Display Contrast keeps dropping to black.

I've had a look at other threads but non of them seem to have quite the same symptoms. I've tried lots of suggested solutions to no avail.
My Macbook 4,1 (early 2008, running OSX 10.5.8) screen keeps blacking out irregularly - sometimes every 5 minutes, sometimes after 10 seconds, then 30 seconds, then it'll be fine for 2 mnutes.
It's definitely the contrast that keeps dropping and not the screen sleeping - I can still see a very faint display. I don't have the ambient light sensor activated and it can be left completely alone, not touched and it will just randomly dim itself.
The only way I can get the contrast up again is to use the contrast keyboard buttons to dim it all the way down and then brighten it up again. Sometimes that doesnt work and going to 1 on brightness just flashes the screen up breifly. I then have to alternate on the contrast buttons toggling between 0 and 1 to get it to eventually work. It also sometimes helps just closing the screen then opening it up again.
I have the problem with battery in, with the battery out, ive restarted and turned off over night. Luckily, I backed everything up last night onto an FAT32 partitioned external drive. I think it highly unlikely that that could be the cause, but I don't want to leave anything vital out and seems like a bit of coincidence to have started the same night!
As you can imagine, this is unbelievably infuriating - any help greatly appreciated! I have the option to do a software reinstall in a couple of days when my Snow leopard disc comes in the post but I'd like to try everything else first...
Thank you so much.

Same model, same problem, same time. This seems to have worked for some people:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3547027
I tried it (knocking sleeping computer gently against a table, then blowing out the back), and its okay for the moment, but the problem has been intermittent for me, so can't say if its solved.
Will be checking back on this forum to see if anyone else chimes in.

  • Internet connection keeps dropping at night

I'm having a bit of a weird problem with my internet connection. I connect via an ethernet cable and the connection keeps dropping. It generally starts after 7pm and seems to be every 40 minutes. I have changed the microfilters and ethernet cable but I'm still getting this problem. The really weird thing is that all four lights on the hub are blue but the computer cannot connect to the router. Sometimes the connection will just drop other times it will say limited connection. I've finally had to resort to windows diagnostics and sometimes even that doesn't work. I swapped my black hub with the old white one and  I didn't have this problem of the connection dropping but my connection speed dropped to 1.5 - 2mb.
I was thinking maybe there was something wrong with my ethernet card but now I think it must be something in the black hub because the white one worked. Am I correct in thinking I need a new router?

  • Since I have downloaded IOS5 on my IPAD and synced to my IMac, Safari keeps dropping off before downloading the website, is slow, also an icon which accessed open safari windows is no longer available.  Apps trouble too.  Help?

Since I have downloaded IOS5 on my IPAD2 and synced to my IMac, Safari keeps dropping off before site is downloaded and is slow.  There was an icon that showed how many windows were open on Safari and when pressed displayed them, that has disappeared and apps do not always download.  Sometimes by making several/many attempts, it eventually downloads the website or app, but this is not right.  When trying to dowload any lonks from an email, they simply do not open, it keeps going back to the home screen.  Does anybody have any suggestions?  I only bought the IPAD 2 in June!

Also the touch screen does not seem to be responding adequately.  Thank you for any help you can give.

  • Streaming a movie from Flixster & using Bluetooth speakers, my wi-fi connection keeps dropping

When streaming a movie from Flixster and using Bluetooth speakers, my wi-fi connection keeps dropping, like every 2 seconds! Anyone have any suggestions on how to rectify this issue?  In fact, I don't even have to be streaming the movie. When I was in settings and went to connect to the speakers, I could see the wireless connection dropping, then restarting!

  • Have an iPad 1...keeps dropping back to the "desktop" as I am looking at books to purchase...How to fix?

My iPad 1 keeps dropping out when I am browsing the iBooks store...Is there a fix for this?

Perform a "reset" on the device by pressing down and holding the home button and the sleep/wake button for up to 30secs. until you see a black screen with the Apple logo, then release.
Then test to see if it solved the problem.

  • My screen keeps on going black.

My iphone 4 screen keeps on going black but im able to screenshot, so i know it on. So i have to keep on rebooting my phone nearly everyday, does anyone know what's wrong with my phone?

    Hi Megan,
For issues with your iPhone display going black, I would suggest starting with the steps in this article -
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
Specifically under Display has no backlight or dark screen -
Toggle the ringer switch to see if the unit vibrates. If it does, it could be that iPhone is getting power, but is not displaying any image.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
If the low-battery screen appears, charge the iPhone.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,

  • Ipad(1) keeps dropping

Ipad (1) keeps dropping out and returning to the front screen. Any ideas?

Yes, hold it tighter so that you don't drop it!
Seriously, this may well be the crashing problem that some others have experienced.  I have not had the problem myself so my suggestions should be taken with a grain of salt.
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely.  Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

Device operating system releases are "released" by specific carriers once they have certified and trained their support techs, but still, you are able to load to any carrier's same model by following the instructions below.
See the link below, for the download and simple installation instructions.
    http://www.blackberryforums.com/general-9700-series-discussion-bold-2/224375-latest-os-9700-5-0-0-10...

Some users might worry they will void their device warranty by loading an OS from another carrier. There is really nothing to worry about.

