Display Won't Go On

Just got this note this morning from my grandson about his iBook G3 900. I am not sure if it is a display problem, but that seems to be the main symptom. Any ideas will be appreciated.Hi. I just opened my iBook and I heard the disk spin up and it came out of standby but the screen was not on. I tried closing it and opening it again which did not work. now, when i close the lid, it will not go into stand by, it remains on. I tried plugging it into an external monitor but it would not send the video signal out because i did not have the displays preferences icon open that would automatically detect the monitor. I don't think the graphics card is malfunctioning, it was replaced less than a year ago. Let me know if there is anything I can do.

If your iBook is really a 900 MHz, the beginning manufacture date on them was April 22, 2003:

The Apple Rep didn't know what he was talking about. It could not have been manufactured in 2002, and the manufacture date has nothing to do with eligibility under the program, anyway. It's the original purchase date that determines eligibility.
I bought my 800 MHz iBook G3 used on eBay, it was not covered under AppleCare, and it has been back three times for the free logic board repair. The fact that it has been fixed once seems to make it more likely to need the repair again, rather than less likely (although no firm numbers on that, just a casual observation).
Go to the Main Support Page. At the right toward the bottom there is a box below the text "About Your Support Coverage." Enter your iBook's serial number in that box and hit the "Go" button. The original purchase date of your iBook will be returned to you.
It is three years from this purchase date that determines whether or not you are still covered under the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program.
However, this does not sound like the logic board problem to me. It sounds like a backlight (inverter cable) and reed switch problem or maybe the inverter board.
DT & T Computer Services in Fremont, California does free diagnostics. If it's the logic board (which I doubt), they charge $195. If it's the inverter cable or inverter board (more likely), the charge is $125. You would have to pay shipping both ways.
It would seem to me that this may be your best option for repairing the iBook. DT & T has the best repair prices I've found online, and they double Apple's 90-day warranty on repairs to a full six months.

    my problem is pretty simple.
    Sometimes, after having used an external display with my Macbook (using the Apple Mini DVI > DVI adaptor: http://store.apple.com/au/product/M9321G/B?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY ) the Macbook's own display won't power on during the next boot-up. I can hear the hard-disk start up, and the system boot, and I'm even able to navigate my way into the user login and shut the computer down (all via the keyboard). So the computer is definitely powering up (and in a seemingly normal way), but the display isn't.
    For example, last night I was using an external display with my Macbook. This morning I plug the display back into my Mac Pro, then power-up my Macbook. But the Macbook's display won't turn on. It's as though it thinks the external display is still plugged-in. I know, that if I re-connect the external display, the Macbook's login page is displayed, but only on the external screen.
    The problem only arose after I started using this particular external display (a cheap 22" BenQ, model G2222HDL 'senseye 3'). I wouldn't normally use the display with my Macbook, but my Mac Pro has a **really** noisy optical drive (CD/DVD), which makes watching films pretty unbearable (if you're into sound anyway, which I am).... so until I get my Mac Pro's drive sorted (when I have a few spare days when I won't be needing it), I'll have to continue using my external display with my Macbook to watch films.
    My Macbook's specs are as follows:
    2.1Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook (2008 model - I think, maybe 2009?)
    4Gb RAM
    Running OS X 10.5.8
    Are there any known display issues with these models of Macbook? Or are there any software/firmware updates that address any display issues?
    In general, I don't update the software/firmware unless I need to, or unless something doesn't seem to be working properly.
    However, I've just checked Software Update, and noticed there is an SMC firmware update (1.4). So I might give that a go and see if the problem persists.
    However, the problem is intermittant, and kind of unpredicatable, so I might not know for a while if it solves the problem or not.
    Has anyone else had a similar problems?
    Alternatively, is there a possibility there is some kind of virus or file-corruption causing this problem?
    My girlfriend has a similar model of Macbook (which she's never had any problems with). Recently I moved a whole bunch of files from my Macbook to hers, and she noticed that hers had a similar issue starting up, where the display failed to turn on.... so it seems like
    a) it might be a common-ish problem in this model of Macbook
    or
    b) perhaps I've got some kind of virus on mine?
    I've been using Macs for about 15 years (yet, I don't consider myself a computer expert, when it comes to the technical details). In those 15 years, viruses have never really been a concern to me, as I've never really thought they were much threat to Macs. However, I guess, as Macs get increasingly more popular, there's a possibility people will write more Mac-specific viruses...?
    Anyway, I'm open to suggestions : )

