Display Undetected: Cintiq 12WX to iMac via DVI + Mini Displayport Adapter Thunderbolt

Hello all. I'm connecting my Wacom Cintiq 12WX to an iMac 27-inch, Late 2013 (brand new) via a DVI cable connected to the iMac's thunderbolt port with a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. Returning a "No Sync" response on the tablet, iMac is not detecting the display.
The cable is DVI-D (Dual Link), the adapter is DVI-D (Dual Link), and the port on the Wacom appears to be DVI-I (Dual Link) except with a vertical socket for "Analog Ground" connection which is missing in DVI-D – but from my understanding this shouldn't be an issue. Could be wrong, not my area of expertise.
However, in the past I have used this device with a Late 2008 Macbook and a DVI to Mini DVI adapter to the Mini DisplayPort, back when Apple was pre-Thunderbolt, same cable and it worked like a charm.
I've contacted Wacom's support, but they usually take a day or two to get back so I'm hoping someone here can shed some light.

Mini DisplayPort adapter for 23" Apple HD Cinema Display?

I'm sure this has been asked and answered here, but I can't find it! (grrr...)
I've got an 23" Apple HD Cinema display and a new iMac. The iMac has a "mini DisplayPort". Now, the Cinema Display has a 3 x 10-pin (not 3 x 8) DVI connector. The WIKI thing about DVI calls it a "DVI M1-DA (Dual link + USB)".

If it's the old, plastic cased, 23" display, it may use ADC (Apple Display Connector).

External monitor loses signal to macbook pro through DVI cable and Mini DisplayPort Adapter

So I had my external monitor connected to my MBP with a DVI cable and a Mini DisplayPort Adapter, for a while already. But sometimes, the monitor would lose signal from the laptop and gives me a white noise screen. Now, the monitor can't receive signal at all, even after I got a new Mini Displayport Adapter. When the monitor and the MBP is connected by the cable and the adapter, the monitor would say "no signal" and the MBP screen would flicker (I think it's trying to connect to the monitor, but can't). The new Mini Display Port Adapter also makes the screen flicker, so I'm not sure if it's the problem is at the adapter or the DVI cable. I'm pretty sure it's not the monitor.
What do you think? Have you ever have a screen flickering problem when your MBP is connected to an external monitor?

I have had the same problem. By following your suggestions I got to arrangements. I could not send them off to the side. When I hit the mirro disply key everyting worked. I got it solved by clicking in arrangements and setting displays to mirror display.
I am still have a problem of no sound coming through my tv.

I am attempting to connect my MacBook Pro (early 2011) to my Sony LCD TV (KDL-46XBR6) via the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI. I have successfully connected the two devices and can select "SONY TV XV" in the sound preference pane. I can see and hear what I'd like, however, I can only monitor the sound in 2 channel stereo. I have my TV connected to a Sony 7.1 audio receiver via an optical cable and can monitor 7.1 sound via other sources (Blu-ray, broadcast, etc). When I go into the Audio Midi Setup utility, I am unable to configure my speakers to be anything but 2 channel stereo. I am given the options for "2ch-16bit", "2ch-20bit", "2ch-24bit" and "Encoded Digital Audio". When I select "Encoded Digital Audio", my output automatically changes to Built-in Output. Has anyone been able to successfully resolve this issue? Thanks for all your help!

I have tested it with the Moshi (http://store.apple.com/us/product/H1824ZM/A/moshi-mini-dp-to-hdmi-adapter-with-a udio-support) and Belkin (http://store.apple.com/us/product/HA342ZM/A/belkin-mini-displayport-to-hdmi-adap ter) adapters, both purchased from the Apple Store with no such luck. Have you or anyone else had success with any other third-party adapters?

Yes, it should work with a mini-displayport to VGA adapter. Since a 12wx also can take DVI you could use a mini-displayport to DVI adapter instead. Why go analog when you can keep it in digital!
I guess the usb is for the pen.

