Displaying Chinese on JSP. Very strange
My environment is English OS win2k and IE5.5. This is my source code
<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="zh-cn">
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=big5">
</head>
<body>
JO
</body>
</html>
If I saved it as a JSP file, and then I run my Tomcat 4.1. When I open this file, I will not be able to see the chinese characters. I have to manually right-click and select "Big5" from the pop-menu.
However, if I saved it as a HTML, then I will see the chinese characters straight away without any setting.
How to make it when I save it as Jsp file, I can see the Chinese characters without user to select the encoding type?
Please help me.
Thank you
I do not know if this will help, but try adding
<%@ page contentType=text/html pageEncoding=big5 %>
at the top of your JSP file.

Display Chinese Character jsp page by using UTF-8
hi all,
I have one jsp page have Chinese character, need to allow user input Chinese character into db, right now my situation is if I set <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"> , the Chinese character in my jsp page I can't display correcly, but the inser is okI have to set encoding to big5, then I can't insert chinese character into my db correctly.
can I use UTF-8 to display my jsp page, which have Chinese Character in there?Thank you!Hi Niklas
thank you for the suggestion. somebody told me UTF-8 suppose work, only if you typing your Chiness character in UTF-8 formate, i don't know that is true or not, but that realy a challenge for me, I using jdbc , some time ago, and then stop, and on that period,if I got free time, I did try to learn some tutorials on struct, hibernate, like http://javaboutique.internet.com/tutorials/Struts/; http://courses.coreservlets.com/Course-Materials/struts.html
recently I need to deal with some online form , first I want to use struct, but I keep got forwad problem, I forget the detail error message, and found not place to ask questions, so , I pick jdbc again, so ,if you have some useful link in struct or a nice community for people to learn struct, I am look forward to
know that,
by the way I set *<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=big5" /> in my jsp*
String dbURL="jdbc:mysql://localhost/survey?useBig5=true&characterEncoding=Big5"; in jdbc
keep UTF-8 setting in mysql, it looks solute the problem that I had, hope that can enhabce our knowledge in that
thank you for the help and wish good luck for future. -
Displaying chinese charachters in JSP
i need chinese charachtes get displayed in my JSP.actuallly a messege string is coming from the servlet.
How can i send that message using unicodes to dispay it in chinese.Since i'm new to this scenario please give me some step by step guidence to get this job done .if some one out there has done this kind of a job it'll be greatfull if u can help me in any way...
thanks in advance
dilanIn a Servlet you can say before obtaining the
HttpServletResponse.setContentType(type)setContentType
Sets the content type of the response being sent to the client.
The content type may include the type of character encoding used, for example, text/html; charset=ISO-8859-4.
If obtaining a PrintWriter, this method should be called first. -
Very strange crash when displaying pdf tumbnails in iBooks 1.5
Hi,
Recently, I have experienced a very strange behavior in iBooks. The app opened normally and then, some seconds later, dispaly getts blak and the app closes abruptly.
I have traced back this behavior: It occurs just when the cover tumbnail of some pdf books is displayed in any iBooks' library view (both in bookshelf view and in Title view)
I removed the troubesome pdf, but found that some others ( wich worked fine fron a lot of time ago) produce just the same behavior.
When (using the painfully method of trial, and l, and trial again! And again,... ) i finally deleted all the crash - related pdf's, iBooks worked fine again.
The most intriging features related this behavior are: 1- It is related only with tumbnails. All the pdf are normally vieved using some other ipad psdf viever (such as Kdan Pdf Reader or Adobe Reader for ipad) 2- If yoy remove the cover as pdf first page ( even if you move such cover and put it as the second page, using software like pdf sam) the pdf works fine in iBooks.
I suppose this is a (annoying) bug, but,is there any suggestion? Is there any way to disable The tumbnail feature in iBooks?
Best regardsSomehow this bug came up on my radar yesterday later in the day: the first two comments indicate different plugins, and the third refers to the Acrobat plugin:
<blockquote>This seems to happen if Adobe Reader is used for displaying PDF documents (pdfjs.disabled set to true and Preferences > Applications > PDF to "Adobe Reader (in Firefox)").<br><br>Opening two tabs displaying PDFs and closing one crashes the other one.<br><br>Was able to reproduce with Firefox 36.0.1 and Adobe Reader plugin "Adobe Acrobat 11.0.10.32". When I tried to reproduce it later again in the same profile (or on Nightly and Beta), the tab didn't crash.</blockquote>
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1113190
Sounds like your issue, but it's puzzling that they got a tab to crash and in your case only plugin-container.exe crashed. -
JSP to display Chinese From Oracle Unicode?
My Oracle 9iR2 Database use Unicode as default character set.
However, I can not see Chinese from JSP and use <%@ page contentType = "text/html;charset=UTF-8" %>.
What is the solution to i18n?Hi,
Why can't you use a Java Bean which takes the data from the database. Then call this bean from the JSP page using <jsp:useBean> tag.
Ok,if you dont want a Java Bean and if you want to use an applet in a JSP file, you will have to use <jsp:plugin>tag. Here is an example
<html><head><title> Demo Applet</title></head>
<body bgcolor="rd">
<% if (request.getParameter("SUBMIT") != null) {%>
<jsp:plugin type="applet" code="DemoApplet.java" codebase="." name="Demo" height="400 with="300>
<jsp:fallback> Plug in not supported by your browser</jsp:fallback>
</jsp:plugin>
</body></html>
Hope this will help you.

