Display went black

Was using my macbook as normal, then poof screen went black thought battery was dead but it is 65% also noticed on restarting I can faintly see my log in screen at the right angle. Any opinions as to what is wrong. Of course my apple protection plan just ended in october so I'm sure it will cost me.

This happened to mine... it is most likely your display inverter you can hook it up a external monitor to check in that case the other monitor would work.... you can either replace it your self but it is a very hard job or you can take it to the mac genius. I did both i replaced it myself but since the piece was refurbished it messed up again like a month later (the piece costed about 75) so then i took it to them i got it fixed for 118 and that its no problems so far and they were very nice.
I suggest just taking it to the mach store

Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Ibook  display went black

    I have an ibook g3 800.
I am experiencing the display to be back when I turn on the ibook.
I had the logicboard replaced under the logicbord recall.
I am not sure what might have caused the display to go black. It was working a few a months ago and then it went black. I know the HD spins up, because I can hear. I tested the computer in target mode and know the HD mounts
I am able to get the computer to show me any display when connected into the apple VGA (RGB) Cable.
Is a key combination that I need to use to get the ibook to work off an external display?

Maybe the answer is somewhere in here:

  • 2011 MBP display went black

My 15" MBP was bought last month.
I started up my MBP this morning I heard the machine running sound and saw the power light turned on.
However, the screen was totally black till loaded to the login page.
I forced to shut down by pressing the power button.
The screen didn't show anything for the 2nd and 3rd trial.
    Finally succeeded in 4th time...
What's wrong with my MBP? is it the display problem?

  • 23" HD display went black. What now?

    HELP!
Is there a DIY diagnostic protocol for a dead 23" Apple Cinema HD Display (2 yrs old)? I use my system everyday in my work, so, I've got to be sure that packing this giant thing up and sending it off for weeks (?) is absolutely the LAST RESORT before I do it.
Backstory: Thunder storms in the area last Thurs. So I shut down everything and unplugged. No nearby lightning strikes that I know of, but, when I powered back on - the monitor was black. Nothing. No flicker. No grey screen. Not even the little "I'm here but not awake" light in the front. No matter what I did (restart, replug, etc) Nothing. Everything else was fine. Called Apple support. All they could do was run me through a PRAM reset, then, wish me luck at the local re-seller. Since then, I've connected the CPU to another slightly older Apple display (sans power brick) and all was fine with the CPU. So, it seems like the problem is either the monitor itself or the power brick (A1097). Quite a big price spread to risk replacing the wrong one. What can I do to test either one myself before sending off or buying new? Fast!
    Thanks,

Wow, BSteely, thanks for stepping up.
No, I don't know of another ACD owner nearby. The local Apple reseller didn't seem eager to give me any names either. I decided to order a power brick "blind" from DV Warehouse knowing that the most I'd be out would be about $40 (or 25% re-stocking fee) if I had to return the adapter. I'd also know at that point that I'd have to buy a new monitor. Good that the 23" HD price has just come down, though.
Do you know if an electronic meter check thing would work on the power brick?

  • G4 display went black. Please help.

My screen will not wake up. Once I move the mouse, the screen will show for about a second and then it goes back to black. The display light is on and the computer seems to be working. I've tried shutting it down, vacumming the port, pressing f2 to change the contrast. I've also tried (with the quick second I can see the screen) to go to system preferences and then display to see if I need to change the brightness but I don't have enough time to see anything to get there. I run a small business out of my apartment so every second this is down it's hard on me. Any help greatly appreciated.

I have the same issue (on, then fade to black (actually dark reverse video) in 2 seconds) - I used to be able to fix it by shutting & reopening the display; now when it happens, I need to twist the display (please don't break your display trying this) - I grab the top-left & top-right corners of the open display, twist the left back, and the right forward. I twist back & forth until the display light up and stays lit when I let go. Once working, I leave the display open, using the power button to sleep instead of closing the display. Once the cat nudges the display and it goes dark, I repeat.
If you can't get it going and you need the screen working fast, press Crtl-Alt-Command-8 to activate reverse video, and increase the display brightness.

  • 2010 imac display went black, but hard drive still working

Does anyone have an idea as to why the screen is black?  Was on it about an hour ago with no problem.  Have turned it off and back on, can hear it, but no matter what screen stays black.

    Lolo55,
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that your iMac display shows a blank screen.  Here is the best troubleshooting resource to go through when experiencing these symptoms.

  • 20 Inch Cinema Display Went Black

i just rebooted my mac mini that is connected to a 20 inch Cinema Display and the monitor never came back to life. The screen is totally black and the firewire, USB and video cables are plugged into the computer fine. When I look at the computer on Remote Desktop from my laptop i can see that the mac mini is fine. i can also see that when i hit the on/off button on the display that it prompts the shutdown/restart popup on the mac mini so it is communicating with the mac mini. i have also plugged the display into my PB and again I get the shutdown popup when i hit the display's on/off button. is there anything to do to bring it back to life or is it dead? its not even a year old.

