Display fails to turn after resume on X41T

I tried following the "Suspend to Disk" guide on the wiki for using suspend2 but I haven't had much luck. The suspend happens quickly but on resume, the screen, at least, doesn't work.  However, I can enter 'reboot' and the computer will reboot. I just can't see what I am typing.
Here is my kernel line:

title Arch Linux
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz26suspend2 root=/dev/sda3 ro resume2=swap:/dev/sda2 vga=773
initrd /kernel26suspend2.img
Here is the output from dmesg | grep -i suspend

Switching consoles doesn't help and since I've tried running hibernate only from the console with no X server running.I tried the suggestion from standby problem[SOLVED] but the screen still wouldn't come up.
Thanks for any help you can give me in resolving this issue.

It may be possible that the driver for the Intel Mobo graphics chip still needs work...
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1284216&tstart=75
I have the Intel GMA X3100 so perhaps the update to 10.5.2 would solve the problem?
Anyone more informed than me care to answer this?
Thanks,
David

  • Macbook (2.1Ghz white 2008 model) display won't turn on during start-up

           hi all,
    my problem is pretty simple.
Sometimes, after having used an external display with my Macbook (using the Apple Mini DVI > DVI adaptor: http://store.apple.com/au/product/M9321G/B?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY ) the Macbook's own display won't power on during the next boot-up. I can hear the hard-disk start up, and the system boot, and I'm even able to navigate my way into the user login and shut the computer down (all via the keyboard). So the computer is definitely powering up (and in a seemingly normal way), but the display isn't.
For example, last night I was using an external display with my Macbook. This morning I plug the display back into my Mac Pro, then power-up my Macbook. But the Macbook's display won't turn on. It's as though it thinks the external display is still plugged-in. I know, that if I re-connect the external display, the Macbook's login page is displayed, but only on the external screen.
The problem only arose after I started using this particular external display (a cheap 22" BenQ, model G2222HDL 'senseye 3'). I wouldn't normally use the display with my Macbook, but my Mac Pro has a **really** noisy optical drive (CD/DVD), which makes watching films pretty unbearable (if you're into sound anyway, which I am).... so until I get my Mac Pro's drive sorted (when I have a few spare days when I won't be needing it), I'll have to continue using my external display with my Macbook to watch films.
My Macbook's specs are as follows:
    2.1Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook (2008 model - I think, maybe 2009?)
    4Gb RAM
    Running OS X 10.5.8
Are there any known display issues with these models of Macbook? Or are there any software/firmware updates that address any display issues?
In general, I don't update the software/firmware unless I need to, or unless something doesn't seem to be working properly.
However, I've just checked Software Update, and noticed there is an SMC firmware update (1.4). So I might give that a go and see if the problem persists.
However, the problem is intermittant, and kind of unpredicatable, so I might not know for a while if it solves the problem or not.
Has anyone else had a similar problems?
Alternatively, is there a possibility there is some kind of virus or file-corruption causing this problem?
My girlfriend has a similar model of Macbook (which she's never had any problems with). Recently I moved a whole bunch of files from my Macbook to hers, and she noticed that hers had a similar issue starting up, where the display failed to turn on.... so it seems like
    a) it might be a common-ish problem in this model of Macbook
    or
    b) perhaps I've got some kind of virus on mine?
I've been using Macs for about 15 years (yet, I don't consider myself a computer expert, when it comes to the technical details). In those 15 years, viruses have never really been a concern to me, as I've never really thought they were much threat to Macs. However, I guess, as Macs get increasingly more popular, there's a possibility people will write more Mac-specific viruses...?
    Anyway, I'm open to suggestions : )
    Regards,
    Sam
    PS I've tried:
-re-starting the computer multiple times (which sometimes works, but usually doesn't).
-re-setting the SMC (which usually works, but not always)
-plugging/un-plugging the external display to try and jog the computer into noticing it isn't connected (which doesn't work)

let me ellaborate on this part:
"b) perhaps I've got some kind of virus on mine?"
I mean, " perhaps I've got some kind of virus on mine, and I've passed it on to hers?"

