Display dims before sleep, no matter the setting

My MacBook will dim its screen (ie: reduce brightness) after about 10 seconds of idle time. I've read to stop this you need to uncheck the "dim display before sleep" checkbox under energy saver preferences. I've done this for both the power adapter and batery settings, but the display still dims! It will dim when running from the batery or the power adapter. It makes watching DVD's useless.
Has anyone else seen this? I find it annoying, but it's driving my wife crazy.

One option to try would be to change the login settings so that you are not automatically logged in when you start up to the computer. After you make this change, log out, log back in, toggle that display sleep setting on then back off and check the result.
Something else that might be worth a try...
First, I'm not sure what preferences, if any, will need to be reset after this. Also, I have not done this and do not know the result. As always, backup your stuff.
1. Go to the folder ./Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration (not your Library folder but the one at the root level of your hard disk).
2. Drag the file named com.apple.PowerManagement.plist to the trash. You will be prompted to enter your admin password when you do this.
3. Restart.

iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim
    Symptoms
In rare instances, the setting to turn on Wi-Fi on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch may appear grayed out or dim. You may see the following when you tap Settings > Wi-Fi.
If this occurs, you can't turn Wi-Fi on, and when you try to turn Wi-Fi on, your device won't respond. If you're using iOS 7, Wi-Fi may appear to turn on and off in Control Center, but Wi-Fi won't respond.
    Resolution
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
    Restart your iOS device.
Make sure that airplane mode is off by tapping Settings > Airplane Mode.
Reset the network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings.
Make sure that your device is using the latest software. To do so, connect your device to your computer and check for updates in iTunes.
If you still can't turn Wi-Fi on, please contact Apple for support and service options. If you can turn Wi-Fi on but are experiencing other issues with Wi-Fi, please see these steps.

    Hi jenwood2!
It seems like the best way to do this would be to make a playlist from just the one song that you want listen to while falling asleep. Our iPad User Guide explains exactly how to do this:
    manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/ipad_user_guide.pdf
And I have echoed the relevant information here:
Create a playlist: View Playlists, tap New near the top of the screen, then enter and save a name. Select songs and videos to include, then tap Done.
Take care, and thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.

  • Screen dimming before sleep

No matter how many times I check and uncheck the option to "reduce brightness before sleep" I find that a few days later the screen starts dimming again. When I go to see if the option is unchecked like it should be, it always is!! Anyone else having this problem?

Note that the half-dimming is there for a purpose. The florescent tubelets that illuminate your LCD are very expensive. the half-dimming is there to extend their life, and yet provide near-instant illumination if the computer detects activity by the user.
Admittedly, it would be nice if this was configurable by the user, but that is the reason the half-dimming is there.

  • Display Dims before boot and after shutdown are complete

This is probably a stupid question but a while back I clicked on an option to have my display dim during the shutdown process and stay dim until it was completely booted.
I would like to turn this off but I can't find where the option was.  I've checked the device manager, BIOS, standard and advanced display settings the Windows and lenovo power settings with no luck.
I have a thinkpad W500 running Windows 7 Pro 4gb of ram with a recent upgrade in hard drive to a 750 gb WD black series drive.  I am also running IE9 which I see has some compatibility issues so I hope I can post this.
    Thanks

  • My iPhone5 won't automatically go to sleep, where is the setting?

My iPhone5 will not go to sleep unless I press the button at the top.  Otherwise, it remains on, which is draining the battery prematurely.  Is there something wrong with it or is it a setting?  I've looked all over and can't find anything in the settings.

That was it, thank you SO much!  I saw the "auto lock" function, but did not put that together with what I was looking for.  I didn't think of it as a "locking" problem.  Again, a huge thank you!

  • Display won't sleep after being in suspend once.

When rebooting the computer, the display sleeps after set interval and can manually be put to sleep using shift+ctrl+eject.
However if the computer goes to sleep or I myself close the lid to make it sleep, the display won't sleep again.
The display won't sleep after set interval in power settings and when I press shift+ctrl+eject the keyboard backlit turns off but the screen stays on.
The only way to make it sleep is to close the lid.
I have tried resetting SMC and NVRAM but to no avail.
I have the first generation aluminium macbook.
Does anyone else have this problem?
I have had this problem both in 10.6 and 10.8

  • Does anyone have a PPC mini that goes to sleep based on the timer?

