Display brightness control not in Prefs Pane

I'm using an Apple 23" sinema display. The brightness control used to appear in the System Prefs, but it no longer shows up. I unplugged all peripherals, but I can no longer get the slider to appear. Any thoughts?

Display brightness is done via USB.  Is the display's USB cable connected to the computer?  With older (plasic case) Apple displays, the USB circuitry can fail.  This can cause problems with the brightness slider, USB ports on the display, and computer sleep.  Unplugging everything from the display for a few minutes may fix it for a while.

  • 24" Display Brightness Control

I have a new 24" Apple display connect to my 15" MBP but have no brightness control. Slim keyboard's F1 & F2 button do not work and there is no brightness slider under the display system preferences.
Running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 all software up to date.
Anyone have any thoughts? Any help or suggestions are obviously welcomed.

    Hi guys,
could you kindly verify whether your screen have uniform color?
On my 24" led cinema display I realized that moving a white Word sheet all over the screen, in some areas it is neutral, in other areas (lower right corner) it has a greenish tint.
Has someone else experienced the same problem?
(Please before answering test the issue in the same way I did!).
    Thanks for your answers.

  • HP Pavilion 17" AMDA10 F2 F3 brightness control not working after win10 install

After installing windows 10 my brightness controls F2,F3 stopped working. I found this out because after the install my laptops display was super bright and i tried to tone it down using the function keys.I did download the AMD catalyst control and can turn it down there, but my function keys for it are not working, is there a planned update to fix this issue? Thanks

Hi there ,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great site to get answers and ask questions. Have you tried in the Device Manager to update the driver that is currently installed? In the device manager try selecting find new hardware.  At this time, I have a document to assist with Using the Function Keys. You can uninstall your keyboard driver, restart your Notebook, then reinstall the drivers. The HP Support Assistant can help you. Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that need updating for Windows 10. Here is troubleshooting when drivers are not available yet. Updated Windows 10 drivers will become available on the HP Drivers and Downloads Page for your product. They will be released as they become available to HP. Have a great day!

  • Dual 20" Apple Cinema Displays brightness control

    Hello all,
Finally added a 2nd 20" Cinema Display to my setup. When I first got the new display hooked up (used from eBay, but in great condition) I noticed that it was pretty dark so I went to adjust the brightness... but the buttons on the side of the display didn't work and there was no brightness slider on the preferences pane for that display. The primary display DID have the brightness control.
Does anyone know what might be causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've been trying to figure out why I couldn't change the brightness on the 20" cinema display connected to my MacBook Pro and now I know the reason. Thanks for this question and answer.
Shouldn't such a simple and necessary thing be made clear in the MacBook Pro manual?

  • Brightness control not working in Windows 8 x64 after sleep with Boot Camp 5.0.2

    Hi,
I am using Boot Camp 5.0.2 with Windows 8 x64.
Wheen the computer has been in sleep mode, and wakes up again, the brightness control won't work as expected.
Usually the screen is to dark (darker than before, what it should be), and after some time pops up brighter as it should be.
Has onyone else seen this issue?
I mean, it seems that for brightness we use the internal control GUI of Windows 8, and not the Apple one that is used in Windows 7 and in Windows 8 for the sound control.
Macbook Pro 13" Retina, early 2013 (brand new) with 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD and 3.0GHz i7.

I have been having the issue of no brighness control when running windows through bootcamp for about 6 months now and have not found any applicable solution online.
While messing around trying to figure it out yet again I noticed that my monitor driver was signed by team viewer...
Sure enough clicking the roll driver back button resolved the issue by rolling the driver back to the Microsoft driver...
    So long story short:
Right click "My Computer" click properties
Click device manager (lop left of window)
    Expand Monitors section
    Double Click monitor
    Click driver tab
If the driver here is not signed by Microsot or Apple click the roll back button. My driver version is 6.1.7600.16385 (Driver date 6/21/2006)
Rolling this back instantly resolved my issue. I will now propagate this post to all the threads I saw regarding this issue.

  • MacBook display brightness will not adjust

My MacBook display brightness is very low level, the F1 and F2 brightness keys bring up the transparent window and show brightness turned all the way down, but F2 does not increase the brightness. In Preferences, the display section shows the Brightness slider all the way to the top, and if I attempt to slide that down it snaps back to the top, and the actual screen brightness does not change from very low. I also have verified that the function keys are NOT set to lock out the brightness function, so pressing command and F1/F2 does nothing. So nothing from previous forums seems to apply! All other function keys operate properly (multi-window, volume, dashboard).

OK guys, think I found a solution to this one.
My girlfriend's mac had the same problem as yours, and I was motivated to fix it becuase I needed to use my mac for my dissertation and she kept stealing it!
anyway, turn the brightness all the way down, press it up once and you will see the screen flash. do it again, really fast up and down up and down and the scree will stay on as long as you keep playing with the buttons.
next, use this temporary fix to get into system preferences -> displays... and change the resolution to something considerably lower. then it stays on permanently. Not too sure about why this happens, maybe the mac can no longer handle that many colours or complexities?
    sod it. enjoy.

  • Macbook Pro Brightness Controls Not Working

Ok, this is really weird. I have a Macbook Pro and after installing the new aluminum keyboard with the Keyboard 1.2 update my brightness controls in OSX no longer work. The weird part is if I go into Windows via Boot Camp my brightness controls (F1,F2) work fine. In Display Properties in OSX there is no brightness slider.
    Can anyone help? Thank you.

