Display flicker then lock-up?

I have a 2007 MBP and within the past week the screen has, on occasion, stuttered or flickered then locked up to the point of requiring a reboot--audio has continued to play if I was watching something at that time. In each case, I can say that I've been online and the MBP case has been hot. Is this indicative of a failing fan or video card? Whats the best practice for testing for this possibility? (And if so, how easy is it for someone to replace--I've replaced RAM and a hard-drive in MacBooks before but not a fan or vid card)
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated in advance. Thanks again.

I've replaced RAM and a hard-drive in MacBooks before but not a fan or vid card)
There is not video card--the video hardware is soldered to the logic board. The Apple Repair Extension Program that S.U. linked replaces the entire logic board.
The nVidea failures were commonly linked to high operating temps. Games with heavy-duty graphic demands really run up the temps.
There are several things you can do to mitigate heat issues:
1) See if any background processes are eating up CPU cycles. Quit all running user applications so the computer is at normal idle. Find Activity Monitor in Applications > Utilities and launch it. If you've not run it before, change the "Show" pulldown at the top of the AM window from its default of "User Processes" to "All Processes." There is a column for "%CPU." Click that column header to sort by CPU usage.
If any process is using more than about 25 percent of the CPU cycles while the computer is idling, post the names of the processes and we can see if they can be eliminated.
2) Make certain your physical arrangement of the computer and your usage patterns are not contributing to overheating. Apple recommends against using the MBP on your lap or any surface that contacts the case bottom. The case bottom is part of the heat dissipation system and needs need air.
If you need to use the computer in your lap, make a simple lap board from scrap plywood ot an old serving tray. The height of the rubber feet is usually enough to let the air move but, if you are playing graphics-intensive games, you may want to insert some 1/2-inch (13mm) spacers, or get a powered chill pad to help move heat away.
The main exhaust vent is under the display hinge on the back panel of the case. It must not be obstructed.
If using an external monitor, avoid "clamshell" mode (internal display closed). A lot of heat can escape from the keyboard area if you leave the lid up.
Here is an Apple article on temps but it does not list critical temps for any model:

  • Display wallpaper on locked screen

I noticed about a week ago that my Z10 was displaying the BB_Blue.jpgp wallpaper on the locked screen. I saw it for a few days and then it stopped.
I thought it was odd because I had not chosen a wallpaper setting on the device to that point, so I thought it might be related to the OS update to 10.1.0.273 (although this happened several weeks after the update).
But I liked the look!  It relieved the monotony of the dark background.
So then I set the wallpaper to BB_Blue.jpgp and it works on all screens except when the device is locked.
Does anyone know how to set the wallpaper to display on the locked screen?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The solution came to me after I realized what was different about my setup.
I had enabled Parental Controls as a means of screening telemarketer calls. With PC enabled only calls from numbers in my contacts would cause the phone to ring, all other calls would go directly to Call Answer.
What I further realized is that some settings applied while Parental Controls are enabled, apply only to that mode. My clue was the fact that  I had arranged my icons one way, and when I briefly disabled Parental Controls they were back to the standard view.
I tested this by setting the wallpaper for the standard view to purple, then enabled Parental Controls and set the wallpaper to blue. While navigating in Parental Controls mode the wallpaper is blue, but when the screen locks the purple wallpaper is displayed.
So the bug (or undocumented feature) is that the wallpaper you choose with Parental Controls enabled is not the one used for the locked screen. The locked screen uses the wallpaper from the standard view. In my original problem, because I had not set a wallpaper for the standard view, the locked screen showed only the dark background.

  • When unlocking with touch ID phone goes black with apple icon then locks again?

when I go to unlock my screen with the "touch ID" the home screen opens for a flash then goes to a black screen and the "apple" logo appears for 10-20 seconds then locks again.  If I try to unlock with touch ID again it'l work usually.  When using my pass code with the keypad no issue.  Phone is brand new 7.0.4 software was already installed on the phone.

    Thanks for the input.
Unfortunately that is not my case: I close all open apps several times a day and just had four open windows in Safari.
I closed all of them, just to make sure and did a reboot.
That helped for around 5 times, then the phone does the same thing again.
It actually doesn't reboot but just displays the black apple logo on a white screen for about 10 seconds and after that gives me the home screen.
So it is definitely not a reboot, I think.
Until now I assume it is an error, it would just be nice to know if it is a hardware or software error.....

