Display at 0% or 100% brightness

Today I noticed that my early 2009 MBP 15" screen's display no longer respond to my brightness keys. It is either at 0% or 100% and the switchover is at the halfway mark. Also, the blue led at the front is not on anymore, only when sleeping.
I just did the latest itunes update, could that be part of it? Or is it some hardware problem?

also the blue light, you mean the sleep indicator light?
that white light only appears when it is in sleep mode anyway. or when connected to an external display and in clamshell mode.

  • Thinkpad L512 display doesn't reach full brightness

My 2 month old Thinkpad L512 display doesn't reach full brightness, except for a few seconds after bootup. Then it dims down to maybe 8 or so on a scale of 1-10. Which is often good indoors, but in a bright situation, I could use the extra screen brightness.
The screen correctly dims significantly (to maybe 2 or so on a scale of 1-10) after siting idle for a few minutes, as specified in the Power settings. But when it recovers, it is at full brightness for 10 seconds or so, then dims back down to 8 and stays there until I repeat the cycle.
I have poked around in the Display and Power settings, and the display is set to 100% there.
    Any ideas? Thanks!
    David

I had this problem with several of my machines.  I noticed that if you unplugged the power and plugged it back in, the machine would jump back up to the brightest setting.  But if you tried to adjust the brightness down and *then* back up, it would never reach the highest brightness.
I tried reinstalling the Power Management Driver and reinstalling Power Manager itself (both to no avail).  I tried to downgrade to BIOS 1.20 but that didn't really have an effect either.
Finally, I downgraded to BIOS 1.19 and that resolved the issue.  However, now I'm having an issue where the brightness changes two settings every time you hit the button (which was supposedly fixed in 1.20...though I had the same issue in 1.21).
I'm pretty frustrated with this machine.  Hopefully the *next* BIOS resolves all of brightness related the issues...

  • Display alternates between dark and bright

I have several issues but I suspect somehow they are all related as they all began about the same time, within about an hour of each other, which was maybe a week ago.
Periodically, my display slowly cycles between dark and bright.  Sometimes the display will suddenly go to sleep on it's own, usually after a period of about 20 seconds of me not doing something and when I wake it up the display is quite dim.  Other times the computer goes to sleep (not just the display) requiring me to log back on.  I use password for startup.  I open the display settings after log-on and the brightness slider has somehow moved way over to the dark end (left).  I slide it up to where I like it and soon it does it again all by itself again after a very short period of inactivity.  I have noticed that if I leave the brightness control alone (dim) without readjusting it it seems to take longer for the other issues to develop.  I would normally place the brightness slider just under half way up.  My sleep time settings are currently: computer - 1 hr, display 15 min.  That is plugged in which is pretty much the only way I ever seem to use it ... plugged in.
Another issue is an occaisional rapid beeping.  It's the same low beep that you hear when you try to do something stupid and the computer is telling you you've made an error.  The difference is this is a long, unending string of rapid beeps; I'd estimate maybe 15 - 20 beeps per second.  The sound does not stop.  I have to mute the speakers to shut it up.  I have not yet been able to determine a recognizable pattern of common variables for when this happens.  The other day when the computer went to sleep by itself and I woke it and tried to input my password and I saw that the input bar was filled with black balls as if it was remembering my password which I did not like but when I hit enter the logon dilaog box shook, the entry field emptied and refilled on it's own.  I held the backspace key for several seconds and nothing seemed to happen.  I used shift/command/arrow to highlight the entire string and deleted it but as soon as the characters were deleted I saw the input line quickly fill back up again one ball at a time at roughly the same rate as the beeps.  Then it occured to me that the beeps were similar to those you would hear if you held a key down and filled an entire entry field with a hundred of a particular character and was still holding down the key long after the field was full.  My first thought was that a key was stuck down.  Not so.  Each and every key is free to move and functions normally.
Last night I closed the lid to put the computer to put it sleep before I went to bed.  About 3 hours later I was awakened by the sound of the rapid beeping.  I got out of bed and went to the computer and opened the lid to find the same input line black balls issue but this time it was accompanied by the beeping and the display was also cycling between bright and dim.  As it was the middle of the night I killed the machine by holding down the power button and forcing a shutdown.  This evening I decided to do the upgrade from 10.9.1 to 10.9.2 hoping that might help but it did not.  I have not heard the beeping since the upgrade but the display is still cycling, which was the first thing I noticed when all of this began.

