Display issues after opening Mail.app

Greetings, all -- I am the personal tech support for my mother in Missouri, though I live in Los Angeles. I bought her a MacMini with OS X (Panther), she has a DSL connection and her WiFi is set up. I operate on a G4 OS X (Tiger), and typically, once she's all set up, she's good. However, as I was walking her through how to email a music file, her system has done something I can't pinpoint to advise her to correct. My system is just different enough not to be able to recreate the problem, nor find the same menus to hunt for solution. The problem happened following this sequence of steps:
She inserted a music disc into the disc-drive, opened iTunes from the Dock, and confirmed that the disc mounted.
She then opened Mail, composed new, then used the "Attach" icon to navigate to the song-file on the inserted CD; she highlighted it and pressed "return" to activate.
At this point she informed me that all addresses in her address book opened up and her computer froze -- wasn't responding to anything. She rebooted by unplugging the Mini, and restarted. When she rebooted, she ejected the CD, and reinserted it. She then opened iTunes, then closed iTunes, then opened Mail. At this point, she informed that the text and menus on her screen had become about 3x usual size, and several windows were too large as to be partially offscreen and unusuable.
Attemped fixes included "Display/Resolution" (set on 600x800-ish), which did nothing -- as well as "Dock" which did change the size of the dock appropriately, but not the rest of the screen. I have a "Show View Options" on my system that allows me to manipulate desktop icon size, font, etc., which her system doesn't have.
Any insights? THANKS!
MacMini   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

She messed with it until she got it back to acceptable. I'm not sure what she did, as she's not sure what she did. The woman is a MASTERmind of unresolvable problems. ;^)

  • Whenever I open Mail.app, my iMac crashes after a while.

    Hi guys,
whenever I open Mail.app on my iMac (Mid 2010, OSX 10.8.2) crashes like I suddenly lost power. Did anyone expirience such a problem before? The iMac runs fine, currently I'm using Thunderbird without problems.
    What I alread did:
    - Reinstall OS
    Best regrads,
    Tobias

Unfortunately, it's pretty hard to find what actually caused the issue. Especially if it has been fixed now.
If you did a Migration, it would only transfer user data settings and files over. From what i can understand the reason why the Mac switched off was just a fluke, that in result caused the issue with Mail.
What i would suggest, if the enviroment you live in is dusty, is to try and benchmark the Mac with any benchmarking application. It might have been caused by overheating. If the Mac reaches to a point where it switches off, it would be best to go to an Apple Retail Store, or an Service provider, to get it cleaned from all the dust.
Other than that... Mac OS is developed in a way that a re-installation will fix most issues straight away. In very rare occasions will you need to fiddle with the OS manually.

  • How can I automatically open Mail.app message attachments after downloading

The subject says it all, I think.
    My wish #1
Automatically Opening Mail.app message attachments after downloading
    My Wish #2
At least having the Finder automatically default to the folder I just downloaded to after completing the download.
Is this an option in Leopard, at least?

Very clever. But unfortunately that doesn't seem to work in Tiger.
Then again, I stil presume that when you do that, a ile is still downloaded and appears somewhere on your hard drive. If you "save as" the file opened by preview, you probably still need to go back to the place where the file was saved and delete it.
Then again again, if Preview is peeking into a Word or Excel attachment, it may not actually be "downloading it" first?? Strange. If it was a jpg file attachment, on the other hand, it seems more likely that some sort of file would be downloaded to the hard drive as a result of that drag and drop of the paper clip.
I did find that drag and drop capability interesting, though. Even in Tiger.
Oh well. I have to start looking at scripts.
When I downloaded that Automator application that was supposed to "close all open applications", I was surprised that it didn't work. Says it works with TIger. ???
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/
Was I supposed to import it into Automator as an "action" and save it as an Automator application and then open Automator and click "run" for that action each time I wanted to use it? Seams a bit cumbersome.

  • Can not open Mail App in IOS 8.1.1

Since I installed IOS 8.1.1 versión today I have not been able to open Mail App. When I try to open it the screen turns white for a few seconds and then it crashes. I would like to know if there is any solution to this, as checking my mail is escential for my job.
    Thanks in advance,
    Alejandro.

