Display coming out of sleep crashes the Mac mini

Here's the problem which has started to happen since I upgrade to Mountain Lion:
The display (HP 24" connected via the HDMI output) is set to sleep after 10 minutes. After pressing a key/touching the trackpad in order to activate it, my Mac shows a blue (cyan) screen and is stuck there. It doesn't show the desktop or the login window or the mouse pointer. After a minute the fans starts to spin up like crazy, and the only way to get it back is to either power it off/on or log in from remote via ssh and issue a reboot.
The mini is online 24/7, it's only the display that sleeps and the harddrive is set to spin down.
Coming from Linux I don't quite know how to read the top output and sort it properly on OSX, but I've installed htop and will use that the next time it happens.
When I log on to it from remote it has a load of 25, and it appears that the loginwindow process is stuck. Killing it brings the load down but doesn't bring back the desktop or the login window, and at this point it has started killing any user program I had open.
I have a Mac mini at work as well, same configuration but with two Dell 24" monitors. It doesn't appear to happen here, so I can't rule out that I got a faulty Mac (or faulty RAM).
But has anyone experienced the same problem?

Mine has been doing that as well, ever since the ML upgrade. I have to restart after I open the MBP. This morning, I took the closed MPB from my case where it had sat all night and it was very hot. Of course, on opening it, it had to be rebooted. Not cool.

  • Sleep on the mac mini late 2014 strange behaviour

    my system specs are:
    Late 2014 mac mini.
    16GB Ram
    1TB Fusion drive.
Recently I decided to completely reformat my fusion drive and pop a clean copy of yosemite on. All seems well. I have power nap enabled and wake for network access turned off.
Recently my mac has been asleep as normal and waking up for power nap activities which is all normal. I sometimes look at the white led to know its ok as it is pulsing which is good. Last night and the night before that, the while light has been pulsing and then last night I saw that it was off. I was still able to wake the computer but noticed this in the console log:

Normally and correct me if I am wrong power nap would cause the computer to wake every hour?
It doesn't explain why my mac goes into like a deep sleep but I am still able to wake it up. There is no process bar or anything to indicate that it has gone into safe sleep.
I have checked the hardware and there are no problems. Disk permissions there are no errors. everything seems ok?
I was wondering if anyone else with a mac mini late 2014 has or have been having the same problem?
    Many thanks

You asked "Normally and correct me if I am wrong power nap would cause the computer to wake every hour?"
During Power Nap normal TM backups still happen so if you have Power Nap and default TM settings, TM will still backup every hour.
Otherwise I have no info on your other problems

  • Does the miniStack Sleep With the Mac mini?

This question is for those that own a miniStack. Does the miniStack sleep when you put your Mac mini to sleep?
I just purchases a miniStack and am using it with my Powerbook. I noticed that when the miniStack is connected, the Powerbook will never go to sleep. If I choose sleep from the Apple menu, the Powerbook will go to sleep for about 2 seconds and then wake back up. It will only go to sleep if I eject the miniStack, then turn it off, and then the Powerbook will go to sleep.
I was wondering if this was the case for Mac mini users as well, or with any type of firewire drive.
Also, this might be a silly question but, If I boot from my miniStack and then eject it, what will happen?
    Thanks

Hmm my ministack transferring a 30 mb file on USB is whole lot slower than firewire. Took a second for each mb on USB but for the firewire it transfered 30mb in a snap. I don't know what could be the problem. If you do have both connections to your computer (USB & Firewire) then you probably have the drive switch to USB for the HD. Thats the only reason I could think of for the HD being slower than it should be on firewire.
There is a chance of the ministack being defective. I remember when I got the ministack. I plug it in the wall with the computer connected, didn't work. It was so strange. So I turned it back in and came back to me saying it worked for them and only then it started to work. So there might be a chance but for a problem of USB being faster than firewire is what I think is rare.

  • Display is all snow coming out of Sleep mode

Just replaced a 17" LCD (using the mini-DVI-to-VGA) with a new Acer 24" widescreen LCD (using mini-DVI-to-DVI). After a little fiddling with the profile, I've got a pretty nice picture. Problem: coming out of sleep mode, the screen is all snow. If I pop the monitor off and on, everything comes back normal. I did NOT have this problem with the older 17". This is more of an annoyance than a major issue, since just a couple of hits of the on-off button correct it. But it ain't right, so I'm hoping I can fix it for good. It happens whether the Mini goes to sleep by itself or if I put it to sleep. I don't know if it's a DVI issue, monitor issue, or something goofy with the Mini's video.
I did a search and found similar issues, but not exactly the same, and saw no suggested resolutions that fixed them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks ...
    Ed

The 9400M device driver on our Macs appears to be really bad.
My buddy tried to put a Sharp LCD projector on the external port on his Mac laptop, which also had a Nvidia 9400M, and it was not usable. The picture kept coming and going. The projector screen would go blank, then a picture would come up, go blank, and then the picture would come back again, over and over. Being an experienced Mac, PC, and Linux user, I attempted to help him get it working using the display properties page in the System Preferences. Nothing helped.
I'm having similar troubles with the second port on my 9400M on my new Mac mini.
The primary display is fine. I have a 24" Acer LCD on the miniport to DVI converter for my second display, and it works most of the time, however the picture goes to snow fairly often, and blacks out sometimes, too. It usually comes back. Occasionally, I have to power cycle the LCD to get the picture back.
Seeing similar problems with two different DVI display devices, when these devices work fine on our PCs, seems to point the problem at the Mac Nvidia display driver.

