Displaying East Asian Characters in Safari?

Hello, I am learning Japanese and Korean. I have apps for the iPhone that display Hangul (Korean), and Hiragana/Katakana/Kanji(Japanese). When I am texting, I can view and input characters in Korean and Japanese. When I am in Safari, I am unable to view characters that are in these East Asian Languages on certain pages. google.co.jp works, but babelfish does not. There are other websites, but these were the two that I was using as a test. In babelfish, the translation box just comes up empty. Any ideas? Do I just need to use another translation site?
Thanks in advance!

Do I just need to use another translation site?
Perhaps. The best is certainly

  • How can I display East Asian characters in MediaSour

I am using Windows XP SP2 Chinese Traditional (Taiwan) edition, although I li've in the US.
My system setting is by default Chinese Traditional, and I have enabled East Asian language support for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
However, Creai've MediaSource has trouble displaying such East Asian characters, most of them look like random code.
At the same time Windows Media Player can display all the music info just fine.
I have a very large collection of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean music, so this function is very important to me.
    Please help if possible.
I've read some previous posts about such issues, but most of them seem to involve the English version of Windows which is not in my case.
    Thanks in advance.

I don't know why, but whatever I do, I can't seem to get the East Asian characters to work at all. I tried the control panels stuff, but when I use the "Get Info" thing before ripping a CD in MediaSource, I still get random characters.
Go to MediaSource's Tools->Settings->Audio CD/Rip setting page. In there, you can then set a language to be used for CDDB info. Just try and error with the different language settings (use CDDB, use OS, or use a specifc language) and one of them will be the correct one. You may need to set a different language setting for different CDs.

  • Displaying Big 5 characters on Safari

I have difficulty in reading some Japanese website as the characters are apparently neither in UTF-8 nor Big 5 HKSCS, this annoys me a lot and I really wish to deal with it, does anyone have any ideas?

The encoding of that site is Japanese Shift JIS.  It seems to have been created by people who are ignorant of the proper way to write web site code, so that users have to manually reset their default browser encoding.  This isn't possible in iOS Safari, but perhaps in some other browser it is.  You could also try setting your iOS interface language to Japanese to see if that makes a difference.

  • What typfaces are there that I can use varied weights for East Asian Characters?

I am at a dead end trying to find a typeface which is not a script, which offers me more than one stroke weight for Traditional Chinese and South Korean characters. I need a typeface which will compliment Helvetica.
    Please help!
    Thank you

I can't help you with Korean.  As for Chinese, the system fonts for Windows and the Chinese fonts bundled with some Adobe products come in a single weight, as you already know.  However, some of the Japanese fonts bundled with InDesign come in multiple weights: various weights of Kozuka Pro _might_ work for traditional Chinese, though some forms occur only in Japanese.
Character set is a big deal, and Chinese fonts vary significantly in the number of characters they contain.  Typically, you get more characters in standard weights (i.e.,  "regular" or "light").  Note, too, that authors frequently use Windows system fonts for Chinese (MingLiU or PMingLiU). These happen to have very large character sets, meaning they contain many variant forms that are not available in most fonts; inevitably, authors use some of these variants and they show up missing in the weight you need.
Dynafont and Arphic packages are pretty well regarded, and included a variety of weights in some styles -- but watch out for character-set issues.  I can't recommend a source since the one I used disappeared.
    Good luck!

  • East Asian Charact

Hello, I've searched on how to properly display east asian characters, but i can't seem to find answers.
i rip jpop CDs using grace note database with media source player, but whenever i import track and artist names, it displays garbage characters. i tried switching to japanese region mode in xp, and it works and displays fine when i rip the music into mp3s.
but the problem is that i need to play these in the korean region mode in xp. when i switch to korean region, it displays the files in garbage characters again, and i can't even play them in media source.
can anyone help me? or direct me to a link with answers?

I Can't access that site to see what happens as you need to authenticate.
Can you attach a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screenshot screenshot]?
    The screenshot didn't attach.
Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed the maximum file size (200 KB) and do not click Preview after you have attached the image.
Did you try other encodings via View > Character Encoding ?

  • New iTunes update (10.6) not displaying asian characters correctly.

Just updated my iTunes to 10.6 and the new version is not displaying the asian characters in the artist or song titles. They are appearing in the album. Have restarted my computer multiple times.

Same issue going on for me. Like daskaea said, it doesn't show up in the album grid, but shows up fine everywhere else. I personally am encountering this issue for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean scripts.
Attempts to clear the name and re-enter it manually also do not work.
    Anyone have any ideas?

  • Enabling East Asian/Non-latin alphabet support?

Hi guys. Very new here, this will be my first post
Been using Arch for a few days now and this only just occurred to me.
How exactly do I go about installing East Asian language support on my system? I'm assuming it's a really simple install from a repository via pacman, but I googled, looked on the wiki and did a few forum searches and couldn't find the answer.
Also, I don't want to be able to type in East Asian characters, as I very rarely type in anything other than English. I just want to be able to see and read them in my browser or applications as many of my friends on facebook or the pages I visit use these characters (as opposed to just seeing those nice rectangles).
Anyway, I'm sure this is a really simple problem to solve, I just hope it helps a fellow newbie out in the future
Thanks for your time and help.
Btw, I'm absolutely loving Arch. By far my favourite distro I've used yet It's great fun as well!

Ah, okay cool. I knew it would be easy
Although, I just tried it out and Kanji, Hanzi, Hiragana and Katakana seem to be showing up all fine, but Hangul (Korean characters) don't seem to be included and I'm still getting those nice rectangles instead. Do you know the font pack for Hangul?

