From System Profiler, please post the "Machine Model" information from its Hardware Overview page. There are quite a few MBP variants today and knowing the exact variant helps others help you.
Example: the Machine Model" info for my Late 2007 MBP 15" is "MacBookPro3,1" and this very accurately identifies the computer for troubleshooting purposes.
If the machine model reports a number higher than "4,1" you have a newer MBP that's covered in this forum section:

  • 110 vs 220 Power - Apple Display Connector

I recently moved from a 220V power country to a 110V power country. My 2008 Quadcore MacPro switched over no problem, everything worked fine. My older 2.0Ghtz MacPro has two problems:
    1. The fans run highspeed within minutes of turning it on. Very noisy, and definitely not due to heat. Cool - cold in the home and the computer has just started, yet they run loud and noisy.
    2. The Apple Display Screen (plastic casing, 23" inch) doesn't light up. It hooks into the MacPro with the Apple Display Connector, thus no separate power connector. The MacPro clearly says on the back that it works with 110-220V power, so my assumption is that it will feed the proper power through the Apple Display Connector. The Display's front white on/off button lights up when pressed, so some power is getting through to it, the screen just doesn't lite up.
    Any thoughts?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
It can be used with any voltage, it has a universal power unit.

  • OS 10.4.6 and display connector

In March I got a G4 Mini to replace my old Mac. In the formidable process of getting all my functions to work on the Mini, I would have to swap computers several times, so I did not screw the connector from my monitor to the adapter on the Mini.
In a month, I removed my old Mac from my desk. In the next two hours, my Mini's response to mouse clicks was a little erratic. Then the screen went blue. I reached back to be sure the display connector was seated.
I restarted and the screen remained blue for several minutes. I restarted again and saw faint flickers of my desktop. In a few minutes the desktop suddenly appeared. I could find no indication of trouble in the logs.
It worked fine for eight days. Then the response to the mouse and keyboard became slightly erratic. The next day I started the computer and told Internet Connect to dial. The screen went blue, but there were a couple of flashes when I saw that Internet Connect was keeping track of my online time.
Six times I restarted and let it sit five minutes with a blue screen. Once I disconnected the power supply for five minutes. I zapped the PRAM. It looked fine on the Install disk, which found no hardware problem, but blue was all I got from the hard drive.
I removed the Mini to use my old Mac to find Apple's phone number. When I hooked up the Mini two hours later, I screwed down the display connector. I had to back out one screw a turn or two so the connector would seat fully and I could engage the screw. The Mini started immediately. The System Log seemed to say that all the startups that day had been normal. I could find no record of a crash in the last few days.
Was the problem ambiguous continuity in the connector? I want to be sure. Is OS 10.4.6 more sensitive to a display connector problem than is the Install disk? Under 10.4.6, can a problem in the display connection cause a misreading of keystrokes and mouse clicks?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you "reached back" as you say, you may have
inadvertantly bent the connector plugging it into the
Mini. The bend may be ever so slight as to not be
noticeable, but the computer would be sensitive to
it. When dealing with computer connectors, it is
important to remember to pull them evenly out and
push them evenly in, being observant that the pins
are matching the holes, and not move them at an angle
from each other when the connection is taking place.
What I called "reaching back" was reaching forward. It was after the screen turned blue. I could see the connector on the back of the Mini. I pushed it directly toward the connector on the Mini. Nothing moved, so I assumed it was fully seated. I didn't realize the screw might have been interfering.
Try a different display to see if the connector of
the display itself, or the connector on the Mini is
    what is damaged.
I assume screwing the connector down during the second incident has eliminated the possible electrical problem.
Activating the dialup connection may have triggered
the display to go wild if something is wrong with the
connector or cable's shielding. It is unlikely to
happen because the voltages and RF created by the
modem is so little, but I wouldn't say it is
    impossible.
Making the dialup connection proved that the computer continued to work after my screen went blue.
The fact the logs say nothing suggests the problem is
more than likely to be just between the connectors
    and cable.
That sounds right to me, but I want to understand two loose ends in case something else is wrong:
    1. In each incident, why was the first symptom an inconsistent response to mouse clicks?
    2. Why did it work fine when I booted from the Install disk?
Your reference to RF may point to the answers. I should look at a pinout to see where the sync pins are in that connector. Suppose the screw was keeping the connection physically open on one side so that a sync pin was barely making contact. If it opened to the point of invisibly tiny sparking, that could have interfered with the click signals of my wireless mouse.
If the connection opened a couple of microns more, I would have lost my sync. I wonder if the loss of a sync signal causes an SVGA CRT monitor to go blue.
Why would I still get a display if I booted from the Install disk? It probably had a different refresh rate and maybe a different scan frequency. In the case the sync voltage may have been high enough to jump the bad connection.
If that's a reasonable explanation, I can feel confident that the only problem was an unscrewed connector.

