Display remains dark after wakeup

The last few times I have awakened my four-year-old iBook G4 12" from sleep, the screen has flashed on briefly (just a flash), then gone dark again--not full black but nearly. The On light on the edge of the case remains lit, and I assume that the CPU and hard drive are working. No amount of key pushing will get the screen to come on, and the only way I can get it back is to turn the machine off with the button, wait a minute or so, and then use the button to turn it back on. At that point everything works OK, except that Word is disposed to crash. I have reset the power management system so that I can leave my work for a few minutes without having to worry about Sleep, and taken to turning the machine off when I quit for the day. I am concerned, however, that the problem may signal something even nastier lying in wait. The hard drive is relatively new--15 months. Any advice?

So how was it that you were putting the iBook to sleep? Via the Apple command or closing the lid?
--not full black but nearly.
So it's really dim but you can still see the desktop?
The On light on the edge of the case remains lit, and I assume that the CPU and hard drive are working.
Do you have the mini VGA adapter and another monitor to hook up?

If you attached an external monitor that would also verify if that was the case.
I have reset the power management system
Like this?

Have you done a "deep reset?" Pulling all power and letting it sit for 10 minutes after PMU reset.
I've also seen the super cap that holds settings on the PMU blow up and leak out.
Not exactly sure what the symptoms of that problem would be but I've replaced them with units from Electronics Goldmine. They're .22 F at 5.5 Volts. I had to mod them to make it work.

  • Pismoscreen remains dark after start  - please help

My pismo screen remains dark after starting the computer, I just controlled the electrical connections as previous described in the forum but with no results.
Starting by cd has no effects - the screen remains dark, but the computer is visible as volume in the network .
As my powerbook has the same default after an expensive repair by apple 1 year ago (they did´nt even tell me what was going wrong) , I would like to know what could be the reason of the malfunction and if there is a possibility to fix the problem by myself.
    regards
    zacambo

    Cacker,
I would certainly give the microprocessor card a shot as described in an earlier reply.
When the 'book is running, can you move the display from almost closed to fully opened (almost 180º) and cause the backlight to light up? If so, you have a loose connection or damaged wires where they pass through the hinges/clutches.
You will want to lift off the keyboard and heat shield and check the inverter/backlight connections on the logic board.
Since you can see data, one inexpensive repair is replacing the inverter board ($10-15); this powers the fluorescent backlight and is very easy to replace. See this link for the inverter and cables.

Note: You do NOT have to remove all the items as shown in this guide. To replace the inverter, remove all power > keyboard (don't disconnect - just lay it on the palm rest upside down) > heat shield > clutch cover.

  • Mac Pro display remains black after start up.

My 2008 Mac Pro display remains black after start up.  It is plugged in properly and the light comes on, but the screen stays black.  It first started doing this about a week ago, but after a manual restart or two, it would start up properly with the display working.  Today the display has remained black every time I've tried to start up.  Any suggestions for troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Safe Mode uses a very simple way of talking to the screen -- it does not even load the screen driver, and it uses a very common low resolution.
If it does not work that way, it simply does not work. You need a replacement graphics card.

my ipod nano 7th generation....works fine as long as it's on the docking station. when off the station, the display goes dark after a few seconds. it's fully charged. please help. this is the heartbeat of my business. thanks

In the worst case, it's still under warranty (all 7th gen nanos are still under one year from purchase).
So, you disconnect it from power, and it almost immediately goes dead?  You can try a Restore... but it doesn't sound like the type of problem a Restore will fix.
You should probably have it looked by Apple Tech Support.  If there's an Apple Store nearby, you can take it to the store's Genius Bar.  To avoid waiting, you can make a reservation at the store's web page

  • Display quite dark after some seconds and stays da...

The display gets quite dark after some time (10 seconds?),
eg. during internet surfing or email checking, even if the light sensor is in MAX position. Also removing the hand or the fingers away from the screen (light sensor coverage) the display stays too dark....until I close this app (with the function key), the display gets bright again, unfortunately the app (eg. internet) then is closed :-(

But there I can't make any changes. If I do so, it changes the profile to "own settings" automatically. But I wannne keep the "normal" and "higher perfomance" settings.
And by the way; I can't change the time, the display shades. Only if it does or not. "Lower monitor brightness automatically befor go to standby", and if I would disable it, I would change the profile as written above - and that's not what I want.
    MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.8)
I just want to increase the time the display gets darker.

  • LED display went dark after iSight picture taken...

    Hi there,
Strangest thing just happened. I took a photo from the iSight camera on my MBP and immediately after the flash, the LED screen went dark. I could still (barely) see what was on the screen, at least enough to shut it down, and then when I started it back up, it was fine. Has anyone else heard of this happening?
    Thanks!

Yeah, that happened to me tonight too (MBP, about a month old). I rebooted, did again, and no issues. Quirk of somekind I guess.

  • Computer won't start and light just flashes as if in sleep mode. Does not even make the start chime. displays remain dark.

