Display problems Equium P200-1ED

My computer indicates that to show a screensaver I need a new video card or one that is compatible with Direct 3D. When I update my display to Mobile Intel (R) 965 Express Chipset Family on restart the screen splits in two and pixilates. I restart in safe mode and find that in the Device Manager it reports that the Display Adapter has two copies of Mobile Intel (R) 965 Express Chipset Family installed.
The only way I can get back to a stable screen is to uninstall this driver which is then reported as missing by Windows.
How can I install A display driver and video controller which gives me a stable display?

Windows update telld me to install Mobile Intel (R) 965 Express Chipset Family as a display driver, when I do this on restart my screen splits into 2 with what should be the left side on the right and vice versa. If i move the mouse the screen pixilates and it's impossible to work.
When I uninstall Mobile Intel (R) 965 Express Chipset Family the Device Manager shows no Display but it does show 'Other devices' called 'Unknown device' and ''Video controller'. If i allow Windows to update drivers for these devices it simply puts Mobile Intel (R) 965 Express Chipset Family back into the Display and I'm back with the same problem.

Equium P200-1ED Installing Windows XP Problem - SATA Drivers

I have just bought a Toshiba Equium P200-1ED laptop with Vista installed and want to install my copy of Windows XP Pro. This is the latest disc with SP2 included.
When I boot up it does not recognise the hard drive. I assume I need to download these drivers and load them onto a floppy and hit F6 when the windows setup screen prompts me to do so.
Questions are;
1) Where can I get these drivers from?
2) Will the machine recognise a USB floppy Drive?
3) Am I right about what I need to do?

How to install XP Home on the following Vista laptop. 05/01/08

Introduction
These are the steps taken by us to remove Vista from our Toshiba laptop and replace it with XP Home. There may be inconsistencies in our methods and we may not have all of the exact drivers installed, but everything appears to work OK for us.
Our laptop now runs much faster, opens and closes faster and is more stable.
This is not a 5 minute operation. It should not be attempted by anyone with only a passing knowledge of computers as it is very easy to screw things up. The shop you bought your PC from will charge a lot to fix things and they will probably insist on re-installing Vista!!.
Be prepared that this will also probably invalidate your warranty.
Luckily, I have a 2nd PC running XP that allows me to access the web. This is very useful as it means that while your Vista machine is 'broken' you can still search for help and download driver files. I also used my 2nd PC to create the modified XP installation CD mentioned further on.
You must have access to the web via some PC or other to get the required drivers.
Method
Firstly, while you still have Vista on your laptop machine, download and run an interrogation program such as 'Belarc advisor' which will list all the drivers and software that are installed on your laptop. Print it out for future reference.This may be useful later when searching on the web for any drivers that may need updating.
Now, make sure you have noted down all the required settings for your Internet connection.
Also, backup any files that you may have placed on the hard drive as you will lose the lot including any emails and address books and web favourites etc.
Unfortunately, the Toshiba disc that comes with this laptop does not appear to have any of the required drivers with it. Instead, I think that it relies on Vista keeping copies on your hard drive. This is not very bright as when the hard drive fails you have lost everything!
This therefore means that you have to go on the web and search for all the required drivers to run XP successfully.
Some we could not find, for example the Wireless network adapter, however this was no problem as once we had installed XP and connected to the web via the Ethernet cable to our Router we were able to run 'Update Driver' for each item missing.
Go to 'Device Manager' via 'Control Panel' then 'System' then 'Hardware'. Then look for any yellow question marks for any problems. Right click and run 'Update Driver' for the hardware update wizard and allow the PC to look on the web 'this time only'.
The ones we did this way were: Wireless adapter, Audio adapter.
Unfortunately an original XP SP2 CD does not contain the required drivers for this laptop. Therefore when you boot the CD it will, after a few minutes of installing files, say that you have a hardware problem as there are no drives present.
To rectify this, you will need to download the correct Intel ICH8M SATA AHCI Controller drivers. I couldn't find this on the Intel website, but instead searched on Google for it. and got it from: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2101

