Display noise

Greetings,
I have Macbook pro 17" from early 2009. In last few weeks I hear strange low noise coming from left side of macbook (ports area). Noise is not loud but its annoying when work in quiet. I figure that display cause it because noise appears only in certain display brightness area (from half to full brightness). Here is the screen shot of that range: http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/2149/scren.gif
Does anyone have a similar problem or knows how to solve it?
Grateful

It's the inverter whine issue. It's covered by warranty.

  • Display noise after using VGA projector

I taught two terms at the university using my MB Air 2012 with a VGA projector. Each time I connected the Mac to the projector and took it off, there was random noise on the display. I considered it as normal. Now the lessons are over and I don't use the projector any more. However, every time I turn on the Mac and when I shut it down, I see the same noise on the display. Otherwise, there are no problems.
Is there a way to get rid of that noise?

  • Macbook Display - Noise, Interlacing/Dithering, and Offset

    Hello,
Starting yesterday, my 2011 Macbook Pro (specs below) has been having issues with its display / graphics card.
Frequently, especially while using resource-intensive programs like Chrome or Logic, my display will begin to introduce noise, then go black for a second, then come back on with the screen's image offset, wrapping around from left to right:
After a couple seconds my computer freezes (beach ball, but can still move mouse). Then my keyboard becomes unresponsive, leaving me no option but to shut down.
I double-checked the connection between the display and motherboard - seems fine. This is more likely a problem with the video card, I'd imagine, but I'm no expert. Thoughts?

  • 27" LED Cinema Display – noise and buzz

    Hello,
I recently purchased a second hand 27" Apple LED Cinema Display, and I now started to have some issues.
The first issue started today, it is some kind of buzz that comes out of the right speaker whenever I lower the brightness of the screen. I have about the opposite happening for other people – whenever the brightness would be above 3/4, a buzz sound would come up. For me it's when the brightness is below 1/4. The lower the brightness, so higher the pitch of the buzz. How weird is that?
The second issue is that, whenever a sound is played, some kind of white noise starts coming from I believe both speakers of the display. Even if I just adjust the volume on the keyboard (which makes a sound as well), this white noise would come up. It would last around 15-30 seconds, and then it would disappear. If headphones are connected to the Mac Pro, it doesn't happen (and it can't be heard in the headphones either). I once hooked up the Mac Pro to a Panasonic TV to test, and there was no buzz coming from the TV either.
Now I just noticed that the white noise is constantly here since the buzz appeared today (when I lower the brightness). Something is failing here I believe. It could also be the graphics card I guess?
Sometimes I get a very quick weird flash on the screen (black & white stripes I believe) for half a second, then they're gone. It's quite rare so it's hard to troubleshoot. Maybe it has to do with the Cinema Display as well. Or perhaps it is my graphics card (It's a Sapphire HD 7950 3 GB – the Cinema Display is connected with Mini DisplayPort). Or it might just be bad drivers for this card – they were never that good apparently.
Perhaps someone knows more than I do
    All helps is appreciated…
    Cheers!

    No ideas?

  • Thunderbolt display noise

I've recently noticed my display making noise when I have it on. It sounds similar to a truck idling, but is not very loud. After awhile the sound seems to disappear. (Either that or I just get used to it) I'm thinking it might be the fan. It has gotten colder where I live and I was wondering if that could account for the noise (metal contracting and expanding).
My display is connected to my macbook pro.

Some of the earlier displays had some fan noise and were fixed with the latest firmware update.  Be sure your display is up to date.  However, you could still have a noisey fan that may need repair or perhaps cleaning.

  • Macbook Pro won't work with external display?

The very first time I connected my brand new Macbook Pro to my 23" Cinema Display the laptop screen displayed mostly static, though the external monitor continued to work. The computer was sent to Apple for repair. Apple replaced the logic board. Though the nature of the problem changed following the "repair" (the Macbook's screen now goes dark instead of displaying noise) the laptop still will not drive the external monitor successfully without multiple re-starts. I've experimented with turning the sleep mode on and off as well as the screen saver. No effect. Is anyone using this set up successfully or is there some fatal design flaw in the Macbook Pro? System 1.4.8, 2 gigs RAM. Thanks.

Thanks for the input. Yes, I've driven the 23" with another Mac. I took the laptop back to the shop today. Hopefully they can resolve the issue.

