Display Calibration Issues

hi,
just upgraded to 10.6.8 and lots of issues.
the biggest is that my 30" cinema display now looks 15-20% lighter.
the screen image (especially in abobe indesign) doesn't look like it did in 10.5.8
and looks lighter than my normal print output.
I've played around with display calibration, but my new settings are really different
from my original settings. and of course, now all my indesign files are out-of-sync
with the abobe color settings and need to be updated, each and every one.
I also read that the new 'target gamma' is now 2.2 for 10.6.8 (as a default), but
when calibrating in SL, isn't not default and you need to know to manually change that.
has anyone else experienced these kind of SL display problems?
if so, how did you correct them?
in the back of my mind I'm thinking it's something with the video card, but
I'll try anything short of messing with that.
bottom line: all was well in 10.5.8.
now with 10.6.8, I've got issues that need to be fixed asap.

my suspicion is snow leopard.
Nope, color works just fine. Something has changed in your setup. If you're using the exact same monitor and printer profiles you had under 10.5.8, color should come out the same under Snow Leopard.
While the default for Snow Leopard is now a 2.2 gamma, it doesn't mean you can't change it. It only means the long supplied Apple profiles are now built with a 2.2 gamma instead of 1.8. You can still build your monitor profiles to any white point and gamma you want.
Color matching is actually much simpler than it sounds. Though I should say the concept is simple. ColorSync is what controls color between devices. If you're trying to match your print to the monitor, ColorSync reads the monitor profile's color space. It does the best it can to make it fit and translate to the printer profile's color space.
That's the simple explanation. But in order for that to work, you need accurate profiles. You'll go through an awful lot of paper and ink trying one unrelated profile after another, and still get nowhere. By "unrelated", I mean using a profile that has nothing to do with the device. Such as choosing "Adobe RGB" as your monitor profile. That profile means nothing in relation to your monitor. It does not describe the white point, gamma or brightness you monitor is necessarily set to, nor the gamut or range of color it can actually display. Same goes for the rest of any profile the system allows you to choose as your monitor profile. They are all generic profiles that in no way describe the device you are looking at. I go into a lot more detail on monitors here.
So when you do use one of those generic monitor profiles, ColorSync can only assume, yes, this must be exactly how the monitor looks that you're viewing. Which of course it doesn't. So naturally, printed color is rarely even close.
The least expensive color management tool you can buy, and at the same time drastically improves your ability to match output to your screen is something like this. Of the two models, definitely get the i1Display Pro. Much faster, accurate unit. Also much better software with more control. Don't bother looking at older colorimeters such the i1Display2, Spyder, or any other previous models. They can't handle the output of today's wide gamut LCD or LED monitors. Gray rarely comes out gray. Usually very greenish or pink. These new models have bee completely redesigned to handle today's monitors. They also handle older monitors just fine.

  • Display Calibration Issue/SwitchResX Tutorial?

I'm connecting my MacMini to a NEC PX-50 plasma over DVI, and have a flickering 1/2 inch border around three sides of the screen. I had this with 10.5 - heard it might be fixed with Snow Leopard so I upgraded - same problem.
Is this the kind of issue that something like SwitchRes X can fix?
If so, can someone offer me a easy to follow tutorial for it? I downloaded it but frankly, a newbie like me finds this program rather daunting. I get the feeling I could make things a lot worse rather than better!
Is DisplayConfigX easier to use? I read it wasn't supported on SL?
PS my monitor is fine with all my other inputs - satellite receiver, DVD player, AppleTV etc so pretty clear that the issue is the Mac.
    Thanks.

