  • Display resolution and Mac OS X 10.5.7

I am now using my Mac mini (early 2009) as my primary computer (new aluminum keyboard and an LG 23" LCD HDTV) and have sent the iMac Core Duo to "the boys" room for them to use. But they have called my attention to the display resolution a few times since I updated it to 10.5.7. The iMac seems to be lost as to what its default resolution should be. It was always set 1024x768, but that appears really tiny onscreen.
I also have noticed a large number of folks in the Mac mini (early 2009) forums complaing that after the update, they have lost the native resolutions they previously used with the mini and HDTVs when setup as a media center.
Has anyone here noticed resolution issues following updating to 10.5.7? Have you found a way to correct the issue?

    Hi David
No problems here with the 10.5.7 update, the resolution on my 17" is and always has been set to 1440x900 Millions both before and after the update. +(1440x900 is the native res. for a 17" display)+
If I switch the iMac Display to 1024x768 Millions it makes everything larger and slightly blurred, again the same before and after the update.
Also note that the settings for my connect 27" Sharp flat screen TV are 1024x768 60Hz (NTSC) Millions was not affected in anyway. I always run my setup in Extended Desktop, but if I switch to Mirroring then both the iMac and TV Displays go to 1024x768.
Sound to me like it has something to do with selecting the Mirroring/(Extended Desktop)Mirroring Off feature...?

  • Display Resolution and iPhoto (MBA, Mavericks, iPhoto 9.5.1, etc.)

I get an error message saying the resolution is not optimal for iPhoto when I select the bottom option (1024 x 640), but the other two options are so small as to be a strain on the eyes.  The bottom control bar is not accessible at that resolution, unless I hit the full screen arrows at the top right.
The "Best for Display" resolution setting is even worse than scaling.  Fairly puzzled what to do.
    Thanks,
    Steve

Thanks for the response, but it seems unlikely, since my last computer, a 2006 Powerbook G4, had great iPhoto resolution when the display was set at 1024 x 768.
    Any other ideas?

  • Display resolutions and aspect ratio's

    Two questions:
    1. Is there a way to get the aspect ratio of the screen?
    2. Is there a way from within Java to take over the entire screen and set the screen resolution without using DirectX?

    hi!
for your first problem you can reffer to Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getScreenSize() after that you can easily calculate the ratio..

  • My MacBook Pro can't find the display brand and resolution

    Hello everybody,
    I have a MacBook Pro "Core i7" 2.7 13" Early 2011.
I use and external display Philips 220C1SW
Recently my mac won't recognize the Philips brand anymore and use instead a generic display resolution, which is wrong.
Does anybody had the same issue?
    Looking forward your answers

    Hello le-mat
Check out the article below for resolving issues when connecting to an external display. I would start with resetting the NVRAM and SMC as they will resolve most display resolution and power issues.

  • Kdemod display resolution default issue

Hello everyone again. Im currently on my third install of arch and im trying out kdemod this time... one issue i seem to be having tho is that my resolution keeps going to 1600x1200 and i keep having to change it to 1280x1024 at the beggening of my session... how do i fix this? btw i have fglrx drivers. Just to me it seems like there might be a permission problem or something that wont let it write the config, but i dunno where to start to look.

try this. navigate to KMenu -> Control Center -> Peripherals -> Display and mark the box next to message "Apply settings at next startup". Then change your display resolution, and it should work for subsequent logon.

  • G5 Freezes, display settings and videocard : A clue ?

