Display going haywire/freezing

frequently/regularly when i'm working in iphoto, my screen goes completely haywire, and in a minute or 2 my entire desktop/display also goes digital and pixelly. It will quickly freeze up entirely, and I have to manually re-start my computer. I'm not having this problem with any other appplications, though. someone suggested a video card problem may be causing this- any thoughts?

Hi
With the symptoms you described this could well be a video card problem. It may be that showing photos on screen witch may be large, is taking the the card to near breakdown. On a windows Pc this was usually a fan problem forcing the chip to get hot. Have you done the apple hardware test to see if you have problems with the mac, also if you have tech-tools run a scan. Hopefully you have just got the iMac and you could take it back and show somebody in the appleshop the problem. You can check the heat, fan speed etc with the excellent program iStat Pro at http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
this may give you a few clues as to the problem.

  • MBP Display going haywire

Hi, I have a MBP 17", 10.6.8.  The display is going crazy, lots of sections of various applications and windows all jumping around the screen. (photo attached) Happened only 3 times.  Think it may be a graphic card problem, but want more clarification before making appt at Genius Bar.
    Any other ideas?
    Cheers, Chris.

    Anyone?

  • Display goes white, freezes

Recently, at seemingly random times, my MacBook Pro 15" Dual Core will freeze, the screen will go to a strange white/gray gradient that continuously brightens until the whole screen is white.
The last few times it's happened, I've been running a program that is graphically intensive, so that might play some role in this.
Any ideas? Something tells me a simple restart + key combo won't fix this :\

There may be a cable from the logic board & graphics card area
which could've failed, since those have to flex with the display lid.
Some have an inverter & inverter cable, others have an LVSD
cable, so these kinds of things have been known to cause a
flicker and failure of the display. There are other parts involved
that could be acting up. The repair is moderate to difficult, if
you check out the iFixit.com guides for the model series.
An Apple Store with Genius bar could diagnose the issue in a
Store location in the US or Canada, by appointment, for free.
Otherwise an independent Apple Specialist may, for a fee.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Trackpad freezes and goes haywire

My computer is 4 years old and in decent condition. For the past several months my trackpad has been freezing/going haywire every time I use the computer. This generally only happens while I am online. For example, I will be scrolling down, and it will freeze, the cursor won't go anywhere no matter how much I rub the trackpad. Or the cursor will start jumping around and the page will scroll up and down on its own. Usually I just run my fingers back and forth across the trackpad quickly for a few seconds and it will stop. But the problem will happen again a few minutes later. This happens on all sorts of websites, using Firefox.
I can use an external mouse with no problem, but obviously that's not always possible.
    Thank you.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
    Try resetting the PMU http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431
And try resetting the PRAM and NVRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
And try cleaning the Trackpad. Take a clean lint free dampened cloth and wipe the Trackpad. Fingerprints, lotion.. takes a toll.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Hold the Shift key while your computer is starting to start in safe mode. Safe mode disables the advanced graphic drivers and third-party apps, so if it's a software problem, this will disappear.
If your screen looks the same, your graphic card or display are damaged. Take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller to have the computer repaired. In both cases, this will be an expensive repair

  • Cinema display goes black upon resolution change in Windows XP

    Greetings
Earlier today, I updated my ATI X1600 Radeon to the latest Windows Catalyst drivers and to the Catalyst Control Center from ATI. Even since, whenever a Windows application (games, in this case) tries to change the resolution on my external Apple Cinema Display (designated as the main monitor in the ATI Catalyst Control Center, with the MacBook Pro display disabled), the display goes black, and the monitor power lamp starts to flash.
If I unplug the external Cinema Display from my MacBook Pro, my MacBook Pro display activates, and displays whatever it is I was trying to launch, so the problems is somehow related to the Cinema Display, even if the new drivers are causing it.
This happens regardless of my Catalyst Control Center settings, such as scaling the lower resolution to fit the screen, or keeping it the original size, with black borders around. The problem does not occur when I launch games using 1600 x 1024, the Cinema Display's native resolution.
Any ideas what might be causing it, and how to resolve it?

