Display dead, then comes back to life- can Nvidia issue be intermittent?

I have a MacBook Pro MA896LL (Core 2 Duo Santa Rosa) that I use with an external display most of the time.
Rebooted a few days ago only to see nothing- sleep light on the computer was solid but laptop and external displays were blank. Disconnected external display and power-cycled, same thing- discovered that the computer is actually on but just no video (can boot in firewire mode, etc.). Tried the usually stuff, reset PRAM, SMC, left it off for a while, nothing. Figured I must have the dead Nvidia card issue.
Anyway, booted it back up today in Firewire mode to finish backing it up, and lo and behold, the display is working again!
Question- can the Nvidia issue be intermittent, or is it just working or not?
I have AppleCare, but repairs unfortunately involve me flying to Miami and hanging around for a few days while they repair it, and I'd hate to go and then they tell me it is not that problem, only to return home and have it again.
thanx

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I think that the NVIDIA problem can be intermittent, and the fact that the external display was also blank does indicate the graphics card.
While the display is working, you might try running the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test and see if you get anything in the way of an error code.
Also, call Apple on the telephone to report the problem and to get a case number. Explain that the problem seems to be intermittent, and for that reason you would prefer not to fly to Miami for the reasons you gave. Ask if there is an AASP in your area that could do a diagnostic test. Apple has some sort of special procedure for testing for the NVIDIA issue, and it may be that someone local can do this for you.
If you get any results on the AHT or any other diagnostic test that would confirm the problem, then you can arrange to have the repair done at your convenience.
In the meantime, you might keep a log of when the problem occurs. For example, the chip may work fine when the computer has been off a while and is cold, but the problem might occur when the computer has been on a while, and maybe with intensive processor activity. If you can discover any conditions which will reliably cause the problem to occur, you will be much more successful at showing it to someone at Apple.
Good luck!

  • Stalls during boot- then comes back to life

I have a Toshiba A215 satellite laptop.  Sometimes when I start the computer it loads the bios then just stops.  The screen is blank, not black, there is no hard drive activity. Not responsive to any keys.  Then, if I just let it sit, for about 45-60 minutes, it just comes back to life and finishes booting normally.  Operating system is Vista Home.  I have run PC Pitstop which fixed a bunch of stuff, but not this.  I have flashed the BIOS, so it is the latest update.  I have shut off "sleep" and "hibernate" because of other problems.  It happens mostly when I try to start soon after shutting down.  If I start after being off overnight, it seems to always start normally.  I have also tried the pull the battery, hold the start button trick without successs.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply but how would customer support help me with a hardware problem ?  I once had a problem with the power jack on this computer.  Toshiba wanted $375 to fix it.  Got it fixed by Geek Squad for 100 bucks.  Anyway, I don't think it is hardware.  Can anyone else suggest a possible fix ?  I believe that after the BIOS is loaded, the next thing is to load Vista.  This is where the computer just pauses for 45 minutes before finishing the booting process.  What the heck is it doing, resting ?   Thanks in advance.

  • Battery dies then comes back to life

    Hi
My ipod mini switches itself off saying the battery is dead after maybe 3 hours, and when i try to turn it on again, has a dead battery still. If i wait a while longer, maybe only 15mins and try to turn it on again, it will play for a further hour or so. What's going on??

  • Macbook briefly freezes then comes back to life during sessions

My Macbook, which I've owned since September 2006, is starting to suffer from brief freezes. For a few seconds, all operations freeze on the screen (the cursor is still movable), then it's followed by a few seconds of the spinning wheel, and then things start moving again. The computer has never frozen to the point where I have to restart; however, the freeze-ups can be bunched up (two or three times in succession), and can be as long as 30 seconds. Also (and this may be common sense more than anything), this episodes only seem to happen when the Macbook has been on for long periods of time, including sleep periods.
I've been meaning to increase my RAM for a while now, and I suspect that this situation is a result of the RAM I have being either defective or just overtaxed. But I wanted to see if that is the consensus of the crowd here.