    PS I've tried:
    -re-starting the computer multiple times (which sometimes works, but usually doesn't).
    -re-setting the SMC (which usually works, but not always)
    -plugging/un-plugging the external display to try and jog the computer into noticing it isn't connected (which doesn't work)

    I can only help if you are using an NVidia graphics card, as with that you can use the NVidia Control Panel to setup the external display.
    Connect the display
    Start NVidia Control panel
    Select the Display icon
    Then select Change Display Configuration
    There you can set the resolution, extend the screen or create a copy et.c.

    I just recently upgraded to the Mountain Lion OS and now my computer won't go into the screen saver (set at 10 minutes) and the display won't go to sleep (after 15 minutes).  It is on all the time.  Any suggestions?

    I have the same mini display port adapter and Belkin DVI-HDMI cable (but a Panasonic 42" Plasma HDTV) so just set this up on it to see if I could duplicate your problem, unfortunately for you (but good for me) I can't.
    I connected the adapter+HDMI cable before switching the HDTV on and then powered up the MBP. It (the HDTV) came up with my background right away (it's set at Mirror not extended Desktop) and when I run System Preferences/Displays get the following. Sorry but all I can confirm is that adapter+cable combination should work ...
    Try doing a Parameter RAM reset - hold down command/option/p/r keys at start up and wait for three chimes before releasing the keys?

    It's a brand new notebook.I've done nothing on it, other than installing Windows updates and creating recovery disks.I set the "Turn off display after" option to 1Minute.IMPORTANT: I set display brightness all the way to zero, the lowest setting possible, using either the keyboard keys, or the brightness option in Windows.Leave the notebook idle for a minute, the display sleeps like it should (the notebook is set to sleep after 30 minutes, it's only the display that sleeps, the notebook is still awake).Move the mouse, press keys on the keyboard, the screen does not come back up. The computer is still up and running-i can toggle keyboard backlight On/Off using the keys, but the display won't wake up.Press the "Brightness +" button on the keyboard, the display wakes up. This is the only way to wake it up. The other option is to press and hold the power button, force a shut down, and start the computer again.This happens ONLY when "brightess" is set to the lowest level. If brightness is set to even one level above the lowest, the issue cannot be reproduced. Moving the mouse or pressing any key on the keyboard will wake the display up in this situation.Both Intel HD graphics 5500 and GTX 850M drivers are up to date.BIOS is up to date as well.Battery/ Plugged in does not make a difference.     Thanks for your reply Avenger Well, I called up HP tech support.The lady took remote control of my notebook and tried numerous things in the registry (regedit).But the issue could not be solved. She then arranged for an on-site support engineer to visit my house.The Engineer showed up right on the next day, and tried the following:- Updated ALL drivers, even the ones which were already up to date!Checked with my desktop monitor, the issue cannot be reproduced on the external monitor- the external monitor will wake up on moving the mouse, but the notebook monitor stayed dim (no backlight).Opened the laptop, took out the display cable, cleaned it with some solution he had, put everything back together- issue not resolved, external monitor wakes up but notebook monitor stayes dimmed. This is not the only problem I was having with the notebook, the other problems are:Battery would stop charging when the notebook is switched OFF, and the charger is turned ON and OFF a couple of times.The battery lock doesn't "click" in place, it slides automatically to the "unlock" position, it's loose.There's a dead pixel on the display. He offered me two choices: 1> Replace motherboard (to solve battery not charging issue), replace chassis (to solve the battery lock issue), and replace display panel (to solve the dim display + dead pixel issue). =======OR======= 2> Return the whole notebook back to HP, and get a new notebook (same model) in exchange.  I picked option 2. We shared a cup of coffee, and the tech left (he was very nice and friendly). The next day, I got an email from HP, with a PDF attachment, asking me to take my laptop, along with a hard copy of the email, and payment invoice, to the HP store. HP store took my computer back, but they didn't have a replacement ready, they asked me to come after 7 days to pick up a new notebook (same model). I really loved my Envy.   • MBP display won't stay off, wakes from sleep

