Display disaster!

Hi all, I have a major problem with LR though I'm guessing it's not LR's fault. I have two Samsung monitors and if I drag LR from one to the other, after about a second, the image changes significanty in terms of color rendition. On the right monitor there is sufddenly a LOT more red added. I then drag it back to the left monitor and after a second, poof, the red coloring goes away. Aghhh! I hate color rendition and management. I would pay $100,000 to someone who could a) sort it out and b) explain the whole mystical art to me! If I had $100,000.
Can anyone offer any explanation? I am using Windows 7 Personal, 64bit and have 2 Samsung monitors and they were calibrated with a Spyder a month or so ago but those profiles are now out of date.
Thanks for any help you can offer before I go totally bald with frustration!

Let me say first of all that I'm up for the $100,000
I have two monitors, both profiled/calibrated.  But they are very different monitors: one is an old Samsung, approximately sRGB colour gamut.  The other is an HP LP2475w, which is wide gamut (approximately Adobe RGB).  I normally run the LR window on the HP, with the second window on the Samsung.  The images look near identical on both (unless there are saturated colours beyond sRGB that the Samsung can't manage).
But if I drag the LR main window from one window to the other, I see what you describe. That is, if the LR window is on the HP (wide gamut) monitor, and I drag it to the narrow gamut Samsung monitor, at first the colours go rather pale, but after a second or so LR realises that it needs to re-render to a different profile, and corrects the display.  Similarly if I drag it back.  But, after it adapts, LR shows the same colours on each monitor.  If that's not the same with you, I would first check that each monitor has a correct profile associated.
What happens if you use both monitors in Lightroom?  That is, display Loupe view on the main monitor (whichever that is) by typing E, then display Loupe view also on the 2nd monitor by typing Shift-E.  If the monitors are profiled and calibrated, it should show the same colours on each.  If you drag the main window to the other monitor (and you might have to type Shift-E again to get the loupe view on the other) you should have swapped the displays, but again still have the same colours on each.
PS if frustration leads to baldness I must be frustrated.
Can I have the $100,000 now please?

  • ICloud disaster destroyed all my Pages work on the iPad!

    I have an IPad 2 with Pages that I have used for months to write business articles and research papers for publication. I have been using iCloud to synch it through a single user account.
    Last week, I was forced to upgrade my iMac to Lion because corrupted account permissions locked me out of all my home folders as well as my two different external drives and even my Time Capsule and Time Machine --- something supposedly impossible. But it all inexplicably happened. It took over a week for assorted sympathetic Apple care specialists and engineers to try to sort it out. The original problem was still never diagnosed or solved. Instead, my hard drive was erased, OSX 10.6 reinstalled, a date back up restored, and then Lion loaded as new.
    As per Apple care instruction, iCloud in Lion was immediately activated on the iMac -- but no document files were ever shared.
    Four days later, after synching my iPad to iCloud, when I next opened Pages I watched in horror as in a mere second more than 30 documents vanished en masse right before my eyes.
    Somehow all these files never got backed up in my iTunes even though I had made several recent saves to the hard drive as well as an iCloud back up!
    And as for the files or even the mobile documents library folder being save in my recent Time Machine back ups, they never were. The back ups contain no iOS Pages text nor any deleted folder files to restore.
    Despite all the Time Machine and iTunes back ups, and despite all the free space on the iPad where I actually did all the work without an internet connection, as soon as I synched they were mysteriously deleted by iCloud.
    Pages on iPad was left empty and blank. Replacing the mobile documents folder on my iMac from a back up did at least managed to provide Pages file some icons with names dates, but they are ghost documents, mere skeleton files that can’t be opened. All my actual text content is now apparently nowhere; lost in Apple’s iCloud ether!
    This is an iPad which for months I used for Pages work without any internet connection, 3G or WiFi, and yet in an instant the iCloud on its own disintegrated everything it contained!  Apple essentially reached down into my device, into my personal property that I own, and without warning, notice, or permission and simply erased all my work; all my personal labor and effort that belonged to me. They essentially committed sabotage and theft.
    I have nothing saved anywhere despite being told how the iCloud was a trustworthy safety net, that Time Machine provided worry free back up, and that saving through iTunes could restore iPad content. Garbage. I did everything right and still got screwed.
    Further…
    In just the past two weeks alone I have suffered: my second iPhone -- a month old replacement for a previous defective iPhone itself only a month old -- experience a “software corruption” that caused it to continuously shut down if unplugged; my iMac and Time Capsule failing; and now this catastrophic iPad disaster.
    If this is not resolved with my fiels returned to me I simply will never use iCloud and I will never trust Apple again.
    I am disgusted and furious beyond words.