  • Why do I get an apple on my Ipad after it locks up and then comes back to life?

My wifi 32 gb Retina Ipad seems to crash . Seems like it started after IOS 6 upgrade...  Looking at web pages it might just close application...  Not too bad ,, then on occasion it will lock up and I hold the side button and then push the home button and it will go dark and then show a white apple in the middle and then after a while repair itself.....  Any Ideas?   Anyone know what the apple symbol means?   Thanks Joe

If the reset and restore doesn't work, try and force your iPad into Recovery Mode (data will be lost)
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Connect USB cable to computer; leave the other end alone
    3. Press and hold the Home button down and connect the docking end of cable to iPad
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect To iTune" screen
    5. Release the Home button
    6. Open iTune
    7. You should see "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode"
    8. Use iTune to restore iPad
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad

How can I transfer video taken with my iPhone to my iPad WITHOUT using a computer or iTunes? I'm going to Europe for a month and want to use my iPhone to take pics and video, then come back to the hotel room and use my iPad to edit/store each evening. I don't want to use my iPad to take the video...too large/bulky. And I WON'T have a computer with me...I purchased the iPad to take with me so I could use the RDC to my home computer and avoid taking my computer at all. Is this possible?

here is a cheaper solution than camera kit and a lot easier if you have WIFI available.
I use the PhotoSync APP (I think its a $1.99) will transfer videos and photos over WIFI to any other IOS device or even PC/MAC. Great app since I like doing video and photos on my IPHONE and transfer to IPAD2 without synching through computer or doing cloud based storage.
You can even send photos/videos from your MAC/PC to your IOS devices that way too. Makes it so much easier.

photoshop cs6 error "could not use the type tool because the target channel is hidden.  happens when im typing in photoshop, go to another layer and then come back. can't alter text at that point.  i really need to get thsi figured out. thank you.

You may have answered my question. I AM using the 64bit version of Illustrator CS6. I had no idea there were bugs in it that affected paths copied and pasted from Illustrator to Photoshop.
A bit more about what I'm trying to accomplish... I'm trying to follow Deke's tutorial (http://www.deke.com/content/dekes-techniques-018-creating-a-3d-pie-chart) which is already difficult since so much has changed between CS5.5 and 6, but then on top of that, I keep getting errors!
So I created the pie chart exactly as he shows and copied and pasted into Photoshop exactly as he does. Before submitting this post, though, I tried drawing just two very simple triangle shapes, copying them both and pasting them into Photoshop as a shape layer. The shapes weren't overlapping, but they were a part of the same shape layer just like the pie chart tutorial.
Thanks for your help. If there is anything else I should try before just giving up because of the 64bit bugs, please let me know.

  • Can't SMS people who have gone overseas and then come back - weird!!!!!!

I have a problem with my texts when OTHER people go overseas. When they come back from overseas they can text me but I can't return their text. This has happened 3 times now with 3 different people. I have tried deleting and adding their number and entire contact again, added and deleted the +61 before their number.
One of the people's text came to me from their @icoud name but they were actually sending it from their phone and the phone setting said they had sent it from their actual telephone number.
When i tried to reply it bounced back but when I returned text to their @icloud address it went through as a normal text and ended up their conversation thread from me.
As I mentioned its only happened to people who have been overseas and then come back to Australia.
Very confusing - any ideas anyone.
    thanks Craig

