Display subtitle language in player

Hi there,
to make my DVD-project perfect I'd like to see the languages of my subtitles in the menu of my DVD-player (hard- and software). It only displays "unknown" for both languages. Same for the audio language.
How do I name the subtitle- and audio-layers? (Encore DVD 2.0)
By the way, I'd like to give individual names to the layers as one language is a local accent and not an international language.
Cheers,
Markus.

I have the same problem. I set language for each audio track (7 of them) and language for each subtitle option (2 of them). When I actualy burn the DVD the player doesn't display anything except 1,2,3,...
Earlier versions of my project work fine with the audio tracks, but nothing ever seemed to work with the subtitle tracks.
Thanks,
Daniel

  • ITunes won't display subtitles (captions) since installing OS X 10.6.7

    Hi,
After the latest OS update (10.6.7) the subtitles can't be viewed anymore in iTunes. You can see the list of subtitled languages but they can't be selected. You can still watched them with Quicktime or VLC player. I checked the iTunes preferences and everything is ok. I went back to my backup from before the OS update and the subtitles work perfectly in the same iTunes version, with the same exact video files.
    What's going on?

Same problem here, I was running iTunes 10.2.1 and had no problems whatsoever with subtitles, but when I updated the OS to 10.6.7 everything got messed up. I tried GilJr-Brazil's suggestion, and the subtitles do show up, BUT! on certain videos it seems an empty line appears between the first and second text lines of each subtitle screen, thus, the second text line is "pushed out" of the window and isn't displayed. When I play the same file on my iPad and iPod Touch, all lines are shown, but still that middle blank line is inserted.
The problem goes beyond this for me; older movies that I added the subtitles to with iSubtitle don't even show the subtitles anymore, or detect they have a subtitle track but still display it. I know none of these video files are corrupted or damaged. It's hard for me to find a pattern the irregularities, since my video files come from different sources, have different resolutions and containers (mp4, m4v, mov..)
The one thing I know for sure is they all played beautifully through all the iEcosystem before the OS X update (iphonepadpodtouchtunestv). Here's hoping something can be fixed with the next software update. I'd hate to have to "convert them" for this AVFoundation thing...

  • Video app: how to display audio language?

Using Apple's native video app to watch movies on my iPad, I wonder why (if you have a movie with multiple audio tracks) those languages aren't displayed. Say you have a movie with english and french audio track. Now, if you want to chose or change the audio, instead of displaying 'English' and 'French' you only get 'Stereo' and ...'Stereo'.
I remember in former iOS versions, the languages were displayed.
Note: Movies with subtitles, you see the actual subtitle language. To turn subtitles on or off for a movie with english subs, you get 'Off' and 'English' !

Many thanks for your quick and helpful suggestions, but they didn't quite solve my issue.  Bear with me, I'm an FCP7 expert considering making a leap to the dark side.  So far, all looks great in Premiere CC except this one sticking point -- displaying audio and video in separate windows for logging.  Why is that so difficult?
I tried the "Gang Source and Program" technique, which did open  audio in source and video in program, but one of the two playback windows freezes, e.g. if the cursor is in audio (source) the video (in program) is stuck in pause.  I reduced playback quality and size to minimum values, and have a powerful macpro with 12 cores and 24G of ram.  IF there is some setting I'm not using to make both windows play, that would solve my problem.
I don't want to just make the edits in timeline because I would like to create subclips to use and re-use in the future.  Any resulting jump-cuts will be covered with cutaways.
It is handy to be able to see both the audio waveform and the video while editing dialogue -- very easy to do in FCP.

  • ITunes stopped displaying other languages

My iTunes recently stopped displaying other languages. What used to be songs in japanese or korean (hangul) is now displayed as block texts. These languages appear on all other programs on my pc. ONLY ON ITUNES does it do this. To test, i even put my entire user as hangul but iTunes still showed hangul as block text. please help.
My itunes is up-to-date and i have already tried doing a repair install of itunes.

How long on average is "some days"?   I loaded a 1400x1400 about 8 days ago yet I do not see it via iTS.