    Hello,
Before you begin to read this ( rather ) long post (sorry for that), i will summarize the final question :
Can there be a relationship between freezes and monitor settings in system preferences ? Are there solutions to improve these settings ? what can be done ?
    *My experience* :
After last Tiger updates (9 and 10), my Finder (?) froze very often.
In April, for this reason, I made a Tiger "archive and install" installation.
    Nothing really improved.
In July, after multiple freezes I uninstalled :
    -ATI monitor utility,
-Optical Logitech mouse *LCC driver* (and come back to the cord original Apple mouse), and the
-APE folder "*Application Enhancer*" installed in System files, which I could not imagine to be there, since I had uninstalled "APE" from preference panes under Panther and +never reinstalled it+ after that. But EasyFind showed it to me and Pacifist indicated me that in the LCC driver package there was a "call" to APE installation (and in the last ATI monitor crash report I had seen this ape mentioned).
-dsl modem wifi card and come back to an ethernet connexion, and also
-reinstalled a *mac OS X 10.4.10 combo* update,
in spite of all these un-/installations, freezes were going on with a peak at 10 one day, leaving me convinced that something important in the G5 was totally dead.
One morning, on start, the screen was totally black and the monitor power green led was even off. (I checked warranty for the monitor : 3 years on site until ... November 2007, at least that could be saved.)
Before calling the shop where I had bought this *SyncMaster 213T* display, I wanted to be sure that nothing else was wrong. So, I did some test indicated on the Samsung paper manual (fortunately, there are still some...) i.e. : unplug the monitor from the computer and test it by itself ... I could see exactly the boxes that were indicated as "normal". So the monitor seemed to be "clean".
After I had uninstalled all other devices such as : USB 2 hub, Sony active speakers, and, on a friend's (knowing much more things than me on Macs) advice, made ( done ? sorry ! ) some vigourous PRAM reset I could restart with a "normal" screen.
The first thing I did, then, was to open the virtual monitor manual, in the trouble shooting session. Namely concerning compatibility between video cards and this monitor. There was something about frequencies unsupported by certain cards. I understood that the higher, the better. But to get the higher, I had to choose a lower Display resolution. In its native resolution (1600 x 1200), the Monitor pref pane proposed only 60 Hz; to get 75 Hz (the maximum frequency indicated in the pref pane) I had to downgrade the resolution from 1600 x 1200 to 1280 x 1024. So did I. After a last freeze, I restarted with PRAM reset. The screen was ok.
And several weeks after, in August, I realized that, since that time, I had encountered NO freeze at all. At that time, I was sure that the "vigorous" PRAM reset had made the wonder.
One day of August, I wanted to change my desktop image with a photo I had just taken. The photo size was wider than the display resolution and I could not see it entirely on the screen. So to get a total view of it, I changed the resolution size to the initial one (1600 x 1200 - freq. 60 Hz). And my photo was entire. Then, I wanted to read something in my newsreader ( Thoth , which I daily use). As a post window was too small to see the entire post and wishing to avoid scrolling, I dragged, as usual, the left lower side to resize this window and I saw the black border line figuring the new window ... but nothing else happened. The window did not resize and suddenly I realized that I was again in a freeze story. :-/
The Apple mouse cursor was moving freely but nothing else happened. And no click was efficient in the display view (but I could hear - as before - its reactive noise inside the G5).
I decided to wait a bit and dit it for about 20 minutes. Nothing went better and I had to shutdown and restart again, tried a "*fsck -s*" but there also, after a beginning of the process, monitor froze. Then, I decided to restart (with alt ) on a "safe" 2nd internal boot disk with a "clean installed" Tiger, which I keep for this kind of problems and from there repaired authorizations and checked the other disk (which appeared to be ok).
Then I restarted normally on my "working" session. Opened iTunes, but as soon as I wanted to click on Mail in the dock : re-freeze.
This time, when I restarted after shutdown (since the "force to quit" was unavailable), the first thing I did was to re-change the Monitor resolution and frequency (to 1280 x 1024 and 75 Hz). And from this time, mid-august, I had only one freeze, which occurred when I wanted to look at a genuine Apple screensaver (but for this, there are about two years that I had to abandon to look at them or at iTunes animations, that I miss ... snif) I just wanted to check if- now -with this display settings change, things were better, but no.
My display is a digital Samsung SyncMaster 213T (21") plugged on the DVI ATI card port.
Many thanks to those who have had the patience to read this and my apologize to those who have the feeling they have lost their time (and also for my approximative English).
    *Thank you !*
PS : Since yesterday my SuperDrive, a Pioneer 106 D, (replaced one year ago by Applecare), seems to be definitely dead : a DVD appears like a text generic document in DiskUtility and does even not appear on the desktop although the DVD player opens, but on a "visualisation" window only (the name of the DVD, a video commercial one, which I could look at last week, did not appear in the window header but did in DiskUtility). And just before, another DVD made an horrible noise in the superdrive but nothing mounts on the desk, DVD player opened but I quickly removed the DVD because of the persistent noise (so I didn't open DiscUtility to see what happened). (Problems with this superdrive date from long).
Can there be a link between this last problem and others above ?

