Display ripples when scrolling ANY types of pages

This is driving me nuts. And giving me headaches. And making my head spin.
My MBPro 2.4Ghz with infamous Nvidia 8600M GT 256MB graphics card is the culprit. A real letdown compared to all the Macs in general, and the portables in particular, that I've used over the last 20 years.
As others have reported here, there is a MAJOR issue with "rippling" lines of text when scrolling web pages. But I am getting the same thing when scrolling ALL types of pages: web, text, spreadsheets, etc.
It happens both on the MBPro screen and on an external monitor.
It happens when scrolling with the trackpad or with a USB mouse.
It happens at all times.
And, if this is possible, it seems to be getting worse. It's almost at the point where I have to TAKE MY EYES OFF THE SCREEN if I have to do any scrolling. If not, by the end of the work day, my head is spinning, my eyes are dead tired, I'm going cross-eyed and, more times than not, I've got a headache from all the "visual effects".
I took my MBPro to an Authorized Apple Technician, to see if it had the defective Nvidia graphics card. I'd done a reformat and fresh install of 10.5.7 the night before.
The Nvidia test software, on an external HD, showed that I don't have a defective card.
Not a bid deal in the end, as they would have just installed the SAME type of graphics card and logic board.
I convinced the Apple Tech to use my MBPro for a few minutes, just to show him what I meant. He said he was surprised to see the ripples, that he'd never really focused on that in the past. But they were definitely there, and he wasn't able to say that it was "normal", as he really wanted to do.
He said he thought it might be a problem with the NVIDIA DRIVERS.
He then went onto his 24" iMac with Nvidia graphics card and, lo and behold, he had THE SAME RIPPLING while scrolling longer web and text pages.
This made him more convinced that it must be "imperfect" Nvidia drivers in Mac OS 10.5. And he said the only thing to do was hope that Apple and Nvidia get these drivers perfected and thoroughly tested in the near future, either by specific update or IN SNOW LEOPARD.
What's frustrating is that I have NEVER had this problem with either our iMac 20" Core Duo, which has an ATI graphics card, or our Macbook Core 2 Duo with GMA 950 Intel chipset. That is, with much older, less powerful Intel Macs, but ones that DON'T HAVE NVIDIA graphics cards.

I call it more of a flicker, but I also experience this issue with a MBP (led backlight). It is not browser dependant, but as Safari scrolls smoothly, it is much more apparent with this than other browsers.
Here is a perfect example, watch the sidebars on this page while scrolling :
http://www.theautochannel.com
It's also particularly bad with this site (apple discussion board), and others with high contrast text, the text flickers/ripples very badly This never happened with my Powerbook display. Is this an issue or simply inherent with these displays. Personally, it is giving me headaches when scrolling through large amounts of text (which I often do for work), and rendering this laptop virtually unusable for me.
I'm surprised to find very few others complaining about this phenomenon, perhaps I'm not describing the issue well with my search terms. Has anyone heard of a solution?
Thanks

  • Display problem when scrolling in Finder OS X Lion.

    Hi,
Last week i bought a new iMac, i7, AMD Radeon 6970M.
Sometimes, when scrolling in the Finder, the text is displayed weird.
See screendump. Is anyone known with this issue?

I've had the exact same problem with Lion.  Telephone support told me to reinstall OS X Lion, which didn't help. The genius at the Genius bar told me it was my 3rd party (Kingston) RAM.  He demonstated the display was fine without the extra RAM, but he was using a USB mouse with a scrollwheel.  At home, my bluetooh magic mouse continued to cause the same problem, and so did my trackpad.  So I determined it had to do with the faster (and different type of) scrolling that these newer devices perform.  I then saw that if I use the slider on the right side of the finder window instead of gesturing with the mouse or trackpad it works fine.
So I played with my settings a bit to see if I could overcome this problem, and found a solution.  I went to "Preferences-General-Show scroll bars" and changed from "Automatically based on input device" to "Always".  This nearly fixes the problem!  At least so far.  I get an occasional glitch if I scroll up and down a lot, but way less frequently than when its set to the default "Automatically based on input device".  This must be due to the new disappearing scrollbar "feature" in Lion.  Nicely done, Apple!

  • Firefox 5: distortion when scrolling on all web pages; wavey appearance

There is distortion when scrolling on all webpages using Firefox 5. It doesn't matter how fast or slow the scrolling is, the screen becomes wavey until the scrolling stops. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox and that hasn't helped. This does not happen using Safari or in any documents or spreadsheets opened outside the Firefox browser.

'''''Its better to take a Screenshot of your Toolbars before performing the following suggestion.'''''
Start Firefox in Safe Mode by Holding down the SHIFT key while Starting Firefox -> Safe Mode window will appear -> place Checkmark on 2nd option "Reset Toolbars and Controls" -> Click "Make Changes and Restart".
Check and tell if its working.

  • Screen too sensitive when scrolling--any solution?

My iPhone 3G screen is extremely sensitive when scrolling. The slightest touch will activate a website or open a unintended application. Is there anyway to decrease the sensitivity or another method of scrolling that will solve my problem?
    Thanks,
    Don

You're not alone. Scrolling through forums is definitely a learned art, and at times makes one wish for cursor keys... especially if you want to get to the far bottom of a long page.
    1) Note how the UI decides if you're scrolling or clicking. If you click on a link or button, but then move up or down a little, the button un-highlights and is no longer active.
So one trick is to make sure that you always move up/down a bit before you let up.
    2) Double-click a main column so it fills the screen, and you have more white space to use for scrolling.