    Hello Alejandro,
For issues with Mail crashing, I would start with closing out of Mail completely by double tapping the Home button and then swiping up on the app. Try opening Mail again to see if it opens up properly. If it continues, try removing the email account and then open Mail to see if it works properly. Then add the account back in. Take a look at the articles below for steps on how to do both options.

hi, we are using mac mini's for our developement purpose. connecting the same through using Real VNC. Mac mini's are late 2009 and 2010. Now we have upgraded them to 10.8.5. after upgrading having display issues after launching the simulators, we are unable to view the icons we need to move the simulator (into different places) to view the icons.
Also we are having Mac book pro's (Late 2009 & 2010) after upgrading them to 10.8.5. Unable to launch the mac, getting only white screen with apple icon.
Let me know is there any specific Hardware (Graphic Cards) we need to use for the same.
Please provide me the early solutions.
    Regards,
    Suresh.

    Hi, try this first...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • Display Issue after 10.9.2 update

After updating my Macbook Pro with Retina to 10.9.2 -- My display flickers for a second after sleep and or blank screen and then goes back to normal. Has anyone else been having display issues after updating?

Yes similar problem here: I have a MacBook Pro, 15 inch Retina, Mid 2012, and when I connect a secondary display via HDMI (and also HDMI-to-Thunderbolt) then the external monitor becomes the main display.
I have not figured out on  how to switch back to former settings. My guess: it's a bug. A quick search confirms that many others have secondary display issues since 10.9.2
(Steve would have fired those lazy punks, who failed to do sincere testing before release …)

  • Icons for apps are not being displayed when I open the App store, just getting gray color boxes

Icons for apps are not being displayed when I open the App store, just getting gray color boxes

Did you update your operating system?  If so, did it solve the problem?  I have not updated my OS because so many people complained that the newer Os's had problems.

  • Opening Mail.app also opens iCal

This is really strange. When I open Mail.app on my MacBook, iCal launches as well.
Not sure why, but this started yesterday. I did a bunch of installation yesterday including installing Virtue Desktop, Parallels and WinXP. Not sure if that is related.
I also enabled mach_inject for my account and then disabled running these commands:
    sudo niutil -appendprop "/" "/groups/procmod" "users" `id -un`
and then later removing with this:
    sudo niutil -destroyval "/" "/groups/procmod" "users" `id -un`
Not sure if that's related either.
Anyone have any clue why this might be happening?
    Thanks in advance,
    Michael

    Did you also install MailTags?
If so, that explains it. MailTags interacts with iCal for setting up todos. I've included a preference setting to control this however -- go to mailpreference and select the MailTags prefs - (may have to click >> on right. Select the iCal tab.

  • Suddenly cannot open mail app on my computer

cannot open mail app? Has always been fine, much of touched something I'm not familiar with??

Anyone have any suggestions?? I've run iTunes for years now, this last update "killed" the ablity for it to run automatically on my Win7 machine.  I've unloaded EVERTYTHING apple on my computer 3x times now, reloaded, as admin - even paid for cleaners to make sure.  Run all the Microsoft patches, updates, everthing I could find...NOTHING seems to be working.

  • I can't open Mail App.

I can't open Mail App.  How can I do to open  it?  Thanks.

What happens if you try to open Mail from Finder > Applications?

  • When I open Mail.app, iCal opens as well...

When I open Mail.app, iCal opens as well - there are no prefs that I can find to turn this off... it started a while ago.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Rico

MailTags will open iCal by default when launching Mail. This can be turned off in the MailTags Preferences. Open Mail's prefs, locate the MailTags Preferences (you may need to click >> in the top right) and select the calendar tab.

  • Is there a way to send email without opening Mail.app?

    Hello,
I would like to be able to send email using either an Applescript or a shell script that would send email without opening Mail.app. The ideal solution would be using an account and settings (such SSL encryption of my password) that are stored in mail.app. However, if that is not possible, I could set up another email account to be used just for the purpose I have in mind so I don't have to worry about my password being exposed in clear text.
I've seen Applescripts that open Mail.app and then hide it in the background but the key requirement for my particular need is that Mail.app never open during the send process. I synchronize my email between my iMac and my Powerbook using Chronosync so it is critical that none of the files that store or index the actual mail in Mail.app be opened so as not to alter their modification dates.
    Thank you,
    James

If you upgrade to 10.4 there is a widget that will let you compose and send mail without opening Mail.
    Here's two other options.
    1. Does your isp have a web based email?
    2. Download a program like thunderbird for email. When you configure it end phony information for incoming mail and only fill in the correct infor for outgoing mail.