Hello! There are a couple of things you can do. One would be to run the Apple Hardware test to see if it comes back with anything. It's probably on one of the install discs if it's not on a separate disk. Second you can open the console (apps>utilities>console) and see if it's throwing a crash log that might help. The monitor and video card resolution could very well be causing the problem which would seem to indicate since a PRAM reset would clear the resolution settings. I think you'll have to find the resolution that works and stick with it. Tom
    Hello!
For the AHT unfortunately impossible now with a dead Superdrive ... I had done it quite recently (one month) and all appeared to be ok. I'm thinking of buying an external one but don't know if it could help for this i.e: if an install DVD will run on an external drive.
for the console: I don't well understand your "throwing" a crash log ... Is it "deleting" that you mean? Then which one?
Just after writing this post, I read an interesting article by a developer about Tiger and resolution (an hidden feature) which I thought could be in relationship with my problem (I'm not a developer myself but to help localizing somme apps I had to install the DTools). Also saw in a forum a similar problem concerning a "younger" type of G5 monoproc 1.8, and an ATI RADEON card (younger too) and this resolution 1600 x 1200. It seems that several people (all gamers) with this configuration was meeting the same trouble. Sky punishment ??
Well I think I will stick to pram reset then.
Thank you very much for you answer (and your patience !)

  • ThinkPad S230 Twist Display resolution

    Hello lenovo,
I recently recognized the ThinkPad S230 Twist what could be an adequate replacement for my X300.
But there is one think that's annoying me - why does the display just have a 1366 x 768px resolution where many other 12,5" devices have a full HD resolution?
Will there be a fullHD display available in the future. The frame also looks very thick - perhaps 13" may fit as well - then I would be perfect for my needs.
    LJ

As I see, there is a X1 Carbon with touch - great display resolution and excellent design, but a touch screen on a normal laptop, is that what the people want? I mean, why should a trackpoint-user need a touchscreen, when the device cannot be used as a tablet? Contrary to many states I think convertible devices have potential. Of cause they may not be as handy as a tablet (what is mostly criticized) but it is still much more comfortable to read long reports or just browse some web pages in tablet mode (portrait orientation) than in laptop mode. Tablets are lightweight but often not usable for productive work; Laptops are heavier but more productive. Convertibles imho are the best compromise of both.

  • Looking for suggestions for a new display: What size, resolution and refresh is recommended?

I've been using my laptop display, 15.6" and its just too small. I figured I'd purchase a display to plug into the laptop. I'd like suggestion on specs. I figured a 20 to 23 inch would work ok but I've seen some folks with dual screens. Lastly, I have no understanding of resoution, refresh rates to look for or brands to either look at or stay away from.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks.

The good news is that you don't need to worry too much about the specs -- just about any monitor you purchase will be OK.  First choose a size that fits in you work area, then pick the monitor from that range of products that has the highest resolution and refresh rates -- the monitors will all have very similar specs.
    I've been using PCConnection
    http://www.pcconnection.com/
as my primary source for computer purchases for over 12 years and highly recommend it.  They have user's comments for most of their products, so you can get a feel for the satisfaction level of the products.
I've never understood the value of having dual monitors, unless one needs to have a couple of real-time monitoring apps open at the same time for instant feedback about the data....