Update on my situation: when I tried to change the resolution manually in Windows, I encountered the same problem. Now, whenever I connect the Cinema Display to my MacBook Pro, the same thing occurs: the screen goes black, and the power lamp starts flashing, even though I've changed back to 1600 x 1024.

  • MacBook Pro retina display goes black while outputting video through HDMI to external monitor??

I frequently connect my MacBook Pro to my 42inch Panasonic TV to watch movies/videos. I use VLC media player for all my playback. The problem I'm running into is that when I put VLC media player into fullscreen mode on my external display, my retina display goes black (I can still see the finder bar at the top and when I mouse down the dock appears but the rest of the display shows all black. If I click on Safari it will open but I can't see it on my MacBook display unless I take the external display out of fullscreen mode.
I would still like to be able to do things on my MacBook while video is playing. I've played around with the display settings but they're pretty limited and I can't figure out how to get it to work the way I'd like. I've seen people having up to 3 or 4 displays hooked up, I'm just trying to hookup one. I would consider this a severe limitation of OS X if I'm not able to separately manage the displays. Hopefully there is a setting or something I'm just not seeing. Thanks.

Yeah, fullscreen mode still doesn't play nice with multiple monitors. The common workaround is to stretch the window out to the edges of the screen instead of using actual fullscreen mode.

Have most recent macbook pro connected to thunderbolt via thunderbolt cable.  Occasionally when I close my laptop the thunderbolt display goes black and does not come back on---even in response to keyboard.  Help

    Hello QuinnDev,
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.  It sounds like you are trying to use your MacBook Pro with a Thunderbolt Display in closed clamshell mode (MacBook Pro closed), but sometimes the display doesn't stay on.  I found an article that talks about closed clamshell mode.  You would have to fulfill the following requirements to use your display this way:
    Requirements for closed display mode:
    Power adapter
    External keyboard, mouse, or trackpad
    External display
You can find all the steps and the full article here:
Mac notebooks: How to use your computer in closed clamshell (display closed) mode with an external display

    I hope this helps!

  • Mac mini 2011 display going black

I just got my new core i7 + SSD 2011 Mac mini. I noticed during initialization of Lion and during a reinstall of Lion that my screen would flash to black for a second or two. A few days after installing Lion I still get this random flash a black a few times throughout my sessions. It usually only does it 2 or three times withing 10 minutes of turning on the the computer, then it seems to be fine. One time it flashed a few times and then the display went all distorted and pixelated. To fix it I ended up having to disconnect my 24" Cinema display and reconnect it. This whole display issue is really annoying.
I found this so I hope Apple is working to fix this issue:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15843631#15843631

Shutdown the Mini, turn off the display, disconnect and reconnect all of your power and display connections ensuring that they are fully seated and snug.
It could also just be that the display going to sleep and then rewaking.
    1. Go to: System Preference / Energy Saver and check to see if your Display Sleep slider didn't maybe get set to under 3 minutes.
    2. Go to: System Preferences / Exposé & Spaces / Exposé and see if there isn't a Hot Corner set to "Put Display to Sleep" that you pointer might be going to.

  • Toshiba LCD 46G310U display goes dark

I have a Toshiba 46" LCD model: 46G310U that when first plugged up has a perfect picture on all inputs. However after a few seconds to a few minutes the display goes dark with a horizontal line across the screen about half way down. The horizontal line will fade out after 25-30 seconds leaving the screen dark(back lights still works). I have replaced the inverter board, the T-Con Board, replaced most of the larger capacitors on the power board, I have even replaced the cables that connects the T-Con board to the main board. If I unplug the tv and leave it unplugged for several minutes when I turn the tv back on, the picture is back and purfect for the first few seconds or up to a couple of minutes, then the screen goes black again. Please any help would be apprecieated. Thanks.

You may want to find an authorized service provide to repair the TV.

