Display with powerbook g4

i've seen two displays being used as one display (applications can be dragged from one screen to the other, pretty much making one big screen) on a power mac g5. so i was wondering if this is possible with a powerbook screen. thanks

Just turn off "Mirroring" in the "Displays" pane in "System Preferences" (You may be able to change this setting with one of the PowerBooks F keys. Look in the manual.)
For an iBook, you will need an unsupported firmware patch.

  • Using an external display with Powerbook G4

I have a Powerbook G4 15" (1.25GHz powerpc G4). I would like to purchase an Apple external display to use with it.I have two questions please:
    a) Is this Powerbook compatible with both the 20-inch Apple Cinema Display AND the 23-inch Apple Cinema HD Display? It is unclear from the Apple website whether it only works with the 20" screen.
    b) would I be able to physically shut the Powerbook (whilst keeping it on) whilst using it with the external display (and an external keyboard) or would I need to keep the Powerbook open to prevent it from going into sleep mode? I'd like to be able to shut it so it doesn't take up desk space but continue to work on it.
    Thanks for any help
    Mark

You ended in the 17" PowerBook forums but your question should get the same answer here as in the 15" forums. I'll take "b".
Here are two Apple articles on using the G4PB with the lid closed. It's slightly different between USB and BlueTooth keyboards, so they get separate articles
    With BlueTooth keyboard/mouse
    With USB keyboard/mouse
I've not used an external monitor on my G4PB so I'll let someone else talk about that.

  • Connect the powerbook 15"-Display with a new G5 dual and a ACD?

    hi
i wonder if i could connect the pb 15" display with a new G5 dual and turn the pb off, only the display on?
    that would be fun.
i am working with a pb 15" and a ACD 20" with Photoshop mainly.
the 15" is the palettes‘ server and the ACD is the main working screen where i retouch my pics.
so if i buy a G5 dual now, i would have to buy a ACD30" for example to use one display for all the Photoshop Palettes and couldn use the pb 15" anymore?
any other less awkward solutions i am not aware of maybe?
    thanks"

I'm pretty sure that you can't use a PowerBook for it's display only. You already know, of course, that you can use the PowerBook, as a computer, with an external monitor, with or without the PB's own display running, but so far as I know you cannot use a PB solely for its display.
So, if you bought a G5 dual now, and bought an ACD 30", you could use both your ACD's with your new G5 dual, the 20" and the 30" , but your PowerBook would have to watch the proceedings from the sidelines.

  • Apple 16" Color Display with 15" Aluminium Powerbook?

I have pulled my old Mac 16" Color Display out of the shed, only to discover that my 15" powerbook Al running 10.4.6, once connected via DVI-VGA and VGA-Apple VGA, won't show the necessary 832 x 624 resolution option, so I can't use it.
When I connect my older Pismo powerbook running under 10.3 via VGA-Apple VGA, it does show the necessary resolution!
Is this a a symptom of 10.4, the DVI adaptor or the video card? Can I copy some driver or something from 10.3 to 10.4 to add support for 832 x 624?
    Brendan

I think you are trying to use equipment that is just too far behind your modern PowerBook. The Apple 16 inch display was sold 1991 to 1994.
The computer-end of its cable provides a code at startup that a Mac with a similar connector would use to determine what display is attached, and what resolutions are appropriate. Perhaps the adapters you are using cannot manage to pass that information through in a coherent way.
More modern displays with a VGA (three-row) connector use a DDC side-channel to negotiate their capabilities with the computer system.
On the other hand, perhaps the PowerBook simply cannot do that resolution. If the 16 inch display were a multi-Sync display, there might be another resolution you could use.

  • 23" Studio Display with Power Book (17")

I am considering running a 23" studio display with my 17" PB. From perusing the discussions here it seems this is entirely possible (although there is some debate over keeping the clam shell closed during operation...). As a photographer and heavy user of Photoshop my concern is this: will I get full perfromance from the 23" in this configuration...will it perform to the extent that it would if connected to a current desktop Mac. Also....will adding a studio display to the PB diminish its performance in any way, either with its own screen on or off? For your information, the PB is relatively new; purchased within the last year. Also, if there are any Photoshop users out there: is it possible to set up the smaller 17" screen for things like palettes etc., and reserve the 23" for the image being edited, only? Thanks.

