Display comparison for 2011 MBPs

I am about to upgrade to a new 2011 15" MBP and the only remaining decision I am making is if the HD display is worth it. The store I visited only had 15" MBPs with standard glossy displays. They looked great. They also had a 17" with the upgraded matte display. It looked good too but I don't feel it was an accurate comparison.
Has anyone seen a side by side comparison of 15" models with standard and HD glossy displays? Is it really worth it?
I will be working with CAD programs and other design software.

lets say u restricted the first column like this
bring amount in columns
right click edit
bring in fiscal period  from left to right from time dimension
right click fiscal period
hit restrict
enter range of variables
hit ok
hit ok
copy this amount
paste it
now go in 2nd amount
go to fiscal period and hit restrict
u see variable
select variable and right click and hit SET OFFSET
enter -12 twice
now i am asking u to create interval between two variables whose entry is single value
becos
u will use text variable for display
and text variable will only take single entry variable for replacement
so use text variable
go to dispaly and hit Entry of variable
create new variable
hit replacement path
processing by fiscal period
got to replacement tab
replace variable with variable
choose ur 1st entry variable
similarly create another variable with selecting another variable
now use proper offset length and offset start for proper display
i dont know which time char will u use but my assumption
is with respec t to assumption
u will use fiscal period

  • Best Alternative to Expensive Apple RAM for 2011 MBP i7 Upgrade to 8GB?

I'm about to upgrade my 2011 13" i7 to 8GB. I was wondering if there is a consensus on the best non-Apple RAM available for this MBP. I understand that one has to be careful about the RAM chosen to stay trouble free.

As long as it meets the require specs, and you purchase from a reliable dealr, then it doesn't matter whose RAM you purhase. I purchase mine from DataMem while others prefer OWC.

  • Connecting Dual Cinema Displays to a 2011 MBP

I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro that I currently have connected to a 24" Dell monitor via the Mini-DVI/Thunderbolt port, and two other Dell 24's via Diamond USB adapters. I work in software development and always have a lot of windows open. I would like to switch to two 30" monitors instead and am looking at Apple 30" Cinema displays but I am not sure how to connect two of them to my Macbook. Can I?
My MBP has a Thunderbolt port, Firewire and two USB ports...
The USB adapters I have work great but only go up to 2048 x 1152 resolution so those won't work, unless there's a newer version with support for 2560 x 1600.
Is there any way to run two of these off of a MBP?

    anyone?

  • Unable to use any Apple Cinema Displays with unplugged 2011 MBP

My older MBPs have worked with Apple Cinema Displays (I currently have a few year old one and a 2011 27" ACD) while unplugged.  My new 15" MBP however needs to remain plugged in to allow waking (or prevent sleeping) when hooked up to the display in clamshell mode (computer is closed).  Is this a bug, a problem with my configuration, or just the way it is?
    Thanks for any replies.
    Jeff

    Jeff,
if you want your settings to be the same plugged in while not plugged in, you'll need to do so in energy saver preferences in system preferences.
once there, you can tell your computer how to act when on battery power or when plugged in. This means telling it to not sleep even when not plugged in, or visa versa.
if you're talking about using your MBP closed while using the ACD, all you need to do is close it, and move your mouse around. it'll wake up but your ACD will become the main display with your dock and toolbar.

  • Display resolution for 2014 MBP?

How do you adjust the display resolution to the "native" 2880 x 1800 on a mid 2014, 15 inch rMBP with NVIDIA Graphics?
    I can not obtain a resolution above 1920 x1200.