    Hi JC,
    My iPad is in a similar state, although I arrived in the bizarro state by a different path.  I am also waiting for the apple experts to get back with me.  I have an iPad 1 with ios 5.1.1 and Pages 1.7.1.
    In the mean time, while I was waiting, I found a way to extract the TEXT from a large Pages document I did not want to lose;  it was the result of many years of notes.  This might save you some time instead of sifting through the raw index.db.
    The index.db file is a sqlite3 file.  If you are on mac you can open it from a terminal with the command:
    sqlite3 index.db.
    I suggest you move the file out of the iTunes directory before you start working with it, just in case something unexpected happens, you don't want to lose the only copy of the data you are trying to recover.
    1) Once the file is open via 'sqlite3 index.db' from a terminal command line, type ".tables" at the 'sqlite>" prompt and press enter.  It should show five tables:
    cullingState
    dataStates
    document
    objects
    relationships
    2) The file with your data is named dataStates, but it has many records in it.  I found my data by looking for the "largest" record.  Let me explain.  There are two fields in the dataStates table:
    identifier
    state
    Your data is stored in the 'state' field and it's data type is 'blob'. (I know that sounds stupid, but stick with me.)
    3) I found the largest record by typing  this query at the 'sqlite>' prompt:
    select identifier, length(state) from dataStates order by length(state) asc;
    My 'dataStates' table had 599 records, so many lines fly by, but the largest state field is at the bottom of the list with it's identifier.  Mine was:
    3|173212
    That identified a dataStates record with identifier '3' and 173,212 bytes of data in the 'state' field. Most of the bytes where printable ascii.  It WAS the text of my original Pages document.
    DISCLAIMER:  This method does not retrieve ANY formatting, pagination, tables bullets or numbering, images or other document rendering information.  It is just the TEXT.
    4)  Type this SQL command at the 'sqlite>' prompt to pull out the blob data:
    select hex(state) from dataStates where identifier=X;
    In my case the identifier was 3 so MY command was:
    select hex(state) from dataStates where identifier=3;
    5) Now is when the funs begins.   The large block of gibberish is 'ascii encoded binary' brought to you courtesy of the hex function.
    To store it in a file, use the the sqlite3 '.output' command and type the preceding sql select.  Like the following:
    .output binacii.txt
    select hex(state) from dataStates where identifier=3;
    .output stdout
    This takes the large block of 'binary encoded ascii' and writes it to file named 'binascii.txt' rather than displaying it in the terminal window.  After the select statement ends, the output is switched back to the terminal window (stdout).    The 'binascii.txt' file is located in the same folder/directory that was the current directory when you launched the sqlite3 command.
    6) I moved my 'binascii.txt' file to a windows computer at this point and wrote a simple conversion routine to decode the 'ascii coded binary' into something usable with a work processor.  In "ascii coded binary", each 8-bit byte of data is encoded as two ascii characters, it enables sending binary data via the internet, etc, similar to uuencode, but NOT the same.
    7) Here is a small python program to convert the 'binascii.txt' file to the text from your Pages document on a Mac:
    import sys
    p = sys.stdin.read()
    s = []
    for location in range(0, len(p), 2):
       value = int(p[location:location+2], 16)
       if value >=32 and value <=126 or value==10:
           s.append(chr(value))
    sys.stdout.write(''.join(s))
    8) (NOTE: The last line has two single quotes (') not a double quote (")). I am assuming at this point that you know how to create a text file using a terminal window.   Add the python script to a text file, make sure you honor the indentations!  I named my python file 'convert.py'.  To use the python script, type the following command:
    cat binascii.txt | python convert.py > your.txt
    This method also assumes that the files 'binascii.txt', 'convert.py' and 'your.txt' are all in the same folder/directory.
    9) The resulting file, 'your.txt' can be opened by Word or Pages (you can name the file 'your.txt' to whatever you want).  In my case, I opened the file 'your.txt' with MS Word.  It had some rudimentary formatting in the form of paragraph breaks, single lines, some headings etc.  I did lose the data stored in tables, although I expect the text is still lurking somewhere in the index.db file.
    There were some ascii characters that were not part of my original document, but they were pretty easy to find and remove.  In my case the errant ascii characters were outside my document's large text block.   Also numbered and bulleted blocks run together.  Again the formatting information is still buried within the index.db file.
    The iOS Pages file format is more cryptic than the simple zip/XML format from the desktop OS X version of Pages.
    Hope this helps a little, although you seem to be OK with the approach of sifting through the raw index.db file.  The Pages document  I wanted to recover was 63 pages long and manually sifting through all the crap in the index.db  drove me on a quest to find the real text within the index.db file, which i found.
    Sorry for the length of this post,
    Cheers