    PowerBook 17" & G4 Quicksilver desktop

It's plug and play, so that's not an issue.
The debate about running the clamshell closed is so that, if the extra desktop space is not required, there is no point "stressing" the video ram and videocard and cpu by having the other display running - all resources can turn to the external display.
As for extending the desktop, yes you can do that with Photoshop - you have the space of the PB and the new display, entirely up to you what you put where - just drag across.
Performance wise, I don't imagine that Photoshop would cause as many difficulties as say video editing might, and I've not come across anyone saying that they have had performance issues from running the extra display - you may get some extra heat as the processor is taxed though.
If in doubt, you could test at an Apple Store or reseller.
Also, you might find getting extra ram a useful upgrade.
Hope that helps, best of luck.

  • I can not pair my iphone with Powerbook Pro 10.6.8

I could not pair my iPhone 4 with Powerbook Pro 10.6.8 using Bluetooth. The code # is displayed, but refused.

I am not familiar with the Mini bluetooth system, but in most cars there is a possibility to enter it to see what it was paired to. In that menu delete all earlier devices that it was paired to. Set the bluetooth in the iPhone to off, then to on again, and then let iPhone and car search again: probably they will find each other again and then type the pairing codes.

  • Still Graphic displayed with idle DVD

Not sure exactly how to describe the feature, but if i stick a commercial DVD into my powerbook, i get a prompt from DVD Player that asks if i want to start the disc from the beginning or "last time played." What i'm interested in is what the DVD is displaying during this prompt. Generally, there is a graphic displayed with the title and artwork from the film . It is a still, but i'm not sure if its a special menu or slideshow or what.
I'm having trouble finding documentation about it as i don't even know what its called. Is anyone familiar with this feature or what the technical name/behavior is? Is it something that has to be scripted?
    Thanks!

    Hi:
    Wellcome to the forums !
Search for About Jacket Pictures in DVDSP User Manual. I think that's what you mean.
I never used this feature but heard that not all players can deal with it fine. Look at this SEARCH in this forum for other threads related:

How do I use an external display with a macbook pro?

Just buy the proper adapter cord, such as MiniDisplay port to HDMI for example.  Plug it in and it will be automatically recognized.  Use System Preferences > Displays to set options.
The display can Mirror your primary desktop or Extend the Desktop.

    2. when data is not available it displays #, I want empty instead of #
I am in BI 7.0 environment. in object Properties also everything ok.
    Regards
    Vijay

    Vijay,
Your infoobject is compounded with any other infoobject and compounded infoobject is blank.
There are 2 things to do.
First, load the compounded infoobject so that you will get correct value like XX/VIJAY
Secondly, if you do not want to see the value of compounding infoobject 'XX' then insert this compounded  infoobject just above the main infoobject in query designer and hide it.
Let me know if this is not clear to you.
    Thanks,
    Harry

  • Hi - How do I connect an HDTV as a second monitor to Thunderbolt display with macbook pro in clamshell mode?

I have a Late 2011 Macbook Pro in clamshell mode connected to a Thunderbolt Display with the built in Thunderbolt cable. I want to then connect an HDTV via the Thunderbolt port at the back of the Thunderbolt display. I already had a  cable that I thought would work which turns out to be a MiniDisplay port to HDMI cable and therefore not compatible with Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt (Mini DisplayPort not being the same technology although it uses the same port - although I'm not an expert !!) So far a web search has provided me with the only solution being using a Thunderbolt dock or storage that has multiple Thunderbolt ports and then  using that to daisychain inbetween the Thunderbolt Diplay and the HDTV. The cheapest solution I can find for this would be about £250. Surely not ??!!!!
Many thanks for any comments - Nik

You could also use aThunderbolt dock with HDMI, such as:

  • Acrylic 20" Cinema Display with new MacPro

As I read the posts here, to use the old cinema display with an ADC connector I will need to buy Apple DVI to ADC adapter to connect my 20" cinema display with ADC to the new MacPro?
This new DVI to ADC adapter provides power for the cinema display as I understand which is why it's so expensive whereas when cinema display was connected to my Powermac G5 the power came thru the ADC connection?
    Is this correct?