Sorry it took me so long to write back, But unfortunately this didn't help my issue.
My uncle and I did a lot of tests on this computer and have narrowed down the location of the problem a little bit.
We tried to first reset the SMC and the NVRAM as suggested, but the only thing that did was make the fans run on full tilt for the first session after restarting it for some reason. After that we tried re installing OSX over the OSX that was already on the system (not removing any of the files). This also didn't do anything but make refit stop working. Then we moved onto the next task at hand by removing the hard drive entirely and booting it as an external drive from one of the USB ports... as long as you booted it with the options key held down, it worked perfectly fine. Then we put an alternative hard drive into the computer and installed OSX on that. This time there was no trouble booting anything up. Everything seemed to work flawlessly. So we made a backup of my original drive (OSX, Windows, and all) onto an external hard drive and tested booting to it via USB. That again worked perfectly fine and booted right up with no problems. So after that we formatted the original hard drive and reinstated OSX. We then proceeded to transfer all the old files from the backup onto this new installation and LOW AND BEHOLD..... we were back to square one with it refusing to recognize the hard drive again.
So this basically told us that there appears to be something either wrong with the hard drive, or something got really screwed up in the software along the lines and by me copying all my old files back over, I just ended up bringing the screwed up file back over with it! (despite not copying over any settings of any kind) So I am still extremely confused as to what is going wrong... did some boot sector possibly get screwed up may be?

  • Single Beep, Display cuts out, then comes back

I've had my macbook for a little over a year. Recently the hard drive died. I replaced it, and figured I'd put new memory in it while I was at it (2GB, Samsung). For a while I ran 10.4 (I was on vacation and didn't have access to my external), and everything seemed to work fine. When I finally got back to my apartment and restored my system with Time Machine, things started off well, but then some weird things started happening. First, when I installed new updates, my computer restarted itself a couple times during the installation (after the initial restart), but then stopped, and installation was successful. I figured things had resolved themselves, but then I started getting these weird problems.
When I close my macbook, it goes into standby, but will sometimes start up randomly while still closed. Also, when I go to open it, it will sometimes load, only to cut out again, make a single loud beep, and then come back and boot up fine.
I've read that a single beep usually means a RAM issue, but I'm curious if the problem is maybe with my system, and I should reformat, since it seemed to run fine with 10.4.
Hopefully I've been detailed enough, but let me know if you need more info. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Not resolved!

  • Console does not comes back to life after screen blanking

    edited post on 2014-07-13:
This problem has nothing to do with suspend-to-RAM and/or suspend-to-disk (hibernate).
It is a screen blanking on the console triggered by a timeout in the kernel.
It can be modified (or disabled) with the setterm command for the current session.
The issue is still unresolved since the console doesn't comes back to life after hitting a key.
See post#6 on 2014-07-13 for further details.
    Changed title accordingly.
original post on 2014-07-09 titled "blank screen on resume after suspend but screen OK after hibernation" follows:
Dell Inspiron 9400 (aka E1705) with Radeon X1400 (RV515) (confirmed by dmesg: loading R500 microcode)
    - arch x86_64 fully updated up to 07-JULY-2014
    - xf86-video-ati open source driver installed
    - no (additional; ie: explicitly) installed power management packages such as pm-utils
    - no X installed
    The problem:
    • hibernation works fine; ie: by closing (and waiting a few seconds) and re-opening the lid
    • however resume after suspend isn't working; ie: by pressing any key to resume ... it seems the screen never comes back to life
After suspend activates (and after I hit a key to activate resume) I see no activity at all (blank screen) but ... if I type some commands (eg: timedatectl etc) and then I close the lid to activate the hibernation sequence re-opening the lid (say, a minute later) the machine comes back from hibernation as expected and I can see the commands (and output) I typed when the screen was blank so ... it seems to me either:
    • the backlight state is not restored on the resume sequence (first thought)
    • the machine shuts down the screen after (a 10 minute) timeout but never activates the suspend sequence (and will never activate resume then) (second thought while reading dmesg output)
This problem was present on this laptop since my first (and subsequent) arch installations so it seems is not kernel/driver specific since I did many pacman --sysupgrades in between while learning arch.
The testing sequence (with related entries on included dmesg output):
    - typed timedatectl ... showing 23.29.04
    - now allowing idle time for the machine to suspend
    - suspend starts at 23.39 (ie: after 10 minutes) ... tag it as event1#1
    - after 30 seconds resuming with the space key and after a few seconds typing (blindly) timedatectl ... tag it as event1#2
    - after 60 seconds closing the lid allowing time for hibernation ... tag it as event2#1
    - after 30 seconds opening the lid ... tag it as event2#2
    - now I can see the output for timedatectl (typed blindly on event1#2) and it shows 23.40.11
As you can see in attached dmesg output (at the bottom of this post) there are (to me) no evident entries for event1#2 (resuming after suspend):
    ... event#1-1 ... suspend starts here:
    [Mon Jul 7 23:40:12 2014] perf interrupt took too long (2504 > 2495), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 50100
... event#1-2 ... resume from suspend should show some entries here:
    no entries at all
And the next entry after entering the suspend sequence is the starting of the hibernation sequence (when closing the lid):
    ... event#2-1 ... hibernation starts here:
[Mon Jul 7 23:41:30 2014] PM: Syncing filesystems ... done.
[Mon Jul 7 23:41:30 2014] smpboot: CPU 1 is now offline
... event#2-2 ... coming back from hibernation (I think) starts here:
    [Mon Jul 7 23:41:30 2014] ACPI: Low-level resume complete
    [Mon Jul 7 23:41:31 2014] Restarting tasks ... done.
[Mon Jul 7 23:41:31 2014] video LNXVIDEO:00: Restoring backlight state
So the machine shuts off the screen (and/or backlight) but never enters suspend mode because "restoring backlight state" appears once and should appear twice in my testing.
    Why isn't working then ?
Because the signal to enter suspend mode is never sent/received by the OS ?
Which brings me to a key question: is the acpi package (which it is not installed) (or something like that) required for such signaling ?
In the following post a user claims a similar problem but he can see some activity (after resuming from suspend) by directing a bright light to the screen so the problem there seems to be the backlight not powered up again: it is not my case, when I did the same I saw no activity at all.