  • Static noise coming from speakers, then sound stops

    Hi All,
Having a very strange problem with my Thunderbolt Display + MBP Late 2011.
While listening to music, static/cracking noise starts... get's worse and worse and eventually the sound stops :-(
Then I restart the application playing the music/sound, it works again...
    Anybody having these problems?
    Roberto

As an update - my Thunderbolt display noise problem appears to have resolved itself? Most nights I woud leave the display plugged into power, which could have been leading to some static or charge build up somewhere?
After disconnecting it o/n (no power) and then only powering it on when I was actively using it - the static noise disappeared.
I now leave it plugged in 24x7 and there have been no noise issues since.
NB: This is after a visit to the Genius Bar and having some parts replaced in the display. The static did return for a bit but it's now gone.

  • Macbook Pro Mid 2012 13" Dead?

Hi, my Macbook Pro 13" unexpectedly shut down yesterday during light use (was about to turn it off, had google chrome running but no windows open) and it now refuses to turn on or show any signs of functioning.
    - The battery indicator does not work
    - Resetting the PRAM and SMC did not work
    - Holding the power button for 10+ seconds did nothing
    - The computer did not run out of power, it was at 90% when it shut down. I believe it is still holding my last charge.
    - The magsafe displays a dull green punctuated by flashes of amber when plugged in.
    - Attempting to turn it on yields nothing- no fans, display, noise or any other signs of life.
I have taken very good care of my notebook. It was my frst mac and I got it in late November. It does not have any scratches, dents, or stains/smears, and has not suffered any drops or spills. Immediately before it shut down, I plugged in my bluetooth to charge via usb cable. Though I strongly believe it is not the cause, it is worth a mention. If the damage/problem is with the hardware, I'll put my warranty to good use. I'm planning to bring it in to my local Apple store but i thought it might be worth my while to consult the community first.
    Any useful info is appreciated!

I needed the data within the hdd, so i cruised over to ifixit for a teardown guide. Through what seems to be curiosity (I didn't have a hdd adaptor or another mac to plug it into), I unscrewed the back panel and unplugged and re-plugged the battery cable. Then I tried the battery indicator. The little green lights flashed in a row. The notebook was revived. The connection with the battery had some unknown issue, but its gone now.
    Thanks for your help!

  • IPhoto turned most of my edited photos into black files without any previous versions

I discovered the issue when I tried to edit some photos and the edit screen only displayed noise. After trying the steps recommended here and rebuilding my library most of my edited photos were black... I tried to return them to their previous versions but there aren't any.
When I create a new library and import a single photo and then try to edit it the iPhoto edit screen still either displays an image with noise or a black one.
I really like iPhoto and hope this issue can be fixed!
    I'm using iPhoto '11 version 9.4.3 on OS X 10.8.3

This is really a puzzlement.  The last test I can think of is it could be a preference file other than iPhoto's.  Here's how to test that premise:
    Trouble Shooting Preferences
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
    1 - close all applications.
2 - open your Home/Library folder and Option-drag (copy) the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
3 - select the contents of your Home/Library/Preferences folder and drag them into the Trash bin in the Dock.  You will be asked to provide your Admin password.
    4 - reboot.
5 - run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed
6 - If the problem is fixed:
    A - open the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.
B - Open the Preferences  folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace or Skip button.
    D - reboot.
7 - If the problem is NOT fixed, drag the contents of the Preference folder on the Desktop into the Home/Library/Preference folder and replace the entire contents that were created by clicking on Replace.
    8 - reboot.
Also do you have access to another Mac that you can test editing some of the photos you're having problems with here?
Here's another test:  reformat the card in the camera or use another card, take some photos, import and edit.  This could tell if there's a problem with the file itself due to a corrupted card format.

  • If I Can't Get a Radeon X800 XT...

...then what is my next best option for an AGP graphics card? According to a post at xlr8yourmac.com, it looks like ATI may have just bit the bullet and killed the X800 series completely. The graphics card is the weakest link (by far) in my system, and I need to figure out a way to improve performance. I have a first generation dual 2.0 ghz G5 tower with 4 GB of RAM and the stock Radeon 9600 Pro 64 MB.
The 9800 Pro would seem to be the next best card, but that's very difficult to find too, and the current 9600 Pro doesn't look like much of an upgrade except for additional VRAM. Is it even worth considering those? It looks like I'd need to shell out an additional $100 for an ADC-DVI adapter too, which I wouldn't need if I could find an X800 XT.
Am I pretty much screwed, or is there some option out there besides planning to buy a Mac Pro (which presents software compatibility issues for me anyway)?