Problem is that my mini won't go into sleep mode per the set minutes on the system preferences energy pane. I've searched and read the other posts on this.
Configuration is PPC mini, Apple USB keyboard, Microsoft intellimouse, and Eizo CRT display. No bluetooth or other hardware. Latest Microsoft mac mouse driver (had same issue without current Microsoft driver). Hardware test doesn't show any problems, and there's nothing to indicate any hardware issues. Latest OS X update was done with the combo updater. Have reset the power management unit (PMU). Have not called Apple yet.
With the sleep settings set on the energy saver pane, I've tried detaching the keyboard and mouse, together and individually, and that didn't change anything. What happens is that the display will shut off at the appointed time, however, the mini won't enter itself into sleep mode. I can manually put it to sleep by clicking blue apple, sleep or by pushing the power button.
I'm scratching my head on this.....so I don't take it personally, does anyone have a mini that does go into sleep as scheduled? Appreciate any suggestions on anything else to look at.

    Doug,
I had already started along that path, by removing the Microsoft mouse driver (which didn't fix the problem). However, starting the system in safe mode was a good baseline, as it went to sleep as it should - confirming a software-related issue.
I figured it would actually be easiest to shoot this bug by starting from scratch with an erase and install. After each tweak (ie, turn firewall on), software add (ie, clamXav), or update to the system, I tested it's sleep ability. And I found the bug/issue.....checking 'enable firewall logging' under the advanced options on the firewall tab, in the sharing preferences pane. No kidding. Stealth mode and UDP can be checked, just not firewall logging. Dunno why, however, the world is now at peace, able to sleep as needed.

  • Strange Shutdown Before Sleep & Airport Network Corruption

I'm having a very odd problem and I can't seem to find any resolve. Hopefully someone can provide some kind of insight.
I have a PowerBook G4 1.5GHz running OS X 10.5.6. I connect to OS X Server when at the office. I've owned the machine since August 2005 and it's no longer under warranty. I received a replacement battery from Apple for my original battery when it was recalled. The replacement battery was conditioned upon receiving it but it has never had the same kind of life as the original battery that came with the PowerBook, although it definitely runs cooler.
I didn't notice any issues running under Tiger and have only noticed that problems began under one of the Leopard updates, although not exactly sure which one it started under.
The issue seems to be largely with the system not going to sleep when on low battery, but instead, simply shutting itself down. I get the low battery warning, but if I just let it go, the system will eventually shut down without warning. It has occasionally shut down with about 20% battery life left on the power reading in the menu bar.
When I connect a power source and start the computer back up, the date has been reset, indicating that the machine has died completely.
Here's the really strange part. The last wireless network I was connected to seems to now be corrupt and I have to remove it from my Airport preferred networks and add it fresh. It's as if the password is not the same and it prompts me for the password again, it doesn't keep it saved and I have to enter it every time I connect to that network.
For the shut down before sleeping part and the clock resetting, is it just that the battery on the logic board needs to be replaced because it's dead?
On the shutting down before sleeping issue, is anyone else having this same problem?
As for the Airport corruption, does anyone have any ideas?

I am having the same problem - I have 20% battery and then the computer shuts downs and when I restart the date & time have been reset. However, I do not have the airport corruption issue. Anyone know what's going on? I tried to update my battery using the "PB Battery Updater" but that program quits unexpectedly. I'm not sure what else to try...

    BUMP.
I actually showed this to Apple geniuses when I took my computer to the apple store, and it's still here. In console it says:
    kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: -128
I don't know if that's related or not, but maybe helps?

  • Turn off the display but prevent sleep

    Hello,
I am new to the Mac OS system and am facing a difficulty.
I want to keep my macbook running through the night downloading the updates, however I want the display to be off. For this I have used apps like caffeine and no sleep and have also modified the system preferences. But still whenever I turn off my display, after some time the macbook goes to sleep and all my downloads and updates are paused.
Is there any workaround which allows me to turn off the display without letting the mac to go to sleep ??

Have you tried the energy saving setting that controls the hard drive sleep, and set it to Never?
Then it won't matter the minutes display is set to wait until sleep, so long as it's not also never.
If there is a problem with this not working, you may check into an SMC reset; or perhaps also
the NVRAM/PRAM, as one or both may be in control over some aspect of this (dys)function.
•Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    •About NVRAM and PRAM
There may be other issues with the later versions Mavericks energy saver selections; in the
older systems the matter was refined and less a problem. Your mileage may vary.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How to force the display to sleep, while keeping the computer running?

I'm running some compression and transcoding programs on my iMac G5 (iSight) that keeps the CPU at 100% for hours at a time. My Energy Saver prefernces is set to sleep the display after a few minutes, but never to sleep the computer or the hard disk.
Like I'd expect with such a high CPU load, my computer's screen does not go to sleep.
Is there a program or command line utility that I can run to force my screen to go to sleep, but keep the computer running?
    iMac G5 17" (iSight)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    To put your display only to sleep;
Go to System Preferences, click on 'energy saver', check the 'Put the display to sleep when the computer is inactive for' box, and then set the time. Note; this just puts the display to sleep, not the whole computer. Your hard disk will keep running. I find this much more convienent than putting the computer in 'full sheep'. It wakes up much quicker without some of the hassle some computers display coming up from full sleep.