Turns out it may have been sofware issue.  I suspected software anyway because rebooting could temporarily cure it.  I spoke to an Apple Service and Support person on the phone.  She went through a fairly lengthy process with me to evaluate the machine and determine if it was hardware or software related.   The results of those steps did not lead her to any concrete conclusions but she was able to hear the beeping issue happening in real time.   She guided me through the steps of O/S recovery and now several hours later the machine appears to be functioning as it is supposed to.  Typically the issue(s) would show up after maybe twenty minutes or a half hour after a hard boot.  I am to monitor the thing for the next week or so watching for any signs of the issues slowly returning.
    Here's keeping my fingers crossed.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I'll presume that you can adjust the brightness after bootup. If that display preference is kept in PRAM, it's possible that the PRAM battery is wearing out.
Here's what Apple says about what's stored in PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1242
To test that possibility, turn off "Set date and time automatically" in the Date & Time panel of System Preferences (if it's set), shut down and unplug your Mac, then let it sit for a few minutes. When you reboot it, check the system date and time. If the PRAM battery is failing, those may be set incorrectly.
iFixit describes replacing the PRAM battery of an iMac G5 as of "moderate" difficulty. See these pages:

  • Retina Display MBPs have 20% lower brightness than non-retinas?

I've been waiting until going off to graduate school to make a new computer purchase, and when I saw the MBP with Retina I thought that this was the computer for me.  I do a ton of photography work, and Aperture is my lifeline, so the retina display really seemed like one of the best things that could happen to a Mac.
I went into the Apple Store yesterday and left extremely disappointed, however.  The new MBPs were stupid fast and truly a work of engineering art, but there was one thing that I just could not shake...
The screen seemed dim at max brightness.
Because the laptops were locked down, I asked a customer who had last year's model of the MBP to place it side-by-side with the Retina one at max brightness.  While the retina display was clearly sharper and far more vivid, it was significantly dimmer than last year's model.
Sure enough, a google search showed that the retina display uses 4x the battery life of a non-retina display because it has to push 4x the pixels.  To conserve battery, Apple lowered the maximum level of brightness that the display can reach by 20%.
This is a huge bummer (though understandable).  I often work with my screens at maximum brightness.  In the Apple Store, with the powerful fluorescent lighting, light color interior design, and the huge windows letting in a lot of light, it really emphasized how dim the retina monitor appeared.  While some people argue that the retina display's superior black levels make up for this loss in screen backlighting, I would have to respectfully disagree.
I was wondering if there is any way that this limitation on screen brightness is an artificial software limitation imposed by Apple?  If yes, and there is a workaround to force the brightness to 20% higher to match last year's MBP model, I will instantly buy the MBP with Retina (whenever one gets in stock!).  It is truly an incredible machine, but for my purposes it is severely hindered without a screen that "pops".
I am not too familiar with how the technology in a monitor works to create brightness, so perhaps this is a hardware limitation.  In that case, I think I will consider an MBA...  But I'd really rather the superior hardware, especially the dedicated graphics card for when I'm pushing the computer on a multi-monitor setup.

I think one of the reasons is a hardware limitation. Look at these pictures of various LCD screens and resolutions under a microscope and compare the iPad retina and iPad 2.
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/5689/the-new-ipad-retina-display-analysis/2
Notice how much of the surface area is actually black compared to the tiny pixels, and how the tiny pixels just can't be as bright as huge pixels. Why is this? While four green Retina pixels are roughly the same size as one non-Retina pixel, the hi-res four pixel combo has to be darker because in the same amount of space, the hi-res combo must have black grid lines occupying a significant part of its surface area.
It has been said that because the amount of black grid also goes up as the number of pixels goes up, the Retina display requires more power to push the backlight through the black grid and brighten up those tiny pixels to the same level as the older bigger pixels. It looks like part of the problem is inherent in LCD technology itself, and if there was another practical mass-production technology that could be used that could eliminate the black grid altogether, brightness could go up by quite a lot.
In one sense I won't mind a dimmer display, because when working with images, modern LCDs are often too bright if you're trying to calibrate to paper brightness levels and so I often run my MBP below maximum brightness. But when working next to sunny windows, trying to overcome gloss reflections and glare, or general use, it's nice to have a bright screen.