VERY strange lag on a Dell Optiplex 760
I thought it would be a good idea to keep a 16GB flash drive on my keychain that booted Arch so I could work on HW for college in a consistent OS! Everything is working great so far, but I ran into a very strange problem with a Dell Optiplex 760. During the normal Arch init process, everything loads great, except for when it gets to the udev stage where everything hangs. But here's the strange part of this scenario: the problems go away when I start typing random keys or move the mouse! If I don't do this, the system hangs completely from what I can tell. This happens at the console and with X.
The service tag for this machine is FDCQQJ1, and the dell.com driver area brings up this list of hardware and (windows) drivers for it.
Here's the #lspci -vv of the system:

Very Strange Internet Problems
I own a MacBook Pro 15.4 Inch that I purchased about a year and a half ago. I recently upgraded to Leopard and have all the latest updates. I am from the US, and when I am home my internet works fine. However, I am on travel to Seoul, South Korea right now and am having a very strange internet problem.
As far as I can tell, the URLs that I type in to my browser are, sparodially, not translated correctly into the webpages that they are supposed to represent. This problem is probably effective 75% of the time, and the rest of the time my internet works roughly correctly. For instance, when I enter http://www.google.com, instead of being taken to the Google homepage, I am taking to the homepage of Jammin Beats DJ Service, an obscure website about a company in northern Pennsylvania. The actual URL of this website is http://www.jamminbeats.com, but when my internet is malfunctioning, 'jamminbeats' is for all intensive purposes replaced by 'google' (that is, it applies not only to the main page, but to sub pages, so "http://www.google.com/weddings" takes you to "http://www.jamminbeats.com/weddings" and etc). For most other webpages, one of two things happens. Either I am taken to the correct page but it is displayed without any images or frames (just the html text and links), or I am taken to a blank page with the header "Under Construction", which I assume is the default for a page that doesn't exist. This is why it seems as though the URLs are simply being interpretted erroneously.
This problem occurs when connecting both to the wireless and the wired internet at my hotel, and it occurs on both Safari and Firefox, so it is not a connection-specific or browser-specific problem. It may be a problem with the hotel's internet, and as of yet I have not had a chance to test the computer at another location. However, a colleague using an IBM computer has had no problems, and I am currently on a Samsung machine in the business center of the hotel and it is working correctly as well. I have searched extensively online for a similar problem but have come up empty handed, and more than anything, I am confused about what might be causing this problem. The strangest thing is that a fraction of the time, the internet functions normally, but it is usually roughly 15 minutes out of every hour, and eventually I am inevitably taken back to Jammin Beats.
I am a computer science graduate but I still have no idea what would cause this problem. At first I thought it might be a hacker, but if it is, he or she has been at it consistently for 3 days now, and only seems to be targeting my computer. Any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated, as I have been forced to resort to the hotel's business center for checking email, doing work, etc. Thanks in advance.I did consider that, as I was in Beijing last week and there are a number of censored sites. However, in Korea I have had problems with very basic sites like facebook, wall street journal, google, yahoo, Korean google, my hotel's webpage, etc. Further, I have successfully gotten all of these sites to load seemingly at random, and can access them without problems on other computers. The only disconnect seems to be between my MBP and the internet, not between Korean internet and the web. I have toyed around with the network settings, and although sometimes after switching from "Automatic" to a fixed connection I get some sites to work, it usually only lasts a short time and eventually the same sites stop working. I reset my cache regularly to make sure I'm not getting sent to cached sites, but this also doesn't help. Further, my Apple Mail, Skype and AIM accounts jump between being connected and disconnected randomly as well. Again, this is isolated to my own computer, which is why I'm so confused.