    Hello there, pf2555.
When adjusting resolution for your MacBook Pro Retina, the following Knowledge Base article offers some information on that regard:
Frequently asked questions about using a Retina display - Apple Support
How do I adjust the resolution of my Retina display?
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012 and later) displays have a 2560-by-1600 native resolution at 227 pixels per inch with support for millions of colors.
MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) and MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013 and later) displays have a 2880-by-1800 native resolution at 220 pixels per inch with support for millions of colors.
iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) displays have a 5120-by-2880 native resolution with support for millions of colors.
If you need to adjust the display resolution, choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu. The Retina display offers scaled resolutions that allow you to have text and objects appear larger on screen, or to make them appear smaller which provides more space on screen.  Note: Scaled resolutions do not offer the same visual quality as the Retina setting. Scaled resolutions may also impact graphics performance depending on which applications you are using.
MacBook Pro with Retina display (13-inch) scaled resolution choices
MacBook Pro with Retina display (15-inch) scaled resolution choices
iMac (Retina 5k, 27-inch, Late 2014) scaled resolution choices
Retina displays only use scaled resolutions rather than specific resolution settings like external displays. If you need to use a different resolution than those available on the built-in display, consider attaching an external display via HDMI or Thunderbolt.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • No Hi-Res display option on 2011 MBP 13"

Come on! No Hi-Res option on the new MBP 13"? Are you kidding me?

yeah, it's pretty ridiculous. only apple has the confidence to so blatantly ignore their customers' desires in favor of their agenda. that agenda being to steer people toward the MB Air. As previously stated by Apple, the Air (all solid-state / no optical) is "the future" so the lack of hi-res 13" MBP will give people pause who aren't sure if they really need the hi speed processor of the new MBP. they will instead choose the Air, and likely find that they are very happy with it. They are thus CONVERTED to the new Apple laptop philosophy/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png
I imagine that it also has to do with inventory (to most non-pro users it doesn't even occur to them to think about screen res.) so it's easier to keep them selling like hotcakes without having to consider other configs. that can't be easily changed with a simple parts swap (HD and RAM).
And it's also likely that the margin on the 13" is very slim since the manufacturing costs must be about the same as the 15" (a little extra aluminum doesn't cost much - most everything else is the same except additional graphics chip)
The bottom line is that there are likely VERY few people who were dreaming of a 13" Pro with hi-res who will now defect to a PC. Instead, they will buy the 15" (yeah for Apple/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png higher margin/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png) or buy the Air (yeah for Apple/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png new customers who will live without an optical drive from now on/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png)
    or they'll buy both/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstatic_ __/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png/___sbsstatic___/migration-images /migration-img-not-avail.png (who doesn't want a hi-res 15" + an 11.6 Air?/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png) (Apple wins)
I actually find it more astonishing that there's no backlit keyboard on the Air. But again, this is strategy. People who can't live without it will end up with a 15" Pro (see above for cascading logic)
You have to remember that this is an interim update on the road to "the future" of laptops. (no optical / no hard drive)
All of this is actually what I find so impressive about Apple. Only Apple would knowingly restrict choice to fulfill their own long-term agenda. And this is why they aren't afraid to ditch technologies like the floppy drive or removable batteries. You just have to be willing to stick around for the elaborate chess match. (which you will)
This is all from a guy who was in the "i'll pay anything/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png" camp of 13" hi-res dreamers just a day ago. I just bought a refurb. 13 Air to replace a 5yr old 15" Pro last week (knowing full well that the Pro refresh was imminent). And I love it. But I might have returned it if the 13" hi-res option had appeared. Why? because I'm still holding onto the idea that more ports and more bulk somehow equates to a better experience. That kind of thinking is why there are still PC laptops out there with parallel ports(/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png) Thank you Apple for guiding me to the future - one minor disappointment at a time.
Anybody who doesn't get what I'm saying should read Barry Schwarz's "The Paradox of Choice".
Too much choice = perpetual buyer's remorse.
Still...it would have been pretty sweet to have a new 13" MB Pro with room for a few tool palettes.

  • FPS for 2011 MBP 2.2 WoW

Hey, I just switched over to mac (and it's awesome!) and I installed WoW to check it out, the fps is consistently around 30 when I'm just running around the starting area on recommended (High) settings. Is this a bit low? I've heard other people talking about 60+ almost everywhere, is this their gfx settings? Thanks!