  • MacMini (2011) problem with Thunderbolt display if 2nd monitor is connected via HDMI/DVI adapter

    Hi,
    iam running a MacMini (2011) 2.3GHz i5 with Mac OS X 10.7.4 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 256 GB Samsung SSD.
If i connect a Thunderbolt display only - all is fine.
But if i connect a 2nd monitor ( Samsung S23A700) via HDMI / DVI adapter (original Apple) the major screen (Thunderbolt Display) sometimes
is going black and immidiately back to normal. It looks like that it happens very often if i scroll down with the Apple Magic Mouse.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance
    Thomas

I have exactly the same problem. MacMini Server i7 (mid 2011) Macmini5.3.16Gb ram.
    Mini and Thunderbolt no blink-outs.
Mini and Thunderbolt and Dell 23" connected to HDMI-DVI connector, the Thunderbolt display blinks out when system is under stress as in the Develop module of Lightroom 4.
I thought it was a problem with my Thunderbolt display, and since its on a VESA mount, I didn't really want to haul in in to the Apple Store.  I decided to be sure it was the dosplay...
I borrowed a MacbookPro i7 and ran it from a clone of my Mini. No problems aster hours of use. (But with only ONE monitor.)  That suggested that there was no problem with the Thunderbolt Display.
I decided to run the Mini with only one display.  Again no problems. I plugged in the Second monitor to the HDMI port and within 2 minutes I had my first "Blink-Out".
I ran the rest of the day without the second monitor with no problems.
I conclude the mini will not work reliably with two monitors if one is a Thunderbolt.
I was using two Dell Monitors before I got the Thunderbolt Diskplay (for 3 months) without incident.

It appears what happened is the installer though it was looking at a empty drive and just went ahead and installed.
I of course am assuming here you didn't use Disk Utility to format the drive first before installing, that would wipe out your files and programs for sure.
So what to do, what to do.
Well there is hope for you as long as the drive wasn't Filevaulted.
I'll explain. When a hard drive writes data for the first time to a drive, it starts at the very top and works it's way down.
When OS X was installed the first time, it was at the top of the drive, unless you upgraded then the upgraded OS X could have been written elsewhere.
Now when you just reinstalled OS X, the new OS went on the top of the drive, overwriting any data that was there previously, so what was there you have lost forever which is about 8GB or so. If it was the previous OS there, then your more in luck because only the old OS X was overwritten.
The remaining space on the drive still can have a copy of your files, provided it's not overwritten yet.
It's because when a hard drive deletes data or reformats, it doesn't remove the data off the drive or overwrites it immediately, it's just made so it's SPACE is available for new files to be written there.
So technically one can recover the deleted data off a non-encrypted/scrubbed hard drive with special software.
The way it does this is it reads the 1's and 0's of the files themselves, and through a lot of figuring out, can tell what that file is and what it belongs too.
So what you will have to do is this:
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
or if you don't have the skills, then take it to a local PC/Mac tech and they can do a direct image of the drive and then you can run Data Rescue on it to rebuild your files.

