Display brightness (darkness)

I recognized that the brightness-slider in min. position doesn't really adjust the possible min. brightness the displays backlight-controller could do (~10%). Every 3rd party tool or as example VLC is able to go lower, but only temporarily as the setting will be overwritten again immediatelly.
The reason why I'm starting this thread: At normal daylight the actual min. setting is good, but at night it is much too bright!
So why does Sony restrict to use the darkest setting  - it only would have advantages: Less eye pain, less battery drain.

I came here for a similar solution.
On the Galaxy Tab 2 that I had before the Sony, it was possible to set the brightness really low... that extended the battery life! It could run for an extra 4 hours, even playing games like 'Hay day' continously.
The brightness is way too high, to really enjoy watching the screen, so I do want to lower it... but how can this be done?
Why isn't there an option to set it at the desired brightness level?
I think this calls for an update!

  • Display quite dark after some seconds and stays da...

The display gets quite dark after some time (10 seconds?),
eg. during internet surfing or email checking, even if the light sensor is in MAX position. Also removing the hand or the fingers away from the screen (light sensor coverage) the display stays too dark....until I close this app (with the function key), the display gets bright again, unfortunately the app (eg. internet) then is closed :-(

But there I can't make any changes. If I do so, it changes the profile to "own settings" automatically. But I wannne keep the "normal" and "higher perfomance" settings.
And by the way; I can't change the time, the display shades. Only if it does or not. "Lower monitor brightness automatically befor go to standby", and if I would disable it, I would change the profile as written above - and that's not what I want.

  • Display too dark to use

I got a new MacBook Pro several days ago (Dual Core Intel 2.0 GHz CPU, 2 GB RAM, 100 GB HDD, etc). Everything has been working perfectly (aside from a faulty power adapter that I replaced at the local Apple retail store) up to this morning. When I got up today and went to turn the MacBook on, the display has now somehow turned itself down to minimum brightness (or otherwise failed) and now the display is dark to the point of being unusable.
I have tried using the function keys to change the brightness, I have connected an external LCD display (which works perfectly) so I can see the OS and change the brightness. The OS tells me I have maximum brightness, and altering the setting makes no difference. I have reset the PMU by removing battery and power adapter, then holding down the power button for 5 seconds, etc ... but still no joy.
I know the display is working, as I can actually see the GUI very, very faintly ... but it is so dark that it is unusable. Has anyone else encountered this before?

  • I tried to close Voiceover, then the display became dark. I can t see anything. What can I do?                                     ng. The voiceover still works. You can help me? Siggy from Germany.

I tried to close Voiceover at iPod touch 4G, the display became dark, the Voiceobver still is talking, the battery is loaded. What can I do get brightness back? Siggy from Germany.

You will also notice that your shift key will be emulated. Meaning that keys you will try to press will press but they will act like you are pressing the shift key when you are doing them.
Try this, minimize the firefox window by pressing the tab on your taskbar. After doing that maximize it again. You will magically be able to click any link on your page. When you navigate to a new page however, the entire situation will start all over. My only remedy is rebooting and hoping it doesn't happen again soon.

  • Stuck display brightness

    Hello,
Automatic display brightness adjusting on my mid-2010 13" MacBook Pro somehow gets stuck. For example, when I work in bright room and put the computer to sleep (close the lid) the brightness level remains high when I wake the computer in darker ambience. The same happens in opposite direction, when the computer goes to sleep in darker room and wake in brighter, the screen brightness remains at low settings. Is there a way to reset the system to default brightness settings? I was satisfied with default behavior of automatic illumination and all these problems arise after I manually adjusted brightness using F1-F2 keys. Otherwise, illumination adjustments work when I cover the sensor. I can notice screen going darker or lighter when room lighting conditions change.
I tried resetting SMC, but it didn't fix the problem. Do you have any suggestions?

  • Display brightness halflife?

