Display resolution changes when I close Notebook

Hello,
I have a very annoying problem since I reinstalled the complete system of my Z60m (including all updates within the thinkpad system update utility).
I configured 'Close Notebook Behaviour' in the energy manager to do NOTHING (neither hibernate nor standby) if I close my notebook cover. When I close it the display driver seems to interprete the closing as a removal of the display device and when I re-open the cover the ati display card starts with a resolution of 600x400, detects the native resolution of the panel (1600x1024) and changes it immediately. The problem is, that all open programs including the desktop are going through this resolution change too and everything gets completely cluttered.
I already tried to remove all drivers and reinstall without Catalyst center (I installed only the drivers), but it didn't help to fix the problem. I also tried to inactivate PowerPlay and automatic device detection. This didn't help neither.
The point is, that before I re-installed my system everything was fine when I re-opened the cover of my notebook, with the same configuration within the energy manager.
My system details:
Thinkpad Z60m (2531-E9G)
Windows XP (SP3)
ATI Radeon X600
ATI Driver incl. Catalyst Control Center (Driver-package version: 8.383.1.1.3-070621a2-051036C)
Any hint or advice regarding this issue is appreciated!
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards
Henry Farkas

Hi R - J - C
Are you using external monitor or have an apple video adapter plugged in into your mini dvi port, if that so, try to unplug that first.
Also once you set it back to its native resolution, try not to go back there by check the "Show displays in menu bar" and you can change the resolution from there.
May I ask why you need to go to system preference > display that often?
Try to repair permission and reset PRAM to refresh it.
Good Luck.

  • Why does my external monitor name and resolution change when I close the lid?

When I close my lid on my early 2001 MBP, the external monitor reverts to a lower resolution.  I am not even able to select the proper resolution.
I am using VGA (I need VGA for my KVM).   When the lid is open, the monitor sees the correct monitor, and I can set the correct resolution.   When the lid closes, it only shows a genertic VGA monitor and defaults to a lower resolution.  I am not able to change the resolution up when I have the lid closed as well.   Does anyone have any insight into this?

  • External display resolution changes after returning from display sleep

I often use an external display as a second screen with my Macbook Pro (OS X 10.8.2)  However, when I return to the computer after the display has gone to sleep, the external display resolution changes when the display reappears.  Then I have to go into System Preferences > Display and "Detect Displays" in order to return the external display to the proper resolution.
Does anybody know of a way for me to avoid having to do this every time my display sleeps?
    Thank you,

I have the exact same problem.
I found the key combination ⌘ alt F2 also restores the proper resolution on both displays, however it's still a bit annoying

  • Display resolution changes during sleep

This does not look quite like anything I've seen here already. Mid-2010 Mac Mini, OS X 10.9.2, Acer V173 monitor with 1280 x 1024 maximum resolution, connected via Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter (because the monitor has only a VGA input). Resolution is set at 1280 x 1024. I have Display Menu installed and the icon sits at the top in the menu bar.
Display goes to sleep when there is no user activity for a few minutes (because although the display doesn't use much power it's still against my nature to waste any). I wake it up by hitting a non-printing key such as control, option, command, or all three together. Often as not, the display wakes up in a lower resolution. I can usually restore it to 1280 x 1024 by using Display Menu, but then I also have to resize some of the windows that have been shrunk by the lower resolution.
I don't want the display resolution to change. I tried resetting NVRAM and repairing file permissions, no help.
Why does the display resolution change without my knowledge and consent? More to the point, how can I keep it from doing that?

Another helpful hint, again I forget where on this discussion board I saw it, is that holding down the Option key while hitting the Scaled button in Display Preferences gives a wider choice of resolutions. Ordinarily the only resolution option is 1280x1024, but the Option key brings up others, including 1280x960.
On the theory that Apple doesn't like the 5:4 aspect ratio of the native 1280x1024 resolution of the monitor, I set the monitor resolution to 1280x960 yesterday (June 23). There's a little distortion from using a 4:3 aspect ratio on a physically 5:4 monitor, but if two weeks go by (July 7) without the resolution going bad, I will try a new (or used) monitor.
The next question is, would Apple dislike a wide screen aspect ratio? If it likes 16:9, would it dislike 16:10? With my hardware and OS, and a 1080p HDTV/monitor connected with an HDMI cable, would the resolution stay put?