  • IOS7 Disaster for Music Collectors

    I just installed iOS 7 on my iPhone and began playing around. I’m sure most of the reaction to it in the coming days will focus on the look and feel. But the first thing I noticed is that the Music app is an absolute disaster for people who like music. If your music collection consists of a dozen Greatest Hits albums you bought in college, you’ll probably be fine. Anyone else should stay as far away as possible.
    Here’s the first problem: The “Artist” and “Album” views display large thumbnails of album art, which means only four entries are visible per screen. OK, there’s a hint of a fifth if you look closely
    Like I said: Fine if you have a dozen or so albums in your collection. I have about 1,500 artists and 7,200 albums and over 100,000 songs. Scrolling through them just got much, much more difficult. Thanks, Apple!
    The second problem is worse. When you tap on an artist, the app takes you to all that artist’s albums (good) … but each album is expanded to show the songs it contains:
    So in order to scroll through an artist’s albums, you have to scroll past every song in every album. Again, not a problem for tiny music collections. But if you have several albums by a given artist, it quickly becomes annoying. It took me seven thumb-swipes to scroll through the 21 albums by Radiohead in my collection. The 500+ Pearl Jam albums? COMPLETELY UN-browsable.
    Speaking of which: It took a whopping 22 seconds from tapping on “Pearl Jam” to getting a list of Pearl Jam albums. That’s 22 seconds of the iPhone just sitting there, seemingly unresponsive. And that’s on an iPhone 5. Now, I have more than 500 Pearl Jam albums; that’s obviously not typical. But there’s a noticeable, if slight, lag when tapping on an artist with 15 or 20 albums. And, of course, the artists whose work you have the most of are the very artists you’re going to select most frequently, so those lags aren’t going to be an occasional thing. Not to mention I spent the better part of a YEAR organizing my music for itunes, and with a click of a button you change it all up.
    All of this adds up to a Music app that is absolutely horrible for people who like music. Just a terrible user experience.
    What’s really stunning about this is that a lot of people came to the Apple world via the iPod and iTunes. I’m one of them. And over the last few years, Apple has steadily been making the user experience more and more miserable for people who like music. iTunes is a bloated, glitchy, terrible trainwreck of a program that -- when it works at all -- seems to make it harder to do what you want with your music with each new update. Mobile device hard drive space has stagnated at a level too small to house large collections. And the Music app in iOS 7 is the clearest indication yet that Apple just does not give a **** about people who have more than a couple hundred songs in their library. Which is bizarre, given that selling music is a pretty big part of Apple’s business.
    It seems increasingly obvious than what will end up driving me away is the escalating awfulness of Apple’s music apps on both OS X and iOS.
    UPDATE: I’ve tried several third-party music apps looking for a replacement for Apple’s built-in app. Thanks to everyone who suggested alternatives in the comments and on Twitter … none of which were quite right. But I may have finally found something that will work: Audyssey.
    Audyssey is marketed primarily as providing “professional audio technologies to optimize your music for your headphones” -- you can tell the app what headphones you’re using, and it will optimize audio playback to fit them. I haven’t spent any time playing around with that feature, so I can’t comment on its efficacy. But as a way of browsing and playing my iPhone’s music library, it’s far better than Apple’s app. Browsing by artist displays 10 artists per screen, more than twice as many as you see in the Apple app:
    Browsing by Album shows 8 albums per screen, again more than twice as many as you get in the Apple app. Selecting an Artist containing 20-25 albums results in no noticeable lag. (There is about a 2-3 second lag when I select Bruce Springsteen, which is mildly irritating, but far better than the 22 seconds Apple’s own app requires to bring up a list of albums.) Most importantly: Once you select an artist, you get a list of albums by that artist -- and only the albums, not every song each album contains. This allows you to easily browse through artists for whom you may have large collections. Want to see what songs are on an album? Just tap the album name, and you’ll go to a new screen. Perfect. Simple. Exactly the way things should work.
    Audyssey gives you immediate access to all of the songs on your iPhone (including iTunes Match files that are stored in the cloud but not locally), with all the basic controls -- play/pause/repeat/shuffle/forward/back/etc. Album art & basic controls appear on your phone’s lock screen when appropriate. You have full access to your iTunes playlists. If there’s a way to add songs to playlists or create playlists within the app, I haven’t found it. That doesn’t bother me at all -- I rarely if ever create playlists on my mobile devices.
    The one flaw that I’ve encountered is that if a song is in the cloud but not stored on the device itself, Audyssey can stream the song -- but can’t do so in the background, so if you close the app while such a song is playing, it will pause. That’s annoying, but won’t affect you at all unless you use iTunes Match. And if you’re planning on listening to several songs that are stored in the iTunes Match cloud (a whole album or playlist, for example) you can always use the built-in Apple Music app to download the songs first, then play them in Audyssey. Or, of course, you could just play them in the Apple app -- Audyssey is fine as a music player, but then so is the Apple app. Where Audyssey really shines is in browsing your library. I’ve only been playing with it for a few minutes, so it may turn out to be buggy (its responsiveness even when browsing a pretty large library is a good sign on that front) or to have some drawback I haven’t yet encountered, but for now it will be my default music player.
    Another problem in the new IOS 7 music app: Once you select an artist, that artist’s albums are not sorted alphabetically. They’re sorted, as best as I can tell, by release date. So if you have, say, 20 Rolling Stones albums and want to listen to Some Girls, not only do you have to scroll through every song contained on every album that is listed before Some Girls before you get to the album you want, but you also can’t speed the process along by swiping as quickly as you can until you get to albums beginning with “S.”
    Instead, you have to remember that Some Girls came out in 1978, so it’s between It’s Only Rock n Roll (1974) and Emotional Rescue (1980). Unless of course you have something from Black and Blue (1976), which you probably don’t -- but, really, who can remember? So, yeah, Some Girls will be listed after It’s Only Rock n Roll, and 3-4 albums after Sticky Fingers (1971). Right where you’d expect it -- assuming, of course, that you happen to remember the chronology of album releases by every artist in your entire music library.
    Unless, that is, you don’t have release date included for every song and every album in your library (and who does?) in which case the album you’re looking for is … who the **** knows, really?
    Oh, and the whole chronological order thing only works if all your albums have release-date metadata (unlikely) and if the release date metadata reflects the album’s original release date For example: Let It Bleed was originally released in 1969, but on my phone the Music app lists it after Flashpoint (originally released in 1991) because my copy of Let It Bleed is apparently a re-issue from 2005. And Flashpoint is listed after Stripped, originally released in 1995, for similar reasons. And so on. As a result, the albums are listed in no real order whatsoever. You’re just going to have to scroll through the whole mess song by song.
    Don’t get me started on the Live shows that I spent months and months and months arranging so the appear in chrononlogical order AFTER the studio albums… now they are just thrown in between studio albums, and most of them are 25+ songs, so you scroll for literally 10 minutes or more trying to find an album… oh well, im at my destination, and I did not listen to any songs, Thanks Apple
    In short: This is a terrible app. Just awful.