    I have a dual 2GHz G5 (1st. Gen.) and an ATI X800 XT.
I would say that Aperture performance is comparable to the new 17" MacBook Pro HD that I tried in the Apple Store. If anything, the MacBook might have been faster because the demo RAW files they had were twice the size of the ones I work with at home.
Maybe this reference point will help you make a decision. X800 is a great card. Keep the heatsink/wind tunnel free of dust though or else you will see problems. I also had to reapply thermal grease because the old thermal grease was getting crusty. The screen displayed noise. These things solved the problem.

  • How can I automatically determine the threshold for a SmtSpectrumPeakSearch?

I'm using the 5600/5620 and LabWindows 8.0 to capture free-space RF in the range from 2.0 MHz to 500.0 MHz (not the entire range, but various selected 10 MHz segments).  Depending on the antenna and frequency I'm trying to detect the signal noise levels varies.  Currently I allow the operator to manually adjust the threshold level which is used for my SmtSpectrumPeakSearch call, but I'm using one threshold for all the frequency peaks I'm trying to measure.  I'd like to automatically compute a threshold 3 dB above the noise floor for each frequency I'm trying to detect.  What's the best way to accomplish that?
    Ken

    Hello Ken,
You have two scenarios to start from - either knowing ahead of time what the expected noise level is based on your settings, or not knowing. Also, whether the displayed noise level is the system noise level (i.e. the signal noise is lower than the system noise) or the signal noise level. Of course, is the noise level is the system noise level, you essentially know ahead of time what the noise level will be based on the 5660 specs.
If you are looking at system noise as the noise floor, you can look at the 5660 specs and calculate the noise floor based on the noise density value, 5660 RF attenuation, and RBW.
Noise Floor (dBm) = Noise Density (dBm/Hz) + 10*LOG10(Actual RBW) + RF Attenuation (dB)
If the noise level varies and your application has to adapt, then you can use the power spectrum. If you want to average a section of the spectrum (that contains no noise), you need to do so in linear units, not dB or dBm. A quicker way to do this would be to do a simple max value test for a portion of the spectrum noise that doesn't contain signal and then set your threshold 3 dB above this.

  • To Wait or Not before Buying MBP 17"?

I've been anxious to update my 1GHz PB to a 17" MBP. However, I've been very discouraged by all the news about excessive heat, display noise, and CPU noise. Even more discouraging is the apparent lack of support from Apple to fix, or even acknowledge, the problems.
So, my question is: Are these issues, which mostly seem to be basic manufacturing problems, going to be corrected or is this just the way it is and if you want a MBP, you just have to roll the dice and hope you get a winner?

    Hi Michael,
Well I was in the same boat as you. I had a 17" PowerBook G4 I purchased new for editing. I have since moved on to a desktop since, alas, my PowerBook was just not cutting the mustard anymore.
I am a big poweruser and have multiple apps running most of the time, I was also video conferencing more and more with my external iSight. Whenever I would video conference that was all I could do and my PowerBook just seemed to crawl during it and for a bit afterwards. So, I decided to take the plunge and last week upgrade to the 17" MacBook Pro. I am EXTREMELY glad I did. I have not had any issues with it whatsoever. I spoke to my Apple rep and knew what stuff to jetison off of my PowerBook prior to Migration. Ran through the majority of my apps and made sure any that had Universal versions were updated and then continued some plugin cleanup, etc. after the migration. I am very happy with mine. The screen is stunning, vibrant and I am enjoying the extra screen space. When running Universal apps, which much of what I normally use are Universal, the MBP is **** fast. I can now video conference and do several other things all at the same time.
Yes there are still those apps out there that have not been updated yet and yes do not run as great in Rosetta, like Photoshop. But again, for me, the majority of these were occassional use apps.
The unit does get hot, but I cannot honestly say it is a whole lot hotter than my PowerBook use to get. I also, normally, am using it in my office, on an iCurve and with an external keyboard and mouse.
For me, I am VERY happy I made the switch and am enjoying it immensely.
Like others have said, depending on your main use of the computer will really determine if you should get one now or wait. Obviously if you purchase AppleCare with it you need not worry about physical defects or hardware issues since they will be covered.
So, that is my 2 cents.

  • Do 20" iMacs have the same Video Humming as 24" models ?

