Display brightness setting doesn't stick on power cycle

The display brightness setting doesn't seem to stick during power cycles on my new 13" i7, it almost always sets itself to full brightness when I turn it on. This isn't really a huge deal but it is kind of a nuisance as I typically keep it around half, why should I be turning it back down every time I boot up???.
I have un-checked the box through settings for adjusting brightness based on ambient light, and made sure it is in fact staying un-checked.
I have also reset PRAM a few times now which seems to provide a temporary fix only. After a day or two it's back to square one again.
Any ideas, or is this a bug that there's currently no fix for?

Hi, I have recently bought GE60-0ND notebook with Win8 preinstalled which I got rid of in a second I got home, reinstalled with my licensed Win7. Half of things didn't work so I flashed the correct firmware. From that point on everything works perfectly, only brightness control is broken. I simply cannot control my monitor's brightness with my special keys nor in power control setup. So I googled.. and some smart guy recommended a bios flash as well. But when I try, it says either "Problem getting flash information" or "Problem getting bios information".
Any thoughts how to get the brightness control work?
Thanks for any kind of advice
Did you switch the BIOS and the EC Firmware to the Windows 7 counterparts?
You may want to ask Svet about that error.

  • (SOLVED) Display brightness disappeared from Power Options in Vista, Lenovo G530

    Hello board,
My system Lenovo G530 product ID 444638U
I used to be able to adjust display brightness in Vista from Control Panel > Power Options. I could set how bright when on battery and how bright when on AC. Also, it used to be that when I unplugged power cable it would automatically adjust my brightness according to those settings. Now, nothing happens when I unplug power cable, not even a beep.
Possible problem is as follows, but let's keep an open mind to other things as well. I spilled beer on keyboard recently. ONLY on keyboard I am sure. I replaced keyboard with something that fits but something that isn't made for my laptop, has different arrangement of Fn+ keys. Basically ever since the beer accident and ever since I replaced keyboard I had this brightness issue.
    Please help me solve this.

    I solved this problem..
Solution is to upgrade the BIOS to latest version. I am not sure actually whether latest BIOS had the needed fix or not, or it was just the process of updating the BIOS that solved this issue.  But no doubt, after flashing the BIOS, display brightness function reappeared!

  • Quicktime 7.13 Flash Setting won't stick

OK,I got no answers posting in the OS X Server page,
so I'd thought I'd post this here in QT to see if
    anyone has dealt with this?
    so here is the scenario:
Quicktime 7.13's "enable flash" checkbox bug
caused all of our elem grade Flash based software
    to stop working properly.
I went into the Admin account on one of 80 macs
managed by OD. I set the QT prefs to have the
checkbox enabled, and then closed out of the
Quicktime Prefs pane. I then went and made a copy of
that QT Prefs file, and copied down into
    System/Library/User Template/English.local/Library/Prefs/
making sure to change back from admin to system before closing out
the Info panel, and then rebooted the machine.
Logged in as a newly created user, and the pref does stick.
But log in as a legacy OD user, and the pref does not stick,
    it shows to be disabled.
What should I try next to get this pref to stick for all OD users
    when they log in?
All Macs run 10.4.8, QT 7.13.
    Server is OSX Tiger Server.

Had this happen on a colleague's iMac at work. Clicked Enable Flash checkbox - quit Quicktime - preference doesn't save.
This is on a normal one user account Mac on a network - is it the same bug and will your solution fix it?
    Thanks
    Greg
    Answered my own question.
Here are the steps to fix this issue:
#1. Go log into the SERVER as admin.
#2. Set the "Enable Flash" setting in QT PREF Pane,
close out of the pref pane.
#3 Log out a admin, log back in as admin.
#4 Make a copy of the admin's QT prefs, place on
    desktop.
    #5 Go into System/Library/Usr
    Templates/English.lproj/Library/Prefernces/
ON THE SERVER, and copy into the Preferences folder
    that copy of
the admin's QT Prefs you placed on the desktop
    earlier.
#6 Close out all windows, making sure to reset all
    prefs on files
    and folders to system ownership.
Go to a client and test. If the setting doesn't stick
    on the managed
    user account, then:
#1 Login to the machine as admin.
#2 Search for Managed Accounts folder, trash all
    contents of this folder.
#3 empty trash, then logout as admin
#4 log in as managed user account. Should apply now.