Am I able to add a second display (LED TV) to my iMac via my network?

I have a 21.5 inch Late 2009 iMac (too old for Mirroring to Apple TV). I would like to be able to use my LED TV as a second display, so that effectively I can view non-iTunes media in my lounge room. I currently have the iMac connected to an Airport Extreme via Ethernet cable. I have an Airport Express also connected to the Extreme via Ethernet cable in Bridge Mode in the lounge room. I am wondering if it is possible to connect the TV via Ethernet cable to the Express (the TV has a network connection input), and then be able to use the TV as a second display for the iMac. I know I can do this if I connect the TV directly to the iMac via Ethernet, just am unable to determine if I can do it via the two Airport devices - I guess I am wanting to make the TV a "Network Display". I do also have an Apple TV connected via HDMI cable to that TV. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The easiest way would be to set up a seperate user account. That user would have their own iTunes with their own Library.

2nd Monitor Connected Via DVI to VGA Adapter is Blurry

I have a G4 dual 1.42 GHz (the last G4 model) and have an Apple 20" Cinema Display connected to the ADC port and a 21" CRT monitor connected to the DVI port via the DVI to VGA adapter supplied with the G4.
The CRT monitor display is blurry. I have tweaked display settings in System Preferences and the monitor's controls and nothing helps. I used this monitor in a dual monitor setup on a Power Mac 9600/300 and it was razor sharp, so I know that the monitor is okay. I could pull a display card from the old Power Mac 9600 since it's not being used anymore, but I hate to add another card to the G4 because of the heat problems. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Apple 20" CD connects fine to MacBook Pro 2009 via DVI to Mini displayport (adapter) but not to Radeon 5770 (either MDP ports) on MacPro 2008?! Have Eizo CG223 on DVI to 5770. Any ideas?

Here's the setup:
Eizo Coloredge CG223 DVI to DVI on MacPro 5770 interface (ACD works fine on this too, naturally).
Apple Cinema Display 20" have the DVI connector. I have a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter on this, into one of the 5770's MDPs, neither of which seem to work.
Plug the same ACD via DVI (with DVI to MDP adpater) into my MacBook Pro 2009 MDP and it works fine as a second screen.
So what's up with the 5770 MDPs? I've seen online that the card should at least support two displays, either MDPs x2 or MDP and DVI. I've seen there may be an issue with three, not two.
Any ideas please?

Striped down to bare inputs - monitors and keyboard/mouse. Works! Dimerising must have interfered with it. Phew!

No signal via DVI to VGA adapter on my video projector Sharp PGM 15X

I have a big problem with my video projector. It´s connected via mini DVI to VGA adapter to
the projector. The problem is, Mac OSX decect the projector but there is no picture.
To resize the solution on both, or one of them doesn´t help.
When I use my Bootcamp and reboot with Windows XP there is a picture on the video projector.
I cant believe this.
What should I do to fix this problem?

I got my Mac Mini yesterday and I am having the exact same problem as you are having.
I've tried on two different TV's but it is just not sending a signal. Is it faulty?

27'' iMac i7 w/ Mini-Displayport = connection nightmare...