Netbeans Issue: Servlet do not display Chinese UTF-8 properly
Netbeans Issue: Servlet do not display Chinese UTF-8 properly
Java Version: JDK1.5.0_01, JRE1.5.0_01 (International version)
Netbeans Version: Netbeans IDE 4.0
OS: Windows XP Personal Edition
Dear Sirs,
First at all thanks for reading this post. I am having the following issue. I am creating an application using html pages and servlets. I am using Chinese and English languages on them (html encoding UTF-8).
I created a project in Netbeans and added an idex.html screen reporting to a servlet. Both index.html and in the servlet generated html page contains the line:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">
Additional, I setup the character code settings in Netbeans:
(tools-options-Java sources-Expert-default encoding=UTF-8
When I run the project, index.html displays itself perfectly, with the Chinese characters displayed properly. The problem comes when the html created servlet is displayed, which instead of the Chinese characters some strange characters are displayed ( instead of Chinese).
I have tried different encodings from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/guide/intl/encoding.doc.html without any luck. I also setup the encoding of the file itself (using right click-properties in the project menu of Netbeans).
Also, when I am editing the servlet, the characters are displayed properly. I type them directly without any issue, but then the display is wrong at runtime.
Also, just in case this have something to do with the problem, my PC was bought in US, therefore the default character set is not Chinese. I had to install the Chinese typing stuff later on. But like I said earlier, the html page is displayed properly, so I really think is some problem with Netbeans.
After a week trying to find a solution, I decided to post it here in the hopes that someone will show me the way of the light.
Thanks in advance for any ideas or help provided
Aral.Hi, thanks for your help. However I think the problem his more complex than it seems. Here is my doPost method (the important parts anyway):
response.setCharacterEncoding("UTF-8"); //Not necessary because the next line should take care of it, but anyways...
response.setContentType("text/html; charset=UTF-8; pageEncoding=UTF-8");
PrintWriter out = response.getWriter();
out.println("<html>");
out.println("<head>");
out.println("<meta http-equiv='Content-Language' content='en-us'>");
out.println("<meta http-equiv='Content-Type' content='text/html; charset=utf-8; pageEncoding=utf-8'>"); //Again not necessary line, but anyways
out.println("<title>Servlet</title>");
out.println("</head>");
out.println("<body>");
out.println("this is a test 你好 this is a test");
out.println("</body>");
out.println("</html>");
out.close();
This servlet is called from a html file. Also, when I load this in the browser, I right click on the screen and I can see that UTF-8 is setup allright. Doing some detective job I found that:
- If the editor displays the characters perfectly and...
- Other html pages (no servlets) in the same application can display chinese characters well and...
- I have configured the encoding as UTF-8 in the servlet properties and in general properties and...
- The file "web.xml" contains the encoding UTF-8 in its first line then...
...my only guess is that something goes wrong during the building of the project itself (ant?). Unfortunately I have no idea about configuring ant to that level, but I began to think that the problem may be there, during the compilation...
Any ideas?
Once more, thanks for any help or advice provided.

