Display won't work on LCD tv

So, I bought the Dvi-Video cable for my 13in White Macbook, and for some reason, it's not working well with my television. I had an old pc with the same res as my Macbook and it worked fine when I connected the s-video cable from my laptop to my tv, but it's not working well with the Macbook. What could I be doing wrong?
I am running 10.6.1 Snow Leopard with the latest update. I just bought the cable today brand new, and was hoping to watch some College football online, but was disappointed.

Is it a 2009 White MacBook? If so, it's no longer compatible with that adapter. Only the older plastic MacBooks work with that adapter.

Help please. Extended display won't work on MBP and AOC 20" 1600 x 900  60HZ monitor. Mirror display does. I've a mini dvd to vga converter cable. Should this work?

I have the same mini display port adapter and Belkin DVI-HDMI cable (but a Panasonic 42" Plasma HDTV) so just set this up on it to see if I could duplicate your problem, unfortunately for you (but good for me) I can't.
I connected the adapter+HDMI cable before switching the HDTV on and then powered up the MBP. It (the HDTV) came up with my background right away (it's set at Mirror not extended Desktop) and when I run System Preferences/Displays get the following. Sorry but all I can confirm is that adapter+cable combination should work ...
Try doing a Parameter RAM reset - hold down command/option/p/r keys at start up and wait for three chimes before releasing the keys?

  • External display won't work on Window

Hi can anyone please help me in this? when I using window XP, my external display won't display out but when I'm using MAC OS X it work well, why? please help... Thanks

I can only help if you are using an NVidia graphics card, as with that you can use the NVidia Control Panel to setup the external display.
    Connect the display
    Start NVidia Control panel
    Select the Display icon
    Then select Change Display Configuration
There you can set the resolution, extend the screen or create a copy et.c.
    Hope that helps...

  • I have 2 macbooks, and my thunderbolt display won't work on one. HELP!

I have to Macbook Pros. The one for my work is connected to my Thunderbolt. When I tried to connect my personal one to watch a movie, it won't connect. I tried "detect displays" and "gather displays" - nothing.
    HELP!!
    Dana

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Note that the Thunderbolt Display can only work with Macs with Thunderbolt ports (Early 2011 and newer MacBook Pro). If your Mac is older, it won't connect to this display.
To check what MacBook Pro you have, see > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4132 If you have a Mid 2010 or older MacBook Pro, you can't use it with your Thunderbolt Display

  • Why Apple Thunderbolt Display won't work on BootCamp Win7 64-bit while being plugged to MBA?

    Hello,
I have MBA (latest) & installed win7 64-bit in BootCamp, I do also have Apple Thunderbolt 27" Display.
When I disconnect the ATD and re-connect it in Mac OS X, it works fine like a charm, but when I disconnect then re-connect in BootCamp, it doesn't work at all whatsoever, in fact, I have to restart my MBA (while thunderbolt is connected) to make it work in BC, this is the only way to make it work.
So, my question is; If I disconnected ATD in BootCamp then re-connected it, why it won't work?
I've googled everywhere about this issue, but no luck.
    Any idea?

to calculate how much video ram is needed one
    take
the vertical number of pixels and * with horisontal number of pixels and * with 32bit colour which is 4 bytes
so if it's the 13" macbook air
    1440 * 900 * 4 = 5.184MB for main display
    +
    2560 *1440 *4 = 14.75MB for second display
sounds like the intel hd 5000 would have that as dedicated memory even if the windows driver did not allow to use shared system mem as extra
could be a problem with the driver for windows
maybe a person who ran a setup like yours would have more to contribute with
my setup is an imac 21" with amd video card and a 24" dvi dell monitor and that works fine in windows so it's a different animal altogether

  • HELP! Macbook Pro Display won't work!