    After upgrading since around 2002, and becoming paranoid after losing 65 songs, I went to great lengths to make sure that I had back-ups of all music, sometimes in two or three places.
    After a harddrive crash (which is NEVER a matter of IF, but ALWAYS a matter of WHEN), I recovered all music and imported it into iTunes 10.X.X. Then I bought an iPhone 5 and needed to upgrade to iTunes 11.X.X.
    What a freaking disaster. Mos of my 1486 songs were duplicated from 4-8 times.
    The reason I write all this is to say that MediaMonkey took days of work deduplicating my songs, and made it about 2 days.
    If you did not check out MediaMonkey, it might be worth a look, because it seemed to provide a nice front-end for iTunes collections, especially those which contained 100,000s of tunes. ALSO supports DNLA in case you have upper end audio equipment, and 10 common codecs are included for an additional 10 bucks when you buy the 30 dollar program.
    Just my 2 cents.
    BTW - I agree, that ever since iTunes 4.X.X, it seems that Apple designers are driven by making it painful for serious users to easily and effectively use iTunes. I am ready to move completely away from Apple and utilize Amazon Cloud which my music-minded son-in-law has been using almost since its inception - and he is pretty much an Apple fanboy - but one with hundreds of thousands of songs...
    Apple get your **** together - or we will vote with our feet (and dollars).

  • 24' Cinema Display with Dead Pixel

    I just exchanged an LED Cinema Display under AppleCare for the blinking/cord problem. Got the new one set up and see that it has a dead pixel. Is there a fix for these, especially being brand new, or do I have to exchange this one too?
    Running tests it is very visible on a black background, then blue, and slightly on a green background. Red and white backgrounds make it so that the pixel is not a visible problem.

