  • T410s External Display and Safely Remove Hardware Problems

I have two problems with my new T410s with Windows 7.  First, I use it with an external display.  It works fine when I set the dispaly settings to Projector Only and set the power settings to Do Nothing When I Close the Lid.  However, when I restart the computer the screen image on the external display is often mis-sized, does not cover the whole screen, and has part of the image cut off.  If I open the lid and change the display setting to computer only, then back to projector only it works fine again.
Any ideas on why it will not hold the proper setting when I turn the computer off?
The second problem is common to both my wife's X201 with Windows 7 and my new T410s.  If you click on Safely Remove Hardware/Eject Mass Storage Device both computers will tell us it is now safe to remove our device.  However, if the device is one of our compact external backup drives the device's light will still be on and the disk will still be spinning, so it seems it cannot really be safe to remove it.  This happens even if we wait a minute after the safely remove indication to see if the external drive shuts down after a short delay - it doesn't!
As a result, my wife and I are shutting down our computers whenever we want to remove an external storage device.  Any comments or ideas would be welcome!

For anyone who is concerned about the "safely remove hardware" issue noted in my original post, I have done more research and found that Windows 7 maintains power to the USB ports after safely remove has been executed in order to allow devices like MP3 players to continue charging after they are safely removed.  Windows XP actually shut off the power to the USB ports and this is what I was used to until I got a new T410s with Windows 7.
This means an external HDD's disk will also keep spinning.  However, the safely remove sequence is SUPPOSED to cause the disk's heads to move away from the disk and return to their at rest position, so there should be no damage to the HDD if it is removed even though the disk is still spinning.
Since I have no way to assure this is happening I am still turning off my computer and making sure the disk has stopped spinning before I remove my USB HDD.
I would appreciate comments from people who know more than me about this issue, especially if my info. above is not correct!

Has lock rotation been accidentally enabled within the control centre? If you swipe up the screen is there a circle with a lock symbol & if so is is greyed out or white - if white it is enabled.

  • ZEN displaying "Hardware Problem" mess

I got my zen micro in January but did not start using it seriously until a few days ago. It is probable that the power in the battery was very low as I did not charge in much before starting to use it.
After about 20 mins of use I got a message saying that the system was shutting down and it froze in that state.
I removed the battery to reset the machine but when I put it back again I got the message "Hardware Problem".
I have tried the trick of holding the switch ON while replacing the battery but I still get the "Hardware Problem" message. I have tried this with the mains charger plugged in but still get the same thing.
The manual suggests reloading the firmware. I have downloaded the latest version but cannot load it as the PC will not recognise the ZEN as connected.
Any ideas of how to fix this?
    What is worse...
I have tried to log this as a support call on this site but when it comes to entering the product ID (in the case of the ZEN it is DAP-MD0004, ZMIC5DBLUE) the system rejects it so I cannot get to log the call.

Hardware problem is a very serious error, and usually there's no way around it other than getting the player repaired. If you're under warranty that will be OK, but if outside of warranty the repair might be quite expensi've.
Hopefully a moderator will spot this post and let you know how to enter your product details.

  • "DPC_watchdog_violation" happens almost everyday, tried re-installing, is this a hardware problem?

Hello, I'm from Hong Kong. You guys must be wondering why I'd post in a foreign forum instead of local one - I cant find any support from my local forum. I cant even find this model form my local Website.
First of all, I brought this laptop (Envy 14) in 2013 from my so called "University Notebook Scheme". But once I got my first Envy, problem arised - my screen keeps flashing. I went back to the store and replaced it with a new one. Yet, this "new one" keeps having "DPC_watchdog_violation" almost everyday, no matter what Im doing - browsing the Net, using iTunes, even when Im using Microsoft Office for my assignments.
I've tried many solutions suggested: updating software & drivers, and reinstalling the windows; nothing works. Instead, more problem arised throughout these 2 years: my screen starts to flash, sometimes I cant even turn my computer on (power button on with a black, turned on, screen). I cant update my windows - "Failure configuring Windows updates, Reverting changes" and got stuck in the update loop.
I'm scared to do anything with this laptop now, even typing this "problem discription". I stored every files into the Dropbox for safety purposes. I save my Word documents every minutes, try to run as less programme as I could.
I've been wondering if this is a hardware problem, a serious one. Some of my classmates also got this Laptop from the University Scheme as well, most of them reported with the same issue (especially for the screen/display issue). With the notorious HP's repair and warranty service,  I'm discouraged to sent my Laptop to them. I've even heard that I'll be charged even I'm still under warranty.
P.S. sorry if I have made any grammatical mistakes.