  • Multi display options for MBP using USB - Diamond BVU195 vs Sewell Minideck

    I have narrowed my search for a multidisplay option for my MBP down to 2 devices;
    Diamond BVU195
    http://www.diamondmm.com/BVU195.php
    http://www.amazon.com/Diamond-BVU195-Display-Adapter-included/dp/B002GHBW4S
    and
    Sewell Mindeck
    http://sewelldirect.com/Sewell-Minideck-USB-to-DVI-Display-Adapter.asp
Has anyone had a chance to check out both of these?
There is no easy comparison, any opinions? thanks!

The obvious drawback of USB video adapters like these is that they tie up USB ports you may need for other purposes. If you intend to connect one or more such adapters to a USB hub instead of directly to the computer, be sure to use a hub that has its own AC power supply, and check with the adapter's manufacturer to make sure it has been tested with hubs and found to work that way.
The less obvious disadvantage of USB video adapters is slowness. If you don't use your multiple displays for gaming or other high-speed, demanding video applications, you may not be disappointed. If you do, you probably will be.

  • Can I place a 13" retina display panel into my 2011 MBP?

I was wondering (moreso wishing and hoping) if it's possible to have my 2011 MBP display panel replaced with the recent 13" retina display panel. My 2011 MBP is just out of warranty and its display panel has developed a green line issue that seems too common among MBP displays.
    Thanks!

The best option would be to take this to Apple and pay for it to be fixed. The display will be expensive to fix, so if you feel you can, purchasing a replacement from eBay or somewhere online would be possible. You can not fit a Retina display on as the hings and connectors are different, and even if they were not, the firmware and drivers your Mac will have (and continue to have as the model number tells the system you should have a standard display) can not drive the higher resolution efficiently. This would lead to performance and battery issues.
Consider buying a desktop stand and display for your Mac as well and use the built in display only when necessary. Small problems with LCDs usually develop into worse situations quickly.
    Good luck!

  • External display locked to 640x480 after Windows 8.1 upgrade on 2011 MBP 17 in

I just upgraded to 8.1 from Windows 8 in Bootcamp on my 2011 MBP 17in. Windows 8 ran fine and I was able to connect my Mac to an external display just fine.
After the upgrade to 8.1 when I connect my external display it will only support a resolution of 640x480  and only shows a resolution 640x480 as the is the maximum res it can go. I have also loaded the Windows display driver to the Dell E228WFP to no avail. Any external display I try only shows a resolution of 640x480.
I have removed the AMD Radeon HD7400M from device manager and re-installed the drivers from boot camp 5 but this doesn't resolve the issue.
    Any others havng this issue?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I ran into the same problem but I found out a solution for my early 2011 15-inch MBP.
Basically, with the 8.1 upgrade, the OS mistook my graphics card for another. More specifically, it saw my Radeon HD6490M as one from the 7400M series.
What I did to solve my problem was go to the Device manager, find my graphics card, right-click to get to the 'Properties' panel, and revert to the previous driver (the option should be available). Thanks to this, it reverted to the driver that was used when I was running Windows 8, and my external monitor is working great now.
I hope this will help you!

  • My 2011 MBP has begun running slow with frequent 'spinning beach ball' events. I'm running Yosemite and wondered if I should of use the original install disk for maintenance.

My 2011 MBP has begun running slow with frequent 'spinning beach ball' events. I'm running Yosemite and wondered if I should of use the original install disk for a maintenance reinstall. I presume I'd have to download Yosemite again, though I'd be happy just using Snow Leopard again too.
    Thanks for the help.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • Problems with 17" 2011 MBP optibay sata speeds for SSD.

