Display/HD doesn't shut off

Hello all.
I bought a refurbished black Macbook, a couple of weeks ago, and am loving it. Unfortunatly, there is an intermitant problem with the display. When I close the Macbook, sometimes the display will not shut off, nor will the computer go into sleep mode. This is a waste of battery, and since I have to go longs periods during the day without recharging, it is quite annoying.
I was wondering if anyone had had this same problem, and if so, how did you fix it? Is there a sensor that may have gone bad? Thank
Macbook 13.3" black   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Refurbished

The way the sleep switch works on the MacBook is that there is a magnet in the edge of the display bezel and a magnet sensitive switch located in the palmrest area above where the Kensington security port is located on the left edge (near the headphone jack). If you have any magnets on your refrigerator, go get one and you can see that if you place it on the edge of the palmrest area over the Kensington port, the mag switch will trigger and the Mac will go to sleep. At least it should. If yours doesn't, then there is something wrong.
The magnet in the lid may have shifted slightly and be out of alignment with the mag switch. If that is the case, it will probably have to go back to Apple for repair.

  • After upgrading to Yosemite my mac doesn't shut off. The off button doesn't work

After upgrading to Yosemite, my mac doesn't shut off.  The off button no longer works. I want to shut the thing off.

    Jehreth,
On my Macbook Pro you have to hold the power button down a moment till a little window pops up and asks what you would like to do. Also you can go to:
    (  ) Menu > Shut down ...
to shutdown your Mac. Or are you saying that these options do not work?
    Hope that helps,

  • Apple Display doesn't shut off with new Mini

I have a brand new 2009 Mini hooked up to my 23" Apple Cinema HD display.
When I shut down the Mini, the power on the display does not power down.
I used to have this same display hooked up with the same mini DVI to DVI connector hooked up to my late 2006 MacBook. The display used to shut down when I shut down the MacBook.
There is absolutely nothing different in my setup between the MacBook and the new Mini as far as connections and cables as I'm using the same cables.
Is anyones display powering off with their new Mini?
I wouldn't think that the mini DVI out would be any different on the MacBook as compared to the new Mini. But apparently there is unless I'm missing something.
I don't really want to live with this as all of my computers shut down automatically at night using the Energy Saver control panel. With the new Mini, the display remains on all night.
Maybe I should have bought a new MacBook Pro 13 to replace my older White MacBook 13.
    Ideas? Suggestions?

I would hate to say that this might be an upgrade issue with recent updates.. I 'used' to be able to power off the monitor (touch the switch on the side and the light goes off) but no longer able to.
And to confuse the issue, the 23" ACD power switch is now acting like the Mac Pro's power switch.. While the Mac Pro is running a lengthy process, I'll often turn off the monitor if I am away for a few hours but now, when I touch the ACD power button, the Mac Pro responds with a "shut down, sleep or log off" kind of query.. Well that is certainly new to me..
Does this happen to yours as well?

  • Pavillion dv9730us no boot, no video display, starts to boot, shuts off after a few seconds

Pavillion dv9730us does not boot, no video display, (tried external monitor while toggling  F4, to no avail...)
Tried the troubleshooting proceedure - (hard reset: pulled battery, discharged "start" button , connected AC power,
no difference. Repeated the hard reset after pulling the memory modules, and re-installed one at a time in every possible combination, with no change.
The laptop attempts to start up, with lights and fan, but only for a few seconds, then shuts off, and repeats this process.
I noticed that the lights stay on if I press "esc" for some reason, but the fan does not stay turning. Other than this, there is no change, (no screen, no beeps, etc.)
Any insight here would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you for your informative response. This confirms what I suspected, and it corroborates what I was told by a friend who had the same model, with a similar dilema. The repair price tag  seems feasible enough,  given that the machine's features are contemporary enough to make it worthwhile to give it a try. I would be greatful for any details on the specified repair options, and if there are any "workarounds" to help prevent  such a meltdown in the future, assuming such repairs can reasonably be achieved. Thanks again. (Whatever's right ain't wrong!)