    When I chose my LED Display, I refused two monitors because of dead pixels (green pixels on full filled white background). All of them I tried to order in on-line shops.
    When I found out that Apple use LG panels for the LED Display and I understood that I have to go to the off-line shop and choose the display by myselfl. I met 2 years ago with usual LG TFT displays on my work - they all had dead pixels. (IMHO, LG is not good).
    I came to one shop and there were 2 Apple LED displays - one at the exposition and one in the storehouse. Of course I wanted new one from storehouse and let manager know beforehand about not going to buy if dead pixels. He brought up the display from storehouse, unpacked, plugged and I personally start to check. I changed the background to whole white and pointed into two green pixels. "***", - I said to the manager - couldn't believe that the display costs crazy money (in Ukraine - $1400-1500) and everyone with dead pixels!
    I also have 20" NEC display with perfect IPS panel that I bought 3 years ago for $800. And I should leave the buying of the Apple LED Display and back to my favourite and proven NEC it could be the right decision as you'll see below .
    But the manager offer me to check the exhibition example - he assured me that exhibition one is also absolutely new and stood only 5 days in the shop. We plug it, set the background to white and ... "O, miracle! No dead pixels! After three checked displays! Can't belive!" - and this one was really total perfect.
    So I forgot about to buy new NEC instead of Apple display. Brought Apple LED Display to home, connected to my brand new MBP 13, compared to my old NEC - everythnig was perfect, colors and overall picture are better than old NEC.
    I was happy ... BUT JUST FOR ONE WEEK! It started to blink/flash/blackout - this is the known problem as I found out later: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1902288&tstart=0
    I'm very disappointed because I realize that if I give it for guarantee service and they offer me to change it - I'm sure that I'll got the display with dead pixels and I don't want it! So I hope that it the software/firmware trouble and it'll be fixed in the next MacOS update. If no - it'll be the disaster because I'll not be able to return the display and give my money back from the one hand (under Ukrainian laws the money back period of goods is 14 days), and I don't want to give the guarantee replacement with dead pixels!
    Sorry for large text I had to to unburden myself!

  • Video Display Problems with Flex Builder 2

    I am currently trying out the Flex Builder 30-day trial and
    have been having problems running the software.
    System info:
    FB 2.0.1
    Dell Latittude D820 running WinXP
    NVIDIA Quadro NVS 120M Video Card
    When I first installed it, my display turned to garbage and I
    had to reboot my machine to get it to a usable state. Someone
    suggested changing my display properties and see if it helped. When
    I tried 768X1024 with 8-bit color it worked. Once I installed it, I
    changed them back to 1920X1200 32-bit. Everything seemed to work
    fine until I started getting into some more complicated tutorials.
    My display crashed and looked similar to what I saw before. I
    updated to the latest NVIDIA driver from Dell. No help. I then
    tried the Windows Troubleshooting. When I turned my hardware
    acceleration to None, it started working again. There are some
    weird display issues with menu buttons and I can't launch my Nvdia
    software.
    Is there a better solution to this? Has anyone had this
    problem? I'm not so sure I'll purchase the software with this many
    problems.
    Thanks,

Luckiliy I have plenty of Big fast firewire drives around so I'm imaging the corrupt drive and going to run the Hitachi tool on it via a WINDOZE Thinkpad. Then a combination of clean install of 10.5.x and a migration assisted restore should do it.
    I'm really not very happy though! My Time machine image did not restore and the disk repair did not work. I have a corrupted asl.DB ( the log file for Apple System Logs) and the mac won't boot from its internal drive.
    I'll post the resolution here as it happens I'm at hour Disaster + 24 so I'm really cranky!
    I suggest If you have a G4 Power Book you resist the temptation to install the video update.

  • Belle is a disaster for the E6: how to move on?

    Many and perhaps most who upgraded to Belle did so because the phone prompted them to perform updates. It is considered to be the responsible thing to do. As with PC's; don't skip updates, it may harm your computer or data.
    There was never any warning displayed as to the impact of the upgrade. For example a reduction in available screen, reduced usefulness or widgets or reduced function of the D-pad, were never mentioned. That was negligent. A backup was made during the upgrade process - giving the false impression that the previous version could be restored. That was misleading.
    Nobody could imagine, unless they were regularly checking news and details on developments at Nokia, that their E6 would emerge from the process horrendously defaced and only half functional. Many E6 users use the phone for work and don't follow trends and developments, and can't be expected to do that. Had they been properly informed, they would not have upgraded. They have the right to get back the product they originally bought and used and the assurance that this will not happen again.
    Belle has a ridiculous UI for a business phone, and much reduced functionality compared to Anna. Belle is a disaster specifically for the E6 because the screen is way too small for all the unnecessary eye candy (monstrous widgets) and Belle lacks important functions that Anna had.
    If anyone from Nokia reads this, please respond. Complaining customers are still customers. Complaining customers are more useful than the ones that walk away in silent anger, because you can learn from them.
    As to how to move on: Getting rid of the E6 and trying to forget about it is one thing, but does anyone consider some form of legal action? After all, when you buy something that has properties A, B, and C, and 6 months later the manufacturer single-handedly decides that the product now has properties C, D and E, to all intents and purposes the product is now defective because it lacks properties A and B.
    For example, if the product were a washing machine ("New sleeker user interface, you can now start it by swiping the door, and the water temperature control is gone, it is now 60 Celcius always for everything because 95% of users find that easy"), and no matter what smallprint there is in the warranty, it would be utterly unacceptable.