I was able to download SwitchResX Control, which was a little stand alone free app by the same developer. It is much simpler to use, but he took it down so it is no longer available. I am sure that he feels really burned by all the folks here in the Mac mini discussions who download SwitchResX (SRX) because it is fully functioning shareware, use it to fix their issue, toss it and never send him a dime.
Anyway, I think SRX works very similarly to the freebie, just more complicated. However, before you do anything, make sure that you do not leave yourself blind. Sometimes just choosing one of the resolutions in System Prefs>Displays can leave you with invalid signal flashing around a black screen and no way to see to change it back! So make sure that you have enabled screen sharing on your mini and can use one of your other Macs/iPhone to access the mini in case of mishap. I speak as one who choose the wrong resolution and who had not enabled screen sharing on my Mac mini.
As I understand the process, you should be able to export an EDID as a text file to your Desktop from SRX. You can look over this text file with TextEdit. From the information in the EDID, you can garner the info for the best resolutions for your display and then use that to create a custom resolution with SRX and save it. After a restart it should be active and available as a choice in Sys Prefs>Displays.

  • Contrast/brightness calibration issue

    Hello
I have an Apple Studio Display 17-inch CRT with a VGA connection to a recently installed Radeon 9800; and before that an ATI Rage 128. For a long time now I have not been able to calibrate contrast or brightness in Display Calibration Assistant. Basically, the window with the brightness oval in it doesn't respond to increases or decreases in contrast or brightness. Native Gamma, Target Gamma, and Target White Point all respond normally.
I have tried cleaning the AGP Slot on the mother board, and the AGP connectors on the 9800. I've also tried repairing permissions, and profile first aid. So is this a software issue, or hardware issue; and is it repairable?
    I do run OS 10.4.11 on a G4 Sawtooth with 2GB Ram, and a 1.8GHz dual CPU.

I'm not an expert on monitors, but I do know tubes and that, from your description, is what you have, a CRT. If the monitor is years old then the cathode may be losing its ability to emit electrons. This will cause problems trying to get the responses you need. It's akin to old people like me just wearing out. You can increase the emissions by raising the filament voltage like they used to in the old days when tv's cost several weeks of gross pay, but that just accelerates the inevitable. Replacing the cathode is technologically possible, but economically the cost would scare you to death.

  • Display Calibrator Assistant: Too Blue?

Just brought home my third MBP, after swapping the second for the vertical lines issue.
I'm attempting to calibrate the display, but I'm running into problems with the Display Calibrator Assistant.
In Expert Mode, the luminance boxes don't give me enough adjustability to gray the image. The brightness box (left) is fine, but the color box (right) only has shades of blue. The bottom of the box is still slightly blue, and there's never a point at which it adjusts into yellow.
Net result, any Expert Mode calibration comes out overly blue-tinted. Non-Expert Mode is actually more accurate, just setting the native calibration to 2.2 gamma.
I'm pretty sure this isn't just perception. I kept a grayscale up, and you could see some blocks were yellow and some were blue, because the adjustability wasn't there to smooth the color curve properly across all the various luminances.
Anyone seen this? Anyone know a way around it, or an alternate (free) ICS creator? I'm not going to spring for a Spyder3, but I get a little concerned when the hardware doesn't work with the software--seems like in Apple's world, that means something might be out of whack.

Yeah, I'm aware of the danger here, but I'm pretty sure this isn't falling under perception. The range on the color side of the calibrator goes from extremely blue to just a little blue. The laptop itself is producing much warmer grays outside the calibrator, just not inside it. My desktop screen is also calibrator (Windows, using Adobe Gamma), so I have an independent reference point.
If I crank the right side of the calibrator down to "just a little blue" at each luminance level (which is the closest I can get the apple to match, even though it's still bluer than the background), I can see the problem in the ICS file.
The color curves on the resultant profile show dips for the other colors, and a straight diagonal line for blue. This corresponds with an extreme amount of blue push in the display, where the other colors are dropped out in the midranges and blue is not.
In other words, this doesn't come down to a "by-eye" thing. The calibrator itself does not have enough adjustability to make the foreground apple match the background target.

  • How best to calibrate monitor using Display Calibrator Assistant?