I have a 15-inch Macbook Pro from Late 2007; it worked fine yesterday, but as of this morning the display will not work! It makes the Chime when you power it up, but no screen display; I know it's on because you can adjust the volume buttons and hear the volume beeps. The screen brightener and dimmer does nothing, as well as the keys brightener and dimmer. The apple help text said to first try restarting it, did it no change-> then unplug it and disconnect battery for 1 minute, did it no change-> reset the PRAM which I did no change, and then if that didn't work to reset the SMC which I did and got no change in my problem.
And now the part that boggles my mind is I have the cables to hook up the MBP to my TV so i figured I'd atleast be able see it on the TV if the display has crapped out on the MBP but its doesn't transmit the image to there either. So anyone got any ideas? Is it possible I caught a virus that kills displaying ability? Please help!

    I'm having the same issue
it started with distorted horizontal lines across my screen, then yesterday black just like yours. I reset the pram and the power. not working, doesnt work with external monitor either. that article seems to be the answer from CMCSK's link
i'll let you know soon how it works out for me

  • Powerbook detect displays doesn't work on LCD TV.  Does on other TV.

    Hello,
I recently purchased a telemprompter which uses an LCD TV with a composite input. (From here on out referred to as teleprompter) I set my powerbook up with the S-video to Composite adapter and hooked it up to my Big TV. The screen automatcially detected the external display and changed the settings and diplayed the screen.
When my teleprompter showed up, and was plugged in, nothing happened. I went to the display perferences and clicked detect displays and the image flickered once on the telemprompter. But it didn't show anything else and a second display box did not show up.
Then I plugged my TV in and it didn't auto detect, but when I clicked detect displays it did and all worked again. Then I plugged the telemprompter into the cable and IT WORKED. I could use the LCD TV.
I then clicked "detect displays" and the image disappeared from the teleprompter and the second display box disappeared.
For some reason it is not seeing this particular device. Is there a way to manually force a 2nd display? Everything would work, if I could tell OS X to output a display out the S-video port.
Is this possible? Manually set 2nd display?
I'm using 10.4.4 on a powerbook 1.67ghz. I'm going to try a cheap VGA scan converter in hopes that it will work that way, with a DVI to VGA to scan converter, to composite.

I don't know if my recent experience helps us understand your dilemna, but I just bought one of these NEC 20" all-in-one LCD monitors. It has DVI, VGA, YUV, S-Video, Composite video, and RF input. It's native resolution is 1600 x 1050 and can supposedly scale any input resolution up to 1920 x 1080i. I'm having issues very similar to yours... maybe we can solve them putting our 2 brains together.
I have (2) mini-macs. One of which detected the monitor just fine, and displays the 1600 x 1050 perfectly over DVI. The other seemed to only get a 'partial list' from the monitor when it did it's display detection. It seemed to only get the 'TV' style resolutions, because most of them are interlaced options, and the olny one that doesn't make the monitor twitch like an epoleptic is 1280 x 720p. There is no 1600 x 1050... there isn't even 1024 x 768, 800 x 600, or 640 x 480 listed!!! The funny thing is, if I output to the montior analog VGA (as opposed to DVI) I get the 'full list' of resolutions. This tells me that a 1-time preference/ registry is being made/ created when the detect displays is hit for the first time with a monitor. I can't figure out where the **** this preference information is stored either. It seems if we can find out where on these mini-macs this registry is made, we can solve both are issues... because it certainly is not an issue of the graphics not being able to output the desired resolution. It seems to be some bug in reading the DDC info from the monitor.
If anyone can help.... much appreciation would be had from this frustrated user.

  • T420 display won't work while docked

My laptop is a t420 with a Mini-Dock series 3.  I have one monitor attached to the dock's VGA port.  When I first attempt to use the laptop with the dock, nothing outputs to either the LCD or VGA display.  If I power down by holding the power button and power back up, it works normally.  I have tried changing the boot display in the bios settings from LCD to VGA with no change.  Does anyone know of a fix for this?

    hey en10411,
i would like you to update the bios as well as the firmware of your T420 from this link >>

once done, test your docking station again.