    I have a newish 15" MBP, 1680 display, hooked up to a Dell external monitor when it's at home. When I go to bed I cut power to the display via control-shift-eject, but generally don't put the computer to sleep overnight.
    With this new machine, after it's been running for a while (as little as a day, or as long as a couple weeks), the displays will come on again in the night. Once this happens, the displays won't stay off for longer than about five seconds. If I then put the machine to sleep, it'll wake itself up minutes or hours later (generally not long enough to miss a Time Machine interval). The only cure is rebooting.
    I tried an SMC reset, but that fix only lasted about as long as any other reboot.
    I've since tried systematically removing every peripheral (a USB hub, the external display, any directly-connected iOS devices) and testing display-off after each; no change. I've turned off my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, then disabled Bluetooth on the computer, turned off wifi, quit every menu extra (jitouch, Viscosity, Dropbox, Pastebot, Fastscripts, Transmit, Teleport), and quit every running application. The problem remains repeatable after every step.
    It's repeatable at the moment — any suggestions for other things to try, preferably short of the reboot which temporarily masks the problem? I'm a little concerned that it's going to manifest at some point while I have the laptop sitting in a bag, which will then cook itself.
    I'm on 10.6.4 now, the problem started on 10.6.3.

    Try checking the system logs in Applications/Utilities/Console.app for clues. The entries carry time stamps. Usually a wake event will leave some trace. By matching time stamps to the time of occurrence you may find the culprit.

    Long shot.
    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
    In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
    Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
    If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
    If you want to make your user library permanently visible, run the below command in Applications/Utilities/Terminal.
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/
    You will need to do that after any updates.

    Have you checked the Energy Saver settings? System Preferences / Energy Saver.
    If the settings are what you want, you can try this. Change them to anything at all then change them back to what you want. The restart the computer and reset the PRAM.
    Shut down your Mac.
    Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
    Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
    Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • External Display Won't Recognize in Native Resolution

    I have a 40" Sony Bravia 1080p TV. I'm currently hooking it up using mini display adapter to vga, then vga into the PC port in the TV.
    Display preferences recognizes the TV as a VGA display. which is fine, however it won't display in the 1920 x 1080 60HZ setting.
    Sometimes display preferences recognizes the external display (TV) as a SONY TV. When this happens, it allows me to select a 1080p setting, which works great.
    Does anyone know why my mac recognizes the external display as VGA display one time, then a SONY TV the next?
    is there any way to manually set what type of external display is hooked up?
    It's not a huge issue, but it's frustrating, and i don't understand it.
    Any help is appreciated!

    Probably the TV needs to be turned on before the Mac. And when the Sony is switched away from the TV to another input and then switched back to VGA, that's probably when the Mac loses connection to the TV's identity.
    You could try the Detect Displays command when that happens, or else try unplugging and replugging the the VGA connector. That's a pain but it might work.
    If you want a real permanent solution, something like the Gefen DVI Detective will work. It was designed to fix problems like this.

  • Display won't turn on even though my Macbook Pro detects the display

    I've had a long running issue with this but now rather than intermittantly, it just won't work at all. I have a 17" Mackbook Pro running Lion and an older style aluminium 23-24" cinema display (the boxy one). The problem also exited under snow leopard. I used to arrive home, pull my MBP out of my bag, place it on a stand, plug the power, USB for my keyboard and mouse and display cable (inculing the USB and firewire) and hit the keyboard and my display turned on and off I went. But now when I try to do that, I get the light on the display flash once and then the display appears to be dead. I'll go into detect displays and it's there and detected but I can't for the life of me figure out why I get no response from my monitor other than one flash from the little power light. Anyone know how I can fix this? Is there a fix or is it a hardware problem? I've zapped the PRAM and done an SMC reset. No dice.