  • IMac refuses to boot properly - hardware problem?

Hi all, I'm having some problems with my iMac (purchased last October) and was hoping some kind soul could shed some light.
    Here's where I'm at now.
    - The iMac doesn't boot. When I press the power button, it chimes, but then nothing happens and I just see the white/grey screen.
    - I have disconnected all 3rd party peripherals, and only have original keyboard and mouse attached.
    - No matter what keyboard combo I try, nothing happens either. I managed to eject the disc once by pressing the mouse button, but no other key combos work.
    - I must have rebooted about 30 times now, and only twice did something happen:
    1. Once it sat on the white screen for a bit, and then displayed a grey folder with a questionmark in it, but then nothing else happened.
    1. Once I did get it to boot from the CD, and I got to the installation screen. At this stage I tried a couple of different things. First I tried Disk Utility, and the HD is indeed listed in the sidebar (although it's listed as 'disk0s2' rather than 'Macintosh HD'. When I picked the First Aid tab, both Repaid Disk Permissions and Verify Disk Permissions are greyed out (i.e. I can't press them). When I went to press Repair, I got the following error message.
    +Verify and Repair disk 'disk0s2'+
    +Checking HFS Plus Volume+
    +Invalid node structure+
    +Invalid record count+
+Catalog file entry not found for extent+
    +Volume check failed+
+Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit+
    +1 HFS volume checked+
+1 volume could not be repaired because of an error+
So, I could do nothing in Disk Utility. I then thought "well, I'll just surrender then and reinstall OS X", but when I went back to the Install screen and proceeded, and it asked me where to install the OS, there was nothing to choose from. Usually 'Macintosh HD' is listed along with any other disks. Not this time. So, I shut down the computer again, and now I can't back to the screen (i.e. it refuses to boot from the CD again and instead just spits out the disc).
So then I phoned Apple. But because I don't have their service plan (and the free one only lasts 90 days after purchase), he couldn't help much. He did say though that if it spits out the disc, it could be hardware problem, and my warranty would cover it.
So, should I just give up, realise my HD is screwed and my data is gone, and hand it in for service? Or can anyone here shed some more light on my situation?
Even a "yes, you're screwed, hand it in" would suffice, if that's indeed where I am.
    Thanks,
    Hanna

Thank you, dwb. I did just manage to boot from the DVD again, but again I'm seeing the same problems.

And I have been backing up, but I just got back from vacation, so my last backup is 2 weeks old and the things I was worried about saving was the work I did on my vacation photos and video. Also, you'd be kicking a girl when she's down, which would be even worse.
I think I'll definitely hand it in now, and ask the tech to rescue whatever data he can. I don't care if it costs me a bit, if it means rescuing my vacation photos.
Thanks again, you've been most helpful.

My Zen Vision:m has been rebuilding after every startup so I decided to use the recovery tool to fix the problem. In the middle of updating the firmware, the process froze, my player rebooted and now it displays an error message that just says "hardware problem". I can't turn off the player, and it just returns to the error message when I reset, not allowing for me to reboot in recovery mode. Any help would be gladly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Potential keyboard hardware problem T410