  • Lumia 830 display flicker

    Hii everyone,
I am facing a display flicker issue on my Lumia 830 on zero brightness setting (upto brightness at 20%)which is easily noticeable in the dark & also slight flicker when set to auto-brightness mode similarly in low -light or dark environment where the display automatically adjusts itself to minimal brightness setting.
As per several threads which I came across the display flicker is universal among all the LUMIA range, starting from 520 or 625,720 to the 1020 or the 930.
Is this a firmware issue which can be neutralized by firmware update or is it an display's hardware problem.
Please enlighten me on this issue.
Note: Display is working absolutely fine on medium to high brightness levels,no issue at all.I love the display on my 830.
Hoping for solution from team NOKIA/MS
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks mate for your valuable feedback.
I will surely try a soft reset or a even hard reset maybe. But currently I am on the "fake" Denim firmware which MS rolled out with the LUMIA 830.The real Denim update is yet to hit my 830 in my region.
So i think updating first to the real denim might eliminate this flickering problem. If not ,then as you mentioned will go with a soft or hard reset.
If the issue still persists then will surely proceed for replacement as the device is under warranty.

  • Display flicker

i have a late 2012 mac mini with display flicker, iv tried installing the firmware update, but its saying its not compatible? Is there any other way to stop the display flicker?

Does it do this all the time, or say only after Sleeping?
Couple of things to try if you haven't...

(SMC reset=  Shut down, disconnect power cord for 10 seconds, reconnect power cord, wait 5 more seconds, turn computer back on)

  • OTN brings up pages quickly, then locks up the browser for 20+ seconds.

I am running IE7 on Windows XP. When I go to OTN the page will display quickly but then locks up the browser for over 20 seconds. During that 20 seconds it is pegging one of my 2 CPUs. I have tried on a Win7 machine running IE8 and it works fine there. I tried a FireFox 2.0.0.4 on a Citrix platform and that worked fine. When I tried IE7 on Citrix that exhibited the same 20 second delay as IE7 on my desktop. So possibly IE7 related.
I've tried emptying all the browser caches, cookies, history etc. That did not help.
I have a SysInternals Process Monitor log file of the problem if you are interested.
I have also opened an SR SR 3-6249649411 related to this problem but they tell me it needs to be handled through this forum.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,
It's a little confused about "Ever since then my computer locks up for 10 to 30 seconds, mainly for internet related tasks"?
Did you give us a screenshot? Did you mean it freeze when browsing the Internet Explorer?
    If yes, try this:

  • ITunes starts to update the iPod then locks up

I have a 15GB iPod which was suffering with the chkdsk error, i updated the iTunes software, the iPod software and eventually restored the iPod to its factory settings. When connected I can see the iPod in my computer, in the device manager and in iTunes. Yet when I try and update any songs from iTunes it starts then locks the computer.
Sometimes an error message about the drive being open and a disk needs inserting will appear but eveything has locked up by this stage.
I cannot understand why all the drives and messages in device manager look okay but as soon as i try and use them they lock up.
I have tried changing the drive letter for the iPod to no avail.
    Any ideas anybody

    Hi there David,
You might like to refer to some of the latter more advanced troubleshooting steps in my Chkdsk Compendium:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=361771
in particular - you say you've already tried changing the drive letter - how about modifying the hardware policies perhaps - details close to the end of my thread.
Do let us know how you get on...
    Kind regards,
    Gopha.

it gets to the grey apple start up screen... then LOCKS. the little spinning 'flower' never shows up. then the fans slowly increase.
i have to hold down the power button for 5 seconds to shut-down. i've tried keyboard startup tricks, but the power to the keyboard & mouse seem to get CUT... i can't even boot from a CD.
going to try to replace the lithium battery first.
    any other suggestions ??

You may be able to open the drive and boot from the system disc if you hold down the mouse button on restart. If this doesn't work, slide down the silver optical drive gate and insert a strong, straightened paper clip in the emergency eject hole shown in Figure 3 here (you don't have to remove the drive)(it is a mechanical release, so you will have to slide the tray out by hand)

  • Trouble with Safari 6.0.5. Works for a few minutes then locks up in all tabs (wheel spinning). Chrome

Trouble with Safari 6.0.5. Works for a few minutes then locks up in all tabs (wheel spinning). Chrome & Firefox work fine. Using OSX 10.8.4. Wonder if I downloaded plugin causing this? Please help.

Yes, a plugin or an extension either one...
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab.
Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.
If it's not a plug-in issue, select the Extensions tab. If there are any extensions installed, turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.  If that made a difference, uninstall one at a time, quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the culprit.

  • How to get my lock button to stop turning volume down then locking, and my side volume button to stop locking my iPod?

Recently sent my iPod touch 4 generation into a local place for a battery change, and now it's suddenly swapped the lock button and lower side volume button. The lock button now turns the volume down then locks, and the volume button turns down and locks too. Anybody know how to stop this? It's annoying! Thanks for your help:)

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem take it back to where you got it fixed. They messed up.