I'm at the end of my tether, now on my 5th replacement of the 24" due to different problems:
    1. Loud Humming noise when video dimmed, and sometimes all of the time. x 4
    2. Broken SuperDrive x 2
    3. Scratches and black marks on the case x 2
    4. Vibrating Case x 2
Most of the 24" models I have had swapped out made the "Humming Noise" related to the brightness setting of the screen - to varying degrees.
I'm sat here close to Midnight, no other noises in the house except for Huuuuuuummmmmm
I've done a search on the forums, and can't find any mention of these sort of problems on 20", so thought I would ask as I am considering getting one of those instead.
On a similar vein, does anyone know of problems with the 24" Cinema Display (noise related) as this is my second option (Cinema Display + Mac Mini.)
    Thanks

    Hi Simon
I share your frustration! I think I responded to your previous post about the black marks you had on your iMac - I had similar on my first 24". I'm currently awaiting delivery of the 6th replacement machine - again, a variety of problems experienced - all of them having the display-dim-hum to varying degrees (one sounded like it was broadcasting a TV testcard signal like in the old days). I think when I posted last, I was awaiting number 5, which arrived... and wouldn't even start - DOA. (Could the saga get much worse, I asked myself!)...
Amsys collected the iMac, and when they tried to boot it, it worked. They called me to say they were sending it back to me. I told them I would not accept it because it must have an intermittent fault given that I tried for a day to make the thing switch on. He admitted that he had not even investigated any further to see if there indeed was a fault, and agreed that under the circumstances that a replacement should be ordered.
When I called Apple to report the DOA on the 10th, they told me they were ordering me a new one right away... I waited patiently, but as I didn't receive any confirmation by email, I called a week later and was told that, in fact, they hadn't ordered a replacement. I was put through to Senior Tech Support, who told me that because the iMac had booted for Amsys, that my only course of action was to go to Amsys and retrieve the iMac, since they were not prepared to do anything for me unless I had the iMac in front of me.
I was in total disbelief. I explained again that this was replacement number 5, and asked to speak to someone senior. He told me that he was the 'best person to speak to' and that he had 'the power to do anything'. His words.
He then said, look, hear me out and see what you think... He said the best thing to do was to go collect the iMac (and I don't have a clue where Amsys are based), then sit it on my desk, and wait for it to break again... and when it does, he guaranteed that he would replace it with a new machine, with all the possible upgrades it could take. "How does that sound?" he said.
    "Unacceptable," I replied.
I said you're asking me to go out of my way to retrieve a product I sent back to you because it didn't work... to then use it for business purposes knowing full well that it has a fault... and wait for it to break again - risk losing data, downtime, and income...
I tried to believe my ears, but couldn't. I managed to keep calm whilst I explained again that Amsys had told me that they would be ordering a replacement. He said he would ring to check.
He came back to me, and - lo and behold - admitted that indeed, a replacement had been ordered.
That was the 15th Jan... and after calling every day to chase this, I only managed to get a tracking number 2 days ago - turns out it took a week to build it (where previous replacements have been built in 24-36 hours on 'Priority')... I think if you get a DOA, you go to the bottom of the list - something I've experienced in the past.
Just as an aside, when I last called Apple to chase this, I was put through to India, and I asked to be given a number for UK/Ireland Customer Support... the representative was unwilling at first, then conceded, and gave me an 0845 number. I called it... and went straight through to Churchill Insurance!!!
I called Apple back... and this time went through to Greece. I hung up.
Third time... India again... and the representative was indeed able to help, and found me a tracking number (and that's when I learned that I'd been sent to the bottom of the queue).
So, iMac 24" number 6 will be delivered on Monday.
Lord knows how this will continue to unfold... and if it will ever be resolved! I think I've had my fill.
As for the 23" Cinema Displays - I had 3 of those before the pink colour cast was eliminated, and then there was yellow and blue banding, so I resorted to 20" displays - which have been excellent, and I have 2 hooked up to my trusty G5. I don't know whether the problems with the 23" have been resolved, so wouldn't like to advise on that one. However, back to the screen-dim-hum, the Cinema Displays run perfectly silently in my experience.
At present, with the iMac situation, I'm seriously thinking about going for a Mac Pro and getting a separate display; though I wouldn't try another 23", I'd probably save up some more and go for a 30" and brace myself for dancing pixels.
Let's see what Monday's delivery brings.
All the best, and keep us posted as to how things pan out.
