Display of Birth Year in Address Book

I keep most of my contacts in Gmail and I keep each contact's birthday, without the year. So instead of September 1, 1980 - I just have it display as September 1.
I recently imported all these contacts into Address Book using vCards - address book then placed the year 1970 for every contact.
I have tried to go in and remove the year, but it keeps auto populating 1970.
Does anyone know how to remove the year entirely from the birthday field in address book?

I'm thinking you have to make a new Text field for that incomplete Birthday, then use Address Book Importer...

Stubborn month of birth in Finnish Address Book

I (and other Finnish users) are having problems with the birthday field in Address Book. Whatever I try to enter - the month is always the current month (April at the moment). The day and year of birth are recorded properly. When I enter the date the month is displayed correctly (in text format) as long as I have the record open for editing, but when I close the record it changes to the current month. I have tried with various standard and custom date formats, entering the date in different formats to no avail.
Is there a workaround?
I first run into this problem in 10.3. and now I am running 10.4.6 without any progress. Is there a way to report localization bugs?

Thanks for the link. I don't think it's a space issue. When I look at my iCloud account through System Preferences it shows that I've got 24.99GB of 25GB available (it's just the Contacts and a personal Calendar).
The rules on limits, though, are really confusing. Total number of contacts 25,000 - I can understand that. Maximum size of a contact card 256KB - ok, I see how if you have War and Peace in the notes section that would be a problem. But what does it mean that maximum size of a contact group is 256KB? That's the same size limit as a single card so I assume they're referring to the size of the list of contact cards in the group. But how many contact cards equals 224KB?!? Based on experience, I'm guessing it equals about 3,800 contact names (which frankly doesn't seem like a lot to me - I've been collecting contacts since I got my first Palm Pilot in 1996, which comes to around 225 names a year, not a lot if you're in business).
Anyway, thanks for the help. If I run across a solution somewhere, I'll post it.

After syncing mac address book to ipad contacts, the ipad does not display all the fields that were in Mac address book (in my case all the email addresses). Anyone have a fix?

I have a problem similar to DeeRun's.. I would like the IM fields to be synced.. I use them to send e-mails to when the e-mail field is empty or when i just want to use that specific address.. Very annoying, would take hours if not days to transfer all those IM adresses to e-mail fields in addressbook..
EDIT: not to mention the mess it would make in my address book!

Display age in iCal using Address Book birthday

Is there a hidden feature in iCal (or Address Book), or a plug-in available, that will let me display a person's age in iCal alongside their birthday using the date from Address Book?

As well as automatically syncing birthday dates from Address Book, Dates to iCal 2 can sync anniversary and custom dates. It can set up to five alarms for each date in iCal and can also set different alarms for birthdays and anniversaries. It allows the option of only syncing from one Address Book group. This application also allows for the titles of the events sent to iCal to be modified to the user's preference.

Firefox not displaying current page URL in address book.

Firefox is now showing the URL data for the most recently opened tab in every address bar rather than the actual data for the page opened within that tab. For example, tab 1 is opened to wsj.com and tab two is the opened for foxnews.com, suddenly the address bar for tab 1 is now showing foxnews.com in the address bar AND it is now impossible to go 'back' because the back button is greyed out. Additionally, if a link is clicked from within the current tab, the URL in the address bar does not change but remains 'fixed' on the address opened in the most recently opened tab.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

In address book, display address or other columns

I cannot figure out how to display additional fields/columns in address book. I can adjust size of existing fields but adding new fields is a puzzler.

Wierd display font in Address book

I dont know what happened, I tried to restore address book from a time machine backup, now it displays funky, unreadable fonts in address book. I also noticed it happening in firefox only on gmail's page. I did not do anything with system fonts, and tried re-installing snow leopard. No clue what to do as its still messed up. Anyways i could get around doing an erase and re-install?

AFAICT, that's controlled by the /Applications/Address Book.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/ABGeneralPreferences.nib/designable.n ib file which shows that the default font is LucidaGrande, size 13. Make a copy of that nib, change the *+<double key="NSSize">1.300000e01</double>* to 1.000000e+01, and restart Address Book. Make sure you backup the original nib file. NOTE, that you do this with no guarantees that'll work.

Images in Address Book 4.0.4

I am updating my address book and I was wondering if there is way to increase the image size for my contacts. At the moment it just show a tiny image and I have to double click it to see a larger version.

The maximum image size for Address Book is 64X64 pixels or a multiple thereof, but if you have something larger (ie.128X128) it will still display 64 pixels square. A larger file size will sometimes compress to a smaller image, and I have found that 72 dpi at 64 square gives me the best resolution.
But like Allan said, no way to get that image any bigger. Actually, I would be interested in knowing how you are able to double click and get the image to display larger - is this in Address Book?

