Display won't go to sleep and freezes

hey guys, my macbook retina wont go to sleep when I leave it idle, I set it to go to sleep after 1 minute in energy saver preferences but nothing happens..the screen stays on , if I try to manually make it sleep, than the computer screen turns black and freezes.. I have to manually restart after that, I'm on mountain lion 10.8.1

I have a few questions if you have a few minutes to answer. Here they are.
1. Exactly what is sleeping if in energy saver you have these settings:
display not sleeping: hard disk unchecked-not sleeping: and computer sleeping?
2. Why do you leave the hard disk unchecked-not sleeping. If it is spinning, isn't it better to have it stop spinning when not in use?
3. Sort of related to question number 2, why do you use the settings that you mentioned: display-sleeping: computer not sleeping; hard disk-not sleeping. In other words why do you only put the display to sleep.
Thanks, Lorin (dont know much about sleep)

  • My display won't go to sleep

I just recently upgraded to the Mountain Lion OS and now my computer won't go into the screen saver (set at 10 minutes) and the display won't go to sleep (after 15 minutes).  It is on all the time.  Any suggestions?

Same issue in ML (sorry for continuing this thread here).
Please let me know if you figure this out. I have tried SMC/PRAM resets, disk permission repairs. Nothing.

  • Help please. Extended display won't work on MBP and AOC 20" 1600 x 900  60HZ monitor. Mirror display does. I've a mini dvd to vga converter cable. Should this work?

Help please. Extended display won't work on MBP and AOC 20" 1600 x 900  60HZ monitor. Mirror display does. I've a mini dvd to vga converter cable. Should this work?

I have the same mini display port adapter and Belkin DVI-HDMI cable (but a Panasonic 42" Plasma HDTV) so just set this up on it to see if I could duplicate your problem, unfortunately for you (but good for me) I can't.
I connected the adapter+HDMI cable before switching the HDTV on and then powered up the MBP. It (the HDTV) came up with my background right away (it's set at Mirror not extended Desktop) and when I run System Preferences/Displays get the following. Sorry but all I can confirm is that adapter+cable combination should work ...
Try doing a Parameter RAM reset - hold down command/option/p/r keys at start up and wait for three chimes before releasing the keys?

  • IMac won't sleep and freezes on shutdown

My iMac has developed an annoying problem. Most nights, when I try to put the computer to sleep, it goes to sleep and the immediately wakes back up. I exit all programs running in the dock and try to sleep it again, but the same thing happens. I will then try to shut it down, but it freezes on the screen that shows the wheel with the lines (sorry for the bad description there). Any ideas?

    Here's more on sleep;
This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is KB article HT1776 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB card.
Also, here is Apple KB article TA2469 about PCI cards and sleep.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
Tristan Currier noticed this; "I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
    Check the printer queue!"
    Good Luck!  DALE

  • Display won't go to sleep (imacg5)

So the screensaver will kick in when there's no activity for XX minutes, but the screen won't sleep after YY minutes like it's set to in "Energy Saver"
I wouldn't mind it so much if I could enable an active screen corner to sleep the display, but I don't have that option in my "Dashboard & Expose" system pref.
One note: there is no mouse/keyboard attached to this iMac, I use "teleport" to share one keyboard/mouse with this iMac G5.

    *A few suggestions:*
Change the energy saving options, to put the display to sleep and the computer to sleep at the same time.
Enable (check mark) put the hard disk to sleep when possible.
    Lock the padlock.
    Optional: Repair permissions &/or restart.

  • Cinema Display won't wake from sleep

After reading lots in the forums I've concluded lots of people have the same problem that we are mistakenly thinking is specific to a particular monitor or Mac or behaviour.
Problem: Display suddenly does not wake from sleep - incidentally after an OS update and Cuda update.
Hypothesis: This definitely seems like a software problem as I've solved it in so many new ways. (Some people are replacing hardware!) Once fixed, the problem recurs the next time the display goes to sleep. However solutions rarely work a second time.
    Solutions:
    1. Zapping PRAM fixes it.
    2. Deleting all displays preferences fixes it.
    3. Safe boot and clear caches may have fixed it.
    4. Pulling the Mini DisplayPort cable and blowing on it has fixed it. (I thought it was dusty since it worked. It may have just been pulling the cable.)
    5. Deleting a power management preference in System/Library/SystemConfiguration/ fixed it.
    6. Moving the power plug from one slot on a power bar to another fixed it. (***!?!)
    7. Creating a new user account fixed it.
    8. Now I'm stuck.
Please can help me think of a new way to fix it? If I can get it going again, I will simply keep the computer and 2nd display awake forever.

