Display number of messages in mailboxes?

I know that Mail will display the number of unread messages next to the mailbox/folder name and that you can see how many messages are in a mailbox/folder by choosing that mailbox/folder and looking at the title bar...
...but how do you display the number of total meesages in each folder next to the folder name?
I'm a recent Mac convert and I'm running Tiger and always had this on my {os that won't be mentioned} e-mail clients.
Thanks
Jackson

The Dockstar folks were nice, but said they can't do this yet. Anybody else?

  • How do I show number of messages in mailboxes for Mail?

I can't figure out how to show the number of messages in my mailboxes. When I go to View > Message Attributes, Number is grayed out. Nothing in Customize Toolbar that would suggest #. Any advice? Thanks!

no, like in classic, there was a column "#" which showed how many messages you had in that particular email account. but all that info is in the email itself, but no total of emails for that mailbox. When I go to View > Message Attributes, "Number" is grayed out. thanks for your input.

  • Is anyone else having problems with voicemail displaying number of messages in box?

My phone displays missed calls but never that a voicemail was left. I have to dial in to hear messages. Anyone else having this issue? I am 4s with ATT.

Okay, Just off the phone with ATT. The visual voicemail server is down and has been down for a couple of days. In order for them to respond and escalate an issue a certain number of clients need to be affected. That happened at 950am yesterday morning. According to the gentlemen I spoke with, they have no idea when it will be repaired. He did offer a monetary compensation for the inconvenience.

  • Display number of unread and read messages in mailboxes?

    Hiya,
Can I get Mail to list the total messages in a mailbox in the column on the left? I have a smart-mailbox for "flagged" items and I'd like to be able to see how many things are in it, while I'm sorting things in my inbox.
There's an unanswered post here, "Display number of messages in mailboxes?" that's been archived. Is there an answer to this?
I suppose I could install Dockstar or Docktopus and try to customise Mail's dock icon. But I don't don't know if they can do "non-read" messages, and I keep the dock hidden normally. Can Mail do it easily for me, with your help?

  • Displaying total number of messages in Inbox

Using Mail in OS 10.3.9, the total number of messages in any selected mailbox was displayed just below the toolbar. This was very useful - when it got to around 800 I would know the time had come to archive some!
However, in Leopard (10.5.2) there doesn't seem to be any way to simply display just this total number.
Does anyone know of a way to display just the total?
    Thanks!

Of course it does! Gosh, I'm stupid!
Just goes to show that when you have looked at something for so long you take its location for granted!
    Thanks for helping!!

  • How do I display the number of messages in a message folder under version 3.1.2?

I want to display the number of messages (read and unread) next to the folder name as in my previous version.
I used to go to Tools...Options...Advanced...General Tab and check "Show expanded columns in the folder pane".

Read the Release Notes for Thunderbird, that issue is covered. Scroll down to "Known Issues", "All Systems", second paragraph: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/748278

  • Number of messages in Smart Mailbox

A question & some relavent thoughts:
In Mail, the number of Unread messages is shown the right of each mailbox.  But what are the total number messages?   Alternatively, how many Read messages are there?
I have many folders.  I am trying to create separate mailboxes for each important (to me) Sender.  Then it would be possible to find out how many messages were in 1 Smart Mailbox not contained in any other Smart Mail Box by
    1. having a Smart Mailbox containing all mail, and
    2. specifying conditions: From ...  Does not contain ...   Sender
    3. for each Sender
This would be very tedious if one receives mail from many senders.  However, if
    1. all senders belong to at least 1 Group,
this might be onerous but at least feasible.
If however, there were a Smart Mailbox condition:
    2. Group ...  Does not contain ...   Sender,
then this would feasible witnout being too onerous.
If anyone has any answers and/or suggestions,  I would be very happy to receive same!
    Chuck

I have had the same problem as well and could not find any way of fixing it! Also when I changed the name of the folder the message count disappeared for a while and then seemed to come back later... very bizarre.
Anyway, I may have found a solution after spending all afternoon searching the internet on macosxhints. [Link goes to the specific hint].
I would advise making a complete back-up of your ~/Library/Mail folder before trying this, though. When I did this it seemed to re-import some messages and mark them as unread for some unknown reason. However, I went through and marked them all as 'read', and I have the same number of messages in each mailbox as I did before I tried this, so I can only assume that things are the same as before.
One thing has changed, however! I no longer have a false number on the 'Flagged' messages smart mailbox! (Although if you have lots of messages marked as 'flagged' it may clear the flag - not sure).

  • Why "Bulk Mail" foder does not display number of unread messages unless I click the folder (Yahoo mail through IMAP)?

Yahoo mail account's "Spam" folder (as viewed through "Yahoo mail" web interface) is displayed in Thunderbird as "Bulk Mail" (IMAP). Looking at the account's foders in Thunderbird I see the number of unread messages in each folder. "Bulk Mail" appears always to be empty. If I click the "Bulk Mail" folder, then magically messages appear in message list, and the number of unread messages is displayed next to folder name, like in all other folders of this account.
Why I need to touch the "Bulk Mail" folder in order to see the number of messages in it?
Yahoo deletes messages from this folder at certain periods. I'm in danger of loosing messages unless I remember to touch all of my Yahoo account's Bulk Mail folders in Thunderbird.
How I can get "Bulk Mail" folder to show the number of unread messages like all other folders of the same account do?
    Thunderbird 24.6.0, Windows 7 Enterprise (Sp1)
    pekka

I don't use IMAP in Thunderbird, so I can't provide step-by-step instructions, however, other e-mail programs have settings for whether or not to synchronize each individual folder on a schedule or using push IMAP (vs when clicked). If Thunderbird has those settings, I would expect them to appear in the folder properties or account settings. Perhaps this will be helpful, but I don't know if you've already done some digging like this or not.
FYI, a quick search brought me to this page:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/configuration-options-folders
One item listed in that page is this:
Configure IMAP folders, connections and namespaces
    Menu location: Tools | Account Settings | <account name> | Server Settings | Advanced
Perhaps that would be a good place to start since it does mention IMAP folder connections, but folder properties still might be an easier place to peek first, just in case. For that, the site lists this:
Configure folder properties (IMAP folders only)
Menu location: Edit | Folder Properties | General Information
However, I think you could right-click on the "Bulk Mail" folder and hit properties in the pop-up menu.

