
also, I restored my iPod two days ago because "other" space was too big (almost a gig),
three days later, is over 500Mb, why is this happening?, thanks.
On the pic you can see the difference between the free space reported by my iPod (403 MB) and iTunes (0.29Gb)

I took the pic when I finished syncing, so that shouldn't be an issue, no matter how many times I sync, free space is never equal (iPod always reports more space).
I'm running iOS 5.0.1 and I restored three days ago because iTunes said I was out of space to sync (and my iPod reported over 100Mb free).
As you can see from the pic, I only have 9 apps, I mainly use this iPod for music. I'm using the AAC option to fit more songs.
I really like this iPod, but as a music player. I had a first generation iPod Touch and "other" space never was an issue, I still have warranty, but I don't know if I should take this iPod to the store because of this, because it seems to be a software issue.
Just deleted my emails from the iPod and gained 10 Mb, I don't know what else can I do.

  • AFP - Incorrect Free Space Reported

I have a G4 Xserve with Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 installed. I have two mirrored RAID's, both 500GB, and both created using Apple's Disk Utility program.
I have noticed that the free space reported over an AFP connection on my Macbook Pro (with OS 10.6.4) usually does not match the free space reported when using the server itself. As of this moment, my Macbook Pro reports ~423GB of free space on the network drive, while a "Get Info" on the server itself reports ~395GB.
SMB shares accessed via Windows report the correct amount of free space.
I have re-installed Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro (using Erase & Install... not for this problem though), so I'm pretty sure it's a problem on the Xserve's end.
It's not a huge deal right now, but I would like the correct amount of free space displayed for AFP users.

Thanks for the reply. I tried as you suggested (only I made several 4GB files, due to the FAT32 filesize limit). Whenever I encountered the supposed maximum, if I made a file slightly larger than the remaining space (my a megabyte or so), the remaining space would increase by 3GB. After doing this a few times, I tried deleting them (about 25GB-worth), and the free space went back to 15.03GB, as it was before.

I am using SCOM 2012 and report is good for windows 2012 servers. Any Help appreciated

    Hi There,
My way of getting this report is by using a SQL Query. I have a SQL Query which i Run in the Operationsmanager DB to get the Disk space below 20% on all my agents. Use the below SQL Query to do it.
My SQL Server uses GMT time (London UK time) so i enter london time here.
Just enter a time exactly 1Hr before time when you are running the query (If you are running the query at 1:00PM by yourself then in the bolded portion enter the time as 12:00PM).

  • Incorrect free space reported on FAT32 USB drive

I'm suspecting this is an issue deeper than Finder, but here we go:
I have an 80GB external drive that connects via USB and is formatted FAT32 (for compatibility with my Windows machine and PS3, so this can't change, unfortunately).
The other day, I noticed Finder reporting that only 15GB were available, which didn't seem right. After doing some checks, it is indeed wrong: I've only used 15GB. I've confirmed this with three different tools: Finder itself (using "get info"), the command 'du -csh' while in the drive's directory in /Volumes, and OmniDiskSweeper. All of them agree: only 15GB have been used, on an 80GB drive. Yet it still say it's 15GB free.
So I did a bit more checking. Figuring that I might not have partitioned it correctly, I had a look in fdisk, and the partition spans the whole drive. 'df -h' reports that the partition is 74GB in total, which sounds about right. But df also shows only 15GB remaining. Weird.
Wondering if I'd done an unsafe unmounting, I ran fsck on it, but that turned up nothing (I was hoping for orphaned inodes, but zilch). I know about the 4GB filesize limit on FAT32, and none of my files approach that (the largest being 3GB). I've done some searching online, and haven't found anything useful.
So, anyone heard of anything like this, or have any suggestions that I haven't tried, that aren't "use HFS+ or some other better fs"?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Incorrect free space reported on iOS4

I have two iPhone 3GS and have updated both to iOS4.
First was flawless, second all well except in iTunes the usage bar shows just a sliver of free space (was about 800MB prior to update) but it says 5 GB free.
The iPhone also shows 5GB free in the About screen.
I rebooted the iPhone but that didn't fix it.
    Anyone else notice this anomaly?