My last DVI display got progressively dimmer over the years until I couldn't hardly see it in a well-lit room. This turns out to be caused by the "backlight halflife", which I guess is a result of the laws of the universe. Is my new Thunderbolt display subject to the same law of a backlight halflife? I am wondering if I can leave the display on indefinitely or if I should preserve its life expectancy with Energy Saver. I had heard at some point that LED technology did not need a backlight and so would not suffer the dimming halflife. Is the Thunderbolt LED or LCD? Does anyone have the full story?

that's not display brightness, that's your backlit keyboard

  • X6 Discussions - Display Brightness

    Hi All,
This is my first post and I have several questions about my X6-00 but I'll try the following for starters.
If anyone can shed some light on these two points I'd be grateful:
    1.   The X6 manual refers to the light sensor (near the speaker)  and I have found the sensor control option.  The control allows me to adjust the display brightness but despite my trials I cannot get the phone to respond to the ambient light levels.  For example it is not convenient to go through the menu options to adjust the settings just because I have walked from a bright daytime street into a dark pub.
    2.  In Ovi Maps, under the Navigation Settings menu, there is a 'Backlight' option with three choices - 'Always on', Optimised and 'System Default'.  could anyone explain these for me.
I'm sure I've missed a basic point somewhere and would like to know if there's any more detailed/technical user guide or descrption apart from the standard 'Nokia_X6-00_UG_en.pdf' (which I'd like to install but can'tbecause I don't have a PDF viewer installed - any suggestions about one to try?).
    Thanks for reading this,
    Astarte1

  • MSI GX710 display too dark - defective cable?

    Hi there.
Since nearly 2 and a half year I have been the owner of a MSI GX710 notebook. Until yesterday I was quite satisfied with it. However now I can't see anything on my display. If I look very closely I can see (or better guess) silhouettes of windows and contrasts like black and white, but apart from that the display is way too dark.
I've already tried to press the buttons for adjusting brightness without any success. Same with OS-adjustments.
I'm running a dualboot Fedora 11 (32-bit) and Win 7 (64-bit), but the OS doesn't matter, because in any of them the display is dark.
At the moment I'm running it with an external monitor, which works fine but isn't a possibility for longer.
On the external monitor I see everything and can work without any problems, so I guess it's not the graphicscard. Maybe the monitor-cable has some sort of defective contact? Since the guarantee  has been over  I've already tried to open the case, but got stuck, because of some screws I can't find. Does anyone has successfully opened the notebook?
Has anyone ever encountered such a problem (or even solved)?
    Facts:
    MSI Gx710 (MS 171-A)
    AMD Turion X2 TL-64
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 (512mb)
    BIOS Version      A171AAMS V1.0G

Contact MSI, it's not normal for that to happen after two and a half years.
You never know, they might take it for repairs or even for a small fee.

  • Nokia X6 Display brightness in sunlight

    Hi
Probably a daft question but has the display brightness in sunlight been reduced with the v30. and v31. firmware updates?
I have this impression but then I am not 100% sure, I have bought my mobile in December and we haven't had many sunny days since.
Could anyone else confirm or disagree?
    Thanks

After looking at an X6 on v31 and another on an earlier firmware I couldn't see any major difference in screen brightness.
Like many touch phones from last year the X6 just isn't that good in bright sunlight. I recommend you use a light coloured theme as it will make viewing outdoors significantly easier than when using a dark theme.

  • TS1587 I tried everything, except for reinstalling the SO-DIMM memory modules. Still, my iMac will not wake up. Turning it on you can hear the fan run, but the display stays dark. Any ideas what to do? Thanks Maja

My iMac won't start up, or wake from sleep.  I've tried everything, except for reinstalling the SO-DIMM memory modules. Still, my iMac will not wake up.  Turning it on, you can hear the fan run, but the display stays dark.  Any ideas what to do?  Thanks!