  • Macbook display sometimes fails to turn on after shut down (2008 2.4Ghz dual core 2 duo - 2GB DDR2 running OSX 10.6.8)

I own a black macbook (early 2008 model) and for the past few months the display has occasionally (although recently more often) failed to turn on when booting. This only happens every one in four times after a full shut down. When I turn on the computer, I hear the hard drive boot and the fans start going, I also get a response in the white light indicator. When this occurs, I then have to press the on/off button to shut the macbook down, then press the button to turn it on again. Sometimes this works on the second try, but other times it takes 3 to 4 times turning it on or turning it off. Initially I thought it was a hard drive issue (and planned to purchase a new hard drive), but after connecting the laptop to an external screen, the desktop shows up (macbook display remains off despite unplugging or replugging external display). Is this a firmware issue? Or potentially a display cable issue? I'm leaning towards firmware since it only happens every 1 in 4 times. All parts in the macbook are original to 2008 and I've never really had any problems before.
I've tried resetting by taking out the battery/pressing the on button.
I also did a clean 7 pass wipe and reinstalled Mac OSX.
Used TechTool Deluxe - found no issues.
Booted computer and pressed D to perform a Mac hardware test - no problems found.
Not sure what to do now...
These two looked mildly like my problem: http://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/68700/Not+booting+properly+after+10.6.8+and+F irmware+updates and another suggested replacing the display cable: http://www.ifixit.com/MacBook-Parts/MacBook-Display-Data-Cable/IF186-073?utm_sou rce=ifixit_guide&utm_medium=wiki_text&utm_term=if186-073&utm_content=product_lin k

    Hi Haleynichole_99!
I have an article here with some troubleshooting steps that can help you resolve this issue with your iOS device:

  • Slimline s3321p display does not turn on after sleep (Win 7)

Upgraded from Vista 32 bit system to Win 7 32 bit because of lots of Vista issues. Win 7 resolved most problems but then recently, after a couple of months, display would not turn on following sleep or hibernation. Couldn't fix so did clean install of win 7 64 bit (custom instead of update) to resolve the problem. But same thing in Win 7 64. Installed the multiple MS updates. MS''s Nvidia display driver install always failed and a couple others I downloaded elsewhere failed as well. Did finally get a recent driver from nvidia's website that installed (9.18.13.697), but it didn't solve the problem. Ran the same as the older driver.
    Also tried the following:
-all kinds of power setting changes
-different monitor (flatscreen TV is the normal one I use because this is my dvr/media machine)
    -different RGB cable
-ran win 7 install disk to fix any OS problems
    -inactivating hibernate
-checking voltage output of all power supply leads following instructions (all within normal tolerance)
    -reconnecting all motherboard leads
-swapping around the two 2GB memory modules
    -various system checks
-tried to install various Vista 64 bit fixes/updates from HP website, but they don't install ("don't meet minimum requirements")
-and more things I can't remember
HP doesn't seem to have any Win 7 support for this computer, so now I'm at a loss. At the moment I'm leaving the machine on all the time, but don't want to do this forever. I suppose it could be a faulty motherboard, but short of replacement, anything else to try?

    Hi,
    A couple of suggestions:
Check you have the latest BIOS update - 5.18 - search for sp40834.exe - often these updates improve these functions
If you are game, try just one RAM stick installed as a test, try slot 0 and 1
Lastly, try a different video cable - It's a long shot, but it could be key to the issue
    Hope that these suggestions assist

  • Re: Qosmio X500 - Monitor fails to turn on after waking from Sleep mode

    Hello all,
I have a problem with my Qosmio X500-10T:
After placing it into Sleep mode, upon waking it up again (opening the lid, pressing a key, moving the mouse or pressing the power button) the screen fails to turn on (it could possibly be a black screen, although I doubt it as I cannot really see any traces of the LED backlight). The only way beyond this is rebooting by holding down the power button.
    I appreciate any help.

I have a X500-10T, under 4 weeks old. Straight from the box it had the problems with going to sleep/hibernation and the only way to bringit back to life was to remove the battery and follow the reset procedue as instructed by Toshiba technicians. Currently the sleep and hibenation has been disabled, it was unuasble. I have a bluetooth mouse that also is a nightmare, it drops in and out of operation at any time, mostly if left untouched for a while. Some times a reboot brings it back to life whilst at other times it takes 30-40 minutes of switching on and off a number of settings, cant' realy workout what's going on. This unit was supplied with the latest BIOS ver 1.4 so not known any difference.
Technicians aslo did a full re-set bakt to factory defaults, this did not make any difference apard from giving me several hours of work in restalling all my programmes. I am worried as I only have just over 11 months warranty left. I have been advised not to use the fingure print identification system as any protected data will be un recoverable if it goes wrong, I would be interested if any other users have any concerns about this, the reminder to set this is driving me crazy, and apparently it can't be switched off when I asked.Has any one who had thee issues managed to get it sorted. The big question for me is it a BIOS problem, graphic card software issue or a Windows 7 issue.