  • Cannot Connect to AE After Coming out of Sleep Mode

This happens on both my iMac and Powerbook. I don't normally use wireless on the iMac but I discovered that both computers are having the same issue when troubleshooting. When coming out of Sleep mode, the Airport device cannot connect to the Airport Express. The only thing that can consistently connect is my Blackberry.
I know it's not a reception problem as when I am able to connect, the signal is strong and speeds are very good.
Some things I have tried to fix the problem have worked but not consistently as the problem keeps happening:
-Turn Airport off and back on (On the computer)
-Unplug and plug back in the AE
    -Turn off MAC Address Filtering
    -Factory reset the Airport Express
-Select the Join Other Network option and re-enter my wpa2 credentials
    -Uncheck Closed Network option
What could be the problem? I'm really thinking there is a software bug somewhere. I have also noticed if I make any changes in the Airport Utility the AE never recovers as it stays a solid amber. I have to power cycle the device.
It's using software version 6.3 and all my OS X updates are the latest. This is very frustrating. Any help appreciated.

I have tried both remedies mentioned above. I double-checked and my network is listed in the wireless advanced settings. It's the only network in my list. Airport is at the top in my Network Preferences as well.
I was hoping the update to 10.5.8 would help but the problem keeps occurring. One thing I have tried is leaving the "Closed Network Option" unchecked for my AE. Now, I am discovering when exiting sleep mode, I see my network but when it tries to connect, I receive the error "Connection Timeout". This happens on both computers.
The only thing that works the most consistently is unplugging the AE and plugging back in. Once I'm connected, it works great.
I tried using iStumbler to see if there were any other networks using the same channel but that looks okay.
I guess I can try using a different security setting other than WPA2, but then that is not really a solution. I'm about ready to just try some other newer wireless solution. It used to work flawlessly. I think until 10.5.4, I had no issues.

  • Can you mirror a Mac Mini to an AppleTV 3 when the mac mini is not connected to a display?

Hello, I have an AppleTV 3 connected to my television and a late 2012 Mac Mini that is not connected to a display/monitor/tv, but I use it as my iTunes server to stream media to the appletv .  However, I was hoping I could mirror the Mac Mini to the AppleTV in order to see Safari and regular Hulu on the television, but when I try, the picture is scrambled and crashes the mac mini.  I turn on airplay mirroring using the Rowmote application on my iphone since I cannot see what the mac mini is displaying.
Additionally, I tried connecting the mac mini to a 2nd hdmi port in the television, while the appletv is connected to the 1st hdmi port, but the image was also scrambled with mirroring turned on.  My television also has a VGA port that can connect to the Mac Mini, but I figure the same problem will occur and have not bought the DVI to VGA cords.
Is there a way to mirror a mac mini to an appletv without the mac mini connected to a separate display and if so, what am I doing wrong?
Thank you for the responses, I appreciate any help.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer).
On the basis of the specifications you have given for your set up, mirroring should work.

  • Target Display Mode iMac 27 mid 2011 with Mac Mini 2011 bootcamp

    Hello,
I can't seem to use Target Display Mode with Bootcamp.
    My configuration:
    Imac 27" mid 2011 with osx 10.8.4
Mac Mini Server 2011 with osx 10.8.4, bootcamp 5 and Windows7
Both are connected via Apple genuine Thunderbolt cable (2m).
When I boot the Mac Mini into OSX then Target Display Mode works perfectly and I can see the osx installed on the Mac Mini on the iMac display.
However, when I reboot the Mac Mini into Bootcamp (windows7 x64) I can't put the iMac in Targt Display Mode and get to see Windows 7 on my iMac screen.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3924#8
The following article says that this should work, however once I reboot osx on the Mac Mini the iMac leaves Target Display Mode immediatly and will not return to Target Display Mode.
Any advice? I contacted Apple Support and a Sr. Enginner said it should be supported and he's checking with a higher tier.
    Thanks

    Yes, it does.

  • Why does my MAC sometimes crash when coming out of sleep mode?