  • A200 Disk Space Report Problem

I have a problem with my A200. The disk size is 40GB and currently it has 15GB in use.
Occasionally the machine will suddenly start to report that the disk has only 40MB free space remaining - confirmed by checking properties for the disk under my computuer. After a reboot all goes back to normal with the correct free space reported.
Is this a known issue for this machine? I've seen there is a BIOS update available but can't see any details of the issues that it is meant to address.

    Hi,
in my opinion you should make a BIOS update.
Did you scan your HDD with a current antivirus software?
You can also run Scandisk and Defrag which are checking your HDD.

  • Systemdrive free space low

    Hi Everybody,
We have a server (dual 2.3GHz PPC 2G RAM) with 3 80G HDs. 2 are RAIDed together for user home directories and the 3rd is the system drive. Nothing is on it but OS X 10.4.11 Server. Yet there is only 7% free space reported in the Finder. The server serves a 25 seat graphic design lab with about 100 users in the WGM. The format is Mac OS X extended (journaled). The disk passes verfication with disk utility, and permissions check out OK too. All visible folders on system drive add up to less than 20G.
    What's going on here?
    TIA,
    David

I've figured out that the Library directory is large because of a few image files that we used with NetBoot to clone the lab workstations. I can move those image files off to a NAS drive which will gain some space.
But what's with /Volumes? It looks like I somehow made an erroneous copy of the student home folders from the RAID pair. Or is /Volumes used for caching? Maybe I did this when I was trying to set up the new NAS disk and make backups? I feel extremely stupid
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Iphone shows 1gb and itunes 3gb free space

Why is that my iphone storage shows that I only have 1GB free but when I sync it through itunes shows that there's 3GB free space on my iphone. Where does the 2GB goes? Because I really need those 2GB space on my iphone cause the last update took a lot of space so I can't even download apps or keep my photos and keep deleting them Please help.

Yes, I see the same thing with my iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.2.1 (also never jailbroken), although I’ve seen this for a while with previous iOS releases, maybe even before iTunes 10. I see variations anywhere from 500MB to 2GB or more during the sync.
At the end of the sync, the amount of free space reported by iTunes matches what the iPhone says, but it’s still strange — is there space being taken up by something that could be freed up?

  • Simple Disk Space report

    Hi All,
Can you guys have any simple disk space report to get total Disk and free Space for a group of servers

For disk free space report for a group computers
    1) Create a computer groups
    2) Reporting--> Microsoft Generic Report Library --> Performance Detail
    3) Create data series with object is computer group which you defined in 1) and rules as logical disk free megabytes 2008 and logical disk free megabytes windows server 2012
    4) Run the report
    5) View detail of each machine, you should click performance detail for each object
    For total disk,
    1) Create a custom group which contains all logical disk drive of conscious servers
    2) Reporting--> Microsoft Generic Report Library --> Custom Configuration
    3) In the object, select the group defined in 1)
    4) In reprt fields, select "Size MegaBytes"

  • Finder reports wrong amount of free space

Finder is reporting the wrong amount of free space on all my drives.  It's not from time machine local backups, because I've disabled those.  In fact, it's reporting MORE free space than there should be!  In all cases, Disk Utility shows the correct amount.  (So does the Terminal command df.)
    eg:
external 120GB hard drive (USB) - finder says 137.83GB free (more than the drive can hold, nice) - disk util says 70 used 49.9 free... better
external 1TB (firewire) - finder says 276.66GB free - disk util says 783.72 used 216.15 free
internal 120GB SSD - finder says 108.32GB - disk util says 78.6GB used, 40.5 free
    Anyway to fix Finder?

I noticed the same problem. I assumed it was from Time Machine's local backups (which exactly account for the space discrepancy between Finder and Disk Utility on my machine). But, as you say, you've disabled Time Machine local "snapshots." I can only assume you deleted the local backups (to free up the space they were using), emptied your Trash and are still showing the discrepancy.