  • How to make WebView able to display Tamil language

    Dear JavaFX users,
We have written a simple web browser based on WebView. On Windows 7, it works well, can display Arabic but cannot display Tamil language
The font Arial Unicode MS is available and with shape TAMIL, and it's possible to display Tamil text in Swing controls but not in JavaFX WebvView !
I thought that WebView was Unicode UTF-8. How to make WebView able to display Tamil language.
Thank you in advance for any help on this issue.
    Best wishes,
    Jean-Claude Dauphin

For thus who are interested, please find below the Oracle response on this issue:
WebView uses the default JavaFX graphics pipeline, which is different than the one used for Swing/AWT. Support for right to left languages and complex characters is only planned for JDK 8 (JavaFX 8), but an early access implementation should soon be available as part of the JDK 8 weekly builds at http://jdk8.java.net/downloads.html
Whatever support for Arabic existing in JavaFX 2.2.x is not complete, and I would not recommend that you rely on it in "production" mode.

  • Subtitle language displaying as 1103 (instead of Welsh) on DVD player?

Hi - I need some help...
I have built a DVD with English and Welsh subtitles - but when I use the subtitle button on the remote, the options displayed are 1: English and 2: 1103.
I have selected welsh as the language in the subtitle stream and have search the forums... Please can you help or make any suggestions?

Hey, Thanks for your quick responce.
Here is some more info for you:
1> The problem is on set-top boxes yes.
2> I'm gonna briefly describe how I setup the subtitle stream 2 (Welsh). I imported an STL file pointing to sereval TIFFs. Then I used the drop down box to the left of the track to select Welsh as the language for that track. Then I turned off all subtitle tracks. This is because I have a language option screen as first play which sets the subtitle stream to either 1.Off 2.English or 3.Welsh.
3> After your advice I tested the DVD on 3 machines
machine1 - displayed '1103' as the 2nd stream subtitle option
machine2 - displayed 'Welsh' as the 2nd stream subtitle option
machine3 - displayed '*' as the 2nd stream subtitle option
Do you have any ideas? I'm stuck on this one... It's really confused me!

  • VLC Player will not Display Subtitles for AVI/SRT Files and Some MKVs

For some reason, I have never been able to play AVI files in VLC with SRT subtitle files. If I drag-and-drop the subtitle onto the video while playing, I see the entry add to the "subtitles" menu in VLC and I can select that but nothing shows up on the video itself. Subtitles seem to work fine in ISO DVD images, DVDs during playback, and an MKV file I acquired from a friend. I recently started using mkvtoolnix to mux MKV files from the pairs of AVI files and SRT files I have but it seems the subtitles never work on those either. On the Windows build of VLC, the subtitles for the exact same files work fine. I have tried changing the line breaks in the SRT files from Windows-style to UNIX-style but it hasn't helped. On Linux, I am using all the newest versions of the software from core/extra/community. Does anyone have any ideas? Is anyone else having this problem?

And them being filtered, smearing and ghosting and looking worse than a standard DVD.

Do you yearn for a VHS encode that stretches the very limits of poor quality, the artifacts
so intense that it makes Stevie Wonder cringe?
Very well then, we shall have VLC.
    It's funny because it's true
For watching videos that don't have their subtitles burned in to the image I would prefer MPlayer. With a few settings it works really well (or has worked for me, so far.) The only problem with MPlayer is that by default, it uses it's own font for subtitles. This is easily fixed, however. Edit your ~/.mplayer/config as follows:
    embeddfonts=yes
    ass=yes
This will fix the problems with MKV's atleast. I can test this with SRT / avi combo really soon too. I know this isn't really an fix to the problem at hand, but VLC just isn't too good with softsubs.
embeddedfonts works only for fonts embedded into mkv containers for use with ssa or ass stylized subtitles, I think.
The man page state it's enabled by default if you have a recent fontconfig:
    -embeddedfonts (FreeType only)
Enables extraction of Matroska  embedded  fonts  (default:  dis‐
abled).   These fonts can be used for SSA/ASS subtitle rendering
(-ass option).  Font files are created in  the  ~/.mplayer/fonts
                  directory.
NOTE:  With FontConfig 2.4.2 or newer, embedded fonts are opened
directly from memory, and this option is enabled by default.
ass means mplayer uses libass to render ssa and ass subtitles; srt subtitles aren't affected by this option.
I agree with you though that where windows has CCCP, linux and mac have mplayer

  • How do I NOT show EN subtitles regardless of player's EN settings?