    Hi All,
    Thanks for all your help.
Seems I already found out the issue.
Since we are using "Personal Home Page" for the system profile option "Self Service Personal Home Page Mode" I checked oracle note and found out
that 11i did not support this mode. Maybe this is the problem that is why we are getting page cannot be displayed error when only 1 responsibility is active.
The way to fix this, is to use mode 'Framework Only' instead of 'Personal Home Page' as Oracle are phasing out mod_plsql based UI and it will not be present in future releases. No maintenance is being performed (i.e. bug fixes) to the mod_plsql based UI technology.
Please check this note for more clearer explanation:
Is The 'Personal Home Page' Mode Supported In Oracle 11i Applications? [ID 368628.1]
Again, thank you for your help!

  • After ver 26 was installed my screen display distorts when scrolling - I tried resetting - no luck - any suggestions?

when I use either the scroll down bar on the right side or arrows up/down the display on the screen distorts at an angle as it moves up or down. does not reset with time

I think I saw a screen shot of this in a different thread, but I can't find it at the moment.
When there are strange display artifacts, I suspect a graphics driver incompatibility.
As a workaround, you could disable hardware acceleration of graphics in Firefox and in Flash (if relevant):
    (A) In Firefox, un-check the box here and restart:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > General > "Use hardware acceleration when available"
    (B) In Flash, see this support article from Adobe: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues
    Any improvement?

    Hi,
Try leaving it as Positioned and in the Layout palette set the Page to Auto-Fit. If that does not work for your layout you will need to go Flowed. For example if you have fields below the repeating subform you will need a Flowed layout in order to push these objects down. See a description here: http://assure.ly/eSGQMt and an example here: http://assure.ly/e2jR0C.
In the example you will see how I grouped objects that don't expand into Positioned subforms. You should do this before you change the page layout to Flowed.
You will defenitiely need to set the Page to allow page breaks in content and any subform down to the repeating sufborm.
    Good luck,
    Niall

  • Uneven ripple when scrolling

I just got a new MacBook Pro 15" and love the new display. However, I noticed that when I scroll down (using two fingers on the pad) the scrolling is not smooth, a sort of uneven ripple. A new MacBook doesn't have this effect. Has anyone noticed this/come across this? Or is it just me?

    It is a bug:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86823
It's REALLY annoying and there's nothing you can do about it and it's not due to CPU utilization.
I've found that Mail.app and Colloquy can cause this problem but I don't keep those apps open all the time - the BIGGEST offender is Safari. And seriously, not having Safari open after a reboot is retarding. I need to be able to have Safari open all day, every day, with 10 tabs. That's why I bought a macbook pro and not a Toshiba Satellite.
This is a bug. Apple needs to fix it. The answer is in the hand's of Apple's developers.

  • Display distoring when scrolling + flickering in video.

At random times my display starts distorting (seems that there isn't a full screen refresh taking place when it should) when I scroll in Safari, Firefox, Cyberduck etc. Video also distorts at these times.
    See a picture here: http://www.rutgermuller.nl/temp/macbook_display.jpg
Apple support told me this is a software issue that will be fixed, BUT WHEN!? I've been waiting for about 2 months now. It's very annoying to have to restart the MacBook at random times.

Have upgrade now, thanks. I'll keep you posted.

  • TS3230 When scrolling down a web page, Safari resets to the top of the page and will not stay where I stopped the scroll..

When two finger scrolling in Safari, it resets itself to the top of the web page - not where I stopped.

From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the errant extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. Its settings will revert to their defaults. If the extension still causes a problem, remove it permanently or refer to its developer for support.

  • InDesign crashes when scrolling/editing a corrupted page with a broken link.

Just sharing a problem I had and how I solved it (with help from adobe tech support-thanks!).
Indesign CC running on a Mac OSX 10.9.2
    PROBLEM:
InDesign crashed when ever I reached a certain page in a large document I was working on. On that page was a link to an illustrator file. Somehow this file must have been corrupted, but there was no chance to edit or delete this link/page as the program crashed instantly when ever I tried to manipulated that specific page.
    SOLUTION:
I opened a new, empty document; opened the broken file and moved all pages to the new document: LAYOUT/PAGES/MOVE PAGES; select Move Pages "ALL"; Move to: "Select the new document"; click OK. I went back to the new file with the moved pages saved it and deleted the corrupted link on that page which I could now edit again. Problem solved!
Hope this is helpful for anyone who experience the same problem.

Did you share in the program forum? InDesign

  • My Macbook Pro with Retina display stutters when scrolling

When I scroll my documents up-or-down with the trackpad or a connected trackball ... the screen visibly stutters (can't think of a better word). Doesn't matter what app or which User mode I use. Seems to be getting worse with each Mavericks update!

I had to call Apple and the tech made me enter a bunch of terminal commands to fix this. Unfortunately I can't tell you excactly what it was. I think the best way would be to call Apple.

  • Electronic noise is emitted from my computer when manually dragging the vertical scroll bar with hardware accleration enabled, but no noise is emitted when scrolling any other way (ie hyperscroll via mouse wheel).

    [Firefox 4.0]
When I use my mouse button to hold and drag the vertical scrolling bar, my computer emits a soft grainy sound. However, when I hyper scroll with my mouse wheel, there is no noise.
I do not get the quiet noise with Internet Explorer. I did not get this with previous versions of Firefox.
Turning hardware acceleration off resolved this.
I'm running Windows 7 with a dedicated graphics card (GTX 285).