  • MacBook Pro 5.1; varying display brightness

MacBook Pro 5.1; display brightness slowly increases then decreases in a cycle of about 2 minutes.  Not a big difference but noticeable.  Any hints?

Apparently the display is working, but its backlight isn't on. First make sure it isn't turned all the way down: press the F2 key to turn the brightness up. If it doesn't brighten up when you do that, something has been damaged and will need to be repaired. If wine was spilled on the screen and ran down into the plastic hinge housing and the base of the screen assembly, it may have shorted out the LEDs that provide the backlighting. Your machine is out of warranty, and if you had AppleCare, the spill has voided it. The Apple remedy will be to replace the entire screen assembly, and possibly also the top case and logic board, depending on how far inside the wine got. So you may want to look for an independent third-party repair service that can fix it with used parts, or you may want to do the repair work yourself with used parts and the well-illustrated take-apart instructions at iFixit. com:

  • Power Manager resets Display Brightness (T 410)

Has anyone experienced an issues with power manager where the following occurs? I have power manager set so on battery my display brightness is 10 and on AC the brightness is 15. If I restart Windows 7 and am on battery power, the AC setting resets to 10 and must be manually reset once I plug in the power cord. I am running windows 7 64 (not the Lenovo build) but have used system update and am currently up to date with no problems listed in device manager. Any ideas.
    Thanks.

  • Thinkpad X201 & KDE: KDE doesn't get info on display brightness

In KDE, I can adjust my screen brightness with both the Fn-{Home,End} keys, and with Battery Monitor widget. Both methods work normally.
However, these methods work independent of each other: if the Battery Monitor shows 100% screen brightness and I turn the brightness down to 0% with the keys, the widget will not display it, and KDE still thinks brightness is at 100%.
To show what I mean: this picture shows the HUD displaying the brightness level at 100%, but after I set my brightness with the Fn-keys, it will still display 100%:
Is there a way to make KDE detect the level of screen brightness set with the Fn-keys?

    Same problem here.
That used to work for me in earlier times (~2 month ago). But I'm not sure wheter this has changed by updating kde or updating other stuff (I tend to belive the latter).

  • Prevent x-server setting display brightness

    Hi,
i have a laptop with a ati radeon hd 4200 and i'm using the catalyst driver. I have also laptop-mode-tools installed to adjust the display brightness which works fine but every time the x-server is started the brightness is set to 100% so the brighness adjustment of laptop-mode-tools is quite useless, because it is set before the x-server is started.
My question is, is there a way to prevent the x-server setting the display brightness?

I have neither gnome nor another DE installed, just X with dwm. It seems that the brightness is set by X. The workaround i am using now is
    if [ "$(< /sys/devices/platform/smapi/ac_connected)" = 0 ]; then
    xbacklight -set 17%
    else
    xbacklight -set 40%

  • Problem with brightness setting?

Every 10-15min or so my display goes dim for power saver mode but I can't seem to extent the time that the display goes on power save. I went to my system preferences and I have the display settings set at 30min before going dim.
How do I change these dim settings?
The display doesn't go to sleep it just reduces in brightness.

In as much as this is basically a hardware issue check into the MacBook Computer Hardware forum area here:

  • Brightness setting changes everytime I turn on my powerbook.

Everytime I turn on my powerbook the brightness setting is at a different level. Sometimes it is all the to the dimmest setting and I can't even locate my pointer because my screen is so dark. Is there a way to keep the brightness setting from changes levels?

I have a brand new macbook that is having this problem, and I already have the display setting with the brightness slider all the way to the right, so that's not the problem. This machine is a replacement for an early macbook that went through too many repairs and finally got replaced. I never had this problem on the old one, so I'm baffled. I have installed all updates and I have my settings all the same as on the old machine, so I can't figure out why it's behaving this way. It doesn't happen every time the machine sleeps or restarts, but sometimes when I come back to the machine, I find the brightness is turned all the way down and I have to turn it back up.

  • Can't disable auto screen brightness on M92z even after using power manager

I find the auto screen brightness annoying and have been trying to disable it.  When I go into power manager and turn off "auto" it works, but once I reboot, it's back on again.
I've gone into the sensor section of power manager and disabled the sensor but that too does not stick.  I've also checked that "magic brightness" setting as well.  Nothing seems to stick after a reboot.  Things work until I reboot.
I have installed the latest power manager, but 2 things seem strange.  website says latest version is 3.40.0002 but when download and install that version it reports 3.40.0001 (notice the 1 vs the 2).  Also in control panel it says power manager 32 bit but my OS is Windows 7 64 bit.