My mac freezea sometimes when coming out of sleep mode, and occasionally the screen will go black. At other times I will be using the MAC and it will just freeze. The only way to get out of it is to kill power and reboot. It seems to be happening more frequently.
It was suggested that I fix permissions and start in sleep mode. This has helped in the past, and I am going to do it again now. I also recently upgraded to 10.6.8, and after that the crashes were fewer, but now they are increasing again.
I am including a log of the recent crash a few minutes ago.

Okay thanks, but I am a newbie who is not a very tech kind of a person. The only periphals I have are a kodak camera dock, a Canon 310 copier/fax/scanner and a pair of altec speakers. How do I determine  if they all have drivers for my MAC? They all seem to work okay, if that is a sign, though the Kodak camera Dock is a bit slow. How also do I determine if they are Apple energy compatible? With each of these peripherals, do I simply disconnect them from my MAC one at a time to see if there improvement?

  • Display issue coming out of sleep (w/ external display)

    Hey everyone,
I've a MacBook Pro with Retina display. running 10.8.2 (and Win7 x64, via Bootcamp).
I somtimes experience trouble coming out of sleep with no external display connected, if the MacBook was connected to an external display when I sent it to sleep and the integrated display's brightness was turned all the way down. Basically, the MacBook's integrated display won't light up. I then need to hold down the power button until the machine powers off, and start it up again. Only then will the display come on, and the machine start normally.
I've been observing this with both an external Thunderbolt Display, and a TV connected through the HDMI port. I don't think this is a Mac OS issue, as I've seen similar behavior on this same machine, running Windows, under Bootcamp.
An example scenario: I'll be using the Thunderbolt Display, or watching a movie on my TV, with the integrated display's brightness turned all the way down, and then, while the display is still connected, I will close the lid - The machine will go to sleep. I will then come the next day, and while the computer is asleep, disconnect the external display, and open the lid. The MacBook's integrated display will not light up, the brightness keys will not respond, and I will need to force-shutdown the machine, and start it again - it will then start up, and usually fall back to the lowest display resolution setting (even though I always use much higher resolutions on both the integrated and external displays).
I'm guessing this is happening because the computer is expecting the external display that was connected to it, during its last operation, to still be available, and when it's not - it panics!
Also, I had times where this happened, and a force-shutdown would not do the trick. I had to actually connect back to the external display, wait for the machine to start normally, take the integrated display's brightness back up, and disconnect the external display. The machine would then resume normal operation, and I would be able to disconnect the external display and work on the integrated display.
Has anyone else experienced this, or anything similar?

There we go. Here's the complete Console report, up until the reboot, which fixed things. I can't make anything out of this, but perhaps someone else can.

    says:
    How do I enable TDM?
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort or ThunderBolt cable to each computer.
Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac being used as a display to enable TDM.
Note: In Keyboard System Preferences, if the checkbox is enabled for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard functions keys," the key combination changes to Command-Fn-F2.
    How do I exit TDM?
To leave TDM, press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac that is in TDM. You can also exit TDM if you shutdown or sleep either computer or detach the cable.
Can I use a third-party keyboard or older Apple keyboard to enable TDM?
Some older Apple keyboards and keyboards not made by Apple may not allow Command-F2 to toggle display modes. You should use an aluminum wired or wireless Apple keyboard to toggle TDM on and

Apple has not announced any new versions of the iPad mini. And we, your fellow users, are not allowed to speculate in these forums. We'll just have to wait and see.

  • Mac pro cinema display cuts out and can't access Mac with screen sharing

    Hi
A weird thing has started happening to my Mac Pro today. After using it for a few minutes the cinema display it is attached to on the Mac Pro just goes black. The Mac Pro is clearly still on - the light is on and i can hear the fans. The Mac Pro shows up on my local network and i can connect to it and access files from my Macbook, but screen sharing doesn't work (i just get the message 'contacting mac pro' and nothing else) and i can't connect to shared iTunes library either, which makes me think it is not just a display issue. I cannot wake the computer with the mouse or keyboard, which makes me think it isn't just a sleep issue. All i can do is physically turn the Mac Pro off, start it up and it will start up successfully and then work for a few more minutes before i get the same problem. I have reset the PRAM and SMC and still have the same problems. Can anyone suggest anything else i can try?
I should mention that i have another problem with the Mac Pro in that it has been spontaneously waking up from sleep and starting up from shutdown, and i still haven't resolved this. I don't know if it is connected to the above issue.
    thanks
    nick

I have experienced almost the exact same thing with my new 2008 Mac Pro and my 30" Apple display. It has happened to me twice in the last few weeks. The first time I chalked it up to a fluke, but now that it's happened again I searched the forums. In both cases I've had music playing in iTunes which continues playing, goes on to the next track, and so on. So the machine has not crashed in full. I too can connect to the files via another computer on the network, but cannot share the screen.
I have not had the sleep issues you have had.
I'll look at the link you provided in your next post to see where that gets me, but I wanted to let you know you were not alone on this one.
