Display in Black after a bunch of update

Hi,
I just did a bunch of update (10.6.8 combo V1.1...Pro stuffs and so on...). Update successfully but when restart, it just a black display on my cinema display! No matter how I Force Shut Down and re-boot, but still the same! Hard disk is working and restart sound from the machine is just fine, but nothing display on cinema.
What happened to it?
Help!

When you change something on your computer, and then it stops working, the most likely problem is not CAUSED BY the changes you made, it IS the changes you made.
So you need to do a few things.
If you can, boot to the Installer/Utilities DVD, either the latest "Full Retail" (not for a different-model Mac) you have or the one that came with your Mac.
"A Mac that cannot boot to an appropriate system DVD had a Hardware problem."
Answer only the "What Language" question and DO NOT press continue. WAIT for the MenuBar to be drawn (a quarter minute) and choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
Select your regualr boot drive. Check the SMART status for "Verified".
Click ( REPAIR Disk ) NOT just repair permissions.
If you get errors that cannot be repaired, write them down and post them here.
Do not change Graphics cards or any other Hardware until you resolve this problem, or your problems will compound and get out of control (and very expensive to fix).

  • Mac Pro display remains black after start up.

My 2008 Mac Pro display remains black after start up.  It is plugged in properly and the light comes on, but the screen stays black.  It first started doing this about a week ago, but after a manual restart or two, it would start up properly with the display working.  Today the display has remained black every time I've tried to start up.  Any suggestions for troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Safe Mode uses a very simple way of talking to the screen -- it does not even load the screen driver, and it uses a very common low resolution.
If it does not work that way, it simply does not work. You need a replacement graphics card.

  • 10.9.3 - Display is black after waking up from sleep

I have a Retina MacBook Pro that I connect to two monitors at work in clamshell mode, 1 via HDMI and 1 via the MiniDP -> DVI adapter. Typically, before leaving work I put the machine to sleep manually before unplugging everything.
Since upgrading to 10.9.3, almost everytime I open the lid of my MacBook, the display is black and will never initialize. It's not off as I can see that the backlight is lit. I can't find any key combination that does anything other than just holding down the power button.
This is a serious issue as it essentially prevents me from being able to continue any work from my desk to home.
I've done the usual, cleared SMC, PRAM.
Below are the logs prior to waking up the machine. It seems that it attempted to wake-up some 10 minutes before I opened the lid and didn't find any displays. It then goes into this weird mode.
The 4:28 event is the "wake up" while it was still in my bag.
At 4:41 is me actually opening the lid and getting the black screen.
Any advice? This did not happen in 10.9.2, even once.

Ok, more information for anyone that might care. The wake-up seems to be the familiar dark wake in order to go into hibernate mode. Except now, it's a death wake. Looking at the logs, I see that it happens exactly 70 minutes after sleeping, even though hibernatemode = 0 (which shouldn't hibernate at all!)
So my power settings look like this:
    Currently in use:
    standbydelay         4200
    standby              1
    halfdim              1
    hibernatefile        /var/vm/sleepimage
    darkwakes            0
    gpuswitch            2
    disksleep            10
    sleep                10
    autopoweroffdelay    14400
    hibernatemode        0
    autopoweroff         1
    ttyskeepawake        1
    displaysleep         2
    acwake               0
    lidwake              1
standbymode is 70 minutes, what a coincidence. I'm going to try setting it to 0 and see what that does.

  • 27" Cinema Display Stays Black after cold boot or sleep

I'm wondering if I'm alone here. After applying the LED firmware update, I am unable to get my Apple 27" LED or Dell u2711 to recognize the connection to my radeon 5870 after a wake from sleep or cold boot.
To get either monitor to work, I have to unplug both of them and plug in a DVI monitor to the radeon and cold boot with that, once the machine is booted, I am able to plugin the 2 minidisplay port connections and both monitors work fine.
Once I shutdown though, I have to do the same song and dance the next morning to get the displays to work.
The interesting part is once the radeon and display port monitors stop talking, The process I listed above is the only thing that works to get them "talking" again - I cannot even just plug a DVI monitor in when the machine is already on, or use the keyboard shortcut for detect displays.
My console logs report 2 different things.
    1. The Dock is reporting breakpoints and errors to CGSGetDisplayBounds
    2. THere are lots of errors relating to the AppleHDAController.cpp

For a lot of people the trick seems to be to reset the pram a certain amount of times. Yesterday I gave it one more try, reset it 5 times in a row and hoped it helped. Started the machine today after shutting it down the evening before, black screen. Resetting pram once again and everything works.
There's a threat (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=559906) running parallel to this one concerning the same problem. For the original poster of the question the solution was to run Disk Utility, check for problems and repair disk permissions.
Neither of this works for me.