    @slitchfield: on the mentioned page, it is stated that "Improvements in screen real estate, with slimmer top status bar and optional (in some apps) bottom toolbar, meaning that all phones will have a larger useful display area."
    But on the E6 the bottom toolbar decreases available screen size in most apps, most noticeable in Web browser where the full view has gone. The bottom toolbar is not optional, you can't configure it yourself.
    And: "Homescreen widgets will now come in up to five different sizes (1x1, 2x1, 4x1, 2x2, 4x4) and allow a greater degree of interactivity.", but on the E6 they are in only one size, always with large borders and other visual effects.
    So beware of differences between phones, perhaps some aspects of Belle work differently depending on the type of device.
    "Notes now brings up a white (and AMOLED-unfriendly...) editing screen.": that you can change by switching themes, "Dark Solid for Anna" does a good job. It is a shame that the lines of Notes have gone though.
    When switching themes, I found you have to restart the phone, otherwise the theme doesn't get properly loaded in all apps. Stopping/starting apps is not enough. So when experimenting and loading one theme after another, you may end up with disfunctional combinations of black-on-black and white-on-white, but it may not be due to the last theme. Also you may end up with a good combination that isn't around anymore the next time you restart your phone.

  • DW cs4 not displaying correctly in IE9

    I built a site in DW cs4 it does not display properly in IE9, am I missing code?
    The website works great in Safari, FireFox, Google Chrome and then it goes wackie in IE9 ( and earlier IE)
    Here is the site: www.mexicobeachcharters.com
    Please help.

    Looks quite bad in Firefox with increased text-size.
    This is caused by your liberal use of position:absolute and explicit height values on containers.  For the web, this is a recipe for disaster.  It's much better if you don't use any positioning or height values.  Web pages must be flexible; not rigid.

  • Looks fine in FF and Safari, disaster in IE8

    http://www.jdcdemo.com/d4/index.html
    This site displays as I set it up in FF and Safari for Windows. In IE8, it is a disaster. The menu spacing is doubled and the main image is way down in the page. I'm guessing it is a CSS and/or Doctype problem, but have not figured it out. Can someone help??
    Thanks in advance,
    Joe

    Give your page a valid document type.  As it stands now, you're page is in Quirks Mode which produces unexpected results.
    Modify > Page Properties > Title/Encoding.  Select either HTML or XHTML transitional.
    Also, I'm not sure you need Float:Right on your #mainContent division.

  • Different retina display

    I and my friend have two iPhone 4 and bought in different time. One about in august and the other one in november. I noticed that the display are very different, on the new one I'm able to see black lines between a row of pixels and another one. The effect is a disaster.
    And there is another problem... with this display the degree of view is shorter compared the other one.
    Apple store say that there is no diffences and the display is ok.
    How is possible?
    Another iPhone 4 (bought in november) has same issue.