  • How to display a page at 100% size?

When I put the zoom at 100%, the page appears much smaller than real. My monitor is a 24" 1920x1200 pixels with 0.27 mm pixel size (that is 94 dpi)
I suppose there has to be some way to tell illustrator my screen has 94 dpi for it to display pages at the correct size, but I can't locate it.
In Adobe Photoshop this option is at Preferences/Units and Rulers but where is in Illustrator?

When you set in Photoshop "preferences/Units and rulers/Screen resolution" (I'm translating from my spanish menus, so it can be slightly different in english), you are telling the program what is the size of the pixels in your screen. This is enough for the computer to know how to display an image at the real size. If you make a DIN A4 document at 300 dpi in Photoshop, and you have set the mentioned parameter correctly, when you choose "View/Print size", you obtain in your screen a view of the document at the size it is supposed to be printed (so the document will occupy in the screen exactly 29,7 x 21 cm). Note this is different from 100% view (or "Real Pixels"). The fact this parameter is under "Preset resolutions for new documents" is a bit confusing, but it affects how you see any document at Print size, not only the new documents and is totally different from "Print resolution" (but depends on it). You can change the print resolution of any old document at "Image/Image Size..." but you can't change "its" screen resolution because this is a parameter of your computer screen, not of your document.
If you want to obtain the same effect in Microsoft Word, you have to go to "Control Panel/Screen/Configuration/Advanced Options/General/Dots per Inch Configuration" and this parameter will affect Microsoft Word. When you set the zoom lever at 100% in Word, again you will obtain  in your screen a view of the document at the size it is supposed to be printed.
In Corel Draw, the corresponding parameter is at "Tools/Options/tool Box/Zoom Tool/Calibrate rulers...". There you can set the parameter numerically or you can use a set of on screen rulers to calibrate it. So when you set the zoom lever at 100%, again you will obtain in your screen a view of the document at the size it is supposed to be printed.
Notice you're working with vectors in Corel DRaw and Word (well, vector pictograms of letters or as we all know them: fonts) but you are working with bitmaps in Photoshop. That's why the 100% zoom is different in Photoshop than in the other programs (including Illustrator).  and that's also why Photoshop has the Print size option. In the other programs, Print size and 100% would be the same but not in a bitmap program.
If you take a look in your monitor user manual you most likely will find a page of specifications where it tells you the dot size. This parameter can vary in CRT monitors that raster the image on a phosphor screen but is fixed in LCD monitors that have a fixed led matrix. If you don't have the manual or have a CRT monitor you can calculate the parameter by measuring the display size horizontally  (from leftmost to rightmost displayed pixel) and dividing it by your screen resolution (the number of horizontal pixels).
In my User manual it says the dot size is 0.27 mm, that means 94 dpi (25.4 mm in an inch divided by 0.27). Or, in case I would have lost the manual, I would just measured the scren width and obtained 518.5 mm that divided by 1920 pixels horizontal resolution gives a result of 0.27 mm per pixel.
So, my question is ¿Is there some way of setting this parameter in Illustrator?