Very strange problem. Missing characters in QT applications
Hello all.
I'm trying to deal with a very strange issue since some time, that is driving me crazy, because I have no clue where the problem may lay:
In my Archlinux system, some, and only some QT applications (for example Skype, or Qtconfig) don't display properly certain characters in the unicode set (for example "ń" or "ł") when I use certain fonts (for example Terminus, Clean or Verdana), and those applications substitute those characters with the corresponding ones from the Bitstream Vera Sans font type.
So, when I write, say, the Polish word "Toruń", the four first letters (T, o, r and u) are rendereed in the desired font type (let's say Terminus). However, the last letter (ń) is rendered in Bitstream Vera Sans, thus making the writing appear really ugly and uneven.
However, this doesn't happen in Opera (the browser), which is a QT application, but where I get the whole unicode character set displayed properly in the desired font type (Terminus in this example).
Also, this doesn't happen in the rest of non-QT applications I have in my system: all of them render perfectly the whole unicode set of characters in the desired font type, no matter which.
But! it's not a problem of those QT applications, because I have another partition with Ubuntu installed, and when I boot that partition I don't have this problem: all applications, including Skype and Qtconfig, display correctly all characters in the whole unicode set, no matter which font type I'm using.
This is totally bewildering me.
Any clue?
Thank you.The problem is not only in qt applications. I run openbox and this is the output I get when using the command-line script pdfmerge to merge pdf files:
GPL Ghostscript 8.71: Missing glyph CID=48, glyph=0030 in the font VerdanaBold . The output PDF may fail with some viewers.

GPL Ghostscript 8.71: Missing glyph CID=34, glyph=0022 in the font VerdanaItalic . The output PDF may fail with some viewers.

GPL Ghostscript 8.71: Missing glyph CID=77, glyph=004d in the font Verdana . The output PDF may fail with some viewers.
There are visible errors in the pdf output. For example, bold "C" is replaced by a square box, bold "b" is replaced by a space.
It looks like there's bug in the Verdana font or perhaps in Ghostscript 8.71 -
Display chinese character HTML in iPS3sp3
Hi there,
I am using iPS3sp3 and I modified it so that JSP can display chinese character correctly. But somehow I still can not display the chinese character in normal HTML.For instance, I put chinese character in Ldap.properties file but when user go to the Ldap login screen, the chinese can not be displayed correctly. The following is the modification I have done and can anybody please give me some help?
adding zh_TW in iwtPlatform-availableLocales
adding zh_TW in iwtPlatform-locale
adding BIG5 in iwtPlatform-HTMLcharset
adding ips.locale=en_US,zh_TW,zh_TW.BIG5 in platform.conf file
Setting, User's Default Locale: zh_TW
Setting, User's Default HTML charset: BIG5Finally, I made it work. The solution is pretty straight forward. All I need to do is to convert these kind of html file to utf8 encoded files and then, it works perfectly. Hope this might be useful for some people.

JEditorPane -- displaying chinese characters in browser
Is it possible to display chinese characters in an applet in a browser, I have read Jaric S.'s article on it.. but it is a little confusing.. however without doing any of that coding I have chinese showing up on one machine in IE, but not on any other machines with IE. Any thoughts anyone?
Is it possible to display chinese characters in an
applet in a browser, I have read Jaric S.'s article on
it.. but it is a little confusing.. however without
doing any of that coding I have chinese showing up on
one machine in IE, but not on any other machines with
IE. Any thoughts anyone?Browser Java is particularly sensitive to the version of Java the browser supports. Some browser companies, notably Microsoft, haven't updated their Java implementation in 4 years. Likewise users who are using old versions of other browsers probably have old versions of Java. This makes it very hard to predict how anything will work when it depends on a browser's VM.
There are two ways to combat this. First you can use Sun's Java Plugin to replace the VM used by your browser with a modern one that supports your applet. Second, you can use Java WebStart which allows programs to be launched from a browser but run in an independant VM. These two things might help you get consistent results for your applets.
Hope this helps,
Brian. -