I have had my 20" iMac since January 2007, but have not yet calibrated the monitor which I understand is a good thing to do periodically. I would like to do this using the Display Calibrator Assistant available via Mac System Preferences.
My Internet research on this subject has uncovered some controversy on how to perform the calibration. For example, a preponderance of opinion seems to be that the Gamma setting should be 2.2 instead of the 1.8 recommended by Apple for Mac OS computers. There are also differing opinions on whether to use the Expert Mode when calibrating.
I would appreciate an authoritative response on how best to perform the monitor calibration. For your information my primary interest regarding calibration is making sure that colors are correct when I am viewing and editing photographic digital images that I store in iPhoto.

    Hey, Pete!
With my Nikon I can set the color space to either Adobe RGB or sRGB. Ken Rockwell (kenrockwell.com) is very knowledgeable in this area, and in his User's Guide for the D200, strongly advises the default sRGB setting unless the user really knows what he is doing with Adobe RGB and does his own printing. I don't agree with all of Mr. Rockwell's pronouncements, but on this issue I opted to follow his advice.
I don't find noise to be a significant issue with the D200 from ISO 100 through 1600.  Noise gets pretty bad at ISO 3200, but the Noise Ninja program is very helpful in reducing noise to acceptable levels. Noise is worse in underexposed areas, but on balance I still prefer underexposure--within reason--to overexposure.
I started out my use of the D200 shooting everything in RAW + JPEG (Large Normal Optimal Quality), but in most instances I didn't feel that RAW gave me noticeably better results than JPEG. Also, RAW images chew up a lot of hard drive space. I now shoot most stuff JPEG, but employ RAW in situations that might present a problem, like when shooting sporting events in school gymnasiums which typically have abominable lighting conditions. With RAW images white balance is easier to adjust than with JPEGs. On the Internet I have read a number of impassioned arguments in favor of RAW over JPEG, but I still consider RAW to be a digital image format and not a religion! Therefore, I don't fear consignment to hades as a penalty for shooting JPEGs!

  • Mac Pro (Early 2008) and HP LP3065 30" display compatibility issue

    Hello!
Is there FIX / Workaround to Mac Pro (Early 2008) and HP LP3065 30" display compatibility issue ? ( +w/ ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT display adapter+ ). Its really annoying problem :-/.
Main problem is when i start my Mac, my 30" HP screen dosen't wake up, it always on suspend mode. Sometimes it wakes up on the 3rd try orso, sometimes it ruins my motivation, ideas and i give up (talk about inspiration killer). If i connect PC Laptop to that screen, sreen wakes up straight away. ATI says display adapters "drivers" are included on the OSX install. Great. Weird thing is i didn't recognize this problem at all 6-8 months ago, so i thought my system is fine. So i can't return my HP screen anymore.
    My choices are to buy another 30" screen or buy different display adapter; there's two choices atm i think;
*-ATI Radeon HD 3870 512MB PCI-E for Mac Pro (~200€)*
*-EVGA GeForce GTX 285 Mac Edition 1GB (~500€)* (this one has seperate OSX drivers).
_Can anyone confirm if those display adapters work with HP 3065 30" screen ?._

Thanks for all information. I haven't been Mac user very long . I just want to get rid of my annoying problem. I'll do music composing mainly on my Mac Pro. So, it dosen't really matter what display card i'm using, i want to just make sure it works with HP 3065 .

