Display stay black after wake up

Hi,
I hope there is someone who could help me, I have Macbook 2011 Early running Yosemite 10.10.2 and I have problem with my display turning back on after the sleep mode.
When I open the lid my display stay's black but everything is actually working, I'm able to login but everything is still black. This only happens when I close the lid, if my macbook is still open in the sleep mode than is everything absolutely fine. I had also blue screen two times, any idea what it could be please ?
I have tried to completely reinstall Yosemite, reset PRAM and SMC but none of this worked.
Any advise please ? Is it something with the hardware ?
I pretty much desperate and out of ideas how to fix that.
I will be really happy for any advise.
Thank you !
Best Regards,
Michal

If you have not already, reset PRAM
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and if that does not help, reset SMC
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
which is unplugging the iMac and reconnecting using a precise procedure. You should disconnect ALL cables when you do this. If you have been using power strip, connect the iMac's power cord directly to a wall power outlet for this test. Power up with nothing connected except for the power cord. Once startup completes, add just your keyboard/mouse. I don't know how often this problem occurred, but try running the iMac that way (before connecting any other peripheral devices) to see if you can get it to recur. If you cannot, add back your peripherals (one at a time if possible), and again see if you can get the problem to recur.

  • Display stays black after waking due to USB plug-in/out

    hi,
i forget to unplug the external mouse at times after shutting thsi pup down. when i unplug it AFTER sleep it wakes up again...but the screen stays dark (eventhough at night i see a phantom image very very faintly)
inow i have the mouse coming in through a hub (kesington 4 port, no external power)..soemtimes i can unplug the mouse no prob from that...sometime it still makes the comp awake...with the darkened screen...
a solution often is closing, waiting for sleep, opening...
is there an easier way? (increase brightness? stay alert and unplug BEFORE closing?)
at times i have also had to reboot...
    any info would be grrrrreat...thanks!
    pedro

i have this exact same problem. it happens with anything usb i plug in, or at least it does it with my old usb mouse, printer, and external hard drive. its done it ever since i had the machine about 2 and a bit years ago. ive also noticed it does it with my bluetooth apple mouse. when the pb is asleep with the mains power connected, if i press the mouse button by accident with the display closed it wakes the computer and then if i open the display it sometimes has issues bringing the display back on.
I don't know what causes this whether its a fault or just a design flaw in hardware or software, but i've just learned to live with it and try and remember not to unplug anything usb whilst its asleep.
Your phantom image in the background is caused because the actual display is on and the lcd is making the image, but the backlight isn't turning on so unless ur in the right light you wont see the image, you'll get the same if you just turn the brightness down to the bottom on ur display. the image is still there just without the backlight.
    hope that helps a little.

  • 27" Cinema Display Stays Black after cold boot or sleep

I'm wondering if I'm alone here. After applying the LED firmware update, I am unable to get my Apple 27" LED or Dell u2711 to recognize the connection to my radeon 5870 after a wake from sleep or cold boot.
To get either monitor to work, I have to unplug both of them and plug in a DVI monitor to the radeon and cold boot with that, once the machine is booted, I am able to plugin the 2 minidisplay port connections and both monitors work fine.
Once I shutdown though, I have to do the same song and dance the next morning to get the displays to work.
The interesting part is once the radeon and display port monitors stop talking, The process I listed above is the only thing that works to get them "talking" again - I cannot even just plug a DVI monitor in when the machine is already on, or use the keyboard shortcut for detect displays.
My console logs report 2 different things.
    1. The Dock is reporting breakpoints and errors to CGSGetDisplayBounds
    2. THere are lots of errors relating to the AppleHDAController.cpp

For a lot of people the trick seems to be to reset the pram a certain amount of times. Yesterday I gave it one more try, reset it 5 times in a row and hoped it helped. Started the machine today after shutting it down the evening before, black screen. Resetting pram once again and everything works.
There's a threat (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=559906) running parallel to this one concerning the same problem. For the original poster of the question the solution was to run Disk Utility, check for problems and repair disk permissions.
Neither of this works for me.

  • Mac Pro display remains black after start up.

My 2008 Mac Pro display remains black after start up.  It is plugged in properly and the light comes on, but the screen stays black.  It first started doing this about a week ago, but after a manual restart or two, it would start up properly with the display working.  Today the display has remained black every time I've tried to start up.  Any suggestions for troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Safe Mode uses a very simple way of talking to the screen -- it does not even load the screen driver, and it uses a very common low resolution.
If it does not work that way, it simply does not work. You need a replacement graphics card.