    Dear all,
since yesterday I have been experiencing a problem with my T410, which is potentially due to
a hardware issue with the keyboard.
A few specific keys are not working anymore. These seem to be the Power On key, the Fn key,
the Alt Gr key, and the ThinkVantage key.
I am assuming it is a keyboard hardware problem, since I cannot use the Power On button to
start the laptop. Fortunately, this is possible using the fingerprint reader start-up.
When the laptop is running (using Windows 7) everything is working fine, except the mentioned
buttons. I cannot access any Fn button functions (e.g. the reading lamp) or Alt Gr symbols (e.g.
the @ symbol which is on my keyboard on the 2 button) or power down with the Power button.
    I tried various easy fixes:
    * Making sure all drivers are up to date
    * Remove and reattach the keyboard
    * Static discharge procedure (unplug all power, 10 presses and 30 sec holding of power button)
    * Checking Bios settings
    * Replace battery
Unfortunately, these did not change the situation.
I am wondering if the simultaneous malfunctioning of these specific buttons points to a certain
hardware problem. I hope a replacement of the keyboard might solve this, but it could be an
    issue with the motherboard.
    Any hints would be welcome.
    Thank you,
    MH
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Dear all,
thank you for your suggestions. Unfortunately, it was not the keyboard. It appears to
be a more serious problem. In fact, since yesterday the laptop does not boot correctly
anymore. The boot process is started, but I only end up with a black screen, and some
randomly colored first few lines at the top of the display.
It all points to a major malfunction. Unfortunately, the warranty expired 3 months ago...

  • Zen MicroPhoto: "Hardware Problem&qu

I've had my player a little bit over a year. When I turn it on it only displays the message, "Hardware Problem."? I've yet to find anybody who's addressed this issue, and I've no idea what actual steps to take (I'm completely technologically stupid, anyway, and I'm afraid I will mess something up). ?I'd rather not lose all my music...
    Thanks!

You'll probably have to send it in to Creative to get it fixed. Since it's a hardware problem there's not much you can do about it yourself.

  • Bluetooth not discoverable iOS 7 - bug or hardware problem?

Just got an iPhone 5c and Bluetooth is not discoverable at all. For example, in my car when searching for a device it does not find it. Likewise, if I seach for it on another iOS phone, it just doesn't exist.
I have an iPhone 5 with iOS 7 and that connects fine to the car with no problems at all. I'm thinking this could be a hardware problem, but just wanted to check if it's been reported as a bug by anyone else?

    A bit more on this:
When Bluetooth was switched on, but Airdrop set to Contacts Only, the phone was discoverable by the car but did not work correctly - it connects via Bluetooth but the car display shows no signal and cannot make calls through in car audio.
With Bluetooth switched on but Airdrop set to Off, phone is no longer discoverable by the car
Frustatingly, I don't have access to both the phone and car to test the final scenario of Bluetooth on and Airdrop set to Everyone to confirm what I suspect will be the case.
If the final scenario does work, this has to be a pretty significant bug in the software, right?

  • Drive fails SMART status-"this drive has a hardware problem"

I recently did a major update of software and applications to my MacPro. (it's the first model of 8 core that came out). When I do a major update like this, I make a clone using Carbon Copy Cloner of the system drive to an external drive so I have a backup until I verify everything is good on the updated internal. I have 4 hard internal drives and have been having no trouble from them. However I noticed in Disk utility that one of the non-system drives is displayed in red and gives a warning that reads, "This drive has a hardware problem and can't be repaired. Backup the data and replace the drive". It also shows the SMART status as "failing". So I have everything copied to another drive.
I'll gladly replace the drive. However here's my confusion: when booting from the system cloned to the external drive, this same drive shows as being perfectly fine in Disk Utility. Both system drives have OSX 10.6.6. the only difference is newer applications on the internal system drive that reports failure (mostly audio related applications: Pro Tools, Reason, Roxio Toast).
So does anyone have any thoughts? I've read some other threads and they just report the failure and say to change the drive. I've not seen anyone else have one system that reports failure and another that doesn't.

SMART status failed is usually caused by too many suspected Bad Blocks. Some of these blocks may be unjustly accused of being permanently bad.
If you have the liberty to re-initialize the drive, doing so with security options "Zero all data, one pass" will ensure that (if the test completes without error) the drive once more has 100 percent good blocks. The process takes several hours to complete, longer if there are a lot or bona-fide errors.
It is also possible that the drive will produce "initialization Failed", in which case it should be retired if out of warranty, returned for replacement if still in warranty.
A drive that has ever seen a SMART status of Failed may get more Bad Blocks in the next six months. Or maybe this afternoon. If possible, it would be good to reduce your day-to-day use on this drive, such as making it a backup drive rather than using it all day every day for 'live" data.