  • IMac display doesn't turn back on after sleep

This is a new problem on my two-year old iMac, and didn't happen before. What is happening with my iMac is that when it goes to sleep and the display turns off, the display doesn't turn back on when I move the mouse, press the keys or the power button.
It happens only after around 12 hours or so of inactivity, it seems. I have to reboot the iMac to force the display to turn back on. I think it is display issue, not the computer lockup because I checked which logs were written in /var/log - system.log was being written until I rebooted the iMac. However, I didn't see any information in there around the same time that I tried to turn the iMac back on.
Any ideas on how to debug the issue.

    Hi dailyjoe
    1. Reset your SMC exactly as instructed in the following article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
    2. It would be normal for you to have to startup your iMac if it lost power while in sleep mode, look at the box "Start up automatically after a power failure" in the Energy Saver preference.
I have always left the box for "Start up automatically after a power failure" unchecked and do occasionally find the iMac is shutdown because the power has gone off. I would suggest leaving the box unchecked, it's better than having the iMac going off & restarting multiple times if you are having bad weather or power issues.

  • Display won't turn back on after battery dies

I have a Macbook Pro Intel Core i7 and am running OSX 10.7.5
Everytime I am using my computer and the battery dies, the display will not turn on after I plug it in again.  I have tried to wait until the computer has charged up a good amount, but when I wake the computer back up after dying, the macbook startup sound plays and the LED light shines bright as if it were on, but no display.  I have also tried click and pressing different buttons on the keyboard to see if this would wake it up, but no success.  I have had to do hard restarts everytime this happens because it is the only way to get my display working again.
    Any help is appreiciated.  Thanks!

  • Sony A7 failed to turn on after updating firmware 2.00

As i mentioned, my Sony A7 failed to turn on after updating firmware 2.00. It just appear a blank screen after click the finished button on the updating app on Mac. I waited for more than an hour and there is still no thing happened.

I bought the Sony A7II a few days ago.  It initially charged just fine, but today I tried to charge it using the cable with an electrical outlet as well as the USB to computer.  Neither one would get the charge light to illuminate.  Not feeling the love Sony.  I just purchased a Flash, wrist belt, filters, etc...  I'm definitely not happy.  It seems this is a problem!

  • Iphone 3gs shutdowns random, it fails to turn on, it displays a white screen with colors lines

I have an iPhone 3GS. It It shutdowns random, it fails to turn on, it displays a white screen with colors lines.

I have the 3GS and it recently started the RSD.  At first I thought it was just the batter not holding a charge and being lower than what the display showed.  However, even when fully charged the RSD's occur mostly when loading either Apps or web pages in Safari.
I have not experienced the white screen and colored line, yet apparently.  Is this the logic board like in the MacBook's?

  • SMPlayer vs. Mplayer - behaviour after resuming a pause

For a few weeks I've been experiencing a change in SMPlayer behaviour after resuming a pause of playing a video - motion of the video is jerked for a few seconds. However, I don't experience this with MPlayer. Has anybody else noticed this or does anybody know what could I do to make SMPlayer work normally?

  • Screen is black after resume

I have an Asus A8Jm laptop and every time I suspend-to-ram, the resume cycle returns me to a black screen. Sometimes, I can see a mouse cursor, so I know that the backlight is on. Each time, I have to ctrl+alt+backspace out of X to restart my session. It does essentially the same thing whether using KDE with KPowersave or Gnome with gnome-power-manager or E17 and however E17 suspends-to-ram. Seeing as they all react in similar ways, it leads me to believe it's a problem with X. Also, I run beryl, but I've tried it with and without it, which resulted in the same situation. Here's my X config:

    Hi,
on my A3fc all seems working just fine except sleep mode. Hibernation works OK. There is only black screen after resume from sleep, I could only see harddrive LED on for a while, but no response to any key (like CapsLock).
I found in pm-powersave.log this two problems:
"Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/wireless false: Turning powersave for wlan0 off...Error for wireless request "Set Power Management" (8B2C) : SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. Failed."
"Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/pcie_aspm false: /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/pcie_aspm: line 9: echo: write error: Operation not permitted"
Same problem was posted but not solved at Ubuntu forum ( http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=230935. ). pm-powersave and s2ram work only if wifi is disabled from bios.
    Any idea?

    Hi StenM,
Have you already encountered some workaround to this issue?
I have the same errors in pm-powersave.log and also I have problems when resuming after suspending.
Some workaround has been posted recently in this thread, check if it can solve your problem. Some users have done it with success, but not for me yet
If you solve your problem or find any other workaround, please, tell us.
    Thx.