  • Inconsistent Reporting of Free Space on the HDD

Activity Monitor shows Disk Usage as follows: Space utilized = 397.48 GB and Space free = 101.77 GB.
About This Mac - Storage indicates 101.5 GB Free and 164.46 GB Backups (???).
Right clicking on Macintosh HD in Finder and then on Get info reports: Used = 233.28 GB and Available = 265.97 GB.
Why the discrepancy? I believe the latter is more correct but what is going on? Or, do I have a virus or something eating up the free space on my hard drive? These discrepancies did not exist before in Snow Leopard.
    What gives?...

    Michael9009 wrote:
    Thanks, it all makes sense.
But it is still not clear to me why Apple made this so confusing. For example, I think that both the Activity Monitor and Finder should report the same values, i.e. the Activity Monitor should not include the backups.
The Activity Monitor is a administration utility and have to show complete values, e.g. for troubleshooting.
Finder is a user utility and have to show the available space for a user, regardless of files like backups, swap, trash or cache that will be shrink or deleted when the space become less or needed to store user data.

  • TimeMachine reports "Backup Disc full" but TC has still 250 GB free space

    Hi
i have a little problem with my TC 500GB. After a few backups which worked fine, my TC reported that the backup Volume is full and that TM has to delete an older backup. But my TC has still 250 GB free space (as shown in the airport utility and over the finder).
I have only one partition or drive on my TC (as shipped).
The first solution for me would be to erase the drive on the TC and Reset it. But i would like to avoid to backup my files again over wireless lan.
Any ideas how to solve this problem without deleting the drive on the TC and resetting it?
    thanks

    Hi,
Have you received any responses at all to this? It doesn't seem so.
I have exactly the same problem with a 1TB TC and my wife's MB C2D. It had some problems backing up for a while (apparently due to all the wireless issues being reported on these discussion boards - and NOT due to DNSchanger, I've checked). After I managed to get it backed up again by plugging in direct and left backing up overnight, it is now reporting that the backup disk is "almost full". However, there's over 450GB of space left and my MacBook Pro, which also backs up to the same TC is not reporting any issues.
If anyone knows what the solution might be, please let me know.
    Rgds,
    Guy

  • ITunes syncing error reports not enough free space

Having an issue with syncing the iPad where iTunes reports that there is not enough free space to transfer the selected data. In this case it was an app(The Elements) which is 1.78 GB. The iPad has 3.8 GB free space, yet the app cannot be transfered because there is "Insufficient space". I used to see the same problem with my iPhone when attempting to sync back the photos i just copied off the camera app. There is definately free space, but iTunes seems to see something different than what is reported.
BTW. I could not sync the app to the iPad using iTunes, but there was enough free space to directly download the app on the iPad. Seems like a problem with iTunes to me.
Is iTunes and the iPad reporting an incorrect amount of free space? Can iTunes be forced to transfer apps without checking for the amount of free space? Any other ideas?

It seems like double the size of the app is needed to install it on the device.

  • Difference in reporting free space on my drive

    Hi all,
I have a macbook pro 2011 running Lion on a 500GB HDD. I am having a small issue in reading how much free space do I have on my hard drive.
The status bar in the Finder window reports:
    DiskUtility.app reports:
I don't have any partitions on the hard drive (other than what Lion creates on it's own) and "Macintosh HD" is the only drive I have. I do use time machine and I have already disabled local backups but the difference in free space stays. I am just not sure what is causing this huge difference. If it was a couple of GBs I'd happily ignore but this is more than 80GB.
    Any idea?

    malikons wrote:
the next day Finder synced with DiskUtility automagically. I think it takes time to remove the local backups.
Yes, especially on a busy system, and if there were a lot of files involved.
I rebooted my macbook into recovery mode and fixed the hard drive errors. So, I believe, fixing the HDD errors and disabling local backups eventually fixed the issue.
Yup, directory errors can cause all sorts of weirdness.
