Display flickers upon booting

When I boot my computer, after the grey Apple screen comes up my display shows a vertical, white, pixelated box before the login screen. Sometimes there is also a horizontal box. The width of the box is about 2-3" and it is as long as the screen in each dimension. Should I be concerned? I'm still covered under AppleCare.

I think your mother board is dead. Run asap Apple Hardware test from your MACOSX DVD.
If yoy get a screen with vertical pixels like shown on this link you have a problem with video memory

  • MBP Display flickers upon boot-up

    Hi guys,
My macbook pro (mid 2012) has started flickering badly upon boot-up. The display also jiggles up and down on occassion when loading web pages. I have upgraded to Mavericks and my MBP is usually hooked up to a large monitor.  Problem just started happening.
    Any advice or input??
    Thanks!

Does the flickering happen when connected to the external monitor, too? If so, you may have a GPU problem. If not, if it only happens on the built-in display, it could be a problem with the screen or the connector.
In any event, were I you, I would take the machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them give you a free diagnosis and estimate for repair. If it is a problem with the GPU you'll need to have the logic board replaced, which can be quite costly if you don't have AppleCare.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • [SOLVED] Display flickers upon quitting X

When I take some action that quits the X server like logging out or switching tty, the display begins to jump around the screen. When I switch from a non-X tty to a different one, this problem does not appear. It only happens when I switch away from X, and affects all displays, not just X related ones once it starts. And once it starts, the only resolution I have been able to find is to reboot.
I am using LightDM and Xfce, but I don't expect that matters.
    I am using a Lenovo ThinkPad x250, I have xf86-video-intel installed.

Great, thanks for the results.  This suggests (to me at least) that this is a temporary state that the kernel hackers will catch up with eventually.  I had to use uxa for a while on my other intel graphics card, but as the kernel and/or graphics drivers caught up I could switch back to sna.  The linux drivers are often playing catch up with the newest hardware, and the broadwell chips are pretty new on the scene.  I'll update in a couple hours on whether this switch works for me too.
EDIT: I just confirmed uxa works fine on my Broadwell hardware too.  It looks to me like this could be "solved."

  • Installed Boot Camp; my external display isn't recognized upon boot in2 OSX

Man... Apple should really allow more characters in the Subject line. Here's a fuller subject:
"I installed Boot Camp and now my external display isn't recognized and receives no video upon booting into OSX (10.5.8)"
Unplugging and replugging the monitor resolves the issue until the next reboot. Had no issues prior to the installation of Boot Camp. (Windows 7 works really well, btw. I've had no issues there amazingly).
Has anybody seen this before and could point me towards the light? Thanks in advance,
    Dave

I'd just like to add that this no longer works with OS X Lion 10.3.8 either...  Get your **** together Apple.  It's called MacBook "Pro" for a reason.

  • Display flickers on start up

My display flickers slowly when coming out of sleep or booting up. After a short while the monitor works perfectly.  After it goes into sleep mode, or when the screen saver goes dark, upon awakening the flicker starts again. I recently replaced my ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card and VGA cable that connects to Mini Displayport / VGA adapter.  Any idea what the problem might be and how to fix?

Converting Mini DisplayPort to VGA is fairly difficult.
If you are not using the larger DVI-I port, I suggest you buy a cheap adapter that pulls the Card-generated VGA directly off that -- no conversion required. The VGA signals are in the bar at the end and the four pins around it, plus one more pin from the top row of the grid. Salmon-pink in this diagram:

  • External Display Flickers (Intel on board)

    Hi,
I have recently made a fresh installation of Arch Linux and trying to setup it for my work environment. I made a basic installation of xfce4 with slim login manager. I wanted to hook my laptop with an external display. I used xrandr to extend my laptop display with the external display. Everything worked fine but my external display flickers insanely bad. I cannot stare at it for > 30s. I dual boot on windows, so I tested the same setup with windows and it worked just fine, out of the box. I even used one of my friend's laptop who's running ubuntu and has the same h/w. It worked out of the box. I have spent more than 8 hours trying to find out where the issue would be and miserably failed. Below are certain logs and output that might help traingulate my issue.
Its a Dell Inspiron N4030, with Intel onboard graphics. I have the xf86-video-intel driver installed and the display works perfectly fine with laptops default display.

No one? I have the exact same problem. MSI x360 laptop, intel onboard graphics. I too use xrandr. I've seen elsewhere that windows users have solved this by turning off GPU overclocking. Maybe this can point us in the right direction?

  • My macbook air (version 10.9.4) display flickers, has random tabs and windows opening, and there are random ads almost everywhere. All this happens when I am using safari. What can I do?

My macbook air (version 10.9.4) display flickers, has random tabs and windows opening, and there are random ads almost everywhere. All this happens when I am using safari. What can I do?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Regarding to Display Flickering

Well, as a lot of people I'm one of those who have suffered the disturbing and scary display flickering. It was more frustrating since it begun after the 1st. year and I don't have AppleCare. Well I don't know if this solution works for everybody but at least for me it was magic. Before this I tried every hardware/firmware reset solution but nothing works. Also I have read of people who had their inverters replaced (for me it looks like a Logic Board replacement) and some with good results and others... well, not so good.
The think I did was simply erase the ~/Library/Preferences and never had those flickerings anymore. Maybe something gets corrupt there but by now I have a lot of days without even a little dim, perhaps in the Preferences is where the brightness setting file is located and it gets corrupt, I don't know but it worked, so maybe that's your solution too. Note: remember, if you delete the Preferences folder a lot of your preferences in the Finder, Dock, Dashboard and System Preferences will be back to factory defaults (or system defaults), but no personal or important files are deleted. The OSX in your next login/reboot will generate the folder again automatically.
    Good Luck!

    fredericlang:
I'm glad it worked for you!.
I deeply checked the Preferences folder and as I see the folder ByHost contains the screensaver and system preferences files and also other named HIToolbox but I don't know what is that for. I think the screensaver or system preferences are the ones who do the mess, so if this flicker comes again I'll try just deleting those to check.
    Martin1301:
    I mean ~/Library/Preferences
    corband:
I think is just the CD that for some reason doesn't let the system to boot.
Just power up the macbook and with the chime sound press (and keep it pressed) the trackpad button until the CD is ejected.

