Display Modes and Aspect Ratio

I have a project that contains 4:3 and 16:9 footage. It is being prepared for 4:3 VHS release as well as 16:9 DVD release. For the DVD, I have exported all footage out of FCP from a 16:9 timeline. The VHS master is being sent to get captioned and the subtitle files for the DVD will be generated from this same master.
I originally thought I could just drop the video in its entirety onto two tracks in DVDSP, set the display mode of track 1 as 16:9 letterbox and the display mode of track 2 as 16:9 pan-scan. Then I could use chapter markers and stories to navigate as needed depending upon the aspect ratio of the original footage. The problem is this doubles the size of my DVD. I didn't think using the same footage on two tracks should increase the size as it is simply referencing the same file, but alas it does.
So, if instead I put only the true 16:9 footage on track 1 and only the pillarboxed (originally 4:3) footage on track 2, this solves the DVD size problem but screws up my subtitle timings, which I can certainly shift as needed but there are a LOT of small pieces in this project and it jumps between aspect ratios a lot so it will necessitate a lot of subtitle shifting.
Is there another better way to approach this? Hope my description was clear enough.

Hi Steve, thanks for your reply. I did not explain well. I am not planning to put both 16:9 and 4:3 versions on the DVD. What I am doing is using only 16:9 encoded video on the DVD. This is achieved by placing all footage (16:9 and 4:3) on a 16:9 timeline in FCP and encodeing to widescreen using Compressor. When I do this, the footage originally shot in 16:9 comes through unaltered while the footage originally shot in 4:3 comes through with pillarboxing.
Ultimately, I need widescreen footage to appear unaltered on 16:9 monitors and letterboxed on 4:3 monitors and I need the footage that was originally shot in 4:3 to appear pillarboxed on 16:9 monitors but unaltered on 4:3 monitors.
Based on the way I am exporting my footage from FCP, if I use a single track in DVDSP and place all the footage on that track and set it to 16:9 letterbox, I believe the footage that was originally shot in 4:3 will get postage-stamped, since the pillarboxing was created by FCP when 4:3 footage was placed in the 16:9 timeline.
The way I have been ensuring things appear correctly is to place ONLY the footage shot in 16:9 on one tack in DVDSP (set to letterbox) and ONLY the footage shot in 4:3 on a second track in DVDSP (set to pan-scan). They have to be on different tracks to allow for different displlay modes but that is necessary to insure things appear properly on all viewing possibilities.
Perhaps there is another way to set things up in FCP and export differently? Please let me know if you see another solution.

  • Video support: resolution, portrait mode and aspect ratio

    I have been playing with a friend's PowerPC-based mini (while I wait for Leopard to come out) and have some pre-purchase questions:
    1) Do the current Core 2 Duo mac mini models support the VESA standard Preset Timing Mode of 1680 x 1050? (That's not listed on his older mac mini and would affect my choice of monitor.)
    2) Does the current mac mini support portrait mode with any monitor at all?
    3) The specs list maximum resolutions of 1920 x 1200 (16:10) with DVI and 1920 x 1080 (16:9) with VGA. I'm guessing that is related to bandwidth of the cable and does not mean that all output to DVI would be at the 16:10 aspect ratio and all output to VGA would be at the 16:9.

    As far as the resolution of 1680x1050 I cannot answer you. I have a Power PC mini as well as an intel mini. The resolutions available change based on the display connected, but neither of mine offer that particular resolution (the 17" monitor I have does not go that high on the PPC mini via VGA and the intel mini is hooked up to a 40" LCD TV via HDMI...those resolutions are either 1600x900 or 1920x1080)
    Neither my monitor nor my HDTV list that particular resolution (1680x1050) as being available, regardless of what they are connected to, so I cannot say whether or not the mini is capable of driving a screen at that resolution.
    As to portrait mode, on both the older and newer minis in the display preference pane there is the option to rotate your image...90, 180 and 270 degrees. Mounting your monitor horizontal or vertical should not pose any problem as far as I can see.

    for your first problem you can reffer to Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getScreenSize() after that you can easily calculate the ratio..

    I am creating a slideshow, using iMovie '08, for a party I will be attending. I am going to make copies for several guests but I am lost on the details. The master copy of my project is 1920x1080 HD. So, in what resolution and aspect ratio should I make my guest copies given that each guest will have a different television and aspect ratio setting?

    Send the file to iDVD and create standard definition DVD's.