  • Number of messages in the inbox is not displayed

I have noticed that every once in a while, the number of messages header for my Inbox (and other folders) goes missing. If I quit and re-open Mail, it comes back. Attached is a screen shot showing the problem.

I get the same with my N70. It only applies to the initial text, though. If you receive further texts from that contact, the contact name should be displayed. At least that's how it works for me.
It makes sense to me... if the number wasn't in the contacts list when it was received, it would come through as a number. If you then add the contact, it won't change that text message, but it will change future ones.

My mail is configured correctly.  When I go to view my inbox I get the 'Load More Messages...' with the number of messages showing.  I touch the display and nothing happens.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the email account and restarted the device.  I can send mail fine as well as view my sent messages.  Very confusing.

I have two yahoo accounts and I know as they 'improved' their servers I had periodic outages. It'd work fine on my webmail on  my computer, webmail on the iPad, but not via the mail app. And it was stuff on their end. It may be a case of wait and see and you may need to eventually remove/readd the account on your iPhone.
When the issue is on their end, unfortunately there's not much for users to do beyond wait it out or find work arounds.

Yosemite mail v8.0 not showing how many messages are in a mailbox. For example inbox. Before upgrading it used to show how many messages you had in your inbox. anyone know how to switch "on" the number of messages? Or has this feature been removed?

Agreed! This feature was very useful. If you find out how to turn it on, please let me know.
Apple, there is plenty of room in the window header all the way across on both sides of the word "Inbox". It's important to know many messages are in the Inbox. It provides a progress meter when you're cleaning out mail and striving for inbox zero.

  • ICloud Mail on my MacBook Pro incorrectly displays number of unread messages

The iCloud account in Mail displays 1 unread message when all are read.  I am unable to "mark all messages as read" to remove the 1 unread message icon.  When I send multiple test emails to the iCloud account, it still only displays 1 unread message when there are more.  The iCloud account on my iOS devices correctly displays the number of unread email messages.

This is an addition to my earlier statement...
This anomoly with Mail displaying 1 unread message regardless of the fact all messages are read is only occurring in Mail.  I set up iCloud email in Outlook for Mac 2011 and it correctly displays the number of unread messages.

  • TS3276 How do I set up Mail to show the number of messages in each of my mailboxes?

I just upgraded to Yosemite yesterday and am getting used to how things look. I'm almost positive that yesterday my Mail inbox showed the number of messages that were there, but now there is nothing. However, the number of flagged messages is shown. Any help with this? It's just a format thing, but I like to know how many emails I have in my inbox. Thanks!

Yes, I can see the number of messages, including unread, in the application title bar:
This is temporarily hidden in full screen view but re-appears if you hover the cursor over the top of the title bar.
The screenshot above is from an iCloud account, and I get the same with a gmail account, but I don't have an Exchange account I can test.

  • Display number of emails by sender

This is more of an intellectual curiosity question. I was wondering if it was possible to display a list of senders and the number of emails I have in my mailboxes. Maybe just the first 10 or 20 senders who have sent me the most messages, not EVERYONE! I am 99.9% sure this capability isn't in Mail natively, but does anyone have a clue about possibly using a Script or something similar?
I suppose I could rig up something in Terminal to do it, but the thought popped up in my head, and got me wondering.
    Thanks!

Wow, missed that there was a follow-up!
Unfortunately, your answer tells me that I didn't ask my question clearly enough. You did answer the question I asked, but NOT the one I meant!
Let me try again, perhaps with an example. What I REALLY want is something where Mail will automatically give me a collection BY SENDER sorted by number of messages from that sender. Sort of like where Mail groups by conversation thread. Of course, I can create a smart mailbox for a particular sender and see this. What I would like (and I am pretty sure doesn't exist, but would love at least a work around) is a mode where I can see, for example:
Sort by Sender (or Sort by From)
    Apple                   100/300
    Joe Smith              40/100
    Billy Bob                  20/50
    etc...
Where the 100/300 means 300 messages, 100 unread. And clicking on "Apple" will let me see all messages from Apple WITHOUT creating a smart mailbox. Again, I will be quit surprised if this exists. Perhaps I need to make my own work around using terminal and opening the mailbox (knowing better than to work with .mbox other than in read only mode!)
    Is this clearer?

  • Wrong number of messages in mail title bar

A minor issue: mail is displaying the wrong number of messages in the title bar of the mail window. (Says 45 when there's actually 16). Quitting & restarting the app fixes it, as does "rebuild", but "get mail" doesn't.
    Thanks!

I had the same issue after a power failure knocked my iMac down in full operation. For days I had this nagging 1 message unread on my dock icon. I have a massive list of neatly organized hierarchical mailboxes, with an equally massive list of rules to put incoming messages straight into the appropriate mailbox depending on sender, subject, etc...
Reading this thread gave me the idea to create a smart mailbox with the unread messages. Bam! It showed the one message which was unread, even though the containing mailbox folder didn't show it as unread. That solved the problem.
You might try deleting the smart mailbox with the unread messages, (eventually stopping Mail, restarting the computer), and re-creating the smart mailbox for unread messages.