I'm auhoring a project that includes a little making of segment that's been subtitled in English. I've tagged these as being English, as it looks nice in the On Screen Display when they're selected by remote. Actually, they should only be accessible and appear through the subtitle button on the remote control, so there's no option in a menu to activate these.
This works fine unless a DVD player's settings have been set to English as the preferred language (for subtitle streams). Then of course they appear, as they should. However, my client does not want these to appear, regardless of the player's settings, since English is the default factory preset in the country where this DVD will be sold in mostly, when the documentary is spoken in the native language of that country.
I take it the easy way out of this is to tag the subtitle stream's language as 'not set' (which I have to test), but I would still like the stream to display as being English in a player's OSD.
Is there a pre-script that I can write that will bypass the player's settings? It looks like there's an option using Conditional Elements and States. But if I 'not equal' (!=) the SPRM (18) to English, will it still be selectable by Remote?
    Any tips? Thanks!

Sorry about that, missed the part about that no changes to menu.
One way to do this without changing the menu is as follows:
1.) Set up the First Subtiitle stream Blank
    2.) Second with subtitles
3.) Make script from button on the menu which is
    SET SYSTEM STREAM Blank Stream
    JUMP Track
People then can toggle on and off (if you disable remote then will not be able to toggle)
Is that is what you wanted to do? Basically there is no way to prevent someone to look at the subtitles if you want others to be able to look at the substitles since you said the machines are English being sold in predominately non English speaking area

  • How to display subtitles over videoComponent from getVisualComponent - JMF

I'm writting video player and I have encountered a problem. Is there a possibility to add Component (or something else what could display text in) to Component that I got from JMF method getVisualComponent(). As this method returns Component I can't add subcomponent to it. I tired to add recived Component to LayeredPane and JPanel with subtitles to higher layer of LayeredPane, and it works if I force lightweight renderer. But I'd like to use OpenGL renderer (com.omnividea.media.renderer.video.OpenGLRenderer), and in this case I've got black background in topmost layer with subtitles (even with setOpaque(false) ). Is there possibility to display one Component over another Component (top most component should be with transparent background)?
ps. If video is rendered by open gl renderer it is possible to draw with open gl in Canvas (instead of GLCanvas)? Precisly I've got HeavyComponent from getVisualComponent() that is subclass of Canvas.
ps2. Or how to tie my component1 to component2 in a way that component1 gets paint event when component2 gets paint event or when component2 is repainted?
ps3. Ok I figured out that problem with black background is thanks to havyweight component. If I add some component (lightweight component) on GlassPane it is above all lightweight components and below all heavyweight components. So is there a way to add lightweight component above heavy weight component in a way that lightweight component have transparent background?

Gosh, talk about a confusing mess of questions...
Heavyweight components will not go behind lightweight ones, which is why it's bad to mix heavy & lightweight components.
And yes, you can draw on the video inside whatever is rendering the video. You'd just, essentially, draw the image and then draw whatever you want on top of the image.

  • Subtitle flickering DVD Player 5.4

Was wondering if anyone has heard of any updates to the DVD Player 5.4 subtitle flickering issue? I'm having the exact same issue... that is, subtitles flickering when playing a DVD (player 5.4) that has embedded subtitles used as translated bits of foreign language? Very frustrating. And when I tried to file an Apple bug report, the developer site is apparently off-line.
Also like everyone else, the issue only occurs on DVDs with bits of translated/subtitled dialogue.

Are these subtitles added to a movie in iDVD or to a slideshow in iDVD?  What type of presentations is it?  If a movie where did it come from?  See Bengt Wärleby's post in this topic for items affecting iDVD quality: DVD quality: Apple Support Communities
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
