Display toolbar with icons - Show "File, Open..." icon.

This is a small issue, but it drives me insane.  I want to be able to open a document with one click.  In Fireworks, I have a toolbar below the application bar which gives me the option of clicking on a folder icon to open a file.  I can't seem to find or enable a toolbar that gives me the same option in Illustrator.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

When I open Illy, I elect to either double-click in the window which opens the Open dialog, or press ctrl-O. That is unless the file is a recent one and then I simply choose it from the recent file list.
Take care, Mike

    You may have a bad hard drive.  The flashing folder with the ? indicates that the system cannot find your hard drive.  Use the installation disc that came with your machine.  Insert it into the disc drive and restart the machine holding down the "C" key .  When the restart shows the Apple screen you can release the C keyWhen the installation screen appears, click on the utilities button.  Does the left side of the disc utilities screen show your HD?  If not, then your HD is bad or it could be a loose connection. ifixit.com has a good tutorial on how to replace the HF in the Macbook.  Follow the instructions to remove your HD.  Reinstall your HD and boot up your machine to see if it recognizes your HD.  If it does't, you probably will need to replace your HD>
    Is your machine still under warranty?  If so, take it to your nearest Apple Store for repairs as the repairs will be covered under your warranty.  If you bought AppleCare when you bought your computer your warranty is for three years.  If you didn't buy the Apple Care, then your warranty is only good for one year from the date of purchase.

  • Spotlight : application icons showing as messages icons... why ?

    Hi,
    Searching for an application in spotlight, for example "imovie", instead of showing
    iMovies icons, it shows a message icon (open envelope).
    This happens to ALL aplications...
    Why? How to fix it ?
    Thanks a lot,
    Dany

    I tried a few fixes before I got one to work for me. Some of the fixes I tried:
    I disabled file sharing. I did someone linking the problem to file sharing. (Sorry I don't have the link to hand.)
    Restarted in Safe Mode, deleted /var/folders/* and restarted with a normal boot.
    Stopped Spotlight from indexing using mdutil. Re-enabled Spotlight and cleared the cache.
    Killed the SystemUIServer as described above.
    I have no idea what caused the problem in the first place, but the last one fixed it for me.

  • Show File Open Dialog and get File

    Am creating a document where I want to prompt the user with the File Open dialog box and when a file is selected, I want to get that file and attach to the document. I know the scripting allows files to be attached but how do I display the dialog and then attach using the script.
    Will greatly appreciate the help.
    Am using Adobe LiveCycle Designer 7
    Thanks

    Hi Nilesh,
    You can use the getDataObject method of the Adobe document object. Below is a sample script that you can attach to the click event of a button to see how it works. For more information on importDataObject and getDataObject go to
    http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/acrobat/sdk/pdf/javascript/AcroJS.pdf
    SAMPLE
    ======
    //Get a handle to the Adobe document object
    var doc = event.target;
    //Display a file dialog box and assign the name Attachment to the
    //DataObject that contains the selected file.
    doc.importDataObject("Attachment");
    //Get the DataObject and store it in MyData
    var MyData = doc.getDataObject("Attachment");
    //Clear and display the console window
    console.show();
    console.clear();
    //Output the properties of the DataObject
    for (var i in MyData) console.println("MyData." + i + "=" + MyData[i]);

  • Any way to start up with applications and files open when shutdown?

    I usually just put my Power Mac Tiger 10.4.11 to sleep when I'm finished. But sometimes if an electrical storm is pending I like to shutdown but sometimes I have so many applications and files open I hate to. Is there anyway, maybe even with third-party software, that I can completely shutdown without closing anything and start up later and have all apps and files reopen??

    I don't know if this works in 10.4.11...
    http://www.jinx.de/SmartSleep.html
    But I did read about it working on other than Laptops...
    OS X only has only one "sleep" option. You cannot change its name, but to change its behaviour, I use SmartSleep on a Mac mini (though in the MacBook-like "sleep & hibernate" mode). It works for a mini, though the website only refers to MacBooks.

  • Bridge "file open" icon no longer there - change from CS2?

    In Bridge with CS2 there was a little icon on the Bridge thumbnail that showed if a file was currently open in Photoshop.
    In Bridge CS3 there is no such icon on the thumbnail. There is no way to see in the Content pane (with the thumbnails) which of the files are currently open in Photoshop or not.
    Is this a "feature change" since CS2 that has removed the "open file" icon, or is there a setting that I can't find to make the icon appear again?
    (CS3 with Bridge 2.1.1.9 and PS 10.0.1 on Windows Vista Business 32 bit)

    I've been searching for an answer to this too and was hoping to find it here. So far no luck, but I'd really love to be able to see which files are open and which are not in bridge...