    Hey,
Same problem happening here, You described it exactly. Even the magenta box. Mine also happens most in the open windows, not when the desktop. I am trying to figure out when exactly it is happening. The third item I have issues with is that blocks of data are 'stuck' in a genie expansion like motion so it is blurred and dot displaying in that 3x3 inch square section. Could have something to do with refreshing? Sometimes I notice the window will fix if I manually resize the window.
Hope this helps any one who is trying to help us out.

  • Powerbook display went out, Help!

I was just using Safari, and seemingly out of nowhere, I heard a loud whirring (I think from the optical drive) and then the display went black--mostly, I can still sort of make out the menu bar and dock. I've had this happen once before, but that time it was because the power cord came unplugged. That is not the case this time--the power cord is plugged in and the indicator is lit green, meaning it is fully powered. Hitting the power button brought the display back to life for fifteen or twenty seconds, but then it went out again. I tried restarting, no help. My external monitor is working fine however.
Powerbook G4, 1.5 ghz, 12". Any ideas? Thanks.

I don't know exactly what you've done so far, but I'll start from scratch.
    1. First (and I suspect you've already done this), go  to System Preferences/Displays, and choose 1920 x 1200 resolution. You can pick another resolution later, but let's start at the max and move down later, if you choose.
    2. If you cannot change your screen resoution, please enclose some more detailed info, i.e., what happened when you tried to go to different resolutions. Did it stay the same size? Get any error messages?
Oh, and leave your responses here, so others can give their input!

  • Rented movie and during playback screen went black

After about 20 hours of error messages, I was able to download a movie rental from iTunes. After watching less than half of the movie on my iPad, first the screen froze and then the screen went black. I closed the video application and I also reset my iPad, but still the video screen remains black when I open the video application. Trying to download and watch movies on iTunes is terrible. Please help ...

I am deployed in Iraq and have only my 1st gen iPad with me.  I purchased 4 movies via iTunes however, the internet here is very bad and there were a ton of interruptions so it took almost 4 days to complete all the downloads.  When I started watching one of my movies, it froze and the display went black.  I to tried a restart first on the video application and then on the iPad itself to no avail.  It wasn't until I reset all settings in the general tab of the systems settings did the video application start responding but if I tried to play the same move, it would do it all over again.  When I go to iTunes and do a check for downloads, nothing is there however, I believe that with all the interruptions, bits were missed in the download process and iTunes simply cannot detect it.  Also, if I do delete the movies in question, I will have to buy them again because the iPad hasn't been synced to my computer thus no transfer has taken place.  Apple either provide a workaround for re-downloading movies free of charge to iPads or refund us our money for content that you have failed to deliver.....

I plugged it into my tv through the mini display port and I can see everything fine on the tv but the screen on my laptop is black. Everything else seems to be working fine. • I have reached out  to this community as my Iphone display gone black and got the solution to keep home and power button pressed. It worked but I would like to know why it went black

I have reached out  to this community as my Iphone display gone black and got the solution to keep home and power button pressed. It worked but I would like to know
    1. Why it went black and is there a permanent fix for this
2.Will the IOS gets automatically updated as I feel the IOS was 5 when I got the phone in 2012 december
    3.Do you suggest 7.1 for Iphone 4

    1. There is no way of knowing. These things happen.
    2. The iOS only gets updated when you want it to be.
    3. You should always update to the latest iOS your phone will support. Apple do not write the updates to make your experience worse.

  • TS3274 I have a new iPad mini w/retina display.  Recently, the screen flickered with red lines across the entire screen.  Anyway, the screen eventually went black. Now it does't work.  Anyone have any suggestions?

My screen just went haywire.  The screen flickered with red strips vertically.  I thought it was part of the game I was operating until the screen went black and a white strip illiminated at the top.  I tried turning teh system off, but it would not allow me to turn it off.  After about 5 minutes, I was able to turn it off.  Anyone have this occur?  The Ipad mini appears to be ok now.

    I Also have this problem!!
In my situation, the screen simply started exhibiting the same symptoms a few weeks ago (early February) for no apparent reason.  At first I thought the screen was dead, but discovered the heat solution by accident.  Now I turn it on and keep it from going to sleep until I go to bed.  Thank goodness the battery is still awesome on this thing.
I bought it new and still has the original screen, I keep it at home (never below 62 degrees).  Coincidentally, this happened a day or two after the expiration of the warranty!!  Any help figuring this one out would be eternally appreciated.