  • Displaying a subset of records is limiting the information I can show

    Hello All,
    I'm developing my photo gallery's TOC page and when I began, I had lots of data I wanted to display and through the use of lookup tables and the proper logic in my SELECT query, I could show a vertical list of galleries that matched a specific category. With each was listed two sample thumbnails, title, description, model, photographer and make-up artist names. I even was able to set the page title and header to display the proper information.
    An additoinal SELECT query counted the number of galleries in the main table that were relevant to the present query string value.
    Another SELECT query counted the number of photos in each different gallery photoset and displayed that information in EACH gallery's title.
    The description is in reverse to the flow of the code, keep in mind. Here is the code (the $spec variable is that of the query string.):
    //get the total number of photos in a gallery photoset
    $conn = dbConnect('query');
    $getTotal = "SELECT COUNT(*)
                FROM photos, galleries
                WHERE galleries.g_spec = '$spec%'
                AND galleries.g_id = photos.g_id ";
    $total = $conn->query($getTotal);
    $row = $total->fetch_row();
    $totalPix = $row[0];
    // get the number of galleries
    $conn = dbConnect('query');
    $getGtotal = "SELECT COUNT(*)
                FROM galleries
                WHERE galleries.g_spec = '$spec%' ";
    $g_total = $conn->query($getGtotal);
    $row = $g_total->fetch_row();
    $galTotal = $row[0];
    //get gallery thumbnails, name, description, subject, category, model, photographer, mua
    $conn = dbConnect('query');
    $sql = "SELECT g_thumb1, g_thumb2, g_name, g_desc, subject_id, category_id, model_name, photographer_name, mua_name
            FROM galleries, gallery_spec, model_names, photographer_names, mua_names
            WHERE galleries.g_spec = '$spec%'
            AND gallery_spec.g_spec = galleries.g_spec
            AND model_names.model_id = galleries.g_model
            AND photographer_names.photographer_id = galleries.g_photographer
            AND mua_names.mua_id = galleries.g_mua
            ORDER BY g_id DESC ";
    $result = $conn->query($sql) or die(mysqli_error());
    $galSpec = $result->fetch_assoc();
    *** end of code.
    Anyhow, this worked wonderfully. However, as I add galleries, this list will get quite long. So, I wanted to add navigation which would break up the number of galleries into set quantities.
    When I introduced parameters to LIMIT the number of queries displayed based on a variable called SHOWMAX, my displayed data got all botched. admittedly, I'm adapting code from David Powers' book PHP Solutions and am learning as I go. I gave up on displaying all of the data shown above and went the simple route, figuring I'd add more features as I learned. This necessitated restructuring my database a bit.
    Here is the code I added that allows for navigation based on a limit of 3 entries per page:
    // set maximum number of records per page
    define('SHOWMAX', 3);
    // get the number of galleries
    $conn = dbConnect('query');
    $getGtotal = "SELECT COUNT(*)
                FROM galleries ";
    $g_total = $conn->query($getGtotal);
    $row = $g_total->fetch_row();
    $galTotal = $row[0];
    // set the current page
    $curPage = isset($_GET['curPage']) ? $_GET['curPage'] : 0;
    // retrieve subset of galleries
    $conn = dbConnect('query');
    // calculate the start row of the subset
    $startRow = $curPage * SHOWMAX;
    $sql = "SELECT *
            FROM galleries
            ORDER BY g_id DESC
            LIMIT $startRow,".SHOWMAX;
    $result = $conn->query($sql) or die(mysqli_error());
    $galSpec = $result->fetch_assoc();
    *** end of code.
    Along with some navigation code in the body:
    <div id="header4">
        <p>Displaying <?php echo $startRow+1;
              if ($startRow+1 < $galTotal) {
                echo ' to ';
                if ($startRow+SHOWMAX < $galTotal) {
                  echo $startRow+SHOWMAX;
                else {
                  echo $galTotal;
              echo " of $galTotal";
              if ($curPage > 0) {
                          echo '<a href="'.$_SERVER['PHP_SELF'].'?curPage='.($curPage-1).'"> Back </a>';
              if ($startRow+SHOWMAX < $galTotal) {
                          echo '<a href="'.$_SERVER['PHP_SELF'].'?curPage='.($curPage+1).'"> Next </a>';
              ?>
    I can now display my gallery information in groups of 3 per page.
    THE PROBEM IS that when I add additional queries, say to get the subject and category information, model, photograpger and or make-up artist information, it doesn't always come up, sometimes it messes up the display, and in all cases, this additional information disappears when I navigate from subset to subset. This is why I have been asking about carrying values from one page to the next.
    I am absolutely stonewalled and am going to have to put the galleries into service sans navigation until I can figure it out. I'm willing to even hire someone for advice. I just can not make this work. Yes, I realize it's complex for someone of my skill level, but I have no choice, I have to make this work.
    Alternate forms of navigation/showing subsets of records would be greatly appreciated. ANY help, suggestions or guidance will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you for reading through all this.
    Most sincerely,
    wordman

    Again you are misunderstanding. I'm not suggesting hardcoding any values. I am only asking if you are/were trying to pass the actual subject and category descriptions, or the id's of category and subject so you can requery the database on each page.
    > I don't think the page re-queries on navigating, I think it just loads  info from the array.
    I don't think so. Just look at the SQL. It's using the limit and offset values which means to me that it's only returning the rows for the current page. What array are you talking about?
    >So, I added a separate query to pick this info from the DB, and it bombs  the page.
    I really believe you are going about this all wrong. Right now you are searching for solutions to specific problems without having a solid foundation in the technologies involved. Trying to build as you learn is a recipe for disaster and frustration. Stop what you are doing for a while. Work on some php and SQL tutorials that are unrelated to this project. Work through them until you understand what each line of code is doing.
    Right now you are headed down a rat hole. You may get most of it to work, but you will be plagued by bugs and scripts that are difficult to maintain.