  • IPod doesn't shut off, doesn't synchronize, doesn't repair

    Hi,
I just managed to transer my music from my iPod to my computer. During that process I lost all my music on my iPod, which caused me already a lot of trouble. Now finally all that music is in my new iTunes library (I changed my pc). But now the iPod doesn't synchronise with iTunes. I already tried to repair him, but there always comes an error.
I have noticed that a lot of hints about this item involve shutting down and restarting the iPod, which I tried... but didn't work. I can push the middle button for as long as I want to, he has no intention at all to shut down.
So, I can't repair, nor restart, nor synchronise my iPod anymore.
Does anyone have any suggestion about what I can do? Or is he really totally messed up?
I just installed iTunes on my PC yesterday, so that's the latest version.
ps: I took my iPod with me on holiday where I plugged him in to reload. But since then (1,5 month ago) I sometimes hear a strange ticking-noise coming out my iPod. It sounds like little electric pulses. I guess that's not really normal, but has it anything to do with it, or could that be dangerous?

Sometimes to turn my nano off, I have to let the battery die. It wont shut-off. I don't have an answer for you, because I'm having the same sort of problem. I wonder if it a design problem. could it be built in obsoletion?
My wheel moves when it chooses and most of the time it doesn't. I can't reset because the wheel problem. I have never dropped it or got my nano wet. Short of buying another nano I'm not sure what to do. HELP.

  • Speaker doesn't shut off when earphones connected

I recently purchased a new 2nd generation ipod Touch however when I connect the earphones the speaker doesn't turn off. I need to disconnect and reconnect the earphones four or five times before the speaker will turn off. The earphones are playing the music when they are plugged in but so is the speaker. It's extremely annoying. This is my first ipod so have I set something incorrectly or is there a problem with my new ipod, any ideas?

    Hi,
I don't have a 2nd gen myself but would suggest the following course of action -
    1. Ensure that you are pushing the earphone plug *all the way in*, I know it sounds daft but this does happen occasionally. Push firmly, you won't break anything.
    2. Check Settings > General > Sounds and check that the appropriate settings are enabled. (not sure if these differ from 1st gen but have to ask).
    3. Try a reset, press and hold both buttons, ignore the "Slide to turn off" instruction and let go only when the Apple logo appears, the Touch will restart.
    4. If the above fail, take/send it back
    Good luck,
    Dud.

  • TS1538 iPod Touch with blank screen that doesn't shut off and not recognized by iTunes?

I opened the app "MyTown 2", and it stayed on the opening screen for about 5 minutes - WAYYY too long! So I tried to close the app. A slight grayscale sort of film "slid" down over the opening screen, and then it went to this light gray, completely blank screen. It's been that way for over an hour - no matter what I do, can't do a hard shut down, and the device is not recognized by iTunes at all. It's completely DEAD!!!! Is there any hope? Anyone have a clue?

Following the instructions in this procedure to the letter. Here they are, with emphasis on some easily overlooked requirements:
Disconnect the USB cable from the iPod Touch, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release only the Sleep/Wake button.
Continue pressing and holding the Home button while you reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.Note: If you see the "low battery" screen, let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then start with step 2 again.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears (iTunes icon and USB connector) release the Home button.
If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the "recovery mode" alert ("iTunes has detected a phone in recovery mode").
Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you do not see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
Select the device in iTunes and choose "restore from backup".
If you still can't get it to work, you have done all you can and only Apple will be able to help.

  • Displays backlight doesn't turn off completely!?

When I fade off the backlight of the display there is a spot in the center where i still can see what is displayed, the rest is dark. It seems also that this spot grew in the last time a bit.In the dark this spot is clearly more light than the rest of the display. its about the size of a golf ball.
Anyone who has the same "problem"? Any suggestions?
    Thanks for the help!

Are you sure it is not just a result of room light bleeding in through the back of the case where the Apple logo is? With the MacBook turned off or sleeping, look at the dark screen while holding the MacBook up to a window. You will see that outside light from the window shines through the Apple logo and the screen. Could that be what you are seeing?