Creating the XP Drivers disc
Add the SATA drivers to a copy of your XP install CD using a program such as NLite.
You will need enough spare hard drive memory to take a copy of your XP install CD (approx 700MB).
Run the program 'sp37005.exe' and it will install to your hard drive. Don't install to a floppy.
Download 'NLite' from: http://www.nliteos.com/download.html
When you run NLite it will probably say that you need to install '.net Framework', if so, quit NLite and go and find the program. This is a Microsoft program that you can find by searching on Google for the relevant page on the Microsoft website.
Now place your XP install disc in your CD drive, if it autoruns, exit it.
Then run Nlite and follow on screen instructions.
The program will ask where your XP disc is then it will ask where you want to save the copy.
On the 'Task selection' screen select 'Drivers' and 'Bootable ISO'. then press 'Next'.
Now select 'Insert' then 'Multiple Driver folder' and go and find your downloaded SATA driver files. Now select 'All' and 'OK. The program will list the available SATA drivers. Only select the two that mention 'ICH8M'. Now press 'Next'. The screen will show the selected drivers. Press 'Next' again and then 'Yes' to the prompt, and then 'Next' when done
You are now presented with the 'Bootable ISO' screen.
Put a new burnable CD in your CD writer, wait for it to be recognised and exit any window that might pop up to allow you to install files
Now, in Nlite, under 'Mode' select 'Direct Burn'
Under 'Label' enter something like ' XP for Toshiba Equium A200' to identify the disc.
Leave Advanced settings alone and now add in the other required drivers by clicking explore and copying them to the root directory of the temporary XP directory on your hard disc. It might be best to create a 'Drivers' folder in the root directory to make them easy to find later.
Now click the 'Burn' button. Now follow the rest of the instructions to complete.
You have now created an XP install disc which contains your required SATA drivers.
-As you can tell, this is quite convuluted but avoids you having to buy a USB floppy drive and it provides a neat solution.
Hasta La Vista!!
Now you are ready to begin the cleansing process, if you are brave enough to continue....
Firstly, re-boot your laptop and while booting press F12 to change the boot order so that the DVD/CD ROM is first. Alternatively use F2 and then change the Boot order from there.
Now insert your new XP install disc in the DVD/CD drive and re-boot the PC, selecting boot from CD when prompted.
The XP CD will now start copying files and eventually will display an options screen
Select to install Windows.
Then delete the C: hard drive partition (with Vista on)
Delete the F drive partition used by Vista also.
You will have to follow lots of warning prompts to delete the partitions.
Now follow the instructions to create an NTFS partition on the C drive.
Now install XP as instructed.
Don't worry that the graphics are a bit chunky as once Windows has finished installing you can run the graphics driver you copied to the the XP CD to correct this.
Run the three driver files:
win2k_xp14311.exe Intel graphics driver
infinst_autol.exe Intel chipset software installation utility'
setup.exe Marvell Yukon Ethernet Driver
Your graphics should now improve and you should now be able to connect to the web (after running the web setup wizard). But don't do this until you have installed your Antivirus and Firewall software.
Now go to 'Device Manager' via 'Control Panel' then 'System' then 'Hardware'. Then look for any yellow question marks for any problems. Right click and run 'Update Driver' for the hardware update wizard and allow the PC to look on the web 'this time only'.
Hopefully, everything should now run OK.
Now go and have a drink to celebrate!

I have the same problem with my Lap Top, which is an Equium M40X-189. I have also been unable to find the driver, even using your helpful comments and link. The website is denying knowledge of any appropriate drivers for 'display' 'screen' 'graphic' 'video'. I'm also slightly struggling because my PC model also doesn't appear on the drop down list (presumably because it's too old).
Any other thoughts or suggestions on how to find the appropriate driver? Many thanks

USB ADSL Modem fails to install on Equium P200-1ED

I have a Toshiba Equium P200-1ED; Model Number# PSPB5E-003004KS.
I wish to use my Thomson SpeedTouch 330 - a USB bus powered USB ADSL modem - to my Toshiba Equium P200-1ED and have downloaded Release 4.1 of the Windows Vista driver from this web-page:

... however when the Vista modem driver is executed, the software fails to recognise the Thomson SpeedTouch 330 ADSL modem when the driver software prompts me to connect the modem.
The Thomson SpeedTouch 330 ADSL modem works perfectly when used with my old Toshiba/XP laptop (which was how I downloaded the Vista driver for the modem for the Equium).
What is wrong?

Problem Solved!
Un-installing all USB modem device drivers, disconnecting all USB devices and removing all USB host controllers and hubs from the Vista device manager and then rebooting the notebook MADE NO DIFFERENCE.
However when I received the new Thomson SpeedTouch 330 USB ADSL modem drivers on CD-ROM from the manufacturer the modem installed immediately.
I can only assume that there is a problem with the download of Release 4.1 of the Windows Vista driver for the SpeedTouch 330 from this web-page:

... as the drivers on the CD-ROM from Thomson work - but their web download of the driver for the SpeedTouch does not.
The problem was with the driver for Windows Vista - the laptop and modem now work correctly - as they should have done at the first installation attempt!