    Hello anitagold:
Welcome to HP's forum. Thank you for visiting us how ever you are on the wrong forum. You own a business Touchsmart witch has a total different operating system then home user's does. This section is for home user Touchsmarts. This is where you need to post http://h30499.www3.hp.com/ You will receive a much accurate respounce I also think they have live chat assistance as well during business hours on line as well. Your software is also different then ours is so it would not do you any good for me to give you direction on how to adjust your screen resolution. Because your computer even though they look a like on the outside they are not alike inside. Thank you frrw.

  • Display resolution changed at reboot. cant go back.

My monitor (samsung 932nw) works wonders on 1440 x 900 resolution.
it has worked wonders with my mac mini for months but this morning when i started the machine the resolution had changed. when i went into the displays screen that resolution does not show up anymore, and if i set it to detect displays i just get a blank grey screen.
i even tried to switch manually with switch res x but it doesnt look right at all.
how did this happen and what can i do?
    thanks!

It sounds like possibly the preferences file for displays has become corrupt. In /Library/Preferences there should be a file labeled com.apple.windowserver.plist. Throw it in the trash. Also, for however many user accounts are on the mini, there should be files in /Users/name/Library/Preferences/ByHost that are named com.apple.windowserver.xxxxxxx.plist where xxxxxx is a hexidecimal string of letters and numbers and where name is the name on the account. Throw all of those files in the trash as well, then restart the mini.
When OS X restarts and finds those files missing from their expected location, it will generate fresh copies with factory default values. That should give the mini a fresh start with the Samsung monitor.
Note that throwing away the .plist files described above will also cause the loss of any custom color calibrations you may have done, or any other display specific preferences that may have been stored. Hopefully that doesn't matter to you. You can just redo them anyway. Good luck.

Any idea what the problem might be?

I had the same problem early on in Mountain Lion - whenever an application kicked in that used the discrete GPU, the screen would get a bluish tint. I 'resolved' the situation by using Cody Krieger's gfxCardStatus and kept the mode on Integrated Only. This, of course, slowed down some applications but, by and large, I was able to live with it. Then one day - just out of the 'blue' - I decided to switch back to Dynamic Switching: and, lo and behold, by blue tint was gone when the discrete GPU kicked in.
I only know how to temporarily fix the problem - you're one of about a dozen people that have reported it both here and in the Adobe Photoshop users forum. Try the gfxCardStatus 'fix' and then see if the problem doesn't rectify itself after a bit. It wasn't the 10.8.1 update that fixed my problem - it was just a week or so of running on integrated only.
Let me know if this doesn't work for you...

  • Resolution Change When I am Using "Edit a copy with lightroom adjustment"

    Hi Guys,
I am using the latest version of lightroom and I have been trying to fix the error that lightroom made.
    1. I open most of my photos (resolution 300dpi) on lightroom to do some adjustment
    2. I am using "Edit with photoshop CS3" to continuemy editing
    okay this the problem!
I just realized that every time, I open the photos on photoshop the resolution change became 240.
I am really not sure which part of lightroom that I need to change :( because I just want to keep the original resolution when I bring it to photoshop.
    Thanks

Bear in mind that there is no meaningful resolution number in an image file coming from a camera. The only truly "correct" resolution would be the number of pixels per inch on the sensor array, but that would be several thousand ppi, and your image size in inches or cm would appear to be very small -- i.e., the size of the sensor. Any other number put in there by the camera, by ACR, or by LR is merely a placeholder. Both LR and ACR set this to 240 ppi by default, which gives a typical camera image dimensions bearing some reasonable relationship to a potential print size.

  • Display color changes when Photoshop opens

    Hi there,
Since recently, whenever I open Photoshop CS6 (13.0.1) or Illustrator CS6 (16.1.0), the display color changes, i.e. as if the display color profile termporarily changes to a different one. Even if I switch to another app, the color change will remain until I quite Photoshop or Illustrator. Using Mac OS 10.8.2.
Does anyone anyone have an idea how to prevent this from happening?
    Thanks!