  • OS X Lion Server display problem with menu highlighting and button icons

    I have attached  Grab capture of my screen showing the problems with the window top bars and button icons. This happened after a routine security update.
    Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?
    Thanks
    George Harrison

    I have/had the same problem. Comparible setup running Lion Server GM. The natd service fires off the InternetSharing service from the prefspane instead of the regular natd service. This is verifiable by entries in the system log as well as the lack of the natd process running. Below are my findings from research/experimentation; please understand that this is what I have done to get it working, it is DEFINITELY not best practices and I'm sure not supported by Apple. I'm just conveying what I think is happening and how I dealt with it.
    Natd - Executing the binary referenced in the launchctl job directly launches the InternetSharing service on Lion server. This does NOT act this way in SL server, where it works as expected. Replacing the Lion binaries with The SL ones results in natd working as expected: nat_start and nat_stop in /usr/libexec. In short, if you replace the Lion binaries with the ones from SL, it-s a drop-in fix. Natd isn't your only problem though...
    Dns/named - It appears that Apple has limited named to binding on the loopback adapter only by default on Lion. Adding a listen-on clause to named.conf with the appropriate bindings will fix this. I'm assuming you're running natd, named and dhcpd on the same box...
    Dhcpd - Works fine. It appears broken only because the InternetSharing service is replacing natd (why?!?) and it has a built-in dhcpd server (dumbed down 192.168.2.0 subnet). Once you fix natd, this runs as expected.
    Firewall/ipfw - Gotta have this running so that natd will do translation. Remember to open the dhcp ports to allow the clients to get leases...
    I hope this helps, I'm sticking with SL until these issues are worked out...

  • Thumb Drives Icons only shows file Previews Icon

    Hello all,
    I am trying to change my icons on my thumb drives and External HDDs and I have googled on how to do this which requires you to open get info and copy and paste. But when I do this I keep getting the wrong I icon I keep getting the preview Icon. I have tried different formats jpg,png,ico,also icns but I sill keep getting the preview. How can I get this to work or am I missing something ? I am new to macs so bare with me

    You have to actually open the image you want to use IN Preview, select all, copy and then paste in the destination item's GetInfo window. If the item you are copying from already has a custom icon you can can copy from its GetInfo window then paste in the destination GetInfo. However, it sounds like that is not the case with the files you are attempting to use as the source.

  • Show file type icons for MS Word, Adobe Flash etc

    Hi,
    I'd like to know if anyone has found a way to display custom icons for assets such as MS Word documents, Adobe Flash documents etc. Currently if a user uploads one of these types of asset a generic blank document icon is presented. It would be very nice if instead a recognizable icon would be presented instead.
    I have dug into the filetypes.plist found in /Library/Application\ Support/Final\ Cut\ Server/Final\ Cut\ Server.bundle/Contents/Resources/conf and have had some success getting an Adobe InDesign document display a non-blank icon when viewing it's asset, but there's no documentation out there so I'm kind of working in the dark.
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

    I used the CS Cleaner (http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html) and followed the steps its really easy.. but ur gonna have to re install you Creative Suite   all u do for the cleaner is open it up then select english (e) ->enter->Agree (Y)->enter->All (1) (which is the first option for a full clean i guess)->enter->Product Number its just basically asking you to input your choice number again (1)->enter and should tell u its all done then after u install CS again go to start-> default programs->associate file type->.psd for example->double click it and select Photoshop even though its probably already selected >.< but just do it again cuz it will refresh all the files on the coputer and whala you should c the correct file dysplay Heres pictures of my files before and after as proof

  • Folder with "?" shows before apple icon at startup

    I've searched a bit to see if this is answered anywhere else but can anyone help with why a "folder with a ?" might show at startup just before the Apple icon comes up?
    Could be a myriad of reasons I suppose. The MBP works fine but this is annoying and I may be missing a vital component.
    Thanks all.

    Hi Steve,
    *"a gray Finder folder with a question mark on it blinked in the center of the screen."*
    A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
    *"There were HUNDREDS of permissions and groups found to be in error. The first said SUID is wrong and cannot be repaired (??). The others said things like, "Permission for ABCDEFG is 80 should be 20," but it did not say what I expected, like "..is 80 should be 20, changed to 20.""*
    Mac OS X 10.5: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions (SUID) messages that you *can safely ignore*
    Permissions aren't the issue here. The question mark on boot can mean several things. One, the hard drive is failing or failed, or, your Mac can't find a System Folder to boot from.
    Try booting while holding down the Option key. That should prompt the Startup Manager. Select MacintoshHD 10.5.x and click Restart. If that doesn't work, try booting from your install disk and see if you can repair the disk.
    Insert the installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
    Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
    Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
    Select First Aid in the Main panel.
    *(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
    Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
    If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
    If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
    When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
    Select your start up disk and click Restart
    While you have the Disk Utility window open look at the bottom of the window. You will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% free disk space.
    If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