  • Adobe Bridge 1.0.3 displays white boxs after 10.4.6 update

After the update Bridge displays white boxes in the window. I have done all the standard stuff like delete prefs, rebuild caches, I even reinstalled it. I also ran the Adobe security update that was mentioned on another thread no luck. I have posted this problem at Adobe also. Anyone know of a fix?
    Patrick

Turns out it was bad ram causing some of the trouble and trying to fix it only caused more of a mess.

  • Display stay black after wake up

    Hi,
I hope there is someone who could help me, I have Macbook 2011 Early running Yosemite 10.10.2 and I have problem with my display turning back on after the sleep mode.
When I open the lid my display stay's black but everything is actually working, I'm able to login but everything is still black. This only happens when I close the lid, if my macbook is still open in the sleep mode than is everything absolutely fine. I had also blue screen two times, any idea what it could be please ?
I have tried to completely reinstall Yosemite, reset PRAM and SMC but none of this worked.
Any advise please ? Is it something with the hardware ?
I pretty much desperate and out of ideas how to fix that.
I will be really happy for any advise.
    Thank you !
    Best Regards,
    Michal

If you have not already, reset PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and if that does not help, reset SMC
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
which is unplugging the iMac and reconnecting using a precise procedure. You should disconnect ALL cables when you do this. If you have been using power strip, connect the iMac's power cord directly to a wall power outlet for this test. Power up with nothing connected except for the power cord. Once startup completes, add just your keyboard/mouse. I don't know how often this problem occurred, but try running the iMac that way (before connecting any other peripheral devices) to see if you can get it to recur. If you cannot, add back your peripherals (one at a time if possible), and again see if you can get the problem to recur.

Yesterday I updated my Iphone 5 with the new iOS 8.1.3
Unfortuntely now my camera shows only black. Also I am unable to switch from Picture mode to any other.
Front Camera works once every 10 attemps. Camera system is very unstable (Freezing Picture, slow,..)
    Tried reset. Not successful.
Need help urgently please. Want to take pics of my babies :-(
Contacted Apple support 4x and asked for a call back. They wrote back that they cant rech me under my number.. Others can..

    Hello mrjanek1,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues with you iPhone 5 camera after updating. It looks like you are on the right track, as you have come from the most relevant article for this issue:
Get help with the camera on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203040
You see a closed lens or black screen
If you see a closed lens or black screen when you open the Camera app, try these steps:
Make sure that there’s nothing blocking the camera lens. If you’re using a case, try removing it.
Force the app to close, then open the Camera app again.
Restart your device, then open the Camera app again.
If your device has a front and rear camera, try both cameras by tapping camera swap icon. If you see the closed lens or black screen on only one camera, take your device to an Apple Retail Store or Authorized Service Provider for more help.
If your issue persists, please follow the last step to take the device to an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider for inspection and additional diagnosis.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • 'prohibited' sign displayed on startup after 10.6.2 update (MacBook 2006)

    Hello all,
I just updated my MacBook to 10.6.2 using Software Update. When it restarted, the Apple logo displayed as normal, but after about 10 seconds of the progress indicator being displayed, it showed a 'prohibited' sign -something like this, but monochrome:
    http://static.bigstockphoto.com/thumbs/0/6/4/large/460205.jpg
It continues to show a grey screen with the prohibited sign, and a continuous progress indicator. I have restarted (by using the power button on the MacBook) several times, but I cannot get it to get past the 'prohibited' sign.
I have also tried holding down 'option' on startup, which allows me to see the MacBook's HD listed as a startup volume, but clicking on this to select it results in the same progress-indicator & prohibited sign loop, which never ends.
I would be grateful for any assistance in diagnosing what has happened.
The only unusual circumstance I can think of is that during the initial restart, I happened to pull out the VGA adaptor which normally connects the MacBook to an external display. I can't see how this would have affected the system update though.

You have a driver that didn't get moved, a device that is connected but lacks drivers or isn't compatible.
One reason I always favor recommend a clean install after backup and clone so you know you are just using the new OS, and that the hard drive was formatted and tested with latest version before install.

  • Video playback suddenly black after ATI video driver update?

Totally bizarre - I updated to the latest drivers using RadarSync.  Now videos from my flip (mpeg4) all play back as all black, unless I move the "Display Properties/Settings/Advanced/Troubleshoot/Hardware acceleration" slider to "Disable all DirectDraw and Direct3d" or lower.
Anyone else encountered this issue where videos start playing as all black?  It seems to be independent of the decoder (xvid or ffmpeg) or video player (Microsoft Video player, VLC) application that I use.

my display suddenly turns black during work! It happens about every 30-40 seconds. Then I have to press to lower the F1 Botton 2 or 3 times and then the F3 Buttonn several times until the light comes back. What happened? How can I fix this problem, which came after several days pause/standby?