I think that it is something wrong with kernel and graphic drivers but i'm not able to solve it from the beginning of using of Arch by me.
I'm not so sure this issue is software-related only because in my case it seems the laptop screen enters power-saving mode (10-min timeout) on its own without any events logged (as shown by dmesg) so my next thought was OK, I'm going to get rid of this issue disabling the screen power-saving timeout in the BIOS and set it to never power down or something like that and from then on managing power mode manually; ie: when I want to power down I will just use systemctl suspend/hibernate which work fine ... problem is: there are no related options in my BIOS for such timeout.
The only timeouts I have are in /etc/systemd/logind.conf set to 30min (#IdleActionSec) (commented) by default so these are not in effect because the screens goes blank after 10m which is less than the (default) 30m in logind. Maybe setting loggind to 9m (un-commented) to catch the event before the machine-default one ?
    IdleActionSec=9min
    IdleAction=suspend
Will check it and report back.

  • MB screen goes blk then comes back. A1181 model - inverter? LCD?

    hello
I have got a late 2006 A1181 black MB. It works fine..until recently over these past few months the screen goes black...then it comes to life again.
If I turn it on....it could sometimes be black...then I leave it and after a few mins it comes back to life.
Yet other times, I can power on and its fine.....
Then the other day it flickered so much on/of/on/off....
I have done the resets as suggested online....to no avail.
-you can still see the desktop if you shine a light on the screen when it goes black.
-The screen doesnt flicker if I open and close the laptop lid up and back ....
How do I know if its the inverter or the actual whole entire LCD screen thats failing?
Im in no position to pay  £75 to have it looked at by someone at my local apple retailer.
And yes its still a really good little machine. ...and Im not looking to change it. Just now confused...shall I buy a new LCD or inverter? Ive seen the tutorials online and I think I could do those fixes myself...
Any help and advice would be great, thanks.
    Caroline

So I did a clean install of 10.7.5 and for a day the machine had no issues. Then I used Migration Assistant to import the owner's user account. I logged into their account, deleted the temporary account I made, then rebooted. After that I tested it, and the screen DID go black on wake again.
Based on all this, I'm thinking the problem has to be some random corrupt file. Something possibly sleep related, or possibly display related. I'm going to have to investiage that avenue next. Any ideas what software issues might cause this kind of problem? In other words, what preferences files may be causing it?