  • Touchscreen goes haywire every few minutes on Model 15-n071nr

it seems to be happenin more and more often. When I use my laptop the toucscreen becomes unresponsive or does things as if someone is touchhing it however i never actually use the toucscreen, only the mouse and keybpoard.
There will be rather lare quarter sized dots going vertically along the same spot to the right of the midline of the screen as if someone is touchin it there. I have to close te lid then it all works fine again when I open, but lately it starts going haywire aain witin a few minutes. Sometimes it does seem to do thhis wen I touch the OUTER edge of the laptop (not the screen) to adjust the angle of the lid/cover. I am pretty sure the laptop is not more than a year old. But it may be I bought it a little over a year ago....Dont know if I still have the reciept but I might.....
And my other HP laptop the G and H key work intermittently. In some apps tey work fine in and in oters they dont, like right now. Wats odd is if I type anoter letter, ten back space over it, then I can type a G or H fine no trouble. Very odd
I used to love HP but I have A:LOT of trouble with thier laptops over the last few years. I wont buy another one.

    Hello @tiffcady,
I understand that the TouchScreen feature of your notebook computer is not working as it should, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To correct the functions of the TouchScreen, I recommend following this document on Troubleshooting Touch Screen Issues in Windows 8. This should help to return your TouchScreen configuration back to default settings.

  • Run iPhoto slideshow on 2nd display without 1st display going black?

    Hi there,
I can't seem to find a clear answer on this one. I have just connected a 2nd display to my mac mini via the thunderbolt connection. When I put iPhoto 11 onto the 2nd display desktop and run a slideshow it plays on the 2nd screen but my 1st screen goes black, which isnt ideal as I want to be able to carry on working on my 1st screen.
Is iPhoto 11 able to run a slideshow on a 2nd display without 1st display going black? If not, is there a way around this by using other software?
I have the 2nd display set up in extended mode not mirror.
    I am running OSX 10.9.2.
    Many thanks,
    Andy.

Is iPhoto 11 able to run a slideshow on a 2nd display without 1st display going black?
    No.
There may well be, but it's not possible with Aperture either.
    Alternatives to iPhoto's slideshow include:
iMovie is on every Mac sold.
    Others, in order of price:
    PhotoPresenter  $29
    PhotoToMovie  $49.95
    PulpMotion  $129
FotoMagico $29 (Home version) ($149 Pro version, which includes PhotoPresenter)
    Final Cut Pro X $299
It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs. However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Pro X is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.

  • Display goes off and comes back only when Satellite A210 is restarted

    Hi,
Satellite A210 displays goes off now and then and comes back only when the machine is restarted.
Usual runtime runtime 30 or 45 mins
    Please advice
    # Is this a hardware problem or software?
    # Does some one else faced same problem do advice?
Machine is year and a half old runs windows vista basic that comes with it.
I have reinstalled the display adapter drivers also the problem remains same

    Hello
Have you tested an external monitor on the notebook?
If the external monitor works fine it seems to be an internal display issue and must be replaced.
Are you running the factory settings on your notebook or have you installed your own Windows version? Before you go to an authorized service provider you should restore the factory settings to determine if its a hardware or software problem. With the factory settings all should work properly and if not in my opinion its a hardware problem.

  • Is my Video Card/Display going bad??

My display has 30-50 vertical columns, from top to bottom, across the screen. Within each column, are numerous vertical lines, like bar codes, that are pink in color. This situation happens at start up before any applications are opened. The computer(apps) works like normal, mail, safari, etc, except these lines are always in my view, on the desktop or window/page. If I "grab" a page to move it , then the whole page turns pink. If I click off of the page and then return, the page looks normal again, except for the columns of pink, vertical bars.
Is this my display going bad or video card?? I have the ATI Radeon X850 XT video card. If it's the video card , do I replace with a new old stock (ATI Radeon X850 XT) or can I replace with a newer, better card??
Any help GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!! I'm Very Novice at this!!

    Hi-
Sounds very much like a baked graphics processor.
Have you tried cleaning the dust from the card?
Is the fan on the card clean and rotating freely?
If you are at all mechanically inclined, removing the fan and reapplying thermal compound is worth a try before laying out serious cash.
As for replacement, the X850XT was the top card ever offered by Apple.
It is also THE most rare.
Because of this, they command high prices:
    http://www.welovemacs.com/6613594r.html
eBay also has a number of them for similar prices.
    Radeon X850XT
can I replace with a newer, better card??
    Only one option for better.
A flashed (converted PC version) Geforce 7800GS:
    http://www.barefeats.com/mutant3a.html
At less than half the price of the X850XT, it is worth considering:
    Geforce 7800 GS.
