Display dead ?

Hi,
my N900 ran out of power and after a hours (actually i left the device on my desk over night) i recharged the device - but Problem is that it seems the Display is not working or not even starting (not sure which one of this 2
When i turn on the device all i hear is sometimes i little "ping" or so and the display stays black.
But the device is ON because the keyboard lightning works and also i hear the keyboard sound when i press a key (however do not see anything).
I did the basic , battery remove and sim card remove for the while but do fix the problem. Any other chances to get my N900 working or can this only fixed by returning for repair ?
Thanks !

It's real basic, but have you tried the TV out? (cable should've come with the phone)
To be fair, even if the OS was broken, the display should still light up when you power the device on.
This sounds like the not completely uncommon loose ribbon cable.. If so, it should be relatively easy for a nokia technician to fix..

  • Display dead until splash screen

Kind of an odd problem. For a while the display would not work at all.
Zapped PRAM, Reset, NVRAM, removed ram upgrade and Airport card, no change.
I finally try and boot from the recovery CD's and amazingly, it works again.
Now, it works once it gets inside the GUI. But, from the startup chime to the "Starting Mac OSX" screen, it's dead. I dont get any video at all until I get that blue splash screen. No single user, no verbose boot, no grey boot screen with the apple.
I can boot into OF and Single User modes, and they work, I just get no video at all.
If anyone has an idea of what I can do about it, I'd appreciate a pointer, I'm pretty stuck right now.

  • Thunderbolt Display "dead" after firmware upgrade to Version 1.2

    Hi,
I just run the Thunderbolt F/W update to 1.2 as offered by the AppStore Update. I have a 2014 MacPro with 2 Displays connected. In good faith I just confirmed to apply the update without much reading the fine print. The F/W update brought the system to a complete standstill. After 2 hours of waiting in the boot screen, I rebooted the system manually (5 secs power button). One of the Thunderbolt displays first just flickered, then decided to completely die. The System report says: unknown device in the Thunderbolt section. The 2nd display hasn't been updated during this procedure.
How can the F/W of the 'dead' display be re-installed? I also tried to connect it to a MacBook pro. Same result. The display is entirely black.
Any help or suggestion is much appreciated. Thanks!

Put me on the list as well.
I've had this TB display for two years and have had no issue with it. Clicked OK on the firmware prompt and now I have a $1000 paperweight/laptop charger.
    What I have tried:
Reset SMC and NVRAM on my MBP.
Unplugged the display from power and all peripherals and let it sit for ~24 hours before trying again.
Downloaded the firmware installer from Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update v1.2. It tells me that no thunderbolt display is connected.
So far nothing has produced a result.
System report shows an unknown device on the TB port.
A used logic board for the display is around USD$220 on ebay.
I really wish I had not attempted to install the firmware now.

  • Display dead, then comes back to life- can Nvidia issue be intermittent?

I have a MacBook Pro MA896LL (Core 2 Duo Santa Rosa) that I use with an external display most of the time.
Rebooted a few days ago only to see nothing- sleep light on the computer was solid but laptop and external displays were blank. Disconnected external display and power-cycled, same thing- discovered that the computer is actually on but just no video (can boot in firewire mode, etc.). Tried the usually stuff, reset PRAM, SMC, left it off for a while, nothing. Figured I must have the dead Nvidia card issue.
Anyway, booted it back up today in Firewire mode to finish backing it up, and lo and behold, the display is working again!
Question- can the Nvidia issue be intermittent, or is it just working or not?
I have AppleCare, but repairs unfortunately involve me flying to Miami and hanging around for a few days while they repair it, and I'd hate to go and then they tell me it is not that problem, only to return home and have it again.
    thanx

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I think that the NVIDIA problem can be intermittent, and the fact that the external display was also blank does indicate the graphics card.
While the display is working, you might try running the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test and see if you get anything in the way of an error code.
Also, call Apple on the telephone to report the problem and to get a case number. Explain that the problem seems to be intermittent, and for that reason you would prefer not to fly to Miami for the reasons you gave. Ask if there is an AASP in your area that could do a diagnostic test. Apple has some sort of special procedure for testing for the NVIDIA issue, and it may be that someone local can do this for you.
If you get any results on the AHT or any other diagnostic test that would confirm the problem, then you can arrange to have the repair done at your convenience.
In the meantime, you might keep a log of when the problem occurs. For example, the chip may work fine when the computer has been off a while and is cold, but the problem might occur when the computer has been on a while, and maybe with intensive processor activity. If you can discover any conditions which will reliably cause the problem to occur, you will be much more successful at showing it to someone at Apple.
    Good luck!