  • T510 DISPLAY Issue: Intermittent high Contrast/Brightness

Hi folks - This is my first Lenovo forum submission and I will do my best to describe the problem with my laptops' video/display. I'm all ears for your suggestions.
    *Issue*
The display would occassionally dip down in brightness/contrast then change up to a very HIGH contrast level on its own. The desktop icons, background image & browser images become un-sightly bright BEYOND your normal Lenovo Power Manager settings. All the white hues turn even brighter, and some hues are NOT viewable at all on certain backdrops. Usually, it resolves itself after several minutes. Then it's business as usual.
I do not believe it has anything to do with the Power Manager settings (e.g. Idle Time, brightness control, Battery vs AC power, etc.). It simply occurs on it's own then disappears. A reboot can help and so does closing the lid and re-logging into Windows. But who wants to practice that technique after paying over $1600 for a professional grade business laptop?
I found only ONE forum message that came close to reporting the problem, found in the body of a message and NOT as a subject (SEARCH:  "screen image fades as if you lose contrast")

  • Using Windows 7 Display Won't Adjust Screen Brightness

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 running on my MacBook Pro from January, 2012. My screen will not adjdust brightness. Not using the F1 & F2 hotkeys (The window will pop up showing I'm pressing up and down on the screen brightness but nothing changes) even going in to Windows 7 control panel will not change this. I can't change the brightness or turn off the display with the hotkeys or in Windows 7 settings. I have BootCamp installed. Any body have the same problem or know how to fix it. I've tried updating my graphics drivers but I don't think it worked.

Take it to the Genius Bar. Your SIM might have an issue. The SIM is the part that manages power. My brother's Macbook Air has this issue. What haapens is the SIM malfunctions and gets confused on how much power to send to each part. Other symptoms include fan always running (even when its been off for a while), and you can't adjust the screen or keyboard brightness.

  • Can you horizontal shift the display of the XVR-100 ?

An odd problem with a few Blade 1500's with XVR-100 video cards...
Recently been given Samsung monitors with native resolutions of 1920x1080, so using them as secondary monitors with xinerama (primary Sun monitor is 1920x1200).
They work OK and detect properly in fbconfig except I can't get the monitor to autoadjust properly.  It seems the display is shifted about 1 inch to the left, cutting off the display and leaving empty space on the right.  Somehow I need to shift the display output to the right but the monitor itself stupidly has no manual adjustments (not to that shift distance anyway).
The only current fix I have is to drop the resolution down to the next available supported which is 1600x1200, then the autoadjust works and centres the screen, but with blurry non-native results.
I cant figure out if it's a compatibility problem with the monitors and cards, buggy driver (Solaris 10), or something else.  I don't have any other model card to test with or other monitor brands with the same native resolutions so I can only shrug and live with the dropped resolution for now.
Oddly, the "Sun XVR-100 Graphics Accelerator Installation Guide" Table 1-1 says the resolution is supported, but the "Oracle Systems Handbook" does not.  I wonder if maybe it's a bad res?
    Any thoughts, people running 1920x1080?

    Thanks Pascal
Whats your opinion of the XVR-600, I might be able to get my hands on one to test but might take some effort and don't want to waste my time if you think it will suffer the same problem   If it works I'll consider buying some second-hand.
Is there a way to identify and specify the sync frequencies in a configuration for fbconfig to then use (we're using Solaris 10 Java Desktop, Xsun)?  It's a bit out of my knowledge area.
Can 3rd party cards be used in the Blade 1500 or only Sun cards?  I know I'm stretching, but also learning.

  • How to get xfce-notifyd to display Thinkpad T40 volume and brightness

I'm running XFCE 4.8 on a Thinkpad T40. The volume and brightness buttons are wired directly to the hardware, and I can also view the current level of the volume and brightness in /proc/acpi/ibm/.
    cat /proc/acpi/ibm/volume returns something like:
    level: 1
    mute: off
and cat /proc/acpi/ibm/britghtness has something like:
    level: 7
    commands: up, down
    commands: level <level> (<level> is 0-7)
The "level" numbers change appropriately. In XFCE I know that notifications are working properly by testing it via the Settings panel and doing a notify-send test. How do I link the notifications to the volume and brightness to get their respective notifications to appear?
    Thanks very much!

