Display hard to close and wont get past initial boot screen - turns off

I didn't drop it and if someone else did, they won't fess up. It doesn't look bent anywhere.
I turn it on, it has grey boot up screen with apple and rotating timer thingy. The hard drive is noisy like it is in a constant read mode and then it just turns off.
I would suspect the HD is shot, but why is the lid hard to close now? Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Bring it to an Apple store or authorized Apple repair center.

  • My macbook pro wont get past the grey screen at startup. Help!!

After doing a run of the mill software update on my macbook pro (running snow leopard) it froze during the "moving items into place" stage. I forced a shut down and now it wont get past the grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel. I have tried booting from the original DVD but it still freezes. When I boot it in verbose mode it seems to stop at "jnl: unknown-dev: update_fs_block: error reading fs block # 3597880! (ret 5)", the Apple AHCD Disk Queue manager :: set power state is timing out and there is a disk I/O error. I have tried to reset the power manager (not sure if it worked or not) and I have also tried clearing the PRAM (again, not sure of that worked). When I try to look at the hard drive using target mode on my imac the hard drive doesn't come up but the DVD does. I'm concerned that my hard drive is fried. Any suggestions?

It would help to state in your post which remedies you tried that didn't work.
Start here >  OS X Lion: If you see a gray screen at startup
If nothing there helped, try Starting up in Safe Mode
Safe Mode deletes some system caches that may help.
A Safe Mode boot takes longer than a normal boot so be patient. Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple menu.
If a Safe Mode boot didn't work, since your Mac has OS X v10.7 installed, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys so you can access OS X Recovery built in utilities. The startup disk may need repairing.
Tip:  Hold down the Eject key while starting up your Mac to eject a disc.

  • POWERBOOK G4 14 1.33 WONT GET PAST THE APPLE SCREEN

I have a powerbook G4 14 inch 1.33 mhz processor with 256 mb of ram. The screen will not get past the apple screen. I have tried 3 seperate hard drives none of them would boot past the apple screen. The disk drive is broken, I will be replacing it shortly to put a OS X CD or disk warrior cd in it. Does anybody know what would cause this? I reset PRAM, PMU and tried booting in safe mode. It gets to the apple and then the little circle spins and spins and it doesnt load..

Heres some history of the computer. I orginally put a 12 gb hard drive cuz it came with no hard drive in it and it was working great, but then became slower and slower until it got stuck on the apple screen. i tried 2 other hard drives and they didnt work. i then replaced it with a brand new 60 gb hard drive. i also bought a new optical drive and put that in because the optical drive never worked. i have tried two different ram sticks. i have tried pressing shift,c,option none of that works. option makes it freeze on the boot screen. open firmware works...command S did work until recently...command v does not work...reset pram and nvram. reset PMU. I AM AT A LOSS. is there something i forgot to leave connected during the process that could be causing this? I get USB BOOT ERROR 0 1 1 in open firmware. I DOUBT its the logic board, because it makes the chime and I can get into open firmware and the start up screen.

  • Photoshop Elements 10 Trial wont get past "accept license" screen.

    Hi
    On a Mac. OS: 10.6.8
Have downloaded a trial version of Photoshop Elements 10.
    Tried launching it.
Get a window asking me to accept the license for Elements Organizer.
    Click accept.
    Window disappears.
Window reappears - again asking me to accept license for Elements Organizer.
Click accept - window disappears when I click "Accept" - then just reappears, etc...
    Can't get past this window.
    Uninstalled the software.
    Re-downloaded it.
    Exactly the same thing.
    Tried the online chat-help thing.
    Waste of 15 minutes.
    Was sent here.
(Just a thought, but I previously had a trial version of elements 9 - but uninstalled it - could that be messing something up?)
    Thanks

  • Can;t get past the boot screen (formerly, "I'm having a keyboard problem")

    Hello there,
This is my first post on this forum, and I'm here to ask for some help with my first build.  The main problem at this point is that after I power on the system, it goes to the Platinum screen and says "press <Tab> to enter Post, or <Del> to enter setup" but neither of these, nor any key on the keyboard will respond.
I have not installed the OS yet, since I can't get to the Bios to do anything else.
I hope I included enough info on my signiture.  Let me know if you need anymore info.
    Eclayton
PS  I changed the title of this thread, from "I'm having keyboard problems"  since I think that was misleading, and not the real issue

    Hello e,
Good to see you up and running. Good luck loading up your operating system.
The reason I wanted you to get your SATA drive connected to your motherboard SATA 3 connector is just that sata 1/2 connectors are unlocked. There is no way around it. SATA 3/4 connectors are locked and will give you better reliability and flexivility later on.
Updating your power supply may not be a bad idea if you got the cash. You have only 18 Amps on your 12 volts rail which is quite a bit lower than the recommended 24 Amps on 12 Volts for high end system such as yours.  Use the one you have for now and see if it can get you into Windows running everything that you want and then make a decision. With no OCing you may be able to seak by if you get decent electrical power from your utility company.  Your system voltage and stability once running will let you know.
    Have fun,
Yep, got the OS up and running (it wasn't recognizing the hard drives at first, since I had strung up the wiring real nice, and neglected to plug in the power to them!  D'oh!) But that was easy to fix.
Got the card reader loaded now, so everythings in place.
But, I think the power supply is an issue and will get a bigger one.  The message I get says there's not enough power for the video card, so to keep my hardware safe from damage, it is only running within my available power.  That's good for now, while I load my AV, and other programs, but I'm going to the store to buy that power supply...Do you think the above one I posted is worth a shot?  It seemed a better solution then the one I have in the case...
Oh, one more thing, what does Locked and Unlocked mean, with SATA 1/2 and SATA 3/4?  I'll switch them when I put in the new PS, but just wondered what that meant.
Hey, thanks a bunch.  This has been fun, and you've been a big help.