Very strange EL evaluation problem
Hi,
I have a very strange problem atm.
I'm trying the JNDI Resources example on tomcat.
My test.jsp page looks like this:
<%@ page contentType="text/html;charset=UTF-8" language="java" %>
<%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" prefix="c" %>
<%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/sql" prefix="sql" %>
<html>
<head>
<title>DB Test</title>
</head>
<body>
<h2>Results</h2>
<c:out value="${1+2+3}"/>
<sql:query var="rs" dataSource="jdbc/JavaTest">
select id, foo, bar from testdata
</sql:query>
<c:out value="${rs.rowCount}"/>
<c:forEach var="row" items="${rs.rows}">
Foo ${row.foo}
Bar ${row.bar}
</c:forEach>
<br>
</body>
</html>
The output of this page is this:
Results
${1+2+3} ${rs.rowCount} Foo ${row.foo}
Bar ${row.bar}
As you can see these expressions are just written out to the browser and they are not being evaluated.
The problem is not with tomcat itself because other jsp's without database access work perfectly.
My web.xml file looks as follows:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE web-app
PUBLIC "-//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD Web Application 2.3//EN"
"http://java.sun.com/dtd/web-app_2_3.dtd">

<res-ref-name>jdbc/JavaTest</res-ref-name>
<res-type>javax.sql.DataSource</res-type>
<res-auth>Container</res-auth>
</resource-ref>
</web-app>
my context.xml file looks as follows:
<Context path="/DBTest" docbase="DBTest.war" debug="5" reloadable="true" crossContext="true" useNaming="true">
<Logger className="org.apache.catalina.logger.FileLogger"
prefix="localhost_DBTest_log." suffix=".txt" timestamp="true"/>
<Resource name="jdbc/JavaTest"
auth="Container"
type="javax.sql.DataSource"/>
<ResourceParams name="jdbc/JavaTest">

<value>true</value>
</parameter>

</ResourceParams>
</Context>
I've included the jstl.jar and standard.jar from the jstl package in the WEB-INF/lib directory, also the mysql-connector-java.jar (JDBCDriver) is included in the web-inf/lib directory.
Here is the logfile, which might contain the answer to my problem: (I removed the ResourceRef specification because it's exactly the same as in the context.xml file)

Can somebody help me with this. I've been looking for a sollution for hours.
I've been having problems setting up the jdbc-driver also, but I think this is solved now with these deployment descriptors. I don't have a single clue what is going on right now.
${} expression are simple NOT being evaluated.
I don't think it's a database problem because I can see the user connections in the mysql monitor.
Any ideas? All help is welcome and very much appreciated. :-)
THANKS !!!
PS: sorry for the extreme long post, I wanted to post all relevant information to track this strange behaviour down.Seems to be a problem with your web.xml not pointing to version 2.4.
Just check this link too:

I have a problem on displaying Chinese Lyrics on my iPOD Nano. All chinese turns into strange character.
The lyrics can be displayed in iTunes6.0 properly on both windows (xp) and mac mini. I have try convert the mp3 tag to v2.4, but it didn't help.
Any help is appreciated.Before uploading to Nano, I have the fear of wrong display of Chinese characters. But to my surprise, all Chinese characters can display properly and even Traditional (Big5) Chinese characters and GB Simplified Chinese characters mixed on the same screen appear properly on the Lyrics window of my Nano.
It's fantastic even WinXP machines require proper settings to display different Chinese characters sets properly. I just choose "Chinese" on the Nano's language setting and it turns out OK. But it takes more steps for me to get the Chinese characters display correctly in iTunes5 on my WinXP.