this IS a long post , please accept my apologies & bear w/ me...
when i got my 1st Intel iMac ( white, 17''.. ) i built a desk to stash away cabling & peripherals out of sight yet highly accessible/practical, i learned this pays off when i played in a band & ''managed'' the rehearsal room's/instrument's cabling !
recently i sold my alu 20'' iMac & got a 27'' iMac i7 + Ergotron MX wall mount & wasn't too happy because the Mini-Displayport ( mDP.. ) to HDMI adapter for my plasma TV hang sloppily at the bottom of it but....O.K, i guess i could live w/ that !
later, some extra $ came my way & i got a Wacom Cintiq 21UX + Ergotron LX desk arm. that's when all **** broke loose :
the Cintiq has a DVI-I plug, the iMac's mDP to DVI adapters are plain DVI so an extra adapter cable w/ further 2 very boxy/nasty plugs had to be added.
worse, the iMac only having 1 mDP in/out port means i can't have BOTH the TV AND the Cintiq connected, hence more cables + adapters hanging under the once slick & gorgeous iMac/Ergotron combo.....NOT nice ! since the HDMI cable is 15mm & the Cintiq is another 15mm, the bundle coming off the iMac is thick & makes moving the Ergotron around awkward ….
no problem i thought, time to buy a mDP extension/splitter ! this would :
1 - spare it a daily plug/unplug routine thus preserving the iMacs port's health - mDP don't strike me as the sturdiest of plugs + the price repairing it if it went wrong - ouch !…
2 - given the difference in diameter of the cables i have & the one of a mDP, moving the arm around would become A LOT easier…
3 - would place the adapter plugs - by now there are 5, each 1 prettier than the next.. - out of sight w/ the other cabling
considering Apple's, & quality accessory makers catering for this kind of machine, extensive industrial design experience, this can't be BUT straightforward right ?…..well much to my dismay, no, NOT REALLY !
1st frustration :
after EXTENSIVE web search there are a few extensions out there but i only found one splitter cable - Tripp Lite's P584-001-M2M : http://www.tripplite.com/en/products/model.cfm?txtModelID=4747
however when asked if it would allow to have BOTH my TV & my tablet connected ( but to use 1 at a time..) their answer was :
''....Since the P584-001-M2M is designed for use with devices that will connect direct to the unit via Displayport connection, we cannot guarantee compatibility when using the DVI to Displayport adaptors mentioned in the inquiry...''
in short : it sounds like they don't know & they are NOT alone - so far NO ONE has been able to shed some light on this !!??

said splitter is some 20 cm long & the splitter box is as big as a Vicks Vaporub jar : that + the 5 or 6 adapters will look REAL nice & polished hanging from the iMac, right ?

in a day & age where Mac Minis & iMacs are ROUTINELY used as home media centers, NO ONE saw this coming ? hence no one produced the necessary hardware to solve this ?……….i understand DVI-I isn't the most advanced plug format out there BUT if Wacom uses it on the Cintiq 21UX, it's not also so ''last ice age''...
so, PLEASE; PLEASE; PLEASE does anyone know where can i get either :
1 - a 1 meter long cable w/ a male mDP plug & a splitter box w/ BOTH a HDMI & A DVI-I i could plug my stuff into without any adapters
2 - a 1 meter long cable w/ a male mDP plug & a splitter box w/ 2 female mDP plugs i could plug my adapters into but out of sight
3 - ANY other solution/suggestion so i can leave my iMac's mDP plug well alone AND not have a cable bundle as thick as a thigh coming out at the back thus making the Ergotron unusable

HT3924 I can't get my iMac 27" 2009 Mini DisplayPort to work as external monitor for Macbook Air Thunderbolt...

I am using a Mini DisplayPort Cable from iLuv as the connector between them. Upon connecting the cable or hitting Command/F2 on the iMac, the iMac will go blue followed by the Macbook Air, then both will flicker and usually the iMac reverts back to its native screen and NOT display the Air's. Or sometimes the iMac will go black while the Macbook Air becomes very slow and choppy, and while selecting the Gather Windows option in the display window in Settings will show the Imac display window, I can't really do anything with it. I even tried switching the ends of the cable to see if that would help, but it didn't. Advice?

