Display turn black, but computer still running

I woke my computer up from sleep mode to check my am email of mine. As I was about to log-in to my email online my display turned black. I thought the computer shut down completely, but I could still hear it running. I just shut down my computer with the button on the back of the diplay and then started it up again.
My computer seems fine now, but I was just wondering why that happened? I've had my computer for a few months now and I've never had this problem. I just installed new memory about a week ago..might that have something to do with this happening?
Thanks.

Intermittent faults such as that are difficult to diagnose at distance so the best thing is to get Apple / your supplier to check it over. Apart from the RAM there is nothing you can do to the electrical / mechanical side of an iMac. If it were a software problem it would show more regularly.
If you haven't already purchased it get AppleCare, that will cover the machine for 3 years from the ORIGINAL purchase date and as you are having problems would be a worthwhile investment. You must purchase it before the original 1 years warranty expires.

  • Make iMac Screen black but computer still on

    Hello,
I am trying to make it look like my computer is off for about a week, but it is still really on. It is hard to explain why I need to do so. If I made a solid black image fullscreen for about a week, will that damage the screen? Is there another way to make it so my screen is black but the computer is still on? Thank you for any advice!

    Hi ccrosby94
In System Preferences > Energy Saver set Computer sleep: to Never and Display sleep to a few min's or sleep the display using an Active Screen Corner.

  • IMac display turns off but computer doesn't sleep.

After upgrading to Mavericks I've noticed a problem where my iMac display will turn off but the computer will never enter into actuall sleep mode, I know this because I can constantly hear the fan humming. I have the Energy Saver settings set to sleep the display after 10 minutes and sleep the computer after 15 minutes. However even well after 15 minutes of inactivity (and the display long having turned off) I can still hear that the computer is not sleeping due to the fans still being on.
I decided the troubleshoot the problem using a Terminal command and I was able to narrow it down to single potential cause. According to "PreventUserIdleSystemSleep" the problem stems from a "URLConnection in progress" issue. How does one go about determining what is causing the URL Connection so I can kill the prompt and see if that solves the sleeping issue?
Here's a screen shot of the Terminal output:
Also, if I choose "sleep" from the Apple Menu, the iMac will go to sleep as normal (fans and harddrive sleep).

  • MacBook pro screen is black but computer still on...

I was using my computer one minute, then closed it and stuck it in my bookbag and then headed down a flight of stairs. When I got down there I eventually tried to open up my laptop, and the screen was black but I could hear the computer. When I got home I held down the power button to turn it off, then powered it back on. Same issue. I hear the clicking sound i always hear when I turn the computer on, but no Mac starting chime, although I don't think I've heard that in years. The power button light that goes around the power button is not on, but again I don't think that's ever on. My charger is plugged in (it's orange).
I have tried taking the battery out with the computer off and popping it back in. I tried with the computer on and popping it back in. Same issue. The other thing I noticed is it doesn't seem to be going into sleep mode when I close the screen (that front white light using flashes off and on again when it sleeps I think?).
Im going to try to take it to an apple tech person, but I am studying abroad in new Zealand so there's much less infrastructure here. Can't find an official apple store. But i did want to try some things tonight possibly to maybe fix it.
I'm thinking this might be an nvidia graphics card issue.

Just tried to reset pvram and Pmu and in the steps it says the computer should restart. It doesn't seem to be restarting for me.

  • IPod screen turned black but it still syncs

    Hi,
starting from yesterday my ipod screen turned white at first and now is black. When I connect my ipod to my macbook, it still syncs and it looks like it's still in work. I tried to hold the sleep button and the center button together but it will just turn the ipod off. I don't know what to do.. is the lcd broken and i need to chnage into a new lcd? or my whole ipod is broken? My ipod is first generation, and used it for 4 years.. please help me..!

    Try:
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. It could be the display or maybe its driver circuits.

  • Screen black, but iBook still runs

I have had a white iBook G3 for over 5 years. I had just closed it and put it to sleep. When I opened it up not long after that, it seemed to wake up (breathing light went away), but the screen was all black. I restarted it and it booted up as normal, except the screen was black. But not pitch black; I could see the faint white box with OS 9 displayed. From all that I've read on here I probably have the inverter cable failure, or something along those lines...
I read something about PMU reset: is this safe to do (I don't want to lose anything if possible)? if there is no hope for a self-fix, any idea how much this repair costs? Where is a good place to go? I could go to an Apple store or Comp USA.

You could always attempt getting another used iBook with the same specs for $200-300 and then have the 2 to be able to switch things around with various parts. As I was trolling the web for used/refurbished iBooks, I found some great deals (non-ebay) and one was from a place (local to me), here in the SF bay area. Also, TigerDirect (where I got mine) has some of the 600MHz versions with 30GB hard drives and the rest of the basic specs (and Jaguar 1.2.8 pre-installed with NO disks), which comes with a year warranty through Joy Systems (a major company that does alot of the Refurbishing for other companies) for about the same price that I paid for my lesser iBook from them in August... They even have a $20-30 rebate on it I think until the end of the month... Oh well, no more 600MHZ model, but they do have the 500MHz with 30 GB HDD, 256MB RAM (I don't think that includes the built in 64MB as mine said 256 as well and it was actually 320MB total) etc and should also include an airport card, for $329.99 (same price I paid) and the $30 Mail-In Rebate offer good til 12/31/06 (which I did not get a chance to have). Just remember, you get iBook, the battery, the AC Adapter, and nothing else (pre-installed software only, no disks, no manuals). One year warranty (on a refurb) though can be hard to pass up...
I can't remember how to do the link behind a keyword, so here is the link to all Apple Refurbs from TigerDirect:
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=23717 19&sku=J156-4060
As for the other place mentioned, that would be PowerBook Guy (from SF):
    http://www.powerbookguy.com/xcart/catalog/index.html
And they have all kinds of refurbished Mac Items (iBook G3, G4, Powerbook G4 Titanium and Aluminum, MacBook, MacBook Pro, plus older laptops) and they also have parts and I believe, do repairs too. Not all laptops listed will be available in stock (click on the model link and then "systems" to see what is available). Decent prices, I won't even bother with the G3 prices as you can get a 12inch iBook G4 *1 GHz* 512MB RAM 30GB HDD CD Drive (ROM only I think) with a minor case crack (if you don't mind that kind of thing), for $399.95 or same specs without case crack for $429.95... iBook G3 500MHz start at around $299.95.

