Displayed name in Messages

I have my wife in my contacts list under two different names, her actual name and "ICE". When I receive messages from here, the name displayed is "ICE". I assume this is because Apple decided that in such situations, the name displayed would be the first match that comes up in an alphabetical ordering. Is it possible to make it so her actual name is displayed instead of "ICE"?
I have tried linking the contacts, but that destroys the ability for someone to look through my contacts and easily find "ICE", so that would not be a desirable solution.

Hi,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
It is not not obvious from the info that Apple Does put out about these Support Communities but generally if a thread has a green tick it is Solved.
That is not always the case as the Helpful and Correct button (that only the Original Posters sees) tend to make new posters use them just because someone replied.
Also it pays to join a Thread only if you have the exact same problem, but again that can be very hard to judge.
IN the Contacts app > Preferences > Account check that the Mac is syncing with the other device.
This can also be set up in System Preferences > Internet Accounts with most people using the iCloud option but it can also be done with Google, Yahoo and others. (although there can be issues doing it with several at once)

• Can't change Google Talk name in Messages

I'm having trouble changing my displayed name in Messages in Google Chat. In "Internet Accounts", I only have my iCloud account and my Google account, both of which say my name. Additionally, in Messages, all of my accounts say my name. However, my buddy list window for my Google Talk/Jabber account says a different name (its the primary account name used by my family for App Store/iTunes).
What steps can I take to fix this?

Hi Katie,
If you are using a Microsoft Exchange account, you cannot change the display name. Only your Exchange administrator can make this change. For more information, you can click
here.
Therefore, if you want to change your display name, please contact your Exchange administrator for more help. For your reference, here is a blog about changing Alias and Display Name in Exchange server(For Exchange 2013, change it in EAC):

• How to change 'captured' display name?

How can I view, and more importantly edit, a 'captured' display name?
I can view and change the display name I made for the contact entry in the address book, but cannot view, much less edit, the 'captured' display name (I looked at the address book using 'Notepad' and can see the entry of the 'captured' display name).
This causes problems when I start entering the person's name since the 'captured name' often shows up.
Scenario:
(1) Person's name = John Doe; Original email address = [email protected]; First message received from original email address had a 'captured'/'sent' display name of 'John Doe'; I created and edited the contact entry / address card and explicitly entered 'John Doe';
(2) Person now has a new primary email address = [email protected], but wants to keep original email address; With the new, primary email address, I edited the original contact entry / address card and change the display name to 'John Doexx' (keeping the original email address); I created a new contact entry / address card with a display name of 'John Doe' and entered the new primary email address.
(SITUATION) When I create an email message and start to enter the name 'John Doe', several names are listed. In sequence, the consists of the first (i.e. 'original') address card up with the display name of 'John Doe', then the second ('new') address card with the display name of 'John Doe', and then the 'original' address card (again) with the display name of 'John Doexx'.
Bottom line, I need to change the 'captured' display name for the first address card so it matches the display name I entered. Alternatively, TBird should ignore 'captured' display names if a display name is explicitly entered.
P.S. This questions/issue does not involve a concern about the name actually displayed in the message, although that too should be addressed.

In the '''address book''' click on the '''contat''' then right click choose '''properties''' that page where you in put the mane of the contact and email address there is a check box which when checked '''Always prefer display name over message header''' Try this and let me know if it works

• How can I customise Thunderbird message columns to show sender raw address (not display name) and the "Received for" email address that was used to reach me?

I find it increasingly important to be able to see a sender's actual email address rather than just display name, as they usually don't show a company name - which a domain always would. Is there a way to customise settings/write a script/tweak files to add raw email & domain name columns? When dealing with a number of people at the same company it is hard to order or glance through a list of emails to find them. I also know 2 people with the same name at different companies and it is impossible to distinguish!
Secondly, as a related column addition, since a number of email aliases reach me it would be useful to have a column to show the "Received..for" part of the message source which reveals the actual email used in the To/CC/BCC which led to me. Again can this be tweaked or scripted?
I have programming experience but have not made add-ons and would be open to a suggestion which involves creating a custom add-on if adding columns with custom values is possible that way.
Best Regards,
Drew

Extended message headers can be searched from Edit/Find/Search Messages, or the folder context menu, by adding custom headers to the search criteria. So, you might be able to create a search on specific properties of a message.
The method of adding custom headers to searches is the same as the one described here for filters:

• Setting the display name in a message

Hello for the following code:
String from = "[email protected]";
Message msg = new MimeMessage(session);
msg.setFrom(new InternetAddress(from));
I'd like to set the display name, i.e.
"A Message From Foo"
However I did not see a msg.setDisplayName() method... is there any way to do this?
As a working example, amazon sends an email with a return address of [email protected], but the display name is 'Amazon Payments' which looks a lot nicer for the customer. I'd like to do the same.
Thanks

Solution is:
new InternetAddress(email_address, display_name);

• Tomcat web.xml "display-name" using flex.messaging.MessageBrokerServlet

Hello,
When my web application starts with the BlazeDS servlet flex.messaging.MessageBrokerServlet defined in the web.xml we have an error because in the display-name defined at top level in web.xml we have some text containing character ':'. The error is traced to inside the function
flex.management.BaseControl.getObjectName()
Which gets the object name, and this function calls
BaseControl.getApplicationId()
which finally calls
ServletConfig.getServletContext().getServletContextName()
This will return or display-name from the web.xml with all it's text. This text contains among other characters the character ':'. We use this tag for the display in the Tomcat Manager to see version number and other of deployed project.
After retrieving this name it is appended in the getObjectName() function to a buffer, this StringBuffer that already contains flex.runtime. and now this name is appended (still with all that we are using for Tomcat Manager with ':' character and other). After the name, other things are appended. Our problem is that, after constructing this StringBuffer an instance of javax.management.ObjectName is created. In it's constructor it takes a String name as input. This String is parsed in base of characters ':', '*', '?', '\n' and so on, and since we have some of these characters in our display-name it all goes wrong.
My question is, if this is a bug, a limitation or if it is documented that using flex.messaging.MessageBrokerServlet we can not use certain characters in the display-name of the web.xml?

• Why does the display name in older messages change if I update my address book for that E-mail address?

I have recently installed Thunderbird 24.5.0 after upgrading a WinXP machine to Win7. I have discovered a strange problem with older mail that was imported from Outlook Express 6.
The pastor of my church uses a generic E-mail address <[email protected]>. This address belongs to the position, not to an individual. We recently had a new pastor come to the church, and I updated my entry for this E-mail address to reflect the new person's name. This is fine for new mail sent since the new person arrived, but Thunderbird has also applied the new name to older mail from the previous pastor. This is very confusing, since the current pastor could not have sent mail from that address prior to her start date.
How can I get Thunderbird to stop changing the Display Name in archival messages that were sent by the previous pastor prior to September 01, 2013? I have not encountered this situation before using Netscape 4.x Mail, Outlook Express 6, and Windows Mail (Vista version).

Of course it does. It looks for a match between the sender's email address and a Contact in your address book. You've edited the Display Name for this account so it gets applied to any message with that email address if that's how your Address Book is configured.
In the Contact card for this address, you can tell it whether or not to use the "real" email address within the message, or the Display Name from your Address Book. Telling it to use the name found in the message ''might'' resolve this, but it depends on how the sender has formatted it. If he includes his name then Thunderbird should be able to resolve it, and you just add both configurations to your Address Book as two separate Contacts, rather than modifying the existing entry.
However, in this situation you're using the same email address for two distinct people, so Thunderbird may not be able to know who sent the old messages. If both have sent using "rector@stpeterscobourg.org" without any personalization then Thunderbird won't be able to differentiate between them.
I have to say that I haven't recently tried using different display names with the same email address, so I don't know for sure if TB can use the display name constructively. If there's nothing in the old messages to tell you which sender wrote them, then TB can't do anything about it.

• BlackBerry 8700g - Disable displaying (work) next to nunmber for calls or next to Name for messages

Whenever 8700g displays an incoming call from a person from the address book, it adds (Work) next to it. Is there any way to make it not display the group name like that? It displays name then adds (Work) next to text messages senders also. Any way to disable that?
Unrelated question: do Blackberries have the option to answer using any key?

I suggest that you contact your wireless provider, and inform them of the issues you are experiencing. They should be able to assist you with resolving this issue.

• Messages Beta will not let me change my display name.

Messages Beta only shows my yahoo email address and my actual name. I want to change it to something I want.