Your display may not be on the "approved" list, or was removed from it.
Apple's Mac lines includes a form of digital copy protection that will prevent protected media, such as DRM-infused iTunes movies, from playing back on devices that aren't compliant with the new priority protection measures.
The Intel-developed technology is called High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) and aims to prevent copying of digital audio and video content as it travels across a variety of display connectors, even if such copying is not in violation of fair use laws.
Among the connectors supported by the technology are the Mini DisplayPort found on Apple's latest Macs, in addition to others such as Digital Visual Interface (DVI), High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI), Gigabit Video Interface (GVIF), and Unified Display Interface (UDI).
Apple has apparently acquired a license for the technology and is now using it across its lines to to prevent transmission of purchased iTunes content (and some DVDs) to devices that don't include support for HDCP.
The problem can often be solved by using an HDMI to Component Video adapter. Many believe that Component Video will give you a better HD picture than HDMI without any of the hassles of HDCP.
Generally try to avoid using HDMI. When able, use Component Video. With Component Video you get full HD quality and you will never have HDCP hassles (which of course is why Hollywood wants to ban it).
However sometimes a display can be HDCP certified and then later be removed from the certified list. So purchasing a new display may not be a permanent solution.

Could my current mac with the Mini DisplayPort use thunderbolt displays? Even any other thunderbolt technology?

i am in the market for a new desktop computer, iMac or new Macpro if coming soon and priced right. i want two displays and I want my current Macbook Pro end 2008 with the Mini DisplayPort to be able to us a hunderbolt display. is this possible?

The TB cable / signal is a (new technology) Muxed signal of both PCIe and DP data. Without the TB chipset / hardware on the host machine, it can Not communicate properly down the Thunderbolt cable and to any TB device.
As you can see in the cable cut-away... it's NOT just a matter of adding individual DP lines along with some individual PCIe lines and wrap it up in a single cable.... where you can choose just to use only the DP lines. Nope... this is highly improbable and suggests that using an OLD (non-TB) computer will NOT work at ALL, if connecting to a TB display or any TB device.

5.1 audio from iMac using a mini toslink adapter?

Can I get 5.1 audio from mid 2011 27" iMac (ultra build I think it was called) using a 'mini Toslink adapter'? If so does OS X Yosemite (10.10.1) decode Dolby Digital and/or DTS in iTunes12 ? I've had this computer since its release and always wondered. Today I bought a mini Toslink adapter, fingers crossed I guess. I have a Logitech Z-5500 kicking around, to get 5.1 I need to either hook up optical (Toslink), coaxial, or 6ch 3.5mm x 3.
anyone else doing this?

It looks like you have some questions about outputting surround sound from your iMac with iTunes 12.
Your iMac does support optical audio output, as mentioned in the tech specs:
iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) - Technical Specifications
Headphone/optical digital audio output (minijack)
You should also be able to connect the Mac to your receiver using your mini-Toslink adapter, as you may have already found out!

HT3235 MacBook Air is connected to an external monitor via Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter. At one time it worked just fine, now when I plug the monitor into the Mac, the mac screen goes blue and nothing appears on the monitor.

This monitor works, on a PC. Could the connector be bad or the port on the Mac Air? Any ideas?

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode with the MacBook as the main screen. In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen.
You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to use the MacBook’s keyboard and trackpad to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.
If you can’t see your MacBook screen because it’s broken or the backlight is off use the F7 key to switch between Extended Desktop and Mirror Display.
(From the MacBook User Guide: F7 (video mode toggle key) Switch between dual-display mode (extending the desktop across the built-in display and an external display) and video-mirroring mode (presenting the same information on both displays).

Use Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter to connect Mac Mini to Cinema Display?

I have a new-to-me current model Mac Mini and want to use it with my 20" Cinema Display (model A1081).
The Mac Mini instructions say to use the HDMI port on the Mac Mini with a DVI>HDMI adapter cable. I seem to have only a DVI>Mini DisplayPort adapter cable. I'm guessing this will be OK to use, but don't want to fry the system straight out the box
Can anyone confirm it's OK to use DVI>Mini DisplayPort connection to drive the display?

One thing I've seen when rummaging through the forum is a suggestion that with MDP>DVI adapter is problems with display waking from sleep. Short of setting it not to sleep, is there a workaround to wake it up again if it doesn't respond to usual stimuli?