    I have a new fix!
    8. Launch Magic Bullet Looks app and fiddle with the display settings!!! Woohoo! I got it back again.
As long as the display never goes to sleep and is never unplugged (tried that) I can keep using the monitor. Sadly this means never lettting the new iMac sleep.

  • MacbookPro won't wake from sleep and reboots

Since installing Yosemite this morning, my MacbookPro won't wake from sleep, it reboots. I have also had one instance of a black screen forcing a hard reset. On rebooting I get a popup about a graphics error, my machine is a 2013 model so I wouldn't have expected any compatibility issues and it was rock solid until I upgraded the OS, any thoughts?

And this is the panic report I get every time:

  • Fan runs on HIGH and won't wake from sleep--it freezes!

I have a G5 (Power PC, g5, Dual 1.8 GHZ with 1.25 GB SDRAM, and Mac OS X 10.4.10-phew!) and I recently: added more USB ports using a PCI card, and purchased a non-Apple 22" widescreen display.
Prior to adding USB ports, I was using a hub that ran off its own power source, and used a Samsung 19" monitor.
My situation now: everything starts up fine, but ultimately the fan will kick in at SUPER HIGH and won't stop. I can put my Mac to sleep--which stops the fan noise--but then it won't wake up.
I have run the Apple Hardware test and everything checks out OK. I've also reset the SMU according to directions from this forum; AND I've vacuumed out all the dust bunnies.
The fan runs so loud and so high it sounds like it's an airplane that's about to take off.
Short of bringing in my Mac to a technician, can you recommend anything? My Mac has been glitch free up until now.

I have a G5 (Dual 1.8/2.5GBSDRAM,10.3.9) that I'm worried about. After stepping away from my machine for an hour, I came back to it and it sounded like the fans were about to blow they were revving so high! My screen was frozen and non-responsive, so I did an immediate shutdown via the power button. I let it sit for an hour or so and it would not reboot (Got the power on chime but nothing...except the three repetitive quick pulses of light from the power button). I knew that it meant it was a RAM issue. Did the old unplug trick and SMU button trick, nothing. Have 2 original 256MB and 2 6mo old 1GB pairs. Pulled the #2 pair then booted (failed), then swapped the #2's and seated in #1's slots...no luck, still get the three flashes on the power button.
All the RAM was seated firmly...so I don't think it's the RAM. Am I looking at a logic board or power supply failure? Is there an alternative I'm missing?

  • G4 won't start after sleep and power disonnect

    Hi,
I recently put my MDD G4 to sleep, then inadvertantly cut the power to the machine. Now it won't start up. I push the start button, it lights up as long as I'm holding it (firmly), but nothing happens. No fan, no screen, nothing. I've tried unplugging. There are no devices connected other than display and keyboard.
    I'd be grateful for suggestions!
    Thanks,
    Larry

You could also have a bad PRAM battery. I would check it. When mine went, I had no response from my Mac at all; just a light on my power button; absolutely no boot at all.
Check out things in Texas Mac Mans tutorial on the subject. His tutorial is a little dated (don't believe it even mentions G5's) but the info in it, except SMU not being included, still applies. The PMU reset is discussed in there too.
    Cheers!

  • G5 WON'T WAKE FROM SLEEP AND RESTARTS WHEN PUT TO SLEEP

My apologies if I'm posting this in the wrong category. I am having some major problems with my iMac G5 running Tiger. The first problem was that when I put the computer to sleep it would not wake up from sleep.
I took it to the Apple store and they found nothing wrong with it. Now when I try to put the computer to sleep it restarts. I thought maybe I had just pressed the restart rather than sleep mode by mistake but when I attempted to put it to sleep a second time it restarted just like before.
It's a bizarre problem I know but I'm wondering if you have any ideas as Apple says if they can't get the computer to recreate the error they won't do anything to fix it

Do you have any USB devices connected (other than keyboard and mouse)? If the display has an USB cable, disconnect that too.

