Display Turns Off After Opening Computer

I have a very annoying problem of my display turning off and not turning on until I restart my Macbook Pro by holding down the power button.
For example, I will close my computer (power cord not plugged in) and it will go to sleep. If for some reason the computer turns on while it is still closed (this happens when I pick it up/move it around sometimes) and I then open the computer, the display will be on momentarily and then turn off leaving me with a black screen. The only way to turn the display on again is to restart my computer.
Another example: I might close the computer with the power cord in. I will then unplug the computer (still closed) and walk somewhere, then open the computer. The display will be on for a few seconds and then turn off, leaving me again to restart my computer.
The third example is the worst. Sometimes with the power cord still in, sometimes with no power cord, the display will just be blank when I open the computer.
With all of the above occurrences, I know the computer is running because I can see the caps lock key light change when I press it.
Does this make any sense? Please help me, I will be going to college on Tuesday and I would really like to have it so I don't have to restart my computer every time before class.
My display was not always this way, it has just been like this for a few months.

  • Display turns off after opening MacBook

This morning when I opened my Macbook, the screen came on to the password login, but not even three seconds later turned off. I closed it and opened it again and it did the same. I have tried restarting the computer multiple times, but nothing has worked. I was just using my Mac nit even 12 hours before and it was working fine.

  • Yoga display turns off after 1 minute

I'm having an annoying problem with my new Yoga related to the display and have not seen any other posts with a similar complaint so perhaps this is a simple fix that I'm just not able to sort out on my own. My display turns off after 1 minute of inactivity. The only means for changing behavior like this that I am aware of is through the Control Panel Power Options. My settings for "turn off the display" are 10 minutes on battery and Never while plugged in (note screen shot attached). Regardless of my settings, the screen turns off after 1 minute. I've changed the settings to multiple configurations and restarted with no change in behavior. Perhaps there's some other settings area, maybe something specific to Lenovo that I'm not aware of (since this is my first Lenovo laptop). Anyone with similar problems or insight?

This may be a Windows 8 issue. I finally fixed this problem by identifying the screen saver as the issue (and I wasn't using a screen saver). Type "lock the computer" into the search box after clicking the search charm, which brings up the screen saver dialog box. Mine was set to 1 minute, though I'd never set it myself. If you can't change it, choose a screen saver and you should be able to do so (and can then switch back to no screen saver). BUT, here's the problem. Other things you install (or settings within things you install) can apparently change and override whatever you type in for the delay time. Try applying your new time and exiting from the dialog box, then open it back up again. I was finding that it kept going back to 1 minute. To reset things so that you can get control again, type "user accounts" into the search box and when the dialog box comes up, choose "Reset Security Policies". Then you can go back to the screen saver dialog and successfully change the delay time. • T42 Display turns off after moving

    Hello everybody!
I´ve got a problem with my Thinkpad T42 (2373fwg), XP prof. with the latest updates running. After installing the latest drivers for display (ati) and for "ThinkVantage Active Protection System " the display turns off immediately after moving the Thinkpad. I can turn the display on again only by reboot. The error appears even in a second after reboot, so it doesn´t concern to windows. The system doesn´t crash, it´s only the display. The problem might concern to the shock sensor, but I don´t know how to solve it.
Does anyone of you has an idea?
    Thank you and kind regards
    Bill

I have a similar problem: T42 (2373-5wg) Screen blanks. At first screen blanking was rare and seemed to happen when moving the pc, but now the screen blanks within 1-3 minutes after turning on the laptop, even if the computer is left untouched after being turned on.
It is not OS related as the blanking appears even when in BIOS setup or booted on a liveOS CD.
I can't tell for sure if the system crashes or not as the display goes blank (doh!), however, I have seen no reports of registered crashes in the visible part of the boot process.
The screen blanking appears quicker (or even instantly) if the computer is warm (e.g. turned off just before being turned on).
Blanking appears simultaneously on the LCD and on any attached external monitor, so I believe this rules out a defective LCD, backlight or inverter board.
I'm thinking it's a failing graphics adapter or system board, or maybe a loose connection that causes a component to overheat and fail. But I don't know which or how to fix it.
It IS out of warranty, of course. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Niels
EDIT: It seems this could be yet another case of badly soldered BGA chips that seems to be troubling the T4x series:

  • Air Display Turns Off After 10-15 mins - Why? What's the fix?

I recently upgraded to OSX10.8 on my early 2012 mac mini. I have been using AirDisplay as my screen.
I've run into an problem. The AirDisplay prefpane now turns itself off after 10-15 mins if its not being used. It also doesn`t activate on reboot.
This is obviously a problem as I don‘t have a monitor.
I started to use logmein instead, but its not ideal as its mouse isn’t quite as usable (it works in the current release after many months of bugs and patchy performance).
I've been going back and forth with Avatron for a few weeks (they've been very supportive), and they proposed two solutions:
Uninstall / reinstall using a newly downloaded package
Delete the hidden com.avatron preference files
    Neither has worked.
I also made a rather pathetic to write an applescript to select the menu app item "Turn Air Display On" , but I didn't really know what I was doing (here's my poor effort below). As I didn‘t get this working when the menu option was available, I didn’t proceed.
    tell application "System Events"
set UI_Enabled to UI elements enabled
              tell application process "AirDisplayStatusItem"
              entire contents
                   tell menu bar 1
                        tell menu bar item 1
click menu item "Turn Air Display On"
                        end tell
                   end tell
         end tell
    end tell
get entire contents of application process "AirDisplayStatusItem" returns
    --> {menu bar 1 of application process "AirDisplayStatusItem", menu bar item 1 of menu bar 1 of application process "AirDisplayStatusItem"}
    Result:
error "System Events got an error: Can’t get menu item \"Turn Air Display On\" of menu bar 1 of application process \"AirDisplayStatusItem\"." number -1728 from menu item "Turn Air Display On" of menu bar 1 of application process "AirDisplayStatusItem
Has anyone any ideas on how to resolve this?