  • My ipods screan is black and it wont turn on but it still makes a noise when i plug it in to the charger. can anyone help?

my ipod isnt turning on but it still makes a noise when i plug it into the charger can anyone help me?

    Hey there cameronw99,
It sounds like you are unable to see your iPod Touch screen, as it stays black but it makes the connection tone when you plug in the USB cable. Use these steps to resolve the issue with the iPod from the following article:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    chttp://support.apple.com/kb/ts3281
If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let it charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged. Learn more about charging iPhone and iPod touch, or iPad.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more aboutrestoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • Why does my iMac display keep shutting off?  Computer still running in the background.  I've tried unplugging and restarting, to no avail.

Why does my iMac display keep shutting off?  Computer still running in the background.  I've tried unplugging and restarting, to no avail.    The computer is well out of warranty - about 7-8 years old, running 10.6.8

Checked.... the settings had not been inadvertently changed, but I did move the scroll and reset them back to the original.   Hasn't shut off again.... yet.   Will re-post with follow-up one way or the other.   Thanks.

  • Imported old computer via time machine into new 2012 macbook pro, but its still running ilife 09 instead of 11?

imported old computer via time machine into new 2012 macbook pro, but its still running ilife 09 instead of 11?

I am assuming you had iLife 09 on the old computer - when you moved everything over, that came along with it.
I also have older versions of iLife (on install disks) and just recently got a new 2012 Macbook Pro. I noticed that iMovie 11, iPhoto and Garageband (I think) are listed in my Mac App Store Purchases with a notation to "accept". So you might want to check MAS to see if the apps are sitting there.
Now, I have chosen not to accept them for now for two reasons: I have iLife 11 on a disk and prefer that rather than having it tied to MAS/Apple ID and as long as I have my disk version installed, I also still have iDVD which I use a lot. I'm not sure if "accepting" those three from MAS would wipe out my iLife 11 installs including iDVD (which would be unacceptable for me). So, since I already have the latest version, I've opted to ignore the "accept" and, in fact, will leave it like that - if I ever sell this machine, the buyer can then accept them if they want with their own Apple ID. So before accepting the apps (if they are listed in MAS), you might want to check to make sure that your iLife install isn't wiped out - that is, if you have iDVD and want to keep it.

my iphone 4s screen has just turned black but it is still vibrating. I was reading other messages similar and it says to resart phone but holding the home and lock button. However my lock button doesnt work what should i do?

Is it the Home button that doesn't work, or the Power (Sleep/Wake) button? If the Power button works, you can switch it off. Not sure how you have been able to do anything without the Home button working?

  • The screen on my ipod nano 2nd generation turns black. It still plays music. I've tried resetting the ipod to clear the black screen and the screen goes back to it's normal state but after a few minutes the screen goes black again.

The screen on my ipod nano, 2nd generation, turns black. It stills plays music. I've tried resetting the ipod to clear the black and the screen goes back to it's original state. But after a few minutes the screen turns black again, while the music is still playing. What can I do about this?

That's just the iPod's backlight timer going off, signaling the iPod's backlight to turn off to conserve battery power.

dont you know your apple ID password ?
IF you know that, try restart your iPhone if it doesnt work try restoring your device. If it doesnt work again, you have hardware problem. Try changing your screen.

  • 17" studio display turns black

    Hello,
My 17" Studio Display turns black after I change my display-resolution.
It wont change when I restart the computer.
I can only startup in the save mode(holding the shift key at startup).
It had problems before when I tried to start a game(zoo tycoon).
The display whent also black, but restored after a forced restart.
    Does anybody know some advice?
    Marc

You sound as though you have a similar problem that I am experiencing. I also have a Studio Display (Graphite Clear)
I was trying to connect my powerbook to a second display which is my old graphite CRT model. After hours trying to resolve the same problem, with my powerbook giving every indication that it was connected and operational, but I was still not getting an image on the CRT screen.
Eventually I discovered one small footnote on a Cinema Display help forum which said that the ADC to DVI adapter is not compatible with CRT monitors.
No mention of this is made anywhere on the ADC DVI adapter spec.

  • TS1367 My MacBook Pro when in sleep mode display turns black unable to wake.  When using the mouse it goes across screen like using an eraser and finding the middle of screen to get to the password area to turn back on.

really have a hard time when leaving the computer on when attending other matters in the house. When returning, the screen is completely black and unable to wake(?) by touching the mouse or touch pad to put my password and be able to use the computer.  When I move the mouse pad looks like I am using the eraser like in photoshop and it clears the screen little by little.  Now I am able to point to the middle of the screen and erase the area where the password is in order to get to the screen and use the computer again.  Anyone else having this problem?  Took the laptop to the apple store near home and they told me there is nothing that can be done and I have to wait untile the new operating system, Mountain Lion comes out and supposedly this will fix the problem.  HELP!!!!

I was so frustrated I call the Apple Tech Support and they walked me through.  It has been doing great.  The screen still turns black but now, when I touch the mouse or touch pad, I get the password prompt.  The Apple Store did not help but talking the the Apple Tech has helped a lot.  Thank you.