  • URGENT, Phone wont get past start-up screen and iTunes doesnt see it

My 3.0.1 problems just got WAY worse!!!
After the 3.0.1 update I started having the same issues as everyone else until today. I noticed that my clock was just picking a random time( hours and minutes were off) and would not take to my manual setting of the time or on auto. So as i have been doing several times throughout the day, i performed a hard reset. Only this time it never came out of the reboot/start-up apple symbol screen. I then attempted to perform the hard restart several more times to no avail. I am now stuck with a phone that will not boot nor can i connect it to my computer. While connected, iTunes does not detect it and i can not do a restore either. any suggestions would be great but i fear for the worst!!!

Try to connect in recovery mode and restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
If you can make it, restore "as new iphone" , maybe your backup contains corrupt files and these would be copied back using the "restore from backup" function.

  • My imac is making low beeping noises when I turn it on and wont go past a grey screen; whats wrong?

When I turn on my computer it goes strait to a grey screen with the apple and starts a low beeping. The beeping does not stop so I rebooted it several times and everytime it turns back on, it starts to beep again.
    What could be the problem?

Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Note: It is possible that the SMC could encounter an issue that may cause  unusual system behavior typically related to the symptoms described  below.  In some cases, resetting the SMC may be the only correct method  to resolve the issue, however, an SMC reset should only be attempted  after all other standard troubleshooting has been performed.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC.  Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep.  Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
If your Mac appears to be running normally but isn't responding, force the computer to shut down by pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds. Note: You will lose any unsaved work in any open applications.
For Mac portables experiencing issues related to the MagSafe power adapter and/or battery, try:
Unplug the MagSafe power adapter from the Mac and the wall power socket for several seconds.
Shutdown the Mac.  Physically remove and re-insert the battery (if it's removable) and startup the Mac.
If the issue is still not resolved after following the troubleshooting items above, an SMC reset may be necessary.
After performing normal troubleshooting, these symptoms may indicate that an SMC reset may be necessary:

The computer's fans run at high speed although the computer is not experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated.
    Lights
The keyboard backlight appears to behave incorrectly (on Mac computers that have this feature).
The Status Indicator Light (SIL) appears to behave incorrectly (on Mac computers that have an SIL).
Battery indicator lights, if present, appear to behave incorrectly (on portables that use non-removable batteries).
The display backlight doesn't respond correctly to ambient light changes on Mac computers that have this feature.

The computer doesn't respond to the power button when pressed.
A portable Mac doesn't appear to respond properly when you close or open the lid.
The computer sleeps or shuts down unexpectedly.
The battery does not appear to be charging properly.

  • How do I get past the request to turn off Itunes.

    Hi people,
Sorry if this question has already been answered. I tried to find some help on the forum but the question may have been asked a different way and I couldn't find it.
So my problem, I have downloaded xcode_3.2.6_and_ios_sdk_4.3.dmg and it is sitting in my downloads folder.
I have a Mac Mini with Mac OS X Version 10.6.8
According to all messages, everything should be fine for me to install.
So I click on the .dmg file and it churns away for a while showing various progress messages. All goes well until it has about 2 minutes to go. Then a popup appears that says I must shut down ITunes before the install can finish. Well, I don't have ITunes running.
I have checked everything I can to make sure there is nothing connected that may somehow be accessing ITunes. I have even re-booted the computer and done nothing but run the install. It still stops at 2 minutes and says I have to shut down ITunes.
The only way I have been able to get out of the popup is to force a shutdown using the Apple icon on the top left of my computer screen.
Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get xcode to install?
    Thanks
    EastWind

    You must close:
    - iTunes
    - Simulator
    - Xcode
    - Application Loader
...and...run Activity Monitor, locate and kill 'iTunes Helper', then try installing again.

  • Function Keys stuck on can't get past initial F1 screen

I have an ancient ze4900.  The CMOS battery has been dead for years, but I always hit F1 right when it boots and everything was fine.  Now my son set the num lock on so F1 is not functional at that point, rather it changes the brightness.  Is there anyway I can reset num lock off, so that F1 will clear the initial screen and I can boot again?
EDIT:  Just to be more clear, because the CMOS battery is dead, the machine asks me to press F1 to continue or F10 to go to setup between the BIOS and when Windows starts.  The num lock is stuck on, so that when I try to hit F1 the screen gets dimmer.  Is there a way to reset the num lock from the BIOS on this system?  Is there a hardware reset that might clear the num lock setting?  This seems like a really dumb reason to have to buy a new laptop!

Sorry, but the only help I can offer is to bump this higher so other people will see it.  Can you boot into safe mode?  Please post a solution when you find it.  Good luck!