Gaming Issue on Equium P200-1ED

Hello,
I've been trying to use my Equium P200-1ED to play a few games and have encountered the same problem each time.
Basically, the game will load, no problem, however, it loads into a small portion of the screen (right in the middle) making a few games (like Command and Conquer) quite difficult to play. I want to be able to play in Full Screen, can anyone help?
I tried changing the resolution, but it didn't do much. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Equium P200-1ED: Windows randomly max & min and refusing to close

I have an Equium P200-1ED which I biought recently and Vista keeps doing strange things with open windows.
When trying to scroll a window, click a link or perform any action with a window then the window can randomly Maximize or minimize. Also when trying to close a window it will often just 'boing' at me for 3 or 4 times after clicking the 'X' and then close.
This doesn't happen on my other vista machine so i am assuming its an issue with this one.

I have managed to solve this problem.
It is caused by the synaptics touch pad software that causes it.
It is the tap zones that are much too large and interfere with operations you want to do. They seem to be set by default to change the size of the window.
So if you move the cursor upto the top right and you finger is at the top right of the pad when you tap it instead of hitting the close button it tries to do whatever is assigned to top right.
I've basically disabled the touch zones and it's behaving fine.

Is the Equium P200-1ED capable of powering USB devices connected to it?

(1) Possibly related to my previous question is anyone able to confirm whether the Toshiba Equium P200-1ED is able to power external devices connected to it via its USB ports?
(2) Can all 6 USB ports be used to simultaneously power 6 external USB devices?
What is wrong?

From my knowledge all USB ports supports the USB standard and provides 500mA.
But sometimes an USB device needs more as 500mA and then you will have to use an external power supply for the USB device.
Sometimes its advisable to use an USB hub which supports an own power supply.

As I said, possibly some 3rd external USB devices would need more as 500mA and in such case you should use an external power supply for the USB devices.

Equium P200-1ED - Question about possible 2nd HD and RAM

Hi,
I've got the Equium P200-1ED and in the manual (the page with the diagrams pointing out the features of the laptop) it mentions a second hard drive.
I know my P200 doesnt have a second drive fitted so does that mean there is space to possibly fit a second drive?
Also, is it true the max supported ram is 2GB?
It would be nice to upgrade the Ram from the standard 2GB.

Well, the second HDD depends on the single model.
The second HDD bay should be placed near to the first HDD bay.
You could remove the cover which secures the second HDD and could check if the necessary controller is available on your notebook.
Please note that the second HDD bay could be available but without the necessary HDD interface.
Regarding the memory upgrade;
If your notebook was equipped with the Intel 945PM/GM Express chipset or higher then you could update the memory up to 4GB. If the notebook was equipped with the Intel 943GML Express chipset then you can upgrade the memory up to 2GB.
But note; The Windows 32bit system will recognize only the 3GB due to the Microsoft Windows 32bit OS limitation.

Second HDD in an Equium P200-1ED

There seems to be the exact space for a second disk in this model but no connectors and the manual I finally managed to download for P200-1ED says it depends on the model!! I thought P200-1ED was the model.
Does it support a 2nd HDD or not? Seems such a waste of empty slot as there is more than enough room for a connector as well.
Anyone? Is it possible to put in a connector if I open it up?

As you already wrote, second HDD support depends on notebook model and hardware configuration (mainboard). I got Satellite P200 with two HDDs. If your notebook doesn't have connector for HDD it is, unfortunately, not supported.
As far as I know you cannot upgrade it and put in HDD connector.

Equium P200-1ED - Startup Driver for SD controller

I want to install Windows on as 64gb SD card.
I have tried using a USB adapter and through an express card adapter.
Is there startup driver to install at installation time for windows XP or windows 7
Or is there a BIOS update that can support it?

First of all it is a P200-1ED. Sorry.
Thanks for the response anyway. However:
1) As I said, I am not using the SD card port.
2) I am using the expresscard port with an adapter and the system sees it as a USB drive.
3) According to Windows Setup it needs a start-up controller/driver like SCSI controlled hard disks. With XP, you can install that before Windows is loaded.
4) It is even more straight forward with Windows 7 as everything is done through Windows and all the drives are accessible including SD through a USB &/or ExpressCard port. It asks for a driver.
5) Windows XP also asks for a controller
6) I have seen it on Sony & HP LapTops and apparently there are third party drivers that I thought might be used to do this.
7) Using SD cards as alternative to SSD is a well known practice, specially with LapTops
8) The system sees a USB drive at boot time, so I don't see why it shouldn't see the a SD drive seen as USB by the system. I don't think a BIOS is the only way although that would be preferable. I thought there must be a way of configuring the connection. This is what Windows i.e. a third part or Toshiba software to do that.
9) There are programs like Plop that can be used to run from the card but I still need to install the Windows files on it. I could install on a normal USB and then make ISO image of it and copy it to the SD card and then use a boot menu or the hard disk to load the OS from the SD card but I am not sure if that would work and it would be complicated to get the drives correct.
10) I don't understand why it doesn't see it as USB device which is what windows sees it as, not even when I use a USB adapter directly plugged into the USB port but it sees a normal USB Flash drive at boot time!!
I haven't done this sort of thing for years so I thought some one more into this sort of thing may know.