  • Itunes 10: East Asian languages displayed as boxes in certain areas

I just got a new computer, and moved all my music to my new computer, and installed Itunes 10. But for some reason, if I try to edit my song's info (Right click on song, 'Get Info') the titles and everything that's in another language displays as boxes. The song title itself when in Itunes displays properly, but only in the 'Get Info' box does all my Chinese, Japanese, and Korean song information turn into little boxes. It's not my computer's problem, as it displays all these languages properly. The problem lies with Itunes, but none of the help topics really do anything. Can anyone help me out please?
If you didn't really understand my explanation, here are some pictures:
    [IMG]http://i53.tinypic.com/35n0i02.jpg[/IMG]
    [IMG]http://i55.tinypic.com/ojo1i0.jpg[/IMG]
As you can see, boxes in the info editing areas, but everywhere else, it displays properly.
    Thank you for your help!

In case anyone else comes across this problem -
It turns out that the fontconfig.properties approach is a bit of a red herring (at least in this example).
I've resolved the issue by adding a method to my bean to specify a different font for english and chinese language users. For chinese language users I specify Font = "Simsun-18030" and for each AWT component explicitly setFont( new Font( "Simsun-18030", Font.PLAIN, 14 ) ) Now AWT components displaying chinese characters are rendered correctly with no need to modify any config files on the client PC.
    - NB font appears smaller for pointsize than english fonts.
    - Using "SimSun" as the font also works but text in english is not displayed very clearly
    - On windows you must install east asian language support for this to work (Start -Run - intl.cpl - languages tab)

  • Displaying Asian characters on Solaris platform?

I have a java application that can display Chinese, Japanese, Korean & Taiwanese (CJKT) on a Windows platform. It is able to display these characters on Windows because i have installed the CJKT locales and have modified the font.properties file to provide the necessary font mappings for the CJKT charsets. But, when i do the same modifications in Solaris (i.e. install the locales & modify the font.properties to provide mappings to various fonts that support the CJKT charsets) and run the application, i am not able to see the CJKT characters. The CJKT characters are displayed as boxes when the application is run in the en_US.ISO8859-1 locale.
Could someone please suggest what can be done to enable the display of CJKT characters on an ISO8859-1 locale?
It seems Solaris has locale-specific font installation. Is there any way a font from one loacale (say japanese) can be used in the other i.e. system locale (say korean) to display characters of the first locale (japanese)?

Thanks, but it does not answer the question.
I already have the required locales installed. It is just that i'm not able to display Asian characters on an English locale. I am using the Java logical font (serif), and the font.properties does map it to the various fonts that support the CJKT (Chinese, Japanese, Korean & Taiwanese) charsets, but still the application is unable to display the CJKT characters. It seems that java makes use of the X11 fonts and they happen to be installed in separate directories, one for each locale. This could be the reason why the other fonts are not available in the ISO8859-1 locale.
Is there any way we can map use the fonts of other locales by making use of the java logical font?

in windows machine this is not a problem.

  • Asian characters displaying in my english language PDF.

This morning I opened a PDF and got a message that I needed to install a language pack.  I installed the asian language pack as requested and when I opened my PDF there were asian characters displaying in my english language PDF.  How do I fix this issue?

  • Displaying Asian Characters/Other Fonts

I'm having trouble trying to display other fonts/asian fonts in my SWING application. I know this has probably be asked to death, but here's my scenario.
I don't want to modify the font.properties file if possible because this is a SWING applet. I'm trying to use the "Arial Unicode MS" font from Windows to display some unicode characters, but all I get is the dreaded square boxes.
I've tried to access the GraphicsEnvironment.GetLocal.... but I get a security error for a missing class (I'm using JRE1.3 on Windows2k).
Here's a snippet of my code:
    UIManager.put("Label.font", new Font("Arial Unicode MS", Font.PLAIN, 40));
    JFrame frame = new JFrame("Test Window");
    final JLabel label = new JLabel("\u88B9 alcsnjdfd \uBA85\uC554\uBE44");
    frame.getContentPane().add(label);
    What am I doing wrong?

  • ITunes 10.1.6.7 update has broken my foreign font display - Asian characters are now squares. How do I fix this?

The iTunes 10.1.6.7 update has broken my foreign font display - Asian characters are now squares.
They are fine on my iPhone, copying to other documents & through the Last FM scrobbler, yet iTunes shows songs incorrectly. I've fiddled with the ID3/Unicode settings - nothing changes.
For example: iTunes shows a bunch of squares, yet when I copy and paste them here it becomes ~  일렉트로보이즈
This was not a problem earlier - everything was fine in the four years or so I've used iTunes until, I believe, this update. If it was not the update, I'm not sure what else it could be?
Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thank you!

Thank you so much! I vigorously searched around these parts and the general internet before posting and found nothing - it's so simple, too
Hahaha, turns out it was Windows, not iTunes, that broke my font

  • TextInput control misbehaves when using the East-Asian fonts

I am a little curious about this issue and I would like to get some help from our community. The issue is about fonts when using East Asian languages.I have all East-Asian language installed on my computer (WIN SERV 2003)and I let my flex application to use the local system font(font is not embedded) to get the Japanese character. When I start typing the characters into the Flex textinput control everything works properly as expected until I reach the boundary of the textinput control, the characters gets displayed outside the textinput and I would need to press the enter key to get the fonts inside the textinput . Have anyone experienced such problems when using fonts for Japanese, Chinese etc? Refer the image for more clarity. Please help

This is the expected behavior for Japanese in my experience. The reason, I think, is that for Japanese characters the text input process has two steps. First the basic phonetic characters are entered and then these are selectively changed into kanji characters which can shorten the final input text. So it makes sense to calculate the textbox height after the text has been finally input, not while it is still being input. The enter key is the event that signals the text should be submitted. I don't know about Chinese, but for Japanese, this is the standard way of handling text input in my experience.