  • Brand New MacBook Pro and Display Adaptor Issue

Hello fellow Mac users, I've been a long-time Mac user and owner.
I just got a new MacBook Pro after using a 2006 model for 2 years and am having a display adapter issue that I need help and advice with:
The new MacBook Pro has the mini DVI display connector, my non-Apple external display is does not support the mini DVI, no problem there, I bought the display adaptor...
Except that it doesn't fit the adaptor that fit the 2006 MacBook Pro.
    Please See Image at Link:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/sdjOcw1jrddqtAfjAU0Trw?feat=directlink
File comment: This is the adaptor that connected my 2006 MacBook Pro to the the display. It changes the connection from the Mac's DVI to fit the VGA connection of my display. There are the four extra pins around the flat pin to the left of the connector.
Somehow the male end of the mini DVI to the full-size DVI adaptor doesn't fit the female end of the full-size DVI to VGA adaptor! Please see the images. It seems a few extra pins prevent the connection!
    Please See Image at Link:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/4bG788QVKGCOIJUkzHcjKg?feat=directlink
Comment: This is where the problems begin. The flat portion lacks the four holes needed for the DVI to VGA adaptor to connect.
Is it possible to just remove the four offending pins in the Full Size DVI to VGA Male End?
Any help or suggestions highly appreciated, because as of now, my brand new MacBook Pro is less useful than the 2006 model, which can connect to my external display.
Thanks a lot for your help!

Hi Rob with a Mac and welcome to the boards.
My suggestion would be that you simply take the adaptor back and get a mini-display port to VGA adaptor instead.
I ran into a similar problem myself recently when I wanted to connect my own MBP13 to an overhead projector. I had assumed that I could use the mini display to DVI adaptor that I use for the DVI capable external monitor with my new MacBook, combined with a DVI to VGA adaptor that I had for my 2007 MBP, connected to a VGA cable to do the job, but this is not possible.
MiniDisplay to VGA adaptors for the newer MBPs are readily available at Apple dealers or through the online store and not too expensive.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Share same display calibration

I just got two Dell LCD monitors and I calibrated one of them using Apple's display calibration and saved it. For some reason the calibration doesn't show up in the other displays lists of choices. How can I get it to share the exact same calibration?

Have you tried restarting then trying again?

  • Thunderbolt display calibration factory profile not found

Hi, I have recently got a Thunderbolt display (attached to Mac Mini) and have opened the 'Thunderbolt Display' preferences tab and have noticed that under 'color' the setting was 'sRGB IE61966-2.1' rather than 'Display' or 'Thunderbolt Display' - is this normal and if not what should the default be?
Also when I hit the 'calibrate...' button 'Display Calibrator' states that 'The Factory profile for the display could not be found' and when I enter 'ColorSync Utility' it states that:
    /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays/Display-756E6B6E-7669-7274-0000-000041DC9D0 1.icc
Tag 'cprt': Text tag has an incorrect length.
The file is locked. Could not be fixed.
When I go to the folder and try to unlock the file by going to 'Get Info' it doesn't state that the file is locked.
I also have Adobe CS5.5 installed so maybe that's installed some different ICC profiles?
Help please community, I'm pretty much a noob to this.
    Thanks

Don't feel bad. You are certainly not the first person to make that mistake and it is equally certain you will not be the last.

  • HP TX2000 Pen Calibration Issue(s)

I have an HP tx2000. I reinstalled windows and then I went to calibrate the pen digitizer thing (for portrait) and in the middle of calibration a window poped up. I couldn't close the window with the pen because it wasn't calibrated properly. So, I rotated the screen to the regular landscape view and closed the window. Well, no matter what I tried, I couldn't get back to the calibration. So, I shutdown the computer and tried to calibrate it again, but it wouldn't let me. Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this calibration issue? Thank you very much for your help.

There are more than 1000 entries in google under "hp pavilion tablet driver"each asking for the driver.
More than 300 visitor read your post.
    No one answered at all.
Do you think is your fault, or maybe HP and Wacom are too busy to deal with this issue.
Until this issue stays under, lets say, 500 readings, you'll get no answer.
Maybe you thougth they will hurry up for you, and your error buying this equipment for your specific need, and  the possibility of sell it out!
It's a shame but, in this business, products go to the market before they get success on real quality tests. We, final customers, are their quality control. And these products are OK unless anyone can speak loud enough to reveal any inconvenience.
Don't wait for any answer until another user, with enough time and knowledge to get it running, falls in the same problem.
    Anyway, good luck!!
God, give me patience. But give it to me NOW!!!