  • Full screen caller image display

    Full Screen Caller image was one of the best feature of an iPhone that made look iPhone simpler and fantastic to use..
    This particular feature seems to have been last with the upgrade to iOS 7.1..
    Please fix this issue..
    Full screen caller image display makes the phone look beautiful and wonderful when a known person is calling

    I agree with you on  the full screen view for when a users contacts call them. I hesitated upgrading, Apple has now joined the ranks for screw-ups! Since the late  Steve Jobs left this earth, Tim Cook has royally screwed-up this company! Customers here in th U.S and arouund the world are the ones shelling out hundreds of dollars for a product that is the best next thing to revoluntionize the way we communicate with others. But it seems that $600+ dollars gets us junk and a device not tailored to us, the users. I want to call them "M!cr0$oft Apples!" Give us the ability to go back to iOS6. Let us choose! We the customers have made this company rich, full of wealth beyond their greedy little hands. Give us the ability to choose what OS we want to install. Their should be a transparency relationship between the customer with the money, and worker who will work for us to render a product that we "the users," want" and not want a senior desinger assumes we think is good. Remember, this is all thanks to a legend who we all know and respect as ("in my own opinion), the father of modern communication Steve Jobs. SJ worked till his last days here to creat a masterpiece, T.C came on board and took a huge "memoryDUMP," and disregarded his visions. If your passionate like me about Apple and what Steve Jobs stood for, then  help me create a petition to make this company see that we "The customers are ALWAYS right!"
    Missing and need back:
    Transparency on the dock and icons
    Working Wifi, and imessage
    Better Battery life!!!
    Reverse the icons back to iOS7.06
    Fix maps
    Unless the designers are gothic in nature (I love Goth!!); dont make our phone dark and heavy on the fonts.
    I dont know about you, but I' am tired of hearing excuses from Apple and its CEO!
    PRETTY MUCH, REVERSE THE UPDATE OR WE WANT OUR MONEY BACK!
    As th general public alredy knows, Apple will never listen or read these suggestions" They sleep soundly in thier 2.5millon homes, and respectively. Why care about those people that are paying thier salary pretty much! Listen up board of directors.....Fire Tim Cook, Hire a go-getter, Micromanage manic that will continue Mr. Jobs legacy and nip this disaster in the bud!  Tweet this, FB this! Let make the world realize we will not take it anymore! Fix the dam problems!

    You can try [about:sessionrestore] otherwise you may have to find them in the History.

  • How can I get iTUNES library to display renamed files and folders (renamed with Windows Explorer)?

    How can I get iTunes library to display the new names and organisation of tracks and albums (ie files and folders) that I have renamed and reorganised (using Windows Explorer) having previously imported them using iTunes?
    (Even when I relocate "lost" tracks in iTunes (using the drop down menu facility to view in Windows explorer), although iTunes will then play the track, and knows where to find it, it refuses to display the track with its correct (new) name, or show it the correct (new) album.  That means I have lots of things called "Untitled" and "Track 01" etc, all of which have actually been renamed, but iTunes does not seem to have the capability to recognise the changes and update its library listing.  Another example - a Tchaikovsky CD with 3 major works in 13 tracks insists on displaying in iTunes as 13 tracks in one album, despite the fact that I have reorganised the tracks into 3 albums - two being Swan Lake and The Nutcracker - and renamed the individual tracks to a more useable format.)

    Thanks for your replies ckuan
    I agree with Tgod that your first solution does not work.  It appears unpredictable whether the old or new file names are listed when you drag the folders into iTunes from Windows Explorer.  The folder structure is completely missing.  I reckon if you have to muck around spending days/weeks/months finding out how to fix links to a secret meta-file (obviously designed by some deep-cover microsoft worm working in the Apple!), then it's pretty obvious that almost any alternate way of doing this would be better.   Bye bye iTunes!!
    Incidentally, I tried several other things that (if the software was designed intuitively) should work, but give disastrous results:
    1) when deleting the library listing in iTunes, it gives you two options - one is to remove the listings to the Recycler.  Be aware that IF you select that option, it removes not only your library listing, but also your ACTUAL MUSIC FILES to the Recycler.  Moreover, it does NOT remove the insidious secret meta-file that is what apparently keeps rewriting old names over your carefully renamed file names, and keeps totally ignoring your carefully designed folder (album) structure.  OK - not a complete disaster, as I realised and went hunting through the chaos in the Recycler to recover all my files.  No thanks to the genius who designed this brilliant feature!
    2) after deleting the library listing in iTunes, I attempted to import just the folders that I wanted.  iTunes refused to allow me to do that, and proceeded to try to import every frigging music file it could find on my whole hard drive, in apparently random fashion into the library.  Whoever thought up that doozy either never ever tried to use or market test it, or has modified their mind rather too many times with artificial substances so their brain is like muesli chop suey.
    3) oh why go on, it's too depressing ...