    This is a long-standing problem we've all been waiting on a fix from.  I was rooting for the EFI update this morning to fix it, but no love.
    I have a MBP 15" early 2011, with a 27" Cinema Display (the last pre-Thunderbolt one)... and periodically, when returning from somewhere and plugging the Mac back in, it acts like it's seeing the monitor, but just doesn't display.
    I've found, after a year of this, that the following all helps:
    1) leaving nothing else plugged in while first plugging in the display.  Don't hook up the power or USB, don't have anything plugged into the USB hub on the back of the monitor, or it won't ever detect.
    2) Just keep trying... leave the MBP open, plug in the display port and nothing else... if the big monitor doesn't turn on, but the MBP display flips to "I'm an extra display" mode, unplug, wait for it to go back to "MBP is solo display" mode, then repeat... eventually, for me at least, the big monitor will turn on for real, then I can close the MBP and all is well.
    This is sucky, but it does eventually get the 27" to show something. 
    The other symptoms are all the same... when it's doing this, the computer thinks it's displaying to the 27", USB and power are being sent to the MBP just fine, audio's working... just nothing is actually on the display.
    Oh, and for me, it also does it sometimes when the 27" goes to sleep, so I have the syspref set to "never sleep"... it goes black from the screen saver, but never turns off, 'cause then it's iffy if it'll come back on.
    I'd LOVE for them to eventually fix this... it's something in either the MBP firmware, the monitor firmware, or just something wrong with one or the other that isn't fixable... but it'd be nice to know.
    In the meantime, I rarely use my MBP as anything other than a desktop nowadays, so I leave it plugged in, don't let the monitor sleep, and all is well.

  • Macbook pro retina display won't wake on windows 8.1

    Hi,
    I have installed windows 8.1 on my new Macbook Pro with retina with using bootcamp no problem there only issue is after my laptop goes to sleep it won’t wake up. It seems that the issue is with the display driver or something related to it because even when only display is off I have the same problem.

    I am aware there are symbols. My technical issue is the MagSafe2 adapter. What people typically do is connect their laptops to the wall when they're battery dies off. No biggie. I can attach it to the outlet. Well, when I connect the adapter to the outlet, nothing happens. Nothing happens at home, at Starbucks, at McDonalds, at other people's home.
    When I brought this up with technical support in August when I bought it, technical support person said I might have issues with my electrical wiring at home. I've never had issues with electrical wiring at home because my other Apple products work fine when connected to the outlet. My July 2011 MacBook Pro charged without a hitch.
    And I was able to charge my Retina MBP only at night or very early in the morning.
    But this weekend, I couldn't charge it at all. I'm starting to think it might be the MagSafe2 adapter problem.
    I feel rather ridiculous buying the highest-end of the 15 inch Retina MBP. It cost me over $3000. Right now I'm working with my 5 year old Hewlett Packard laptop. At least my HP works, which can't be said about this top-of-the line Apple product.
    Probably explains why Apple stocks are falling. At $3000 I shouldn't be having these type of problems.

    So the screensaver will kick in when there's no activity for XX minutes, but the screen won't sleep after YY minutes like it's set to in "Energy Saver"
    I wouldn't mind it so much if I could enable an active screen corner to sleep the display, but I don't have that option in my "Dashboard & Expose" system pref.
    One note: there is no mouse/keyboard attached to this iMac, I use "teleport" to share one keyboard/mouse with this iMac G5.

    *A few suggestions:*
    Change the energy saving options, to put the display to sleep and the computer to sleep at the same time.
    Enable (check mark) put the hard disk to sleep when possible.
    Lock the padlock.
    Optional: Repair permissions &/or restart.

  • External display won't sleep

    I just purchased an NEC PA271 27" LCD display for my Mac Pro. It's beautiful, clear and sharp, but there's one problem: it won't sleep.
    When I put the computer to sleep or shut it down, the monitor doesn't go into sleep mode. The blue LED on the front is supposed to turn amber, indicating sleep, but it doesn't.
    I've tried resetting the SMC and PRAM, as well as repairing permissions, to no avail.
    Any ideas?

    I should also mention that I didn't have any problems with my ACD 23" previously, so it would seem to be an issue with this particular display and how it communicates with my Mac Pro.

    Note that the Thunderbolt Display can only work with Macs with Thunderbolt ports (Early 2011 and newer MacBook Pro). If your Mac is older, it won't connect to this display.