  • Display won't go to sleep

    Hi all,
I have set the display to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity in Energy Saver preferences, but I noticed my Mac Pro is on screen saver mode all the time when not in use.
My screen saver is set to start after 10 minutes of inactivity, and the computer sleep is set to NEVER.
Is there a setting that I missed or takes precedence over that in Energy Saver for the display?
    TIA

In system preferences > Desktop&Screen Saver > Screen Saver- there is a start screen saver time/slider. Your setting here may be affecting the Energy Saver Prefs.

  • Display won't go to sleep / screen saver won't turn on

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard instead of the screen saver activating or the screen going to sleep when inactive, the screen goes dark for about a second and then flashes back on. It's resulted in images being burned into my screen a couple of times now.
If I manually activate the screen saver then the screen saver stays active and after a minute the display goes to sleep. Also, if I'm using Front Row the screen will go to sleep without a problem. I've tried turning off all apps to test it if one of them is preventing it, and and it still happens.
    Anyone else have this happening?

The screensaver preference file is stored in ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.xxxxxxx.plist, where xxxxxxx is a UID for your machine. By moving this file out of the folder, your screensaver settings will be reset to the defaults.
The power settings are stored in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist.
If your new user does not have the problem, then the preference problem may be in your ~/Library/Preferences folder.

  • Sleeping and freezing

my computer freezes when i wake it up from going to sleep. Im forced to turn it off and start over.

My 3 month-old MBP has just developed sleep problems in the last week. It has just today for the first time frozen while idle, but until then it was always on waking from sleep. To start with, it was infrequent and intermittent, but it's increasing in frequency at a disturbing rate.
When waking from sleep the screen restores and mouse pointer functions, but no input is accepted from mouse, trackpad or keyboard -- which, after researching this elsewhere, it seems is a common symptom of the problem.
The night before last it failed to go to sleep at all and I discovered it cooking away under its lid in the morning, quite a bit warmer than its usual operating temperature, with a black screen that wouldn't restore. I had to do a hard shutdown. No idea whether this is in the least bit relevant, but when it restarted, the Bluetooth status icon was missing from the menu bar (though my BT mouse was working fine) and I had to uncheck and recheck the "Show Bluetooth status in the menu bar" option in System Preferences to restore it.
I'm really scratching my head as to why this should have suddenly started happening. Recent software additions/updates mostly don't correlate as suspects because the programs haven't been running consistently when these freeze-ups occur. About the only one that might be possible is Firefox, but others have been experiencing this thing long before the latest Firefox upgrade so it doesn't seem very likely. I haven't introduced any new hardware within the last month either.
I have Onyx installed and ran the complete set of maintenance routines, but it was after this that the machine failed to even go to sleep.
I haven't found any solutions to this problem on any other forum I've looked at. Anyone else got further with this? Or have any ideas about what the culprit might be?

  • 2012 Macbook Pro won't boot from CD and freezes in single user mode

I'm rebuilding a macbook pro. Everyting was fine until I tried to install Snow Leopard from the disk. It goes to the Apple symbol no spinning wheel and you can hear the drive working for a few seconds but then stops. I've also tried booting to sinlge user mode but it just freezes after Loading System\Library\Caches\com.apple.kext.cahces\Startup\Extensions.
I've tried resetting the PRAM as well.

If you have a 2012 MacBook Pro, you can't install Snow Leopard because it's not compatible, so it's normal that you can't start OS X.
Now, you have to install OS X Lion or Mountain Lion again. Hold Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Recovery, and reinstall OS X. After reinstalling OS X, you will be able to use your computer.
You can't run an older OS X version than the one that came with your computer, because of some reasons:
    1. The hardware isn't compatible.
    2. The firmware restricts the installation of older versions on the computer.
    3. It's illegal: Apple doesn't allow you to install an older OS X version than the one that came with your computer, and it doesn't mind the method you use (a "normal" installation or a virtual machine)