  • 24" Apple Display Dead

  • Macbook display dead

My late 2011 macbook pro display appears to be dead. The computer does turn on and works with an external thunderbolt display. I already tried to reset PRAM, NVRAM, SMC several times (with and without removing the battery).
Also I installed the gfxcardstatus software and the internal display option can't be selected.

You're right; it sounds broken. You will need to get it diagnosed and fixed at an authorised service provider or Apple Retail Store.

  • G4 17 Display dead 4th time

I just got my PB G4 17 back from Apple repair on Friday for 2nd Display and logic board and it's dead again on Thurs.

    PowerBook G4 17   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I find you need to have the external display connected and ON when you start the computer. That way, the computer polls the display and defects its possible resolutions. Also, the monitor need MultiSync technology. Many older monitors intended for PCs don't have that ability.

  • Droid Display Dead, but keyboard lights up....Disgusted

I bought the Droid when it first came out for my son last christmas (Dec 15, 2010 to be exact) He was using it in the car as a GPS and when he got home and brought the phone in, the display was dead.  Called Verizon and went to the store, they looked at it and said NOPE, nothing we can do....it was 9 days after the warranty, the phone is beat up. They didn't even have a technician look at it. Well we do have phones for use, not to just look at.  Anyone else having display problems, now no phone, and I had no insurance.  2 year plans are the worst that is all I can say!

I just experienced a very similar problem as I was heading to work. My Droid was fully charged once I got in to work I pressed the power button to turn on the screen and make a call but nothing appeared on the screen, the menu, back button, search button lit up but nothing on the screen. I took out the battery waited about a half hour put it back in tried to turn it on and again the screen remained black, nothing appeared on the screen. I even tried a hard reset and that too resulted in a blank screen.
Once my shift is over I will call customer service when they open and see what happens.
I'm even thinking about reverting back to the flip phone and stay away from smartphones, seems too much of a pain.

  • IMac G4 display dead

Just adding to a long line of postings here and elsewhere on the net. My iMac G4 screen went dead a week ago, Apple says its the logic board and would cost $650 to repair, which they don't recommend I spend on a 3 year old iMac. With new iMacs at $1,289 I agree that's not a good investment but I should not have this problem. With the large number of failures of the display Apple should do something. I did not have an extended warranty but even if I had it would have ran out about a month ago. I have been buying Macs for over 20 years, my first was the 512K model and until the G4 these products never let me down. It seems however that the Macs are going the way of the iPods when it comes to quality and now that the processors are intel I'm not sure I should continue to buy Macs. For now I purchased an external 19" flat panel display (~$450 less than the repair costs) so I can try to get a year or two more out of my G4. Sure miss the flexibility of movement of the internal display, what a shame.
Does anyone think that Apple will do something about this?

I'm not certain which external (third-party) or aftermarket displays would be
best for your purposes; but keep in mind the highest resolution supported
by your computer's video card is what that external can run at; no more
than that in the native support in OSX. There are a few applications that
may help run a higher resolution (non-native) but if you have hardware
issues, it is best to try to sort out the service situation to see what kind
of followup testing they can do regarding this repair that didn't fix it right.
You have a limited time to get any adjustments or re-repairs on a machine
no longer under a full warranty; and if their "repair" didn't fix it, seems to me
there should be a higher authority or another procedure you could try to get
some further action on this remaining issue; instead of letting them throw
parts at it. There well may be a video card/logic board problem, or a lesser
evil involved in fixing this. Did they replace the wire harness in the chrome
arm, or test it for bad wires? That could also be at fault.
Sorry you've had some unhappy experiences with this issue; and
hopefully something can be done that won't cost alot (more.)
Best of luck in this matter!