Hi,
Edit the info in the Address Book for your My Card.
Not that this will make a jot of difference as to what your Buddies see.
iChat and Messages beta can chose to display the screen name (Handle) or the Name (From the Address Book) at the top of the Buddy list.
It make no difference what you display to yourself as the Buddy can see only your Screen Name ( and whatever they call you in their Address Book)
With AIM accounts (and some accounts that can Log in to AIM) you can set up a Display name.
I am not sure if Yahoo also do Display names (I don't use my Yahoo name that much)
Anyway as the Address Card for yourself can be anything you can change what it reads so that iChat displays to you what you want.

If your end goal is showing a pretty error message instead of the message that the tables unique constraint raises try the following. This logic will show a nice message and not try to insert non-unique data.
(1) Create a validation of type "Function Returning Error Text".
(2) Place similar code like the following in your validation. Notice that if the unique name does not exist the no_data_found returns null allowing the validation to pass.
DECLARE
v_error varchar2(100);
BEGIN
SELECT 'A person by this name already exists.'
INTO v_error
FROM your_table
WHERE your_name = :P1_YOUR_NAME;
RETURN v_error;
EXCEPTION
WHEN no_data_found THEN
RETURN NULL;
END;

• How to display an error message in maintenace view

Hi,
I have following requirement.
I have a table. In the table, there is a field named REPORT which keeps an executable report name. When adding an entry i need to fill the field with an report name, which should exist in the system. The report name should not be include objects.
Then I use search help HELP_TRDIR with import parameter SUBC = 1. I also create a maintenance view for the table.
Then my question is how to display a warning message if the report I input in REPORT field doesn't exist in the system. If I need to modify the generated objects of the maintenance view, how to do it.
The reason i don't use foreign key is that it seems filter functionality is not availabe in the case with import parameter SUBC = 1.
Thanks in advance,
Best Regards, Johnney.

Hi,
You need to add your validation in the table maintenance events:
Use the event : 01 - Before saving data to the databse table... for this purpose
1) Go to Menu-> Utilities->Table mainatenace generator
2) On the table maintenance screen->Menu->Enviroement-> Modifications->Events
3) select an event 01 and give some subroutine/form name.
4) Add your validation in the form(Note this form should be in the Func Group of the table maintanance genetaor)

• How can I get Sender Display Name using Get-MessageTrackingLog?

Hi, could you please help me. We have got a monitoring system at work which monitors some devices, so if something wrong happening with these devices email is sent from MASTER email (Customer Name <[email protected]>) to us. I'm trying to get a list
of all emails of that monitoring mailbox using PoweShell command
Get-MessageTrackingLog and export them to CSV file. In the end of the day I need CSV file with 3 columns: TimeStamp, MessageSubject and SenderDisplayName! Yes, I need Sender Display Name cause all emails are sent from one MASTER email
(Customer Name <[email protected]>) and only difference between them is sender Display Name which is cexactly what I need.
This is the code I'm using:
Get-MessageTrackingLog -EventId Receive | Select Timestamp, MessageSubject, Sender | Export-CSV C:\NagiosAlerts.csv
–NoTypeInformation
So how can I get sender Display Name(Customer Name) using Get-MessageTrackingLog insted of Sender email (<[email protected]>)?

The DisplayName is not recorded in the Logs only the EmailAddresses are so there Is nothing you can do with Message Tracking to get this the way you want. You need to look at another property may soureIP or include something in the Subject
of the Email (eg a customerId in the Subject is a much better option) to give you some differentiation. Otherwise you need to access the Email directly from the Mailbox it was sent to and then extract the DisplayName from the message (or use a journaling
on those emails etc)

• How to change display name in iMessage?

My son has an iPod that's using iMessage to text. When he text to my phone, it has my name as the display name and not his. How can I change this so it can display his name instead of mine?
I am using my iCloud account on this iPod, not sure if it has anything to do with it.

Very easy
Do you mean you want their name to display when you ipad imessages your iphone?
2 ways to do it
You can either add another contact and call it iPad Message for instance and just add your iMessage email in there.
Or
If its another persons phone they simply need to add the same email address into your contact on their phone.
I dont think its possible to not display your email address mind you if you are not already added at all in their contacts, i.e if you're imessaging an aquantaince and not a close friend via iMessage.
iMessage i designed for more personal use between friends and family unless you dont mind sharing your email address.
Why not just add another email address in iMessage to use if you're worried?