Software Update: Java for OS X 2013-002 1.0
This update, upon booting, has caused my disk space to fill up and my system freezes up. The same happens to my coworker's computer. We both watch the remaining disk space decrease and the "spinning rainbow appears" and we must restart. What do we do?

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so.
Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Display flickers

My display flickers and shuts off only when I first start up my Macbook Pro. I can open and close the lid to get it to completely shut off. Any ideas?

    Hello shabbdaddy,
After reviewing your post, it sounds like the display flickers only when booting the computer. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • Display error after boot

I'm having an issue where the display fails after boot, and displays only a fixed noise pattern. The screen looks completely normal through POST, GRUB, and when initially loading the kernel, when the display is still in a text mode. After that, the screen goes black for a brief second, after which it returns displaying the mentioned noise pattern. The system appears unresponsive after this, and the only option is to shut down the system with the power button.
Adding nomodeset or vga=794 to the kernel options resolves the issue. That is a temporary fix IMHO; I'd prefer something sturdier, which is my reason for posting. The issue appeared after a pacman -Syu about a week ago, I just haven't had time to look at it until now.
I've added i915 to MODULES in mkinitcpio.conf and rebuilt as described here in an attempt to fix it, but it did not seem to have any effect.
I believe this may be a KMS or a driver issue, but I do not know how to confirm or troubleshoot it. I would be grateful if anyone could shed some light on the issue, or point me in the right direction to find out what's causing the issue. Please let me know if any more logs should be attached. I'll try to attach a picture of the screen as well as a dmesg output from the failed startup later.

The bug is known, and a patch has been submitted: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80151. There's been no update since friday, so I wonder what the current status is, or if it's up for review at all.
Does anyone know how we can be notified when this patch hits the kernel?

  • How do I get out of kernel panic?  kernel panic upon boot.  I did that hard drive cleanup and reinstalled Lion.  What about memory?  Anyone think I need to upgrade my memory?  I have 8gig.

I get kernel paic upon boot.  I did that hard drive cleanup and reinstalled Lion.  What about memory?  Anyone think I need to upgrade my memory?  I have 8 G of upgraded RAM. (20 inch iMac core 2 duo)

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.

  • Facing "Display Flickering" problem with my 15" macbook pro(A1286)while swapping the desktops and closing the tabs.....need help...reply soon

Suggest Solution for this Display Flickering problem ....

Hi, I read the post about calibration and I probably do that a little too often TBH! As I get so little time out the battery and mainly use my MBP on my lap, usually with the power supply near by, it gets charged to full, run to empty to the point of sleep, or sometimes it even cuts out and then is recharged to full again, so I really think it's new battery time. I've seen non Apple Official ones for between £35 and £65 that have 3 year warranties and state they are around 5200mh but am unsure due to reviews.
    Later...
Anyway's I have now ordered a non Apple replacement from Amazon for about £35 and it has several good reviews and 4.5 out of 5 stars so I'll see if it works and report back. If it doesn't I'll send it back and get the Official Apple one.

  • Display freezes at boot until screen moved

March 2010 Macbook Pro 15 - display freezes at boot from cold.
First image is dark purple, this lightens to patchy grey with vertical lines.
Move the screen and the display changes to account log in screen, but track pointer is frozen and screen gamma rises until display is whiteout with vertical lines.
Freeze and whiteout can last up to 90 seconds now, freeing for a fresh display each time screen is moved then freezing again.
Problem getting worse - lasts longer and now occurs on wake as well as boot.
Have updated everything, checked for malware, cleaned all app content, run disk utility/ repair, hardware check, reset permissions, reset PRAM, reset gamma, reset SMC - not helped. No history of damage!
Took to Apple - they replaced logic board and graphic card - problem not fixed.
Any advice to give me to give them when I go back to the bar?
    Thanks

    1. Start up in Safe Mode.(shift key at startup)
    a. Drag the Fonts folder from the Mac OS 9 System Folder (not the Mac OS X System folder) to the desktop.
    b. Drag the Fonts folder from ~/Library/Fonts to the desktop.
    b. Restart the computer in Mac OS X.
    c. If this solves the problem....you have a corrupt font in one of the above font folders
    2. Remove incompatible third-party startup items.
    a. Start up in Safe Mode.(shift at startup)
    b. Open the Mac OS X hard disk.
    c. Drag third-party items out of ....
    /Library/StartupItems .......
/System/Library/StartupItems ... Place them on the desktop .... If you're unsure whether an item is a third-party item or an Apple-installed item, don't move it.
    d.Restart the computer.
Note.. If this resolves the issue, add the Startup Items one at a time until the symptom occurs again. That way you'll know which one is incompatible. Repeat these steps and remove the incompatible item.

  • My keyboard is not responsive upon booting up my iMac

I powered down my iMac for one day.  Upon booting up, my mouse and keyboard do not communicate with the screen.  How do I fix this?

    Hello:
Sorry, it is short for system management controller.
    You reset it like this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
That sometimes fixes odd problems.  It cannot hurt anything to reset the SMC.