  • System freeze after resume from suspend to RAM

    Hi,
since quite a while (probably ever) I am unable to suspend my computer to RAM because everytime it freezes a few seconds after resuming, never to become alive again until a reboot. After some investigation, I managed to get kernel logs by taking a picture of my screen. The logs were not written to disk, hence I didn't see anything before. I had to write these by hand, I hope I didn't insert any mistakes:

This issue seems to be related to disk failures like bad sectors but I am quite sure, that my SSDs are in a good shape. I ran some SMART tests, they all turned out to be okay. Suspending from my dual-booted Windows works fine as well (although if the bad sector would be on the linux partition, it would probably not affect Windows).
    Here's my setup:

I am not sure which one of the disks causes the freeze but I assume it's the revodrive because the logs talk about two drives. The Revodrive internally holds two drives, which are set up to operate in a RAID 0. Windows is installed on the Corsair drive, and has no access to the Revodrive. However, I used to run Windows on the Revodrive a few years ago, and it worked just fine.
Another interesting thing is that when I try to test suspend to RAM, the system does not freeze, nor produce errors. This only happens if none is written to /sys/power/pm_test (which means no automated wake-up, no testing).
Any ideas on how I could narrow down this issue? Thanks a lot!
    EDIT
I just checked and confirmed that this issue is originating from the OCZ Revodrive:

Thank you for the link, unfortunally I don't have a NVIDIA card but use the Intel IGP (HD4600, Haswell) - maybe I should have mentioned that...
And other than in this bug report I cannot kill X or anything because neither other TTYs work - I cannot input anything (although the hotkeys work weird enough) nor is SSHD running because the system is completely frozen...
Very funny thing is that for the last 2 days my system didnt freeze once (suspended about 6-7 times during one boot), even though for the 2 weeks prior to that, it froze EVERY SINGLE TIME I resumed from suspend, it didnt work once...

  • [Solved] Slock crash after resume

    Hi there.
    I recently experience something odd.
I call slock in /etc/systemd/system/[email protected] so that the screen is locked after resume.
What started only recently (I believe) is that (I assume) slock crashes about a minute after resume.
The only thing I can observe is that the lock screen is suddenly gone, without me touching anything.
If I enable slock manually this does not happen, so I assume that something kills slock.
    Any ideas?

    $ cat /etc/systemd/system/[email protected]
    [Unit]
    Description=User suspend actions
    Before=suspend.target

    User=%I
    Type=forking
    Environment=DISPLAY=:0
    ExecStart=/usr/bin/slock

    WantedBy=suspend.target
There was no reference to slock in the journal. I will have to test again later. The journal output is obscured by:
    ...skipping...
No idea why anyone would think that it is helpful to not show part of the journal....
I have a couple of suspicious lines in there (reverse log because I don't know how to just search near the end), but I am not sure whether this is the problematic case:

  • Running xscreensaver in the background after resume from hibernate

I'm using hibernate-script with my tuxonice kernel. One of the things that annoys me about xscreensaver is how when I resume its always running (because the requisite time has passed), so I have to type my password again, having just typed it at BIOS level.
So I killall xscreensaver in an OnSuspend in /etc/hibernate/common.conf. However, restarting xscreensaver doesn't go to the background. What I'm using is this:-
    OnResume 20 sudo -b -u MYUSERNAME /usr/bin/xscreensaver
However the terminal that I typed sudo hibernate from never returns, I have to killall xscreensaver from another terminal to get it to release. The problem does not occur when I login to a vt as root and run the same command.
    Any suggestions?

I just registered for the forum so I could toss in my solution, so I hope this is what you're looking for. I fork the process and use the 'disown' command. I also use Dan Bernstein's 'setuidgid' utility because I couldn't get it to work with su (I didn't try very hard):
    OnResume 70 setuidgid USERNAME xscreensaver > /dev/null 2>&1 & disown
This works for me even if I execute hibernate and resume from a terminal, despite the fact that II get a "can't find display" error from the terminal.
Of course, the stdout and stderr redirect to /dev/null is not necessary. The 'disown' command removes the subprocess from the process table, so that the subprocess is no longer a child of the parent. It is cast off, essentially. I also use a similar command for restarting gkrellm because gkrellm sometimes fails to recognize my second battery after resume.
One quirk I have found is that hibernate will halt if a kill or killall fails. I thought this was happening because the kill command had returned a non-zero exit status. But I just discovered that forking a kill command prevents hibernate from halting when a kill fails, as in:
    OnSuspend 20 killall xscreensaver > /dev/null 2>&1 &