  • Quality and aspect ratio with FCE and iPhoto

    Project started by importing hundreds of slides shot by different cameras with difference settings. Slides were imported into i-photo where I used the slideshow function to make several segments.  As I was choosing the photos and dragging them into slideshows I cropped them all into 16x9 ratio so they would all be uniform.  I then sent to QuickTime movie using the built in iPhoto export button and selected “custom export” setting with DV/DVCPRO-NTSC compression with quality set to “Best” and aspect ratio to 16x9.
    Then imported into FCE and did serious editing (music, effects, titles, etc.).  When finished I tried exporting as both a QT self-contained movie and QT conversion (using DV/DVCPRO and 16:9) but the quality is terrible and when I make a iDVD the picture is squeezed and distorted into a 4:3 ratio despite the fact that the IDVD is set to 16:9. I have spent over a month on this project and have fellow travelers waiting for my “creative” touch.  Can anyone tell me where I went wrong on both aspect ratio and quality? Thanks.
    PS: Am using MacBook Pro, OS 10.7.4 FCE 4.0.1 and iPhoto-11 9.3.2

    I'm not shure - but I can share my thoughts
    I tried exporting as both a QT self-contained movie and QT conversion (using DV/DVCPRO and 16:9)
    I DO NEVER - Use Export as QuickTime CONVERSION
    I DO - Share as QuickTime .mov - straight off
    I had problems with 16x9 until I understood that
    • I had to select type of project as WideScreen in FC
    • Browser Window in FinalCut E and Pro - can extend far to the Right with several Columns. One Column states Anamorphic. When set my material to this. THEN introduced it into TimeLine. Can not be done in after hand.
    • Export as above
    • In iDVD there are TWO places to set 16x9
    - When creating a NEW iDVD Project - SELECT --> WideSrceen
    - In iDVD Project / Projectinfo [ Shift+cmd+I ]- ALSO set 16x9

  • Letterboxing and Aspect Ratio problem

    I'm authoring a feature film DVD. All menus and movies are 16:9
    When I play the Simulator in "16:9" everything is fine.
    When I play the Simulator in "4:3 Letterbox" my menus are letterboxed as desired, however every movie is for some reason squished into 4:3.
    Any ideas?
    The Video Asset box in the Inspector tells me all my movies are 720x480 16:9.
    All tracks show in the Track Inspector as display mode 16:9 Letterbox.
    All Menus show in the Menu Inspector as Aspect Ratio 16:9
    Also of note, one of my tracks is used both as a movie and as a motion menu. Although it's the same track, with the simulator in 4:3 it's correctly letterboxed as a menu, yet squished as a movie!
    I exported from a 16:9 Anamorphic project in FCP (as a QTmovie set to Anamorphic NTSC DV) and imported straight into DVD Studio Pro. (I've noticed on these forums most people go through Compressor. I didn't. Would that be the cause of my headache?)
    The movies display in my QuickTime Player as 16:9 clips with a size of 853x480

    The Simulator is very far from accurate. Burn a disc, then pop it into a DVD player.

  • S-Video out and aspect ratio

    Hi,
    I'm think of getting the Apple Video adaptor for use with my Sony Widescreen TV. As I understand it, this adaptor outputs an S-video signal that mirrors the iMac's built-in display.
    Will this display in true widescreen on my TV or will it be in a 4:3 aspect ratio? Is there a way of choosing between the two?

    What I really want to know is: will my iMac output s-Video that is anamorphic widescreen. i.e. will I be able to fill my TV's screen without "stretching" a 4:3 image?
    Or, is the iMac's s-Video out limited to Standard PAL or NTSC 4:3 without support for anamorphic enhancement?
    I know that the iMac supports 4:3 and 16:10, but widescreen TVs are 16:9.

  • Digital Photo Professional and Aspect Ratio on DPP Version 3.13.51 (3.13.51.0) OS X version 10.8.5

    I recently up graded to DPP  Version 3.13.51 (3.13.51.0)  and it seems have lost the capability when cropping using the trimming tool to convert the cropped images to their cropped aspect ratio.
    Shoot events with two cameras 6D and 50D. Always shoot RAW. At the end of an event may have as many as 1000 images to edit and convert to small sized JPGs for display on WEB.  I bring in the RAW, select the RAW images to be converted, then from the Collection TAB edit the RAW. Editing may include cropping a 3:2 image to 4:3 or 5:4 or 2:3 or 3:4 or 4:5 or Custom. Once I have completed the editing and cropping  I apply the BATCH Process to convert the RAW images to JPG and resize and rename. Here is where the issue appears. Before upgrading to DPP 3:13 I would use the following conversion selections :
    File Format Exif- JPEG
    Image Quality 10 Embedded ICC Profile
    Resize (in Resize I would always select )
    900 pixel Width and 600 pixel height with Lock Aspect Ratio
    Then would name the file
    With those parameters the converted and saved images would convert to the proper sizes with proper Aspect Ration as Cropped and Trimmed. I would always line up the images so that the 3:2 ratio would show in the selection window (5472 x3648) then I would enter the new desired size  (900 x 600) . The 3:2 images would convert to 900 x 600 and the images cropped to 5:4 Aspect Ratio would convert  for example to 642 x 514  (the proper ratio for 5:4). 
    With the new version 3:13 the image cropped to 5:4 also is converted to 900 x 600 rather than the desired 642 x 514. 
    This is a real conundrum for my workflow. It works the same way even if I uncheck the Lock Ratio Option on the Resize command options. 
    How can I fix this? If uninstalling and reverting back to the older version of DPP is my only solution, what are proper steps for uninstall and reinstall of older version and maintain data structure. 
    I have Lightroom but have never been able to get a workflow as efficient as the DPP flow for converting hundreds of RAW to small cropped JPGs.