  • Shutdown doesn't shuts off the laptop in Windows 10 (64 bit)- FAN, Power button Light still on

Hello. I have HP pavilion p045tx. Recently I upgraded to windows 10 update (64bit). When I shut down my laptop, the screen turns off but the power button light, fan etc still keeps on running. Previously I was running windows 8.1 home edition. I didn't face any sort of problem like this. Please give me solution what to do.

Download version 9 or 10 of the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) Driver.Navigate HP's Software and Driver Downloads site (http://www8.hp.com/us/en/drivers.html) to find the latest approved driver for your model.  Filter by version, selecting Microsoft Windows 8.1 on the dropdown menu.  Look for the download in the "Driver-Chipset" category.  If an MEI driver with a version number starting in 9 or 10 is listed, download it.  [Version 9.5.24.1790 1.5M (http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp66001-66500/sp66228.exe) will work for most models.]If an MEI driver with a version number starting in 9 or 10 is NOT listed, download the appropriate driver directly from Intel (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/search?keyword=intel+management+engine).  [Version 9.5.24.1790 1.5M (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/23091/Intel-ME-9-Management-Engine-Driver-for-Intel-NUC) will work for most models.]Download the Windows 10 "Show or Hide Updates" Troubleshooter Package (http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/2/2/F22D5FDB-59CD-4275-8C95-1BE17BF70B21/wushowhide.diagcab).Change the Windows Update Services setting from Automatic (Delayed Start) to Manual. In the Control Panel, select Administrative Tools and open Services.Scroll down to Windows Update and double-click it to bring up its properties.Click Stop to stop the service from running.Change the Startup Type to Manual and click OK.Install version 9 or 10 of the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) Driver.  If you receive a dialog warning about replacing a newer version of the software, accept it.NOTE: You do NOT need to uninstall version 11 before installing version 9 or 10.  The presence of some version of the driver is required in order to "upgrade" (or in this case downgrade) it.Run the Windows 10 "Show or Hide Updates" Troubleshooter Package and hide updates to the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) Driver.  (Doing so will block your system from automatically reinstalling or showing updates for version 11 of the driver.)Change the Windows Update Services setting from Manual back to Automatic (Delayed Start).Restart your computer.Rejoice!  You can finally sleep and shut down again.   --DanG

  • What do I do if my ipad doesn't shut off?

It appears that I can't even shut down my ipad using both buttons. What other options are there?

If none of the steps in this article work for you, restoring the device might be your only way to fix this.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/assistant/
Restoring the iPad is the last step in that article, but check and make sure that you have tried all of the other things first.
When you try the reset - you have to wait until you see the Apple logo on the screen before you let go of the home and sleep buttons.

  • Laptop mode tools shut off keyboard

When I have the laptop mode tools daemon enabled in rc.conf, the keyboard will stop functioning if a) I'm in the console and b) I leave the keyboard alone for ~10 seconds. There's no freeze, because the cursor is actually still blinking, and if I keep typing it doesn't shut off. I assume this is the LMT disabling my keyboard after some degree of inactivity-- of course, I can't get back after this, because the mouse doesn't function in console and the keyboard can't reactivate itself. I don't see anything relating to the keyboard in the config, is this a bug?
I have a Macbook 6.1, by the way... I'm not sure if the Mac's keyboard is any different from another laptop's in how it transmits data.
EDIT: If I start X, then go back to the console, this still happens, but it gives a message this time:
    PCI_PM_runtime_suspend():hcd_pci_runtime_suspend +0x0/0x20 [USBCore] returns -16
I think this is indeed LMT shutting off USB support when it's not in use-- but on the Macbook, the keyboard needs that function. 'options usbcore autosuspend=0' in modprobe.conf does not fix this, so I'm stuck at this point...

Did you try turning off USB suspend in LMT itself?
    in /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/usb-autosuspend.conf:
    CONTROL_USB_AUTOSUSPEND=0
