Display only on external monitor with laptop open--possible?

I have an external monitor (20" with resolution of 1680 x 1050) attached via DVI-D to my MacBook Pro 15". When I'm using it in this configuration, I like to only use my external monitor and not the built-in laptop display. The only way I can get this to work is to close the laptop screen and then wake up the computer using an externally attached (bluetooth, actually) keyboard.
My question is, how can I do this and have my laptop screen open? Whenever the laptop screen is open, its built-in screen activates and I can either "mirror" the displays or have display spanning. Mirroring does not work well for me because the external monitor's native LCD resolution is 1680 x 1050 and the laptop is 14xx by something (I forget the number).
Why do I want the screen to be open? Better airport and bluetooth reception. My external monitor is far away enough from the laptop that sometimes, the bluetooth mouse gets jittery when it tracks.
Thanks for the help!

How about turning the
brightness on the MBP all the way down? Will that
achieve what you want?
Kryten
Well, that means using monitor spanning. In that case, I could certainly make my external monitor the main display (thus, the one with the menu bar). The problem with monitor spanning in my situation is that it is possible windows and icons be mis-located to the laptop monitor. Because my two displays are not sitting side-by-side (they are at least 5 feet away from each other) this could get confusing.

    Previous Situation
With Snow Leopard I was able to keep the macbook screen open but turned off and use only the external monitor. This way I was able to use the front camera to make conference having everything only in the external monitor.
    Current Situation
With Lion as soon as I open the macbook monitor the image splits between the two monitors and I'm not able to set the extenal one as only one.

Support today quoted Apple's engineers as saying it is "expected behaviour" under Lion for the MBP's internal display to reactivate upon opening the lid, even if you want to use only your external display. A new version of the clamshell mode-related knowledgebase article (replacing HT3131) is due shortly confirming this.
    This is despite:
    - the obvious temperature-related benefits that were achievable (under Snow Leopard) by opening your MBP lid whilst continuing to output solely to, say, a 27" cinema display
    - potential wifi connectivity benefits of having the lid open
    - the waste of energy and inefficient use of graphics processing power in needlessly running two active screens (ie if running your MBP in clamshell mode would otherwise make it too hot and/or noisy or you need it open for wifi)
    - the negative longer-term impact on the battery and other components from running the MBP any hotter than it needs to be.
To have any hope of getting the previous behaviour back, we need to lobby Apple to change how Lion handles clamshell mode. Options available to them include changing Lion's expected behaviour or adding a user-selectable option within System Preferences.

  • Time Code displayed on an External Monitor? Is this possible?

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but is there a way to view your FC time code on your footage through your external monitor? I selected the show time code overlays from the viewer but it only shows up on the monitor on the computer screen and then goes a way when you play a clip. Is there something I’m missing that will allow me to watch the time code on playback, and on an external monitor? Thanks.

This will allow you to have TC display on one of your computer monitors. You cannot have it display on an external monitor...not on any NLE I know of. Not unless you are outputting to a deck and you have TC on the deck (the SUPER out on the back) routed to the monitor.

  • Using external monitor with laptop

At work I have an external monitor, keyboard and mouse so I want to close my laptop and leave it on a shelf while I work. Yesterday I plugged in my monitor before opening my laptop and it woke out of sleep (still closed) and let me work without having to open the machine. It also automatically fit my screen to the display size. Today I connected my laptop to the external monitor, but if I close it it goes to sleep (regardless of using the keyboard etc). The screen also shows a widescreen view of my desktop (it's not fit properly like yesterday). What do I have to do so that I can close my laptop, yet still be able to use it?

Today I connected my laptop to the external monitor, but if I close it it goes to sleep (regardless of using the keyboard etc).
That's normal. It will go to sleep, and you then wake it back up from the external keyboard/mouse. There are hacks such as Insomnia X which, I believe, will disable this sleep when the lid is closed, but you use any such hack at your own risk.

Have you checked the Displays preference for the external monitor to be sure it's set appropriately for the display's resolution?

  • Can I use iMac display as an external monitor with a pc?

I have a Windows laptop with VGA output. Can I connect this laptop's VGA output to mini display port of my 27" iMac?