OK, here's how the volume bar works in all Media Center (2004-2005) and how to change it :
Create a .txt file with the following :
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Media Center\VolumeDisplay]
    "Disable"=dword:00000000
    "FontSize"=dword:00000024
    "Color"=dword:00ffffff
    "Timeout"=dword:000003e8
    Don't include the --------
Now here are what the settings do:
Disable: (enable or disable the volume bar)
    - 00000000 (bar is shown)
    - 00000001 (bar is hidden)
FontSize: (decide the font sized used to display the word "volume")
    - 00000024 is font size 36 (it's hexadecimal value), for exemple 00000014 is fontsize 20, etc..
Color: (the color of the control bar and of the word "volume")
00ffffff corresponds to white, 00000000 corresponds to black. also hexadecimal.
If you want an easy way to find out, just check the color you want in HTML:
If HTML is #00AAFF for exemple, then you need to put value 00FFAA00, or for HTML #556677, the value will be 00776655
Timeout: (it represent the duration of displaying the volume bar)
    000003e8 corrsponds to 1000 ms = 1 seconde. For exemple, 1,5 second is 000005dc, or 2 second is 000007d0
So replace accordingly the above with the value that you like, save as "bar.reg" then double click on it and reboot the PC!
Enjoy, it was quite a hassle to find those keys because they don't exist initially! (and because for each try, I must reboot.. :/ )
    Later,
    Alcahest
ps: it works on ALL Qosmio machines ;)

  • L675D Windows 8.1 Display Fix (Can't adjust brightness in settings charm)

I performed a clean install of Windows 8.1 Professional 64-bit (courtesy Dreamspark), and I noticed that I could not adjust the brightness setting using the "Settings" charm or in the control panel (in the charms-bar the brightness setting was greyed out).  My exact model is L675D-S7013, and the specification states that the laptop has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 Graphics [card].  The "Automatically Detect and Install Your Driver" tool (from their website: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download) was unsuccessful, so I instead downloaded the Windows 8 x64 AMD software at: http://www2.ati.com/drivers/legacy/13-1-legacy_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc.exe and installed it using the defaulted options and it seems to be working fine.  It also fixed the screen resolution.  Note that this was done after installing all available updates from Windows Update.

  • Displaying three charts in 100% width window

    Hello
I have a page with three charts, I need to display them in the same window, in order that the user compares them.
I have change the Start New Row Grid attribute to No, so I could see them in the same row, but the charts are too big that I have to move the scroll to the right  to see the last chart.
May I change some attribute in order to see them in the same window reducing the size of each one?
    Thanks a lot and regard,
    Eva

    Hi Eva,
You can set the height and width of each chart under the chart attributes, in the section "Chart Settings". Note that fitting it to your screen depends on your screen resolution and therefore appearance might vary between monitors that use different resolutions.

  • Win 7 Brightness doesn't work after graphics update

    Hey,
I have a late-2010 MacBook Pro running Bootcamp 4.0 with Windows 7 64-bit. My graphics card is the nVidia GeForce 320m. I looked online recently and found that there was an update available for my graphics card (previously I had the one that comes with bootcamp, which is from 2009 I believe--quite outdated you see). So I installed it, hoping for better DX11 support, etc... It installed fine, but now my display is stuck on 100% brightness, when before I could adjust it with the F1 and F2 keys. When I try using the keys it shows the Apple popup with the slider moving, but the brightness doesn't change. I went into Control Panel > Power Settings and tried adjusting it from there, with no luck. The nVidia Control Panel doesn't have any satisfactory controls to do this either. It must be, of course, that the driver update changed things, but I'm not sure how to rectify the situation. I uninstalled the Apple Driver-Display from Control Panel and then re-installed from the Bootcamp files, but it didn't help. I've heard some talk about Apple Cinema Display, but I'm not sure if that's the same thing as the Display and whether I should be looking for a driver for it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've come to the same conclusion. I tried installing different versions of the driver, but they all introduced some problem or other. It seems the only way to have everything work correctly is to use the old driver they provided. Too bad, really. Especially because I tried installing the Windows 8 preview, and unless the release version has more compatibility (unlikely), it won't work on my MacBook Pro.
For my next computer I'll follow Shootist007's advice and just buy a PC. I haven't been impressed by my mac, and OS X needs a little more work IMO.
Sorry I couldn't provide more help to anyone with the same issue! It seems Apple released this computer with an outdated driver and then abandoned support for it.