    I don't use DPP enough to help you with your issue. But Lightroom is really great program for batch processing. It is much much better than DPP, so you may want to look at it again since you arealdy have it.

  • Preparing photos for iPhone 4 - resolution and aspect ratio

    Is there an optimum photo size when preparing photos for display on the iPhone 4 or does the iPhone optimize the size automatically upon import? Also, what is the recommended aspect ratio?

    Dan, I did a quick check with one of my pictures. Normally I prepaired my photos in Photoshop to a size 1920px : 1280px with embedded Color Profile (sRGB) for iPhone 4. Then I save it in a folder. With iPhoto I import to a album then sync with iTunes. Now for a test, i sent one photo from the iPhone via email to me, opened in Photoshop to see any difference to the original photo on my computer. It´s the same size and same quality. Only the color profile is not embedded. Maybe iPhoto-iTunes does a small color correction for the iPhone display.

  • Horizontal bands and aspect ratio problems

    Sorry to ask yet another question, but I'm stuck again....
    Two major problems here:
    1. Thick horizontal bands of distortion across the video when burned on a DVD and played back on both the computer and TV. It's like the video is chopped up into strips and each is offset a bit from the next. This is most noticeable when there's movement, especially when the camera is panning.
    I've found a few posts on this around the board, but all of them were solved by exporting to quicktime instead of quicktime conversion, which I already did...any more ideas?? It plays fine in Quicktime by the way.
    2. Aspect ratio issues. The video is 16:9 (it exported from FCE squished, which I solved following these instructions: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1431891&tstart=150 (using the dimensions specified by the second poster)), but it plays on both the apple cinema display and the widescreen TV with letterboxing. On the computer monitor it looks right, but there are thin black bands at the top and bottom (thinner than normal letterboxing), but on the TV it looks squished horizontally, with full letterbox bands. Any idea what's going on??
    I'm using FCE HD (version 3.5.1) on a Mac Pro running OS 10.4.11. Any advice would be HUGELY appreciated!!!

    1. Regular standard-def video, shot on miniDV tapes in two different cameras and imported through capture in FCE. One camera shot in 4:3 and I zoomed in to make it 16:9 in FCE, but the problems are identical in the footage from both cameras so I don't think that's a factor. The file is now an .mov file exported to quicktime from FCE. DVD was burned in iDVD (version 6.0.4) using one of the widescreen menus, with the video added by drag and drop.
    2. Same video as above, same DVD, played through a DVD player connected to the TV.

  • CS3 Encore and Aspect Ratio

    Hi,
    I am trying to close caption an MP4 file in CS3 Encore for DVD output.  I Alt clicked the video track and browsed to the .scc caption files in the properties tab.  I had the aspect ratio of SD NTSC Widescreen (1.2) on the video, but when we view the DVD it's squished into 4:3 and doesn't display correctly.
    Any ideas?

    This may be a bit of dumbo pondering but I've got a couple questions:
    My HV20 camera has a DV 16:9 setting. I always use the HD setting. But if I captured such footage, what Sequence Settings would one use? If DV Anamorphic, doesn't that stretch things out? So maybe a Custom choice in Frame Setting of 640x360?
    What is the reasoning for the DV Anamorphic Seq Setting to use the 3:2 Aspect Ratio (default) over the 4:3? Isn't the 3:2 converted to 4:3 when exported to dv tape, etc? But what about for internet, would 4:3 Ratio Aspect in Anamorphic (for eventually 640x360 internet movies) be a good choice?
    But would that only be appropriate for Internet and if I had any hopes of other uses would 3:2 still be wisest?
    What got me thinking (if you can call it that) was that I placed an animation from Archive.org in a DV Ana 3:2 Sequence. To fill the screen, Scale had to be 113, Clip Aspect Ratio: 13. Then I changed the settings to 4:3 aspect ratio and the clip fit perfectly (Scale: 100, Clip Aspect Ratio: 0).
    So why not use a non-Anamorphic Seq Setting with a custom 16x9 Frame Size of 640x360?
    Maybe I'm thinking too much...or not thinking at all.
    How bout shining a little light in this dark closet!