  • HT201263 Iphone4 screen stays black after configuration

Iphone4 failed to respond during normal usage. Therefore I turned off the Iphone4 and restarted the device. Unfortunately the screen of the Iphone stayed black after seeing the apple logo.
As the above didn't resolve the issue, I restarted the Iphone by holding the home and power button. The apple logo appeared again and than the screen stayed black. Although the i-phone is making sounds and you can switch between normal and silend mode.
Than I rebooted the I-phone by using Itunes, and reinstalled a backup, also the screen stayed black after the backup. Although in the beginning you can see the adapter and I tunes logo on the Iphone screen.
Than I rebooted by using Itunes and set up as a new device. I can see the following screen:
After swiping the screens turns black although when I touch the screen I can hear the phone is still working.
How can I resolve this issue?

Call of Duty puts a heavy processing load on several internal components that may be causing them to overheat.  I would suggest that you download and install the Free and highly recommended "iStatPro" utility and post the temperature readings that it gives you, around the time that the time that the display goes blank, here in this Forum.  (Play the game for quite a while and then check your temps in iStatPro.)  That may give us the data we need to diagnose your problem.
You can download it for free here:

    Hope this helps

  • Monitor on MacBook Pro 17" stays black after it sleeps. Computer does come back on. I've reset the SMC and zapped PRAM but this has happened 2 days in row.

I always turn on my computer first thing in morning to see if any important e-mail comes through and since it's at least another hour before I get to work, the computer goes to sleep. Well, yesterday, the display wouldn't wake up and stayed black. I called Apple Tech support and the nice guy on the phone walked me through resetting the internal power and zapping the PRAM. I had no problems for the rest of the day. THis morning, the same thing happened after it went to sleep for the first time during the day after having been started up. THis time I knew what to do, but I'm dreading the same thing happening. Any reason why this is and is there anything else I should do?  It's a 2011 MacBook Pro and runs Snow Leopard (10.6.7).

I am having the similar issue.  I will open my powered up machine, and I will the display will turn on for a few seconds then it seems to go right back to sleep.  I need to close the lid and reopen it again and the display comes back.  Today after it came back on 2 minutes later it happened again.

  • 10.9.3 - Display is black after waking up from sleep

I have a Retina MacBook Pro that I connect to two monitors at work in clamshell mode, 1 via HDMI and 1 via the MiniDP -> DVI adapter. Typically, before leaving work I put the machine to sleep manually before unplugging everything.
Since upgrading to 10.9.3, almost everytime I open the lid of my MacBook, the display is black and will never initialize. It's not off as I can see that the backlight is lit. I can't find any key combination that does anything other than just holding down the power button.
This is a serious issue as it essentially prevents me from being able to continue any work from my desk to home.
I've done the usual, cleared SMC, PRAM.
Below are the logs prior to waking up the machine. It seems that it attempted to wake-up some 10 minutes before I opened the lid and didn't find any displays. It then goes into this weird mode.
The 4:28 event is the "wake up" while it was still in my bag.
At 4:41 is me actually opening the lid and getting the black screen.
Any advice? This did not happen in 10.9.2, even once.

Ok, more information for anyone that might care. The wake-up seems to be the familiar dark wake in order to go into hibernate mode. Except now, it's a death wake. Looking at the logs, I see that it happens exactly 70 minutes after sleeping, even though hibernatemode = 0 (which shouldn't hibernate at all!)
So my power settings look like this:
    Currently in use:
    standbydelay         4200
    standby              1
    halfdim              1
    hibernatefile        /var/vm/sleepimage
    darkwakes            0
    gpuswitch            2
    disksleep            10
    sleep                10
    autopoweroffdelay    14400
    hibernatemode        0
    autopoweroff         1
    ttyskeepawake        1
    displaysleep         2
    acwake               0
    lidwake              1
standbymode is 70 minutes, what a coincidence. I'm going to try setting it to 0 and see what that does.

  • Display flickers rapidly after wake

If I put my display to sleep, then wake it, the display more often than not flickers for a minute before it stops. By flicker I don't mean turns on then off rapidly,, I mean the image blurs then focuses.... That's the best I can describe it. It seems to go away after minute or so. Is this normal?

I forgot to add, it doesn't do this every time.

  • Imac G4 15" Screen Stays Black After Screen Saver Goes To Sleep

I have an imac G4 15" that I just got from a friend that works pretty well, except that after it goes from the screen saver into to sleep mode, the screen stays black. I can hear the error chimes when I try to awaken the screen with the keys, but the screen just stays black. I have tried to increase the brightness, etc. but to no avail. Eventually I have to resort to re-booting and I am afraid that at some point, either the computer won't reboot or one of my external hard drives will crash. Any advice from someone who has experience with this issue would be greatly appreciated.
    THANKS!

  • N97 camera screen goes and stays black after 10 mi...

