Displayed icon for audio files changed with snow install - how to I restore

After installing 10.6, the icons displayed on audio files (aiff, mp3, etc.) became a black square with a music symbol in it when it should be the default application icon or quicktime icon. The icon in the upper left corner of the info window is correct, but the hideous square displays. How do I restore to the correct icon?

I have the same problem. I produce a daily podcast ("Mister Ron's Basement") and I have almost 1500 episodes on my hard drives in both the original recordings (aiff files done with Sound Studio) and mp3 versions. They used to have different icons, and even though the aiff files will still open in Sound Studio automatically, they all have the same black square icon. Used to be, at least you'd get an icon that had the word with the file type on it, but no more. I have changed many of the back ones with Candy Bar, after sorting them by file type, but every new file I create, I have to go to get info and change the icon by hand. Not very professional, and a waste of my time. Can I expect sound icon differentiation to be returned to the Macintosh Operating System at some time in the near future?

You can check for issues with the Windows icon cache and try to rebuild the icon cache.
    # Open the Task Manager (Shift+Ctrl+ESC)
    # In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
    # Open the file picker via "File > New Task (Run)" and click the Browse button.
    # Type or Paste %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local (%LocalAppData%) in the File name field (AppData is a hidden folder).
    # Select the IconCache.db file and use "Delete" in the right-click context menu to delete the file.
    # After the IconCache.db file has been deleted, start a new explorer.exe process via "File > New Task" to get the desktop and Taskbar back.
The IconCache.db file is a hidden file, so make sure that you can see hidden files.

  • Icon for audio file

I am playing with creating a multimedia story using Pages and its ability to support audio files. Is it possible to change the icon for the sound file? For example if I want to use a sound clip to offer the opportunity to play a telephone message in the story, could I make the an image of a telephone be the icon clicked to hear the message? If so, how?
    Thanks.

Did you install the latest version of iTunes?
In iTunes, if the sidebar (along left side of window) is not visible, from the iTunes menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
In the sidebar, when you connect the iPod, it should appear under DEVICES.  Does it appear there?

  • Fuzzy icons for office files opened with VM Ware

since upgrading to snow leopard, the finder file icons for the office files (.xls, .ppt, .doc, .xlsx, .pptx, etc.) are all fuzzy. I notice that if i change the file associations for these files to mac office they look right again but as long as they are associated with the version of office on the VM ware virtual machine, they remain fuzzy. This is annoying since it's so fuzzy it's hard to distinguish between ppt and xls without looking at the file extension.

I used Roxio VHS to DVD for Mac (have iMac with Snow Leopard) and the audio does not synch with the video when playing in iMovie.  Any suggestions to fix?

Thanks for the reply.  I tried playing with detaching the audio in iMovie, but with 20+ hours of video to correct, it would take too long.  After 28 hours, Corel/Roxio tech support replied that it is a known bitrate mismatch problem and they have no real fix.  I strongly suggest not to buy this product.

  • Where I can find bitrate info for audio file?

I just upgrade to OS X 10.9.2 and I can't find bitrate informations for audio file in Finder's info window. Is there someone with the same problem?

Here's an Automator Service that wil give you a pop-up:
(Highlight the audio file, right click and select the service name)
    Open Automator, Select Service.
    The Service is:
The Run Shell Script Action is:
    echo $(( $(mdls -raw -name kMDItemTotalBitRate "$1" ) /1000 ))  \(File: "${1##*/}"\)
    The AppleScript is:
    on run {input, parameters}
display dialog "Total bit rate: " & input buttons {"OK"} default button 1
              return input
    end run

My G5 is starting up with an icon of a file folder with a blue smile face. The motor will run loudly for a few minutes and then nothing. I can not get it to run at all.
    Any suggestions?

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
If that doesn't work, Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

  • ITunes doesn't recognise iPod as the default player for audio files.

A few weeks ago my husband completely re-installed our laptop, without properly looking at how to backup my iPod touch. Everything was lost and I have had to start again, however the system still comes up with this message each time I plug the iPod in:
iTunes has detected this is not the default player for audio files. Would you like to go to the Default Program Control Panel to fix this.
I go to the Control Panel, but have no idea what to do.
    Can anyone please help me?
I have not upgraded to version (4.0)
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Geordie81,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Are you sure it wasn't referring to making iTunes the default application for audio files as described in this Apple support document? Worth a shot anyways.

  • "An error occurred while updating the default player for audio file types"

Getting ready for a deployment of version 9.2 of iTunes for 1400+ users.
Getting this error when a 'normal' user goes into Edit/Preferences of iTunes and makes no changes.
"An error occurred while updating the default player for audio file types. you do not have enough access privileges for this operation."
I've elevated privileges of the C:\program files\itunes directory for this user to Full Control however problem remains.
Tried to modify the folder to remove 'read-only', as found this suggestion on here, but read-only keeps applying itself.
User has full rights to the location of the media as specified under Advanced Tab. If I tick 'Set as default media player' and remove tick and then click OK I do not get the error. From what I've read it's affected older versions of iTunes also.
Doe anyone have any other suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

I had a similar issue. Turned out that - somehow - one of the directories or files in my iTunes music folder had gotten set to read only. Fixing it was easy.
    Go to Edit/Preferences.
    Choose the Advanced tab
in the General subtab select the contents of the box labeled "iTunes Music folder location"
    Click Start, choose Run
    Paste the location
Press the button to move up one level
Right-click the music folder, choose Properties
If this is your problem, the read-only box will be a solid color or checked. Set it to empty and choose the default "apply to folder and all subfolders and files." This will set everything in there readable, which after I did so I stopped getting the error.

  • Upgraded to 10.3.1.55, now can't set iT as default player,"An error occurred when updating the default player for audio files types.  You do not have enough access privileges for this operation." How to fix?

After I upgraded iTunes, iTunes doesn't recognize CD in the drive, apparently isn't the default player.  It won't let me set iTunes as the default player, I get the error message "An error occurred when updating the default player for audio files types."  I tried Whitesides' remedy (changing Read Only status in folder in Windows) but it didn't solve the problem.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Oddly enough. I think I just solved it. It looks like, for some reason, my computer has about 8 different "iTunes music" folders, and I've been saving my music to the wrong one. Neat. Music now imports and plays as it should. Copying things over is going to be so fun tonight!

  • Remove the unique icon for movie files

In Finder, I get a custom icon for each movie file that is the first frame of the movie. That doesn't help me, so I want to change it to only show the QuickTime image as a custom icon. This is the behavior of Tiger and it was useful to me. I don't get any benefit out of seeing the first frame. I get a benefit out of instantly knowing it is a movie file. Please reply if you know how to revert Leopard to using the application icon rather than the first frame image as the document icon.

Progress? I think not. Anyone know a hack to make the Finder show app icon for all files at once?
Open a Finder window, go to Macintosh HD (or whatever the boot volume is called in your system), click the little gear icon/button, and select "Show View Options", then un-tick "Show icon preview", and click on the "Use as Defaults" button (if this button is not active, select a different option from the Arrange drop-down menu, and it will activate).

I can not open gmail attachments  on my iPad, the icon for the file is a down arrow....  that only happend on Gmail account

It could be just an issue with the gmail server. I don't know what settings can be made for attatchments there. I generally leave those messages with large attatchments alone and view them on the computer. I was finding that certain large files like .wmv would sometimes take 5 to 10 minutes to open on the iPad.
Yes it's aggrivating, but I don't have that answer either.