  • Internal display dead, external display works fine

    Hi,
I left my machine unplugged over the summer. When I came back, the internal display was dark.
The machine was making all the right noises at startup, and the Caps Lock key worked, and I could make it beep louder and softer with the volume F-keys, so I hooked it up to an external monitor. It works perfectly with the external monitor.
I went through the troubleshooting procedures - zap the pram, reset the power manager, boot from a CD - no video on the internal display.
While connected to the external monitor, I ran the System Information program and looked for the internal display device. It wasn't there! Only the external one shows up.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
I can post screenshots or System Information reports if anyone wants them.
    Thanks,
    Doug

Someone took it off my hands. They're going to use it with an external display.
    Thanks all!

  • 10.10.1 display dead

    Hi,
I've just upgraded my newish (4 months old) MacPro (can't get speck right now as its restoring from time machine) with thunderbolt cinema display to 10.10.1 in order to solve the wifi problem the previous version had and my display output is ... well there is a mouse pointer and the rest of the screen is blank.
I've restored from a time machine backup twice now (with out any data loss..hoorah) and  I have recently updated the firmware for my cinema display.
Any one else having this problem ?
Is there an easy fix that doesn't involve waiting 2h for a time machine restore ?
    Any help would be appreciated
Seems the hardware is ok as the first time this happened I managed to get the system back up from a time machine backup form 4.30 am this morning.
    Best
    Simon

So much for this fix - forgot to turn off autoupdate and today my mac is broken again.
Im too busy for this nonsense and it is exactly the reason why i stopped using PCs i.e. they were constantly broken and I was constantly fixing them.
I expect better from a new 3 grand computer running a new, grands worth of display.
Is having this rig work when I turn it on an unreasonable expectation ?
If it isn't I'm obviously in the wrong place.

  • T440s - display dead after two months.

Very discouraging.  I switched from System76's offerings to Thinkpads, and their higher prices, specifically because of component and build quality.  I handled this machine with delicate reverence ever since receiving it.
I did not purchase extended coverage/warranty for this laptop.  Must I send it in to IBM or can I take it to a local warranty service provider?  Will I have to pay for parts, or labor, for this?

Thanks, I tried a local service provider but he did not feel up to the task of diagnosing the issue since I have Linux installed.  I will send it in for service.
I am highly apprehensive that my display - which I have been happy with, and believe to be an AUO non-touch IPS display - will be replaced with an LG, widely reputed to be of inferior quality.  Is there any way I can be assured that I will receive the same kind of AUO display if/when it's replaced?

i often buy from okshop.com , so you can try .... mark..mark ...lol...

it should be covered by warranty, unless there is cracks to the LCD or other signs of user damage.
Whether you send to the depot or take it to repair service provider depends on warranty type.

  • How can I know if a Cinema Display 22 inch ADC is dead ?

    Hi,
I bought a 22 inch ADC Cinema Display for my PowerMac G4/400 (Gigabit Ethernet). I upgraded the PowerMac with an ATI Radeon 7500 graphic card and a Sonnet 1Ghz processor. I'm running 10.4.9 and have the latest ATI driver for the card.
When I plugged the ADC cable, the computer started but the display didn't light up. All lights are off and the USB ports are not powered. If I unplug he PowerMac, plug the display and plug the PowerMac back, I can't start it using the power button (on the display neither).
I checked and rechecked my PowerMac and Cinema display specs and requirements and everything should be compatible. Is my Cinema Display dead ? How can I know for sure ? Are there any drivers I must install ?

I'm having a similar problem, only it's recurring on several Cinema Display monitors on different machines.
One thing we have been able to figure out is that the problem appears to be the power brick. By repeatedly unplugging and wiggling the power cord at the brick, the monitor will eventually come back on... until you restart it.
This is VERY frustrating for such expensive monitors (not to mention being Apple products). I suspect the problem lies with faulty power bricks, and I'll be following up with Applecare to see what they have to say about it.