IR ADV-4025 Fax Address Book Error

Hello, my office has been experiencing a strange issue with the IR ADV-4025. When navigating the Print Preferences > Edit Address Book the following error is displayed:
"Could not operate the address book because an error occured."
We are using the latest ADV 4025 (FAX) drivers on all our Win7 x64 machines. Oddly, this problem seems to be spreading. Originally, it was only affecting 1 computer but now there are 4 having this issue.
Any suggestions?

Address Book is missing Notes probably due to syncing

I'm having trouble with notes that I have entered in the Note section of Address Book. Some of my Notes are disappearing entirely for seemingly random contacts. Out of about 2000 contacts the notes for about ten or twenty random contacts disappear forever. This has been happening to me for years using Address Book although I frequently update. I'm guessing that its related to problems synching my Address Book with my iPhone, MobileMe, and iPad. I backup using MobileMe and Time Machine. Any suggestions on how to prevent this persistent problem? Also, is there an easy way to restore just those missing notes from Time Machine without replacing my entire Address Book with an old copy that will almost certainly be inferior because it is not up to date. I can't take the time to go through all 2000 contacts to figure out which ones have missing notes.

Hopefully your computer included the correct install-restore discs and if the
OS was an upgraded version from the original, those discs are there, too.
You can use a demo mode of Pacifist (download from CharlesSoft) and
have it extricate the specific parts of the correct OS X Installer and then
it can install just the missing item(s) from the desktop. This is a bit tricky.
(Should be better than performing an Archive & Install to just get one part.
And the A&I process doesn't require wiping the hard drive, just upgrading.)
Sometimes the instructions with Pacifist appear to be counter-intuitive;
so if the utility does not work, be sure to recall details of what you did
and try the other possible path. Be sure to repair disk permissions on
the system once you are done; that shouldn't hurt but may help.
If you had a bootable full computer clone on an external hard disk drive,
you could probably just get the Address Book from there. However,
some of the main system parts need to be Installed correctly since a
few other parts get put into places where they aren't really seen.

Address Book always chooses 5th for birthdate to display

I use MobileMe to sync my iMac at home and my MBP at work, as well as my iPhone. All work fine, except recently the MBP. In the Address Book for it, when I type a birth date for a contact, regardless of what I type, the day portion of the field always becomes 05 (i.e. 5th) when I leave the field and/or finish editing the contact. The month and year info is correct and remains what I type it to be, but the day does not. If I click back in the field, it shows the day I typed but if I click out of it again, it goes back to the 5th. MobileMe, the iMac and iPhone all display the correct day in all cases but the MBP shows every contact with a birthday to be the 5th, although month and year are correct. Has this happened to anyone else and/or does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

hmm, just to completely eliminate syncing problem turn off syncing on that computer and reset the sync folder. make sure AB is not running at the time.

Some of the entries in my address book show birthdays one day/year earlier in Ical. I cannot change this except by putting in the birthdays a day/year earlier than they are. Why is this happening only for some entiries and not others?

Some of the birthdays I have entered in Address book appear in my Ical one day and one year earlier than the date I have given. Eg. I have entered a birthday in Address book as 23 March 2011 and it appears in Ical as being on 22 March 2010. Other names have no problems. There are only some that do not appear with the correct date and year. Why is this? Has anyone found how to correct this strange problem? I have Time Zones ticked.

I'm having this exact same problem, but it's doing it with a bunch of birthdays. I also did 0001 when I didn't know the birth year, so I went back and did a more current year, but they still aren't showing up where they should be...or at all. It's completely bizarre.

Currently my address book only displays e-mail addresses. It uses the portion of the address in front of the @ as the name. How can I sync it with my i-phone 4S that has name/numbers and addresses of my contacts?

When adding a new contact in address book, I want the default for display to be last, first. How can I make that the default?

I want names displayed in my address books in a formal manner:
Jones, Fred
Nixon, Jay
Smith, Gertrude
and I would prefer that display be created in that manner when I enter first and last names.

How do I get an imported an LDIF address book file to display properly?

x87, Win 7 64 bit pro. I backed up my address book by exporting an LDIF file to an external drive. My PC died and I bought a new one. I loaded Thunderbird 24.6.0 and imported the LDIF file. The addresses came in but they are not displayed in the address book properly. An address book folder named "TB Address Book 8-25-14" was created. When I select that folder the display to the right side of the window only shows a torso outline at the far left. The Name, Email, Chat Name, Organization, & work Phone fields are blank. If I select one of the entries and look at the properties, all of the data is there. If I move a contact to the Personal Address Book it still does not display correctly. However, there are two contact lists under the TB Address Boook 8-25-14 and if I select those sub-folders the data for each contact is displayed to the right. How do I get it to display properly so I can see what I'm doing? A friend of mine had a very similar problem importing into Thunderbird using Windows 8.

The problem fixed itself when I uninstalled ZumoDrive free cloud storage and also Growl the notifier application. Had to employ AppZapper to uninstall all related files.... but all worked a treat. All is back to normal.