  • Display stays black after waking due to USB plug-in/out

    hi,
i forget to unplug the external mouse at times after shutting thsi pup down. when i unplug it AFTER sleep it wakes up again...but the screen stays dark (eventhough at night i see a phantom image very very faintly)
inow i have the mouse coming in through a hub (kesington 4 port, no external power)..soemtimes i can unplug the mouse no prob from that...sometime it still makes the comp awake...with the darkened screen...
a solution often is closing, waiting for sleep, opening...
is there an easier way? (increase brightness? stay alert and unplug BEFORE closing?)
at times i have also had to reboot...
    any info would be grrrrreat...thanks!
    pedro

i have this exact same problem. it happens with anything usb i plug in, or at least it does it with my old usb mouse, printer, and external hard drive. its done it ever since i had the machine about 2 and a bit years ago. ive also noticed it does it with my bluetooth apple mouse. when the pb is asleep with the mains power connected, if i press the mouse button by accident with the display closed it wakes the computer and then if i open the display it sometimes has issues bringing the display back on.
I don't know what causes this whether its a fault or just a design flaw in hardware or software, but i've just learned to live with it and try and remember not to unplug anything usb whilst its asleep.
Your phantom image in the background is caused because the actual display is on and the lcd is making the image, but the backlight isn't turning on so unless ur in the right light you wont see the image, you'll get the same if you just turn the brightness down to the bottom on ur display. the image is still there just without the backlight.
    hope that helps a little.

  • Viewer Screen Black after Mavericks and Apertutre updates

Hello All, I have updated to Mavericks on my home iMac that is a few years old, and a new one at work that is 6 months old. Everything was fine and then I updated to Aperture 3.5. Now on BOTH machines, I am able to see all of my images in browser view fine. In split view the images in the filmstrip at the bottom of the screen are still fine, but the main image being viewed is black. In full viewer the image is completely black. It will indicate loading, show all photo info at the bottom of the viewer, but load as a black image.I can use an external editor PS5 without issue. I have completed the three step for the library first aid. When opening Aperture, the image may flash on the screen for a split second, and then show as black.
Apple support only seemed interested in having me sign up for Apple Care, even though this is a software bug, so this left me a bit unhappy. As a photographer that really needs Aperture running correctly, I'm at a standstill and may need to move to Adobe as an emergency solution.

Weird it is happening on two separate machines. Was the library from one machine copied to the other? What camera and are the originals Raw?
Try making a new empty library and import a few images into it, what happens? If it still fails there try running as a new user or from the Guest account if you have that enabled. Start Aperture and add a few images to a new library, what happens?
Also try looking at one of the original files in Preview, is it OK there?

  • Laptops do not display On Screen Display volume bar after Hotkeys Features Integration update

    Hi,
I have also included most of the following information in response to a post, on the same subject, for T series machines.
    I have 2 machines that are also affected by this problem, an R61 (8932-CTO XP-Pro-SP3 32-bit) and an R500 (2714-CTO XP-Pro-SP3 32-bit).
System update recently presented me with Hotkeys version 3.87.0000 on both of these machines, and I let System Update update the drivers in the vain hope that Lenovo had fixed this problem that has been previously reported as affecting many other series and models.
    No such luck.
The only difference that I would like to  report is that, for me, the last version of the Hotkey Features Integration package that displays the volume bar on my Windows XP machines is: 3.84.5000. I have all versions of the Hotkeys drivers saved on my machine and was therefore able to try them all out to verify which one was the last one that worked for me.
On both of the above mentioned systems, the version of Access Connections that is running is version 5.97.
On the R61, the version of Power Manager that is running is version 5.20.
On the R500, the version of Power Manager that is running is version 5.13. (System Update does not show version 5.20 as an available update on this machine.)
It would be really nice if Lenovo could finally fix this problem.

  • MBP Display turns black after login

    Hi,
When I wake up my MBP (15'' 10.4.10, Core duo, ATI Radeon), login, the screen
sometimes (may be every 4th time) turns black, but the MBP seems to be awake.
When I put it to sleep and wake it up again, it works fine. This seems to happen
more often after using a video projector.
May be the password was entered incorrectly, may be not. But it did not turn back
    to the login screen either.
I don't have this issue with my iMac (different use though).
    Any advise?
    Thanks,
    Dirk

Your issue sounds like the same issue i have on my 17" MBP. Are you waking then having to log in to wake from a screensaver?
I have my computer set to ask for authentication after it wakes and every once in a while, i'll wake my computer, and the authentication window immediately pops up, i proceed to put my password in then it goes back to black, although sometimes, it will the show the mouse cursor.
I dunno what happens, but I have noticed that when I do wake it up, the optical drive (i think) makes a noise as if it were reading, and that's usually when i get the black screen.
Anyone have any fixes? Could this be a video driver or hardware issue?