This can't be done. VGA is an audio signal and there are no converters to turn it into a digital Display Port (DP) or Mini Display Port (MDP) signal. DVI and HDMI are digital signals (with HDMI having audio and a different physical connector) that can be converted into an MDP signal, but doing so requires an expensive converter or an even more expensive converter and scaler if you want to get full resolution on the target display. The cheaper but perhaps more complicated alternative is to replace your PC video card with a DP/MDP card after which you should be able to drive the 27" iMac display without any converter. Apple didn't include DVI/HDMI input capability in the 27" iMac because that would have required additional circuitry that would have raised the price substantially.

  • I have connected my new Macbook Air to my existing Samsung large external monitor with a VGA adaptor but I can't get the full mac desktop to display. No icons but then websites are coming up. Help!

I have connected my new Macbook Air to my existing Samsung large external monitor with a VGA adaptor but I can't get the full mac desktop to display. No icons but then websites are coming up. Help!  Further info:  I am a complete newbie to Mac.  Had three macs prior to 2000 then four PCs.  Just come back and struggling a bit with the unfamiliarity. On my old PC laptop I could simply switch from the laptop screen to the large external monitor (and back)  with the F4 function key.  While I can get the background image from my MBA to display, that's it.  Until I noticed on the far left of the external monitor, the very edge of one of the web pages I was on.  So Idragged it over to display in the centre.  But that's all that's there.  And now I have gone out of those web pages but they are still displaying on the monitor.  There is some wierd disconnect.  I'm sure it is just a setting thing.  Will keep searching for answer but any advice welcome!

Your dsplay is getting extended onto the external monitor. Chcnage the setting to duplicate it or only display on the external monitor and you should be fine,
Let me know if this worked for you.

  • HT5019 MacPro laptop display and 2 external monitors (three displays). Can I have more than one application displayed at a time?

I would like to have my MacPro laptop display and 2 external monitors (three displays). Question, how can I have more than one application displayed at a time? IE: I would like email on one monitor, Finder on my laptop, and iTunes on the other. Possible?
With extended desktop, it appears that I can only have one application presenting at a time. Sort of defeats the purpose of having multiple displays.
I am using the HDMI and the mini HDMI connectors.

  • How do I use two external monitors with my laptop?

I have a new Pavilion dm4-301 d cl Entertainment PC.   My OS is Windows 7.   I am used to using two external monitors with a docking station.   This new laptop does not have a docking station.  What do I need to get  to use two external monitors?

Certainly not without a dock but even with, HP laptop docks pretty well limit you to one of the external monitor ports, even if there are two on the dock. We have used a device called an Atlona AT-HDPIX2 which is a usb to hdmi adapter. It provides a third monitor capability for a laptop....use the native external monitor port and the internal laptop display and then this device gives a third monitor which is full configurable from the Windows 7 display interface...clone, extend, etc. It allows full HD resolution and is responsive enough for even light gaming.  HP makes no true docking station for your laptop.

  • How do I use my late 2011 iMac ( with thunderbolt) as external monitor for laptop/Xbox or other device with hdmi as output.

May be this question has been asked thousand times. how do I use my mid 2011 iMac ( with thunderbolt) as external monitor for laptop/Xbox or other device with hdmi as output. if apple hasn't removed that feature and has just moved that functinoality to thunderbolt then how can I use it. currently there is no laptop available with thunderbolt output. no 3rd party converter available. whats the use of having feature on latest functionality if we cant use it. I wish they would have made one port has mini-dvi and other thunderbolt for backward compatibility untill some vendor comes up with converter.

    It Says :
Mac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011) and iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) and later computers support Target Display Mode via Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable (2 m) when the source is another Thunderbolt-equipped computer.
Name one computer model/vendor which has thunderbolt as output for display + audio. this is so stupid to move to new technology without availbility of its compatible devices.

  • How do i get the slideshow to display on my external monitor in extended view with powerpoint?

i have my T500 (windows 7) connected to a large external monitor with extended view.  when i run powerpoint it displays the slideshow on my laptap screen instead of the external view.  how can i have the presenter view show on my laptop, and the slideshow show on the external monitor/projector?
    thanks!

You can do it that way, (Clone) but everything you do on your laptop will also be displayed on the monitor.
Assuming you would like the display on the external and freedom to navigate on your laptop without broadcasting, you would need to adjust your slide show settings in PowerPoint.
    To use this procedure:
In PowerPoint, On the Slide Show menu, click Set Up Show.
Under Multiple monitors > Display slide show on drop down menu:   select the monitor you want the slide show to appear on.

You are referring to a feature called Clamshell Mode, please read Clamshell Mode setup for instructions.