    Mac doesn't boot
Can you hear the fans and hard drive and see the white boot screen? Flashing question mark? The circle just runs and nothing happens? Only black screen and nothing else? These can be very helpful to diagnose the source of the problem. [1]
Flashing question mark [2]: This is usually a sign of a failed hard drive. This indicates that boot up volume can not be found.
Black screen: This is usually a sign of a failed logic board. There is no single reason for this and this may be caused by failed GPU, screen, CPU or RAM.
Circle of death/no circle/blue screen: This is usually a sign of a hard drive failure. This may NOT be a dead hard drive, just broken permissions or something
Gray screen/Apple logo/spinning gear or globe/prohibitory sign/folder with flashing question mark [3]: This could be a sign of faulty hardware but more likely a software issue, i.e. broken permissions, failed software update, etc.
    [edit]
    What to do
First, hold down the option key (also known as the alt key) just after you've pressed the power button. This should show all the available options to boot from, so if you have Windows installed through Bootcamp or a disk in your SuperDrive, you should be able to see them along with your OS X drive/partition. Select the OS X partition with arrow keys and press enter. Startup key combinations
If that doesn't help continue doing the steps from below:
    1. SMC reset [4]. Shut down and unplug all cables including power cord for at least 30 seconds and then plug in power cord and keyboard/mouse.
    2. PRAM reset [5]. Hold down option, command, P and R while booting. Start it when you hear the sound and don't let go before it reboots.
    3. Safe boot [6]. Hold down shift while booting to boot into safe mode. If this works, open Disk Utility from Utilities and repair your permissions and verify the disk
    4. Hardware test [7]. Insert the install disk (disk 1 in Mac which shipped with OS X 10.5.4 or earlier, disk 2 if shipped with OS X 10.5.5 or newer) and hold down "D" before the grey boot screen opens. Follow on screen instructions
    5. Boot from install disk. Boot from the disk that came with your Mac. Hold C while booting. Select Disk Utility from top bar and repair permissions and verify the disk. Reboot normally and see if it works now.
    6. Boot from another Mac (Firewire target disk mode). Connect the machines with a Firewire cable. Power on your Mac and press T. Select the other Mac's hard drive. Download the current OS X combo update. Run the combo update installer and select the drive that won't boot as the destination.
    7. "Repair" OS X. Boot from the install disk as in point 5. and reinstall OS X. This should NOT erase any data, just replaces the system files which may have caused your booting problem. Now install the latest combo update for OS X and repair permissions on your drive with Disk Utility.
7.1. Install OS X into an external hard drive and then boot from it [8] and try to copy your data from the hard drive before proceeding. If you have done a backup recently, you don't have to do this.
    8. Restore OS X from Time Machine backup. Boot from the disk that came with your Mac and choose the Time Machine restore option. This step will lose any changes made since your last backup but the system and your data will be put back to exactly as it was on that date.
8.1 Reinstall OS X. Boot from the install disk as in point 5. and select Disk Utility again. Now erase the whole hard drive and install OS X again. If you had a Time Machine backup and step 7 worked you don't have to do this.

  • The display brightness on my macbook pro is not working

I just bought a macbook pro in June and the display brightness keys are not working, nor is there a scale I can find in the system preferences to adjust the lighting level across the screen. Why is that and how do I fix it?

Go to System Preferences>Displays. You can adjust brightness there. Also make sure that the "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as function keys" are unchecked in the Keyboard preferences.

  • Dimming Display Brightness to Zero

    Hello All,
I have been having a problem with the display brightness adjustment for a long time. Basically, the display of my 17" 1GHz G4 cannot be dimmed to black. From the System Preferences the display brightness can be lowered with the slider. In the final third however dragging the slider further to the left not only does not reduce the brightness it actually slightly increase it, and the display start to flicker.
Any ideas what could be the cause?

That model doesn't support dimming the display brightness to zero, except through Energy Saver (which may not work with all third party USB devices), or a screen saver that has a picture that shows nothing but black. Some third party hacks dim the display, but they are not necessarily that reliable.
Only Apple's notebook displays dim to full black.

  • Toshiba LCD 46G310U display goes dark

I have a Toshiba 46" LCD model: 46G310U that when first plugged up has a perfect picture on all inputs. However after a few seconds to a few minutes the display goes dark with a horizontal line across the screen about half way down. The horizontal line will fade out after 25-30 seconds leaving the screen dark(back lights still works). I have replaced the inverter board, the T-Con Board, replaced most of the larger capacitors on the power board, I have even replaced the cables that connects the T-Con board to the main board. If I unplug the tv and leave it unplugged for several minutes when I turn the tv back on, the picture is back and purfect for the first few seconds or up to a couple of minutes, then the screen goes black again. Please any help would be apprecieated. Thanks.

You may want to find an authorized service provide to repair the TV.