Alright, so this is ridiculous. Back to square one with nothing booting. I managed to get it booted up once fully, and another time booted off the OS10.3 disc (froze during disk repair in Disk Utility).
I don't have another hard drive to try, and I've taken it apart and reset everything.
    Any ideas?

  • Kernel 2.6.27 update, laptop display brightness problem.

After the update to kernel 2.6.27 the display brightness resets to the highest level during the system startup. It resets to highest value somewhere during the udev processing. There is obviously some difference with display brightness handling because now I have in GNOME display of brightness level while changing (something like volume changing with multimedia keys). The brightness also resets to highest randomly while working in GNOME so I need to adjust it sveral times.
My laptop is HP nx7400. I have Arch64 installed. Also the problem appears on my brother's HP nx7300, almost same hardware.

    Hi peart.
I am not kernel programmer, but I have analyzed the code of the ACPI video driver and the problematic patch. I have removed the check which sets the brightness to max but I can't compile because of not enough space to compile the kernel :S. Would you be so kind to compile the modified file and upload a compiled moduel to test.
I have following explanation for my modification:
Here http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/g … 29c1ba8055 we can see that there is added check if ACPI BQC object exists. If the object doesn't exist then the brightness is set to max, which obviously is the problem with our laptops because the BQC object is optional. If we revert the patch completly the BCQ check is moved to the outter if-structure and the execution skips whole part, where the backlight device is registered.
My modification is that I removed the check for BCQ object and removed the part where it sets the backlight to max. As far as I can see acpi_video_get_brightness(device->backlight) can be called without prior checking of BCQ object existance, because acpi_video_get_brightness then calls acpi_video_device_lcd_get_level_current which gets the current brightness level. acpi_video_device_lcd_get_level_current checks if BCQ object exists and handles it properly, as far as I can see.

  • IMac 20" making noise related to the brightness setting

    Hi guys,
I just bought my imac 2 days ago and it has started to make noise on the night i bought it. But i figured out by tilting the mac forward for few seconds make it disappear.
Then i found out from the forum that it was the inverter and can be reduced by setting the brightness level which works in my case.
Just wondering should i concern about it and send it back to the store to get it fixed or just bear with it and solve the minor problems myself by tilting and making it goes max on the brightness setting?
Note: i found that it goes off after few minutes. Maybe it only happens at start up..
I just dont want to see this new IMac goes into surgery so soon...
    "sigh"..

As a former authorized Apple service tech I agree with your findings. Thirty days ago I bought a 20" iMac (Early 2008) and the buzzing occurs when the iMac is 'cold' (ie: has been off for several hours and doing a cold bootup). Once booted up (to the login screen will do), use the F1 key to drop screen brightness a few notches (I go to 1/2 brightness) and there is the buzzing noise. Obvious. Simple. This noise was initially first noticed when the screen dimmed on its own when not using the iMac for 60-90 seconds or so.
... but once the iMac has been on for a while (say 10 minutes) and is 'warmed up' then I don't get the annoying buzzing noise when decreasing screen brightness.
... so I'd have to say the iMac's display inverter is needing to be replaced (unless it's integrated within the main display assembly module itself at which point the whole display panel needs swapping). Alternatively, this might be a power supply issue too although in my years as a technician any power supply issue (internal in the iMac's design) usually causes other goofy behaviour other than a screen brightness control problem.
So, Apple! You folks monitor these discussion boards. Can someone in the 'official channels' confirm/deny my findings here? Really Apple -- this issue is noted back to the 24" iMac design from 2006 so PLEASE tell us users that you DO have a permanent fix to this and it's being implemented at the production build level!!

  • Display sleeps but doesn't wake on click or tab

    Hi,
I have a Mac Mini(mid 2011) with came with Lion. I just upgraded to 10.7.2 and since then there is an issue with the sleep function.
I have not put the mini to sleeep as i keep downloading large files or converting movies but the DISPLAY is set to sleep in 10 mins.
IT was all fine but ever since the update, the display doesn't wake up once it goes to sleep. Even though i click the mouse or press keys on keyboard.
A black screen prevails on the screen and the viable option left is to cut the power off and restart to access the screen. It is seriously hampering my ongoing tasks as they are closed abruptly.
For the time being i have set the display to never sleep. But i am looking for a solution.  Has anyone else also faced the issue after an the update. Any suggesstions would be highly appreciated.