What error message is it exactly?
Make sure that the chipset driver and SP2 is installed at least.
I had a similar issue that I cant install the display driver. The error message was something like the hardware is not supported
But it was very easy to solve this problem. I installed the driver via device manager. I have selected the graphic card and choose update driver. Then I did choose the advanced installation to choose the directory by myself.
Anyway, after restart the driver was installed and it worked. :)

Equium P200-1ED - Fan making considerable noise

I have had laptop approx 17 months with no issues but last week noticed what I think was the fan making considerable noise - as if the bearings have gone or the fan has been damaged and is now clipping something? A bit like a car - I know the noise was not therebefore and this worries me.
This noise is intermittent, more often at start-up and far less frequent when laptop is in power saving mode (which makes me confident it is the fan??).
Is this a common fault? Should I be too concerned -i .e. can ignoring it lead to something more serious? And how do I resolve?
The fan appears completely unobstructed and the vents are clear as far as I can tell but I have not taken the laptop apart. If it is the bearings, one would suspect this is a known problem??

I think its not easy so say what the reason is for this but in my opinion something is blocking the fan.
In your case I would try to clean the notebook using compressed air spray. This could blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators. You can buy it from a local computer store and its easy to use because therefore you must not disassemble the notebook.
Its worth a try! ;)
I doubt that this is a common fault. In the forum I cant find may threads about this.

Equium P200-1ED shows on startup a PCI conflict

My Laptop shows on startup a PCI conflict and sometimes it will not startup, when starting windows it shows the progress bar but after that a blank screen

To be honest; for me it sounds like a problem on the motherboard.
The BIOS can be updated only using Win-based BIOS version if you are not able to boot the windows OS then you will not be able to update the BIOS in such case the ASP needs to be contacted
Maybe you should do this and should ask for BIOS updated before buying a new motherboard/notebook, etc

Equium P200-1ED - Need new ribbon cable

Hello, hopefully someone can help.
I have recently inherited this old laptop from my parents and hope to make it useable for my daughter, however there is a problem with the screen in that the picture has a strange red hue to it. I am guessing that the ribbon cable to the screen is somehow damaged.
I have searched for a new cable on ebay etc and although there are plenty of replacement parts for Toshiba laptops in general, I cannot find any specific for this model.
I'd rather try and sort this myself, I would imagine that the cost of taking the laptop to a specialist would be more than the laptop is worth, but it would be a shame to have to bin it for the sake of a bit of ribbon cable.

Before you replace or search for spare parts I would recommend connecting an external monitor. So you can check if the problem is related to LCD, LCD cable or mainboard itself.
If an external monitor works properly its the LCD or LCD cable itself Otherwise its graphic card/mainboard malfunction.
Generally speaking all Toshiba spare parts can be ordered from an authorized service provider:

So just contact nearest one and tell the technicians what you want. They will order it. ;)

Equium P200-1ED and processor upgrade

I have installed an 64GB SSD and installed Windows 7 with user and program data folders on an SD card installed as USB drive through the Expresscard slot. I have also put in 4GB of RAM
It is still slow browsing the web even through wired Ethernet. So I am considering upgrading the processors as the bottle neck appears to be definitely on the processor which is an Intel Dual T2310 @1.46 GHz.
So the question is what is the next possible processor upgrade?

On the question of processor upgrade:
I have already upgraded the BIOS and the Intel Chip set driver.
The problem is that this model is discontinued and I can't find much information on it.
I got this old Lap Top for free, I have got an 64GB SSD for 25, 64GB SD and express-card adaptor 30 and the 2X2GB RAM for 19.00. So if a new processor can make it fast enough then it will be worth another $20-$40 expense considering that I saw a used one advertised on Amazon for 245.00.
I know that it can support T3700 with L4 cache. Considering that a 2.GH can be bought for around $20.00. I though I might as well see if it can support something even faster how much that is.
How ever I get the the your point but I just don't know what is slowing this machine down.
When I change tab or reload a form it takes time before I can see the response to the keyboard input.
I have checked the page faults but I don't see anything there.
I wonder if I change to no paging, now that I have and SSD in there. So, any ideas would be welcome.
I doubt the network connection is a problem because I have fast broadband and I have tested it wired and wireless and as I said, I have a desktop running the same OS with 64BG SSD and 4GB RAM and it is a hell of a lot faster but that one has a quad Intel processor. The only other difference is that on the desktop the user folders are not moved to another drive but that is because I don't have and SD slot on the other one and surely SD is a lot faster than HHD.
So, what else could be holding it back? Feed backs would be appreciated.