I have a 17" early 2011 MBP.  I noticed that the optibay SATA is only 3GB/S.  Since I need to set up an internal RAID with SSD (SATA III 6Gb/S), and newer versions are now supporting this (I was under the impression that my earlier one would too), what are my options to get the optibay to work at the proper speed?  Do I need to replace the MBP?  Are there fixes that can be done by Apple repair?
I need this for a number of on site video editing jobs that I need to complete over the next four months.  without the RAID set up, i don't see how I can do this.  I am also in process of getting the new thunderbolt RAID for in the office.
Can anyone give me advice on how to address this issue?  I can swap the system as long as I can pull the current disk drive (and replace with the one that was delivered with the system), if that is what I need to do.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi David,
What little I know about this for sure is that there are at least 2 different optical drive interfaces for the 2011 17" MBP.
I bet you can guess the difference; iirc correctly, the ones that shipped early on have the SATA II interface, while later/current ones have the SATA III. You can check yours in System Profiler, but again, I bet you know already. Again, iirc, the early ones cannot be updated to run at SATA III/6Gbps.
I don't know any of the above with 100% certainty, so I would continue looking/asking, but if it is correct, that means you'd need a new MBP (and need to make sure it's newer stock; what the cutoff is, I have no idea). fwiw

Ok, so i bought a 16GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM for my late 2011 13" MacBook Pro whose memory runs at 1067 MHz (I was also told that late 2011 MBPs run at 1333MHz, is mine an exception, if so, why?)... Im looking for all possibilities to close the compatibility gap because computer freezes at boot and was wondering if there was anything i could do to get this 16GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM to work at 1067MHz or somehow get my computer to run at 1333MHz?...

You don't have a late 2011 MB Pro.
    You have a 2010 version.  Your MB doesn't support 16GB.  8GB Max.
That's what it shows on your about this MAC.
    You need to return the RAM and get 8GB ( 2 X 4GB ) 1066MHz.
Your system bus is set to 1066MHz.
You're having issues because you've installed more RAM than your MB can support.  It's only reading 4GB per bank which totals to 8GB and not 16GB.

  • 2011 MBP + Thunderbolt + DVI 30" Display

    Hi,
Trying to attach one or two monitors to my 2011 MBP but have run up against a wall.
    1) My one Thunderbolt port is attached to a Sonnet Thunderbolt-to-CardBus adapter. The adapter only has one Thunderbolt port, so no possiblilty of daisy-chaining.
    2) I want to hook up a 30" NEC 2560 x 1600 DVI display (and if possible a 23" ACD as well)
    3) There do not seem to be any Thunderbolt Hubs or Splitters available yet. Am I missing something?
    4) The only solution I can see is to use a USB-to-DVI box. Took a look at the StarTech model which supports the high resolution. Is this my only option? What are others doing in this situation?
Can't wait till Thunderbolt is more widely adopted and the cable/hubs/enclosures/etc finally become more widely available.
(FYI- The Sonnet Thunderbolt-to-Cardbus adapter is great. I've got a 10-bay eSATA raid hooked up via this and it is WAY faster than FW800)
    Thank you...

Yes by running a USB cable from the Mac to the HUB input port on the display.
The product disscription states the cable has connectors on it to connect to USB.

  • Hard disk for second-hand 13" early-2011 mbp (2.7 hz i7, 8gb ram)

i might be able to get hold of a cheap, second-hand 13" early-2011 macbook pro, specs are 2.7 ghz core i7 with 8 gb ram. it will not come with a hard disk.
i'm thinking of asking a friend to help install the harddrive but as far as i know he's not a mac user. do you know if this mbp can accept any generic hard disk? are there any restrictions as to what can be used and is there anything he should be aware of?

First, you're going to need a hard drive. Currently, for the MBP, you can choose from three types of drives. SATA drives (for the current MBP, SATA-3) a reliable and come in two speeds, 5400 or 7200RPM. SSDs are solid state drives, and can be fast and reliable. Hybrid drives are a cross between the two types.
Several sites will provide you with video tutorials on installing the drive. OWC has a variety of helper tutorials.
Once you get the drive, you're going to have to install the operating system. Currently, the OS is downloaded via internet, but you can still find copies of an older OS on eBay that comes on DVDs.
Feel free to ask more questions!