"I just tried this. Go into System Preferences -> Display. Turn off Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes. Now move the Brightness slider right and left, left and right. Turn on Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes. When I changed it from far left to right then left again it was ok."
Hey, thanks for the tip Neil. I was trying to figure out why my computer would dim and then get brighter. It would keep changing after every little thing i'd do. Honestly, it was freakin annoying.

  • Brightness Control not working after Windows 8 install...

    Hi All,
I have a late year 2010 MBA core2duo with 4GB of ram, and I was running Windows 7 for a long time and recently bought a Windows 8 upgrade key. I heard the boot camp drivers were updated so I decided to load it up. I installed the new boot camp drivers on the Windows 7 side before the upgrade (had to use the command line to do the driver upgrade).
Windows 8 is all installed and the only issue I have is the brightness control doesnt work at all. I disabled the adaptive brightness as a lot of threads have been saying. Anybody have any ideas what I need to do to fix this?? It seems to be stuck on BRIGHT.

  • Brightness control not working after sleep

Sometimes, after I close the lid for some time and then open the lid again (putting the computer to sleep?) the screen is very dim and the brightness controls don't work. Solution seems to be rebooting the computer. Apparently this problem has been around for a long time:
    2009 https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1147601?start=0&tstart=0
    2007 https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1119174?start=0&tstart=0
I'm on a (nearly) brand new five-thousand dollar MacBook Pro with the latest OS (Lion?) with all the software and firmware updates, and the laptop has been rebuilt twice by the genius bar at the Apple store due to a faulty solid state disk drive and a subsequent disk corruption issue. And, let me just throw in for any Apple engineers who might be listening, that if I close the lid (sleep?) when my laptop is fully charged, it will be dead, or nearly dead by the next day. I've got an $800 two year old Asus that I closed the lid on and came back to weeks later and it still had nearly a full charge (I opened it up and went right on working for a couple of hours). Very disappointing for a $5,000 computer! But I digress...
I'm sure the battery situation is hopeless, but is there any hope for a resolution to the brightness control?
And let me just say that I very much appreciate all the hard work and helpfullness of the good folks at the Apple store and on this forum. It's not your fault this $5,000 machine has such aggrivating shortcomings. It's like buying a Ferarri (yes, I admit...it's a Ferarri) with a door that won't open and windshield wipers that don't work. And you know what's worse is those TV commercials where the Mac's are smugly portrayed as such superior machines...OK, sorry...I'll stop.
Off to reboot so I can see the screen...any help would be appreciated.

  • Software Brightness Controls Not Working (Dell D630)

I've just encountered a problem with my software brightness controls on a fresh install of Archlinux (using KDE as the desktop environment).  I can adjust my display's brightness to my heart's content using the brightness keys on my keyboard, but none of the stuff in KDE power management works.  In addition, I've also tried the xbacklight program without success.  It doesn't give me any errors, it just fails to adjust the backlight at all.  Any ideas why this is happening and what I might be able to do to fix it?
    Thanks!

  • Display brightness control lost

    Dear fellow MAC users!
I'm using my 1GHz PowerBook G4 for almost three years now an I never had any problems with the display or ALS, neither under Jaguar, nor under Panther, nor under Tiger.
However, since yesterday I'm not able to change the brightness of my display. The keys "F1" and "F2" simply don't work (and the ALS seems to be turned off, as the keys "F8", "F9" and "F10" don't work either).
At first, yesterday my display was dimmed. After resetting the PMU (Shift-Control-Option-Power) and resetting PRAM and NVRAM (Command-Option-P-R) my display is working at the brightest setting now.
But when I open System preferences/displays then the option to adjust the screen brightness and the box to check whether the screen shall adjust automatically simply are NOT THERE.
I hope strongly that anyone out there has a solution for tnis problem! Are therer any experiences with this issue? Do I simpy have to reinstall Tiger?
    Thanks for any suggestions!!
    Regards,
    Matthias
    17" PowerBook G4 1GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    I simply re-installed Tiger.
I have to say . . . and obviously I am speaking only for myself . . . since this happens infrequently and is solved by a restart, the payback timewise is about seventeen years.
I'm disappointed that there's no attention to this one by Apple. The "gee, I have a problem, I need to reboot" or "Gee, I need to re-install the OS" is a distinctly Microsoft mentality, and one of the reasons I switched to Apple. It is exactly this kind of little insignificant irritation, multiplied by 50 or so, that makes the difference between the pleasure of using an Apple and the pain of using a Microsoft system. OK, so we've got 49 to go. But I do hope that Apple doesn't slip into the mentality of "Oh, it's just a tiny problem, not worth working on." It's the little things that make the difference.

  • Lion display brightness preference not saved

Since upgrading to Lion the brightness on start-up on my 2010 MBP remains low despite resetting brightness to maximum on Displays preference pane.
Energy saver is set not to dim before shutdown.
I can increase brightness with function keys and there are no external displays attached, NIVIDA graphics card
    Auto brightness adjustment unchecked.
    Any thoughts appreciated.

I am having the exact same problem.  It is unaffected by the setting to automatically adjust brightness.

  • F1 & F2 Keys + Brightness controls not working

I just came home with my Brand new Macbook Pro 17" i7 and as soon as I try to control the brightness with either F1/F2 or the slider in Preferences nothing happens???? Do i have to take the computer back to the store again??

    Lasse
If the F1 and F2 keys are not working you should take it back, perhaps it's a hardware issue. I know it is a pain to take it back, but that's what I would do. I would also try the MBP in the store before leaving.