Since a month im the owner of an N97. Cost a lot of money. From the start the camera-screen goes black within ten minutes after booting. And it stays black, so the camera functionality is completely gone. The primary and the secondary neither work. I did hard resets, firmware upgrades, soft resets and i brought it to a Nokia service center twice. The second time they returned it after 2 1/2 weeks (today) but the problem is still there. Now I just wished i bought an iPhone instead, and its driving me mad...What to do? Like I said, I already went to the Nokia service centre twice... and did all the firmware upgrades.

Almost the same here, with an N97, I found that I have to close the "so called" lens protector after the "processing image" disappear, and or close it when not processing anything, also I have to close it before it goes to stand by and that way the camera will work fine.
Also don't open and close and open the "lens protector".
In my case with a turn off and then on the camera comes to live again, is a pain, but not as bad as hard reseting all the time.

  • MacPro & 30" Cinema Display - Display stays Black at Boot/Will not light up

    I just rec'd a MacPro 3.0GHz/8GB/4-500GB and a 30" Cinema Display.
After connecting all of the cables, when I start the Mac, the display remains black. I have also tried another video card and a 23" Cinema Display as well.
The indicator light on the display blink 3 times, and then a short pause. I have reset motherboard, pulled all ram and re-inserted, and swapped video cards and locations.
I have a wireless keyboard and mouse, so resetting PRAM is out because I can't even get to the Register Bluetooth Device screen!
Any ideas on getting things started?
    MacPro 3.0GHz/8GB/4-500GB   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   MacBookPro 2.0GHz/2GB/160GB

The primary card is the std 7300. The other card is an NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 (PCI Express) from a recently purchased Quad 2.5 G5, that Apple said is compatible.
I have tried the cards in all onfigurations and in all possible slot configs as well, utilizing both DVI ports for each trial.
I have pulled/re-inserted the RAM, and all cable and drive connections.
Still get two short and one slightly longer blinking indicator light on the display, whether the Mac is powered on or not.
Both displays work with other computers attached.

  • Screen display stays black. Please help!

    Hi all,
When I turn on my laptop, the screen does not show the Toshiba logo and it remains black. I've managed to blindly type in the bios password and even type in the user password where i can hear windows starting up but the screen stays black.
Are there any solutions? Like holding down the power button with the battery removed? Help.

Here's an identical situation logged at Toshiba support, They suggest this:
"Turn off your laptop, unplug all wires, remove the battery, and hold the power button for thirty seconds. Afterwards, reattach the battery and connections."
    http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Video-Display/Toshiba-laptop-starts-up-but-screen-stays-black/td-p/238282
If that doesn't help, the Toshiba rep on the thread suggests that it's probably a hardware problem. It looks like it's not uncommon, if the forum thread is any indication.

  • Satellite L10-333: Display stays black until I tap the edge of the screen

I have a Satellite L10-333 which is about 3 years old, it has suddenly began to have screen problems.
It started with a white screen instead of the normal one, and a black line all the way down the middle.
Now when I turn the pc on, the screen stays black and dead until I tap the edge of the screen and when the screen comes to life, I have to hold and press a certain part of the lid so the screen stays on...
Does someone know what the problem is??
I thought it could be a loose wire or connection.
Does anyone else have or had this problem?
    Thanks for your help..

I agree with you. It must be some contact problem. In my opinion it is not important if someone else has this problem too and you must find solution as soon as possible.
The notebook must be disassembled and the screen connection must be checked. Now is the question what to do. Can you check it alone or you need professional help?

  • VLC fullscreen sometimes makes screen stay black after video ends

like the subject says, sometimes the screen just stays black when a video ends while VLC is in fullscreen mode.
I'm using VLC 2.0.8.a-1. I got the laptop in April, just in time for Revision 2013, had the problem more or less from the start, so that's since version 2.0.5 or 2.0.6
So far I haven't found a way to get things back to normal when it happens. I've tried
    press f
    press ESC
    close and reopen lid
switch to console (screen just stays black, even on consoles)
Apparently the only thing I can do is pop up a terminal window via shortcut and reboot.
As far as I can tell /var/log/Xorg.[0,1].log doesn't tell what's going on.
In case it's important, I've only experienced this on my Thinkpad T430, it never happend on my old ASUS laptop or on my desktop pc. An Intel issue maybe? The other two run on nvidia cards, the T430 does have an nvidia card in addition to the on-chip HD 4000 but I don't use it (I'd love to since the DP port is only usable with the nvidia card, haven't been able to make it work with bumblebee yet but that's a different issue).
Any ideas? Which log and config files do you need?

like the subject says, sometimes the screen just stays black when a video ends while VLC is in fullscreen mode.