  • GT72 - Dragon Gaming Centre "Instant Play" & Display Colour Calibration issue

    Hi guys,
Very much enjoying my GT72, but I've noticed a strange error that I can't seem to find the solution to either on this forum or elsewhere.
Basically the computer boots up to an incorrect colour calibration setting (really blue) which I have tried to set properly with the default windows "Calibrate Display Colour" tool. It seems to stick after doing that, but rebooting reverts it to the previous default.
I've also noticed that when pressing Fn+F4 for the Instant Play, it seems to change color display settings; if it was on the default really blue setting it'd change to my calibration, and vice versa.
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to prevent Instant Play changing calibration settings and having my calibration stick between reboots?
    Thanks in advance!

yeah.... with so much different angle and good quality, they are truly good photo shooting pieces!

  • Calibration issues with 23" display and Macbook Pro 13".

    Hi All,
I'm a photographer and link my Macbook Pro to a 23" display in order to edit my work.
I have calibrated both displays with a gretagmacbeth eye-one display 2, however, despite this, when I move images between screens they change considerably, most noticeably the values of reds. I appreciate the laptop display is never going to be as bright as the stand alone, but am I asking too much for the colours to be the same?
I look forward to receiving any suggestions from those who've had similar experience, or those who are experts in the this field.
    Thank you in advance!

    Hi!
Well for me theres 2 types of click,
    1. one when u click and sounds (this one is pressing harder the trackpad)
    2. another is softer when just need to put ur finger over the trackpad.
i use more the second one, thats why i say i rarely use the first one.
    Thanks for answering
    Regards

  • Monitor Calibration Issue?

When I'm in Develop or Print the brightness and color of a harbor that I photographed look just fine. They also look fine when I call up the printer's print preview window. However, when I print out the  photo, the blue water in the shadows takes on a greenish tint and other areas of shadow come out darker than what is shown on the screen. Could this be a monitor calibration problem?

No that is the correct profile. the SP indicates glossy photo paper. The MP
is because this is a multifunction printer. Alas this also indicates the
likely issue. The drivers for many of these cheapo printers simply do not
turn off their color management even if you tell it to do that. My guess is
that what is happening is double color management. The driver is expecting
data in sRGB and coverts that to a printer profile. However, it got data in
the profile already so it gets applied twice. This bug in the drivers only
shows up in more modern apps such as Lightroom and Photoshop CS5 as they
only use the most recent method to send data to the driver and the drivers
haven't been updated to allow the more modern method (and likely never
will). You can sometimes get these printers to print correctly by setting
the driver to expect adobeRGB or sRGB and telling Lightroom to send data in
that colorspace (select show display profiles in the other dialog and enable
those). Sometimes the sequence of when you go into the print settings dialog
matters and the driver will suddenly decide to cooperate as long as you go
by business in the exact same way every time.

  • W530 Color Calibration Issue

Every month I re-calibrate my display using the COLOR by PANTONE Color Calibrator (v1.1.0).
I tried doing it today and kept getting this error, even though the tone for successful calibration always goes off:
    Link to picture
I'll try to calibrate the screen once, but it will fail.  When I try a second time, it will also fail, and give me the error seen above.  If I try a third time, I finally get the three failure tones and the software simply closes itself.
Is this a hardware issue?  A driver issue?  Are there any solutions for this?
Recently updated my computer.  Windows 7 64-bit.

    Hi again, crmichae
What updates have you recently done to your machine? I did some research and found two highly relevant updates for your machine in general, and this issue more specifically. If you haven't already updated them, I found drivers for both your BIOS and the your graphics card that  have been released recently and are a good place to start with helping this issue. The graphics driver can be found here and the BIOS can be found here.
Hope it helps. Let me know how it goes,
    Adam