I just bought a new PC and I have re-installed my Adobe Creative Suite Standard on it.
Software open fine. PROBLEM: The toolbars (menu stuff) appear extra-small, too small for me to read...
I went into the PC settings and tried to change the display resolution. This changes the size of all  the icons (not only Adobe) but it does not solve the problem when I open an Adobe application (Photoshop or Illustrator)... The PC is run under Windows 8.1 and my display resolution is 3200x1800 (but again, when I change the settings for a smaller resolution, only the size of the icons is affected. Once I open the software, the problem is still there, extra-small toolbars...). Help!!!

  • Display resolution is different left and right sides

Hi, my HP G42 laptop now has a different display resolution on the left and right sides. The left half seems to have less resolution than the right side, the right side looks like it's in HD, the left side looks washed out. I'm not sure if it is a hardware issue or a setting/software issue. The first time it appeared was after a windows 7 update was completed and installed, I'm not sure if that was just a coincidence. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It works but is very annoying to look at.
    Thank you,
    Ray

    Hi Ray_M,
Welcome to the HP Forums! I see that you are having a problem with two different resolutions on each half of your screen. The easiest way to determine where the problem lies is to connect it to an external monitor. If the image is normal then we know it is an issue with the display screen but if the issue occurs on the external monitor then we know it is a problem with the drivers or the video card itself.
What is the product number for your g42? There are a number of different models in that series.

  • Macbook display unexpectedly changes resolution and cannot be changed

The internal display resolution recently changed unexpectedly such that I now have 1 inch black bars on both sides of my display and the right, left and bottom edges of all images and applications are not viewable. I have gone to system preferences to change the resolution, but the dialog box for changing the resolution pops up far to the right and off of the viewable screen to the point that I am unable to select a different resolution. I have not installed any new hardware or software recently and did not change the resolution, this problem occurred spontaneously. I can see the edge of the display resolution settings box, but I am unable to drag the box to the viewable screen or select any of the other resolution options. Help!

Try starting in Safe mode and see if the screen boots into a normal resolution when starting safe. If it does, change the resolution to something not native that still is useable. Then restart normally and see if the problem is gone. If so, set the resolution back to what it should be (1280 x 800).

  • Framebuffer and display resolution

    hi,
I have an onboard graphiccard with an Intel 945GME chipset. My display allows a resolution of 1024x600 pixel. But how do I find out which is the correct value for 1024x600 to setup the correct vga value in my /boot/grub/menu.lst to activate the framebuffer and show those nice archlinux-logos while booting? It seems it always just gets a 800x600 resolution and a bad color-depth.

Hmmm, well you could look into the hwinfo docs and see whether there's some compile-time option you need to supply to make --framebuffer work. (It could be that the functionality is now gone, but maybe it isn't.)
If that doesn't lead anywhere, you could try this (annoying amount of work but you'd only need to do it once): install a minimal Arch on a fresh partition or USB key, don't update the kernel to 2.6.27, and compile/run the hwinfo that's on AUR.

  • Logic, UI, and display resolution

One of the reasons I was eyeing the iMac was because it came with such a great display built into the price. I find the 15.4'' screen on my Macbook Pro to be rather limiting, and since OSX is resolution dependent, I cant really get around it.
I ended up deciding to skip the iMac for an 8 core Mac Pro which will last longer (even though the iMac currently outperforms it in logic lololol).
Turns out that it is pretty much impossible to find a screen with resolution above 1920x1080 unless it costs around $1000, which I cant afford to spend on a display.
I'm wondering if any of you have come up with solutions. Is there a way to adjust the UI in Logic so that having a bigger screen (regardless of resolution) would still be helpful, or is it that I may as well go with 21.5'' displays?

Ah, so you got it at Fry's eh? Are you by chance located in a western state with water on one side, Nevada on the other, and a few other states piled on top?
Also, are you using any kind of FW or PCIe-based video card with that?
    Yes, CA.
I am using the video card that came with the Power Mac tower. It's a dual output one. Even though it is only 1920 x 1080 resolution, darn those are some BIG pixels, and it looks very good. My eyesight is not what it used to be... so every bit helps.