The color shift happens when the computer changes the graphics card (from Intel HD to Nvidia or AMD). It's a problem of Mac OS X 10.8.x. I found a simple solution that worked (at least for me):
Turn off automatic graphics switching in System Preferences > Energy Saver
    Reboot your computer
Turn automatic graphics switching on again (or leave it off, as you like ...)
It seems that the mac has to start up with the discreet graphics card turned on (Nvidia or AMD).

  • Firefox stops loading new pages, displays "Loading". When I close it it goes. But when I restart it gives me "Another version is running, but not responding. This requires a power cycle reboot.

Version 3.6.18. Running on Windows XP Pro. (kept current)
This happens on a variety of pages. I get the little Loading thing in the tab, with the circle moving. So I X out (to exit Firefox). When I go to restart I get the error message "Another version of FireFox is running, but not responding". I give Windows the "three finger salute", and go to Task Manager, and do not see any reference to Firefox, and the Performance, and Processes seem OK. But it never seems to close the earlier Firefox, and won't let me open a new one. Any suggestions? Super Thanks for your help!

    Hi Andis.
First of all, this is completely normal behavior, although it's a bit irritating, I know. What happens is that when you close Firefox, despite the window disappearing right there and then, Firefox keeps running for a little bit until the whole closing procedure is completed. This can take a fraction of a second on fast computers, or can take a few seconds on slow computers or when Firefox is storing a large session (if you save your tabs). All you have to do is wait a bit until Firefox closes, and then open it again.
To see if it's still running, you can press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC and then, under the Processes tab, you can see if firefox.exe is still there. If it's taking an unusual amount of time to close (which happens very rarely, and only if the browser freezes on exit), you can force the application to terminate from this application (task manager).
Firefox 4.0 will reduce by 97% the time it takes firefox.exe to close, so this problem will be basically erased for Firefox's next version.
Until then, I can recommend you this extension, which helps you restart your browser more easily and without bothering about closing times:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3559/
    Hopefully this will help.

  • Why does my currently active tab group change when I close tabs?

I think it's a bug, but I can't figure out where to post a bug report. I use tab groups (Firefox 5.0), and love them. But often, when I close a tab in one group, I get automatically switched to another tab group. More rarely, Firefox rearranges which tabs are in which groups when this happens. This usually seems to happen when I'm on a pinned "App Tab" (Gmail), and then choose to close one of the tabs via clicking its X with the mouse. I currently have 6 tab groups, all but one of which are named.

Bizarre that we've still got this bug and we are already up to FF7, anyone at mozilla care about quality?

  • Lost display resolution options when installing 10.4.6 with 20" monitor

I recently installed an upgrade using black retail DVD 10.4.6 from 10.2.8, and now i only have one option for display resolution (256 colors). The screen is gray??? I can restart using 9.2 Classic and the screen display is just fine (thousands & millions of colors). I did the disk utility and permission fix prior to and before installation. I also updated the firmware. I tried to download 10.4.8 combo update, but the license agreement can't be 'agreed to' because the button will not appear on the low resolution screen. Do i have to initialize the whole disk? The Monitor is a 20" Display (the large blue monster). Since it was working with 10.2.8 and still works under 9.2 Classic reboot, i doubt whether its a hardware problem.. Any ideas?

I wonder if it could be the Voodoo5 Dfx video card that's bn not compatible with 10.4.8?? It workds with 10.2.

  • Resolution change when waking from Sleep

I will at times hook up my MBP to a plasma display to show photos. Now-sometimes when waking from sleep (and not attached to an external monitor), it reverts back to 800x600. I have to go to SP to displays and re-detect the MacBook display. Unpredictable and frustrating.

Lets get a few details straightened out first:
    1. What cable are you using to connect? DVI, VGA, HDMI, component, composite, s-video, etc.?
    2. What resolution is it when you connect? If your plasma is an HDTV, it is capable of taking much higher than 800x600, so depending on the cable you use, you can adjust that to make it higher or even the same native resolution.
    3. When you disconnect, is the computer running, or closed/sleeping? If you close, then disconnect, it might think the display is still connected. Or, rather, after switching resolutions back, later on when you open it up it suddly changes to a lower res?
In the meantime, in system prefs, in "Displays" check the box that says "Show displays in menu bar" and then you will get a menu up top to choose your displays and resolution sizes. That will at least make it easier to change.