  • Wi-fi keeps dropping connection

    Hi
I have an iMac, bought 2 weeks ago, and my wi-fi keeps dropping it's connection to the router - I have heard and read about a Lion issue with poor wi-fi quality, but all my software is up to date patch-wise.
I have changed my channels (I have tried 1,6 and 11) on my router in case of interference - and it makes a difference to the speed of the connection, but it is still happening.
Makes no difference as to whether I am online watching streaming video, or if the iMac is not touched for a while, it still happens, and appears to be completely random - for instance, yesterday, I watched a football game, and in the first half it didn't happen at all, and it happened 5 times in the 2nd half. The router is fine, it's just simply the iMac dropping it's connection to the wireless router itself.
It also makes no difference what app I am using - but when I try to reconnect, it either doesn't display my router name in there at all, or when it tries to connect, it states "a timeout has occured" - however, if i switch off the iMac at the back (quick standby), then switch if back on again, it sees it, connects and no problem - then stays connected for a random period of time until it disconnects again
I have another (spare) router upstairs, and my iMac is exactly the same with that!
And also my MacBook Pro, Apple TV, iPad, iPhone, PS3, wife's PC, daughters laptop all have no problem connecting to my main router and staying connected.
So now, I'm beginning to think it's hardware...
    Anyone offer any other suggestions?

It's  possible your router may need a firmware upgrade or if it's an older router upgrading to 802.11N would help. I know your other devices work OK but first check the router, check for firmware updates and update if needed. If you still have a problem borrow a newer router from a friend and test it, if everything works OK that points the finger at your old router.
Finally you do have 90 days of Free AppleCare, you should call Apple and ask for help. The number is in your manual. BTW AppleCare is open M-Saturday during business hours.

  • BT Infinity connection keeps dropping between 5pm ...

I went with infinity over 3 weeks ago, it's all very good but I noticed after 2 days that the connection keeps dropping at night times, this is more evident in browsingthe web, my online game does not seem to suffer from disconnections, only web browsing on my pc connected through Ethernet and my partners laptop/iPaD which connects over wifi.
I don't seem to be getting anywhere with BT
1st time I logged it was told to change the wireless channel by Some guy in India who could barely speak English , I tried to explain I wasn't even using wifi and it was happening, changed channel and no fix.
2nd call and another India based person told me they had done a line test and found a fault, an engineer would go out and fix it in the morning, my fault was then closed, needless to say the problem continued..
3rd call and open reach engineer came out today , did various tests, couldn't find any problems, I have a good throughput apparently, he said it must be radio interference?.
I don't feel like i am getting anywhere with these, we do a lot of ebay and web browser based operations here and it's getting very frustrating after submitting data to be treated by  this webpage can not be displayed.
My opinion is that there is an issue with connection and resyching of the modem as it is only happening in the evening when it's  at it busiest, the lights don't go out on the router during the 30 second dropouts, it happens at random times, last night at 11:45 and again at 11:55, tonight it's happened at 9:30 so far, expecting many more.
Anybody any idea what could be causing this or any quick fixes, I am quite technical also
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

do the lights on the Openreach modem go out when you drop happens

  • Why does my iphone keep dropping calls

Why does my iphone4 keep dropping calls??? It has been doing it for over a week. Does anyone have an answer.... AT&T says they are not having any problems and I have done everything but restore my phone.

Unfortunately, this has plagued the AT&T iPhone since the original model came out. It's most likely a dead zone causing the issue (I have the sameissue from time to time). You can also get a Micro Cell from AT&T, it's basically just an access point that allows you to pick up a cellular signal at home or work (where ever you set it up).
To eliminate any hardware issues, make sure you're on the latest build of the OS (4.3.3 for the AT&T iPhone 4) - I noticed you're still on 4.3.2. If you don't have a case, I suggest the Apple bumper or any case that covers the metal bezel on your phone, that will help as well.
Also, you can "reboot" your phone. To do this, hold down the metal sleep button on the upper-right corner of your phone until the "slide to power off" slider is displayed, then power off the phone. Wait a few minutes and turn it back on.
    Hope this helps!

  • WiFi on iPhone 5S 7.0.6 keeps dropping WiFi then not reconnecting

This is my third iPhone, had a 3GS, 4S and now this 5S. While I love my iPhone it is always dropping my WiFi connection at home. I have a Retina Macbook Pro which has zero problems, there's also two 4S's, a 5C and three iPads all connecting no problem. Well the iPad Mini has now started having problems recently.
I find my connection has dropped and now is on very slow cellular. I go to WiFi in settings and click on my home network (extremely fast fibre). When I click on it the iPhone asks for my WiFi password. So I enter my password for the hundredth time and it just doesn't connect.
I have to spend ages turning my iPhone and router off and on again. This has been going on since I got the phone in December.
I am a seriously unhappy customer here Apple, I've spent thousands of pounds on your products and this is unacceptable, feels like a downgrade compared to my 4S which never set a foot wrong. I imagine it's related to iOS 7 than the hardware.
I have seen others have had this issue and want an answer, I'm really hope iOS 7.1 fixes this, there's so many little bugs and inconsistancies with this OS, feels unpolished.

Same problem with iPad3 wifi+cellular. Since iOs 7.0.6 the wifi on the device became unusable. Immediately after implementing this crap update, wifi connection keeps dropping in every 2 minutes.  I tried to reset the device twice, even restore network settings, but doesn't help. All other devices have the same stable connection at home, than before. The problem is the IOS 7.0.6 update! This is ridiculous! Quality is significantly dropped since ios 5.1.1. The head of this developer department must be fired out! Now I cannot use my wifi at all!