  • Multiple display won't work

I have connected two different monitors to my late 2009 IMAC.  The multiple display works fine but when I shutdown the computer the secondary monitor won't wake up unless I unlug the video cord and plug it in again.  Any solutions?

Hi Michael, thanks for your reply.
Regarding the GPU failure, I had my doubts about this simply because the external display at any resolution and 'screen share' are fine and that would seem to imply the GPU itself is fine.
I don't have an answer and I suspect it's going to require a new logic board, but from what I know that is an expensive fix and that would be unaffordable meaning the MBP will effectively become a MacMini which I'd really like to avoid.
Is there anything else I can try?

  • External Display won't work in clamshell mode

Hi - I can't get my external display to work with the MacBook in clamshell mode - It works fine with the lid open.
I'm using it with the apple bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
I've obviously changed a setting without realising - can anyone help.
    Thank You.
    Ash
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)
    Mac OS X 10.6.8

Sorry - I've now got it to work.
I don't know how - I just went through all the settings one by one, switched them off and back on again and it now works - I have to assume it is 'user error' but I can't work out which bit

  • External display won't work over DVI

I've got an ViewSonic vx2025wm hooked up to my MacBook Pro. It used to work fine over DVI, but some time ago the monitor stopped being able to detect the signal and I had to switch over to VGA (via my Apple DVI-to-VGA adapter). That works fine at the full resolution of the external display, but the image quality leaves something to be desired.
Strangely, the external display works just fine in Windows XP via Boot Camp. Oh, the irony!
Any ideas on how to get this working again? I dread the OS X re-install.

Same problem here. Had a Dell 30" monitor plugged in for a long time. Suddenly stopped working yesterday. The symptoms: the Mac detects the external display and "thinks" it's got it there (I can tell because the active content of the window is gone on the laptop's screen), but the display does not successfully see the output from the Mac (it shines its orange "no signal" light).
Restarting does not seem to help.
I should test it with a new display cable, but am a little reluctant to do this, as the dual link DVI cables required for this monitor are so expensive, and because previous posters on this topic have tried swapping cables with no result.

  • My cinema display won't work over a display port booster and extra long cable.

    Hi,
I have a Mac Pro (mid 2010) and an Apple Cinema Display 27". I also have two other DVI monitors. Recently I got a few extenders, so that I can have the computer in a different room to the monitors. Everything works perfectly except the Cinema Display. My system recognises that the cinema display is connected (as it shows as a display in preferences), but the screen is black.
The series of connections from computer to screen is: mini display port to display port adaptor, short display port cable, gefen display port booster, extra long display port cable, display port (female to female) coupler, display port to mini display port.
Please let me know if you have any ideas what the problem may be.
    Thank you!

Per your advice to taking out the longest cable, I ran a couple of tests at different stages of the connection. Over a short conversion to displayport and back to mini display port, the monitor connected no problem. It was only when I introduced the "Display Port Booster" that I lost signal, over the short connection.
I think the unit might be faulty and this is the problem. I sent it back to the company that sold it to me and they're running tests now. Hopefully they will be able to fix it.

  • Mbp fcp on 23"apple display won't work

    Hi,
I'm using a MacBook Pro 17" (ATI Radeon X1600 graphics card) with a 23" Apple HD Cinema Display hooked up as the main monitor. Trouble is, when I'm in FCP HD and working with HDV HD footage (720 or 1080) I can't play any clips in fullscreen mode on the Cinema Display. It just gives me a still image.
If I play the same clip in QT Player at fullscreen/presentation mode they play fine on the Cinema Display. What gives?
If QT Player can handle the playback of these files in fullscreen on the external display, then why can't Final Cut?
and I tried this Try VIEW>>VIDEO PLAYBACK>>DIGITAL CINEMA DESKTOP PREVIEW (one of those options) and make sure VIEW>>EXTERNAL VIDEO>>ALL FRAMES is on.

The power light is on, on the display and the computer is showing that the monitor is recognized. Attached an old Dell monitor and it works perfectly.