Could it be possible that you changed the settings in the power profile which is not in use?

Doing those doesn't turn off your phone?
As stated hold down the top button only until you see the red slider to power off your phone.
If that doesn't work then take it to Apple and see what they say.

  • Yoga 13 display does not Turn off after idle

I have the computer set to the balanced power option, and the disaplay is set to turn off after 5 minutes on battery and 10 minutes when plugged in. Unfortunately the screen never turns off.
Anyone know how to fix this problem ?

    hi tmpst,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
If a wireless device (mouse, keyboard, etc.) is plugged to the computer, the display, screen saver or sleep function might not work. If this is your case, try to:
    1. Remove your wireless device (might include a usb dongle)
    2. Apply the Moving mouse causes laptop to exit sleep mode fix
If you have Power DVD installed, apply http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913405
    Let me know your findings.
    Cheers.

  • IMac display turns off but computer doesn't sleep.

After upgrading to Mavericks I've noticed a problem where my iMac display will turn off but the computer will never enter into actuall sleep mode, I know this because I can constantly hear the fan humming. I have the Energy Saver settings set to sleep the display after 10 minutes and sleep the computer after 15 minutes. However even well after 15 minutes of inactivity (and the display long having turned off) I can still hear that the computer is not sleeping due to the fans still being on.
I decided the troubleshoot the problem using a Terminal command and I was able to narrow it down to single potential cause. According to "PreventUserIdleSystemSleep" the problem stems from a "URLConnection in progress" issue. How does one go about determining what is causing the URL Connection so I can kill the prompt and see if that solves the sleeping issue?
Here's a screen shot of the Terminal output:
Also, if I choose "sleep" from the Apple Menu, the iMac will go to sleep as normal (fans and harddrive sleep).

Reset the SMC and the PRAM.
    Reset the SMC
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Detach the computer's power cord.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Reattach the computers power cable.
    • Turn on the computer.
    Reset the PRAM
    • (Re)start the computer
    • Immediately press & hold the CommandOption+PR keys
    • Wait for two startup chimes
    • Release the keys and allow the computer to boot.

hi, as the title suggests my powerbook screen turns off after a few minutes before my screensaver is set to come on and when i come back and press a key or move the pad it wont start up so i need to close the powerbook then open it up again for it to activate. its not a huge problem but my programs which connect to the internet seem to lose their connection when i open it up again. is this normal? is there a setting i can change?
    thanks

Is there a way to "disable" Standby, Suspend and Off just when watching movies (in fullscreen or not)? I want them to do what they usually do in all other cases.
Setting them to 0 in xorg.conf does the thing, but I need that functionality only when I'm wathing movies. Making a script that alters adjustments in xorg.conf isn't the best solution - you'd have to restart X every time you want to watch a movie .
    Cheers,

  • L305D-S5935 Unresponsive After Display Turns Off

I have a L305D-S5935 running Windows Vista and it becomes unresponsive after the display turns off as set to do so in the power settings.  I cannot push any key or button or move around on the mouse pad to get it to turn back on.  This is very frustrating and the only way to get it to come back on is to to a hard restart.

Turn off your laptop, unplug all wires, remove the battery, and hold the power button for thirty seconds. Afterwards, reattach the battery and connections.
    Then reinstall TVAP.

  • My iphone turned off after I got off the phone. It was fully charged and it went black. I plugged it into my wall charger and my computer, but nothing has showed up, its still dead. It was totally fine before. What happened?

My iphone turned off after I got off the phone today. It was more than half way charged and it went totally black. I plugged it into my wall charger and my computer, but nothing has showed up. It doesn't register on the computer either, the charge symbol doesn't appear, and there is no apple logo to be found.  I have no idea what happened! It was totally fine before. I tried charging another ipod with my usb and wall charger to make sure that they were still working, and they weren't the problem. What happened? Is the phone dead for good? I have a 3G if that changes anything. THANKS!

Press and hold both the on/off button and the home button and release them both when the apple logo appears.  That will reboot the phone.  try that.

  • ITunes stops playing and cannot connect to Remote app whenever the computer display turns off??

I have a Windows system with iTunes, and an iPhone with the Remote app installed, through which I use to play music on iTunes. Until recently iTunes would play regardless of whether my monitor was on or not, and I could connect to iTunes with the Remote app regardless of the monitor state. Now, however, after updating both iTunes and Remote with the new versions that came out around the time of the iPhone 4S release, whenever my computer turns off my monitor, iTunes stops playing at the end of the current song and the Remote app cannot find iTunes. This is not a system sleep state, I just have the power options set to turn off the monitor after 15 minutes of inactivity. Sleep and hibernate are disabled on the system and always have been, expressly for the purpose of allowing iTunes playback via Remote. If I jiggle the mouse and the system turns the monitor back on then I can manually reenable playback, and Remote can connect to iTunes again. I can't find any setting in Preferences that would control this. How do I fix this? Thanks.

I'm so glad someone else is having this problem.  I am in exactly the same situation!
    1. Windows Vista
    2. Upgraded iTunes to 10.5 and upgraded remote with iOS 5
    3. My computer has never been set to sleep, but the monitor turns off after 20 mins.
    4. If the monitor goes to sleep, itunes stops streaming music and Remote can't connect to it
    5. If I change my monitor off time to 1 hour, then in 1 hour itunes will stop streaming - it is ABSOLUTELY connected to the monitor sleeping.  Almost like iTunes can't connect to the network the the monitor is off.
Please help!  I have been using remote for a year and this didn't happen until I upgraded to iTunes 10.5.