Computer won't start. sounds like it makes an attempt at accessing a hard drive. but then just goes to sleep. no start up noise. no displays come on.

Resetting SMC could solve the problem.

  • My mac book pro 17 inch , 2008 year , display went dark, and the steps in "everthing Mac" book did not work, any ideas?

my mac book pro 17 inch , 2008 year , display went dark after rebooting from origianl disc, and the steps in "everthing Mac" book did not work, any ideas?

The router might be bad or incompatible, but let's be optimistic.
On System Preferences, go to Network/Advanced/PPP. Only two items should be checked: Connect Automatically When Needed and Disconnect when switching user accounts. Uncheck everything else. Now, click Okay on the end of the page. The next time you're online, you shouldn't be disconnected.
If you still get disconnected like before, we might be dealing with a router issue - which can get rather complicated.

  • The iPad Display gets dark in the sun

When using my iPad (1) outdoor the Display gets darker after a while. Is this usual behaviour of an LCD Panel?

  • Display dark after bootcamp?

After I installed the Apple support drivers the screen display was dark, I downloaded the latest nvydia drivers and the screen display is what you would expect, trouble is when I reboot the display goes dark again.
Its almost like the updates are reversed?
Also the track pad is a little sensitive any way to make a little less sensitive (it a bit quick up and down)
    Any ideas gents?

Did you order your MB with the 4GB of RAM or did you put it in yourself? I've read of RAM problems causing your MB to not wake from sleep. If you added the RAM yourself, try putting the original RAM back in and see if you get the same result. -GDF

  • Open apps not showing where they were positioned, after wakeup running 3 displays

I currently have an ATI 5870 and a GT120 driving 3 displays, two 24" with 1920x1080 and one 26" with 1920x1200. Every single display is attached to the Mac via DVI. The 5870 drives the 26" and one 24", the GT120 drives the other 24".
Under Lion, I get a pretty 3 display view and the whole system is working fine except for this:
When working with 3 displays, I usually have mail on the left, working in safari, iWork and other apps in the middle and iTunes on the right. When I return after a pause to my Mac, everything is asleep. I touch the keyboard to wake everything up. Now the following is happening:
As one of the 24" display is a few miliseconds faster awake then the others, it signals readyness to the Mac. At this moment I assume the Mac believes that there is only one display attached and arranges all open apps on that one display.
A few instants later, the other display also signal readyness to the Mac. But at this time, the open apps are already mixed up on that first display and when all 3 displays are running up, the view ends up with 2 displays showing desktop and one display showing all open apps. So the first thing would be to rearrange all open apps in the way I had it before.
I thought, the reason is because I use 2 different typs of displays and I made a test with only two 24" attached to the 5870. This works fine because everytime the Mac wakes up all open apps are shown where they showed up when the Mac went to sleep mode.
An other test I did was the following:
Two Original Apple Mini Display Port to dual Link DVI adapter attached to the 5870 serving the two 24" and the 26" attached to the 5870. In this configuration, I do not need the GT120. This test ended negativ, because after wakeup there was the same problem showing open apps on only 1 display.
It is hard to find similar configurations having mentioned this problem. Of course, one easy solution would be to detach the third display but this is not really an option since working is great with 3 displays especially for editing video stuff. Is there somewhere a special flag to set which says `no moving windows after wakeup` or something like that? Is anyone using 3 displays not having this problem after wakeup?
    Any thougts?
    Thanks
    Yanick

    Hi there,
Reboot the computer and quickly hold
down the Command and S keys.
You'll get some Unix text on your
    screen.
After that, type in: /sbin/fsck -fy
and press Return. That will check
    and repair your HD.
After that you may type something
    like: reboot
Post back if it does/doesn't help.

  • MMacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) switches on but internal display remains off/black .There is no start-up sound and the fan starts off normal but after about Five minutes begins to run even faster

    Hi ,
My MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) switches on but internal display remains off/black .There is no start-up sound and the fan starts off normal but after about Five minutes begins to run even faster as if the machine is running a heavy load.It displayed a question mark some time back then a friend borrwed it ,he flashed the system and put windows 7.Then a few days pasted and now it wont display as stated.I have tried to Reset SMC and the Command + P + R + Power but still no response. Please assist?
    Regrads Josh

I think your "friend" caused a problem (or two).
I do not know what "flashed the system" means......
Based on what was done, I would probably erase the HD and restore the system from a backup before the software changes were made.

  • IPhone screen remains dark

My iPhone 4 will not display the home screen or anything else.
The screen will appear to be black with a hint of grey when you press the on/off button.
The iPhone will not power down by holding down the on/off button nor simultaneously holding down the on/off and home button.
The snooze alarm is constantly going off every 15 minutes. I'm only able to press the on/off button to snooze it for the time being.
I tried charging the phone and plugging it into my Mac Book however the screen remains dark.
    What can I do?

have you tried restoring your phone in iTunes. You can just plug it into the computer make sure you have a back up. After you back up hit restore and see if that helps. If you don't make a back up you will lose all your data because the restore will erase every thing