  • HT3382 Connect from a MacBook Pro's mini display port to a Display Port monitor?

    Hello everyone,
Is it possible to connect from a MacBook Pro's mini display port to a Display Port monitor with resolutions higher than 1920 x 1200? It seems Apple does not supply a mini-DP to DP adapter.
However, just as they do not make a mini-DP to HDMI adapter, but they do recommend a Belkin product for this purpose.
Is there any reason that a mini-DP to DP adapter or cable wouldn't work and support high resolutions?
    Thanks for your feedback!

    Hey tjk,
    Thanks for the response.
Do you have any recommendations for a potential set up? The audio output and Apple DVI are on different sides of my MBP, which is alright, I guess I can get two long cables to handle each. I was hoping to just have my MBP closer to where I use it, with a cord nearby plugged in on one side to the HDTV and resting near where I keep my MBP for when I want to use the HDTV as an external monitor.
With a converter like this, you can run video out of the MBP's DVI port, and miniToslink (optical) audio out of the 3.5mm stereo mini jack to the converter, then it will combine the two and output audio and video through HDMI to the monitor.
    http://www.supermediastore.com/product/u/apogee-dvi-to-hdmi-converter-spdif-opti cal-toslink-coaxial-input-output?utm_source=cj&utm_medium=aff&utm_content=HDMI+A ccessories
Otherwise, depending on the TV's inputs, for video you could run DVI to DVI on the TV, or DVI to HDMI to the TV. For audio you could run 3.5mm stereo mini plug from the MBP to RCA adapter on the TV. Toslink/optical is also an option.

  • Hi, I just got an Apple Thunderbolt Display. How can I connect it to my sony vaio pc? Thanks

Hi, I just got an Apple Thunderbolt Display. How can I connect it to my sony vaio pc? At Apple Store they gave me a Mini Display Port to VGA Adapter, but monitor doesnt display any image. Thanks for your help!

no, your computer needs to have thunderbolt technology. does it?
if not, no adapter can make a thunderbolt display work on a non-thunderbolt computer.
someone was likely confused since miniDP will FIT into a TB socket but is only compatible one way, ie a mDP display can work on a TB machine, but a TB display cannot work on a mDP machine

Has anyone else had this problem? If so how can I fix this?

Remember, any purchased item from the itunes store is forever associated with the Apple ID used to buy it.  So when you get prompted for an ID/password and it doesn't accept it, then you are using the wrong ID.
Go to Settings>iTunes and App Stores, be sure it's logged into the ID you have set on the iphone (since that one seems to be connecting with the right ID).  If you've done this, then you might wait a bit to see if the "cannot connect to .. store" message has to do with internet connections.

  • How to display the status of a SubVI on the front panel?

    Hi,
I am writing a program to control an instrument through a serial communication port. The control and communication functions are integrated in a SubVI and they work fine.
In the front panel of the main VI, I want to add some indicators to display the status of those controls in real time, such as using some LEDs to show whether the program is running in some loops of the SubVI, or use some indicators to show some variables in the SubVI.
I tried using global variables, but I can't make them work in real time (or maybe I didn't do it right). The values of the global variables are actually changing on the fly, but the indicators on the front panel wouldn't reflect those changes until the program return
    ed from the SubVI.
Is there a way to do this in Labview 6.0.2?
Your earlist help is very much appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Hua

    Hua,
I have attached an example in which a front panel boolean indicator is toggled in the subvi. Also, a front panel stop button is used to stop the loop execution in the subvi. References are passed to the subvi instead of the actual control values.
Without seeing your code I'm not sure what was going on with the globals, but you had to have a data dependency somewhere which was keeping the code from running until after the execution of the subvi. The code must be totally independent of the subvi in order to run. Also, in order for the update to work it would have to be operating in a loop.
